The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of infrared tympanic temperature (IR T(ty)) as a thermal index to evaluate the heat strain of workers in hot environments, in comparison with rectal temperatures at various depths (T(re-4, -8, and -16) for 4, 8 and 16 cm from the anal sphincter). Eight males underwent twelve experimental conditions: two activities (rest and exercise) × three clothing levels [Control, HDPE (high-density polyethylene coverall) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride coverall) condition] × two air temperatures (25 and 32℃ with 50%RH). The results showed that 1) in the conditions with most heat strain (HDPE or PVC condition at 32℃), IR T(ty) was equal to or even higher than T(re); 2) during exercise, physiological strain index (PSI) using IR T(ty) did not underestimate PSI-values using T(re-16), and overestimated those PSI-values from T(re-16) in HDPE and PVC conditions at 32℃; 3) during exercise, the relationships between IR T(ty) and heart and total sweat rate were stronger than those between T(re-16) and heart and total sweat rate. These results indicated that IR T(ty) is valid as a thermal index to evaluate the heat strain of workers wearing impermeable protective coveralls in hot environments. However, the application of IR T(ty) is limited only for strenuous works wearing encapsulated personal protective clothing with a hood in heat. 相似文献

Active versus passive cooling during work in warm environments while wearing firefighting protective clothing 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study examined whether active or passive cooling during intermittent work reduced the heat strain associated with wearing firefighting protective clothing (FPC) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) in the heat (35 degrees Celsius, 50% relative humidity). Fifteen male Toronto firefighters participated in the heat-stress trials. Subjects walked at 4.5 km.h(-1) with 0% elevation on an intermittent work (50 min) and rest (30 min) schedule. Work continued until rectal temperature (T(re)) reached 39.5 degrees Celsius, or heart rate (HR) reached 95% of maximum or exhaustion. One of three cooling strategies, forearm submersion (FS), mister (M), and passive cooling (PC) were employed during the rest phases. Tolerance time (TT) and total work time (WT) (min) were significantly increased during FS (178.7 +/- 13.0 and 124.7 +/- 7.94, respectively) and M (139.1 +/- 8.28 and 95.1 +/- 4.96, respectively), compared with PC (108.0 +/- 3.59 and 78.0 +/- 3.59). Furthermore, TT and WT were significantly greater in FS compared with M. Rates of T(re) increase, HR and T-(sk) were significantly lower during active compared with passive cooling. In addition, HR and T(re) values in FS were significantly lower compared with M after the first rest phase. During the first rest phase, T(re) dropped significantly during FS (approximately 0.4 degree Celsius) compared with M (approximately 0.08 degree Celsius) while PC increased (approximately 0.2 degree Celsius). By the end of the second rest period T(re) was 0.9 degree Celsius lower in FS compared with M. The current findings suggest that there is a definite advantage when utilizing forearm submersion compared with other methods of active or passive cooling while wearing FPC and SCBA in the heat. 相似文献

This study compared physiological responses and total work tolerance time following forearm submersion (FS) or leg submersion (LS) in cool water, after performing work in a hot environment while wearing fire fighting protective clothing (FPC). Participants walked at 3.5 mph on a treadmill in a hot environment (WBGT 32.8 ± 0.9°C) until a rectal temperature (T(rec)) of 38.5°C was reached. Participants were then subjected to one of two peripheral cooling interventions, in a counterbalanced order. Forearms or lower legs were submerged in water (16.9 ± 0.8°C) for a total of 20 min, followed by a work tolerance trial. Results indicated no significant difference (p = 0.052) between work tolerance time (LS = 21.36 ± 5.35 min vs. FS = 16.27 ± 5.56 min). Similarly, there was no significant difference for T(rec) (p = 0.65), heart rate (HR) (p = 0.79), mean skin temperature (T(sk)) (p = 0.68), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) (p = 0.54). However, LS ratings of thermal comfort (RTC) at Minute 14 (p = 0.03) were significantly lower for LS (10 ± 1) vs. FS (12 ± 1). Results indicate little difference between FS and LS for physiological measures. Despite a lack of statistical significance a 5-min (24%) increase was found during the work tolerance time following LS. 相似文献

Physiological reactions of men using microclimate cooling in hot humid environments. This paper describes the laboratory testing of a water-cooled vest and of a pre-frozen jacket on men working in hot humid environments. The work rate used in the tests was comparable with that of moderately hard industrial work. Three measures of strain were used, namely, rectal temperature, heart rate, and sweat rate. The tests showed that the water-cooled vest provided protection physiologically equivalent to removing the entire environmental heat stress, even at wet bulb temperatures of 33·9°C. The pre-frozen jackets provided better protection at 32·2°C wet bulb than at 33·9°C wet bulb. The garments have the potential to restore the loss in productivity caused by heat stress. 相似文献

This study examined the influences of aluminized (Type A) and non-aluminized firefighters' protective clothing (Type B, C, D and CON) on physiological and subjective responses in radiant heat. Total clothing weight was 6.24, 6.38, 6.06, 5.76 and 3.82 kg for Type A, B, C, D and CON, respectively. Eight firefighters performed exercise at an air temperature of 30°C with 50%RH. Three bouts of 10 min-bicycle exercise in radiant heat (a globe temperature of 70°C) was spaced by a 10 min rest with no radiant heat. Results showed that rectal temperature, mean skin temperature, heart rate, and body weight loss were significantly greater in Type A than in other types (p<0.05). For Type A, thermal gradient of the body reached 0.0 ± 0.7°C, heart rate showed a maximum level of 183 ± 11 bpm and 1.9% of body weight was lost due to sweat secretion. Firefighters felt the hottest and most discomfort in Type A. It appeared that firefighters' thermoregulatory mechanism was severely challenged by wearing aluminized protective clothing during exercise in strong radiant heat. Therefore, it is suggested that the safe upper limits while wearing aluminized firefighters' clothing should be distinguished from those for typical firefighters' protective clothing. 相似文献

As the percentage of shifts in hot working conditions in German Coal mines had increased to more than 50% during the last decade, a study was carried out to record the physiological strain of miners. Thirty-eight miners participated during 125 shifts. Heart rate and rectal temperature were measured continuously. Sweat losses as well as food and fluid uptake were estimated from measurements before and after shifts. During all shifts mean heart rates resulted in 102.8 min(-1), mean rectal temperature was 37.7 degrees C. Mean sweat loss per shift was 3,436 g; mean sweat rates resulted in 494 g/h. Rehydration during the shift at high climatic stress decreased to about 60% of sweat losses. In order to state the organizational frame of work at hot working places in German coal mines, the main features of regulations of work at hot working places are presented. 相似文献

The physiological and subjective effects of working with different respirators while wearing lightweight disposable (Tyvek 1412 polyolefin) coveralls commonly used by the asbestos abatement industry were studied. Nine healthy men (mean age = 27.3 yr, weight = 76.9 kg) each performed a series of four exercise tests with four different respirator ensembles in counterbalanced order. Treadmill work was performed at a set walking speed of 4 kph (2.5 mph), 0 percent elevation (220 kcal/hr), a controlled environmental temperature of 33.9 degrees C, and 50% relative humidity. Each test continued up to 120 min, with repeated work/rest intervals of 26 min of work and 4 min of rest. Tyvek disposable coveralls and hoods were worn with each of these four different respirator ensembles: (1) control--a lightweight, low resistance mask; (2) HEPA--an air purifying, full facepiece respirator with dual high efficiency filters; (3) SAR--a supplied-air, pressure-demand respirator with escape filter; (4) SCBA--an open circuit, pressure-demand, self-contained breathing apparatus. Physiological measurements obtained every minute during each test included heart rate and skin and rectal temperatures. Subjective evaluations of clothing, respirator, and facepiece comfort, ease of breathing, temperature and perspiration in the mask and clothing, and respirator load also were measured at the end of the test. Data were analyzed using an analysis of variance. Results indicated that heart rate at the end of the test differed by less than 8 BPM between the control condition and the SCBA (heaviest) condition.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

Hardly any practical approaches have been made on prediction of appearance of heat-stress hazard, although basic studies have extensively been made, including various heat-stress indices. Hence, in the present paper, an applicational prediction equation is presented with regard to the permissible working time without heat-stress hazard on the basis of experimental results. The purpose of this experiment was to examine the significant correlations between elevated rectal temperature, working conditions such as wearing suits, work load, and environmental temperature. The results obtained can be summarized as follows. (1) A critical level of environmental temperature exists. When this level is exceeded, physiological indices such as rectal temperature rapidly increased. According to experimental results, the critical level was about 30 degrees C and the heavier the work load, the lower was the critical level. (2) Moreover, the heavier the wearing suit, the lower became the temperature level. This finding indicated that it was important to choose a suitable apparel under a hot environment in order to keep the workers safe from heat-stress hazard. (3) A general prediction equation of raising the level of rectal temperature compared with that of initial condition was proposed by analysing each experimental condition (suit, work load, and environmental temperature) by use of second order multiple regression method. This equation showed that elevation of rectal temperature was assumed to be proportional to the logarithm of the working periods. (4) The predicted values by this equation corresponded with the experimental values within +/- 0.2-0.3 degrees C, and the correlation coefficient was 0.96. This equation suggests that heavier suits elevated the rectal temperature about 2-3 degrees C when the work load and environmental temperature were moderate. (5) It is possible to predict the permissible working period by this equation. This may be applied to the working plan effectively. Appropriate working conditions can be chosen with regard to apparel, environmental temperature, and work load. 相似文献

The readings of the natural wet-bulb (tnwb) and globe thermometer for computing Twbg index (indoors) were taken between 08.00 to 17.00 h at two-hour intervals in different work locations in the glass bangle and brassware industries. For assessing the physiological reliability of the Twbg index for heat stress, the radial pulse rate was monitored at two-hour intervals in 60 brassware workers and 77 glass bangle workers (mean ages: 25.3 +/- 8.8 and 28.1 +/- 5.7 years) belonging to various occupations exposed to thermal radiation for 9.3 +/- 8.5 and 11.2 +/- 4.8 years respectively. The mean values of Twbg index observed in the brassware and glass bangle industries were found to be almost of the same order (34.4 +/- 3.0 degrees C and 35.2 +/- 1.1 degrees C). The radiant heat seemed to make the most significant contribution to the environmental heat stress in these industries. The globe temperature near the main melting furnace was as high as 53.8 +/- 3.0 degrees C and 59.2 +/- 4.02 0C in the glass bangle and brassware industries respectively. It was, therefore, expected that the exposed workers would show pronounced physiological strain. Surprisingly the pulse rates of these workers did not indicate any significant physiological strain since the maximal pulse rates recorded did not exceed the safe limits of circulatory strain recommended by the WHO.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS) 相似文献

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) is the largest fire department in the United States, with over 11,000 firefighters. In 1994, FDNY changed to a modern firefighting protective uniform. The major difference between traditional and modern uniforms is that modern uniforms include both protective over-coat and over-pant, whereas traditional uniforms include only the over-coat. Furthermore, modern uniforms are manufactured using improved thermal protective textiles that meet or exceed current National Fire Protection Association standards for structural firefighting. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the modern uniform on the incidence and severity of FDNY burn injuries. We also evaluated the incidence and severity of other non-burn injuries to determine whether there was serious adverse impact. The number of lower-extremity burns decreased by 85% when 2 years' experience while wearing the modern uniform was compared with 2 years while wearing the traditional uniform. Upper-extremity burns and head burns decreased by 65% and 40%, respectively. Severity indicators (days lost to medical leave, hospital admissions, and skin grafts) for lower- and upper-extremity burn injuries were all substantially reduced. This occurred without significant change in the incidence or severity of trunk burns, heat exhaustion, inhalation injuries (actually decreased), or cardiac events. The reduction in the incidence and severity of burn injuries, the major occupational injury affecting this workforce, has been so dramatic and without untoward effects that the introduction of the modern uniform must be characterized as a sentinel event in the history of firefighter health and safety. 相似文献

A Brucella conjugate vaccine was synthesized by covalently coupling the O-polysaccharide (PS) obtained from Brucella melitensis 16M, to bovine serum albumin (BSA). The conjugate (PS-BSA) was non-toxic for mice. When injected at two doses (10 or 1 μg) in mice, it induced the production of antibodies and the boost was shown to be efficient if administered after 10 weeks. Immunization of mice with 10 μg of conjugate conferred significant protection against virulent challenge with B. melitensis H38, similar to that obtained with the reference vaccine H38. 相似文献

After responding to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), HIV-infected children had a good response to hepatitis B immunization. However, there are limited data on the durability of antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) in these children. The primary objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of protective anti-HBs level 3 years after a 3-dose HBV revaccination among HIV-infected children with immune recovery (CD4 cell ≥15%) while on HAART. The secondary objective is to assess immunologic memory among children who had waning of anti-HBs. An anti-HBs level of ≥10 mIU/mL was defined as a protective antibody level. Sixty-nine HIV-infected children who had history of a 3-dose HBV revaccination while receiving HAART were enrolled. The mean (SD) of CD4 cell and duration of HAART at time of revaccination was 27.2% (6.7) and 5.9 years (0.4), respectively. The proportion of children with protective anti-HBs level 3 years after the revaccination was 71.0% [95% CI, 58.8-81.3]. The geometric mean titer was 114(SD 5) IU/mL. By multivariate logistic analysis, the predictors for protective anti-HBs level 3 years after revaccination were CD4 cell count ≥500 cells/mm3 at the time of vaccination (p = 0.04) and anti-HBs level ≥ 100 IU/mL at 1 month after completion of the 3-dose vaccination (p < 0.001). Anamnestic response after one booster dose was demonstrated among 14 of 17 children who had waning protective anti-HBs level (82.4% [95% CI, 62.2-102.6]). Our findings support the recommendation of giving a 3-dose HBV vaccination to HIV-infected children with immune recovery while receiving HAART. 相似文献

Acute sensory responses of nonsmokers at very low environmental tobacco smoke concentrations in controlled laboratory settings. 下载免费PDF全文
The objective of this study was to provide a basis for effectively protecting nonsmokers from acute sensory impacts and for preventing deterioration of indoor air quality caused by environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) emissions. With an olfactory experiment we determined odor detection thresholds (OT) of sidestream ETS (sETS), and with a full-body exposure experiment we investigated sensory symptoms at very low sETS exposure concentrations. OT concentrations for sETS are three and more orders of magnitude lower than ETS concentrations measured in field settings and correspond to a fresh air dilution volume of > 19,000 m(3) per cigarette, over 100 times more than had previously been suggested for acceptable indoor air conditions. Eye and nasal irritations were observed at one order of magnitude lower sETS concentrations than previously reported, corresponding to a fresh air dilution volume of > 3,000 m(3) per cigarette. These findings have great practical implications for defining indoor air quality standards in indoor compartments where ETS emissions occur. Our study strongly supports the implementation and control of smoking policies such as segregating smoking areas from areas where smoking is not permitted or instituting smoking bans in public buildings. 相似文献

A dengue virus vaccine candidate, rDEN4Delta30, has been previously reported to be safe and immunogenic in humans, but a subset of vaccinees developed asymptomatic rash, elevation of liver enzymes and/or mild neutropenia. In the current study, mutations that had previously been shown to reduce replication of DEN4 virus in suckling mice and/or in SCID mice engrafted with human liver cells (SCID-HuH-7 mice) were introduced into rDEN4Delta30 in an attempt to further attenuate this virus. Three of the five resulting modified rDEN4Delta30 viruses showed decreased replication in SCID-HuH-7 mice relative to rDEN4Delta30. Moreover, in rhesus monkeys, two of the modified rDEN4Delta30 viruses showed a decrease in replication relative to rDEN4Delta30 while generating levels of neutralizing antibody similar to rDEN4Delta30 virus. All of the modified rDEN4Delta30 viruses completely protected immunized rhesus monkeys from challenge with wild-type DEN4 virus. Based on their attenuation for both human liver cells and rhesus monkeys, two of the modified rDEN4Delta30 vaccine candidates are currently being prepared for use in clinical trials. The application of these attenuating mutations to flavivirus vaccine development is discussed. 相似文献

Epitope LKVIRK on 47 kDa of heat shock protein (Hsp) 90 of Candida albicans, corresponding to residues 386-391 of the Hsp90, is recognized by patients recovering from invasive candidiasis. The efficacy of hybrid phage displaying epitope LKVIRK in the N-terminal region of the major coat protein (pVIII) in inducing anti-invasive candidiasis immune response was studied in C57BL/6 mice. Indirect phage-ELISA results demonstrated that the mice immunized with hybrid phage had significantly higher titers of epitope LKVIRK-specific serum IgG as compared to those immunized with heat-killed C. albicans (HK-CA). C57BL/6 mice immunized either with hybrid phage or with wild-type phage also developed significant levels of delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response and splenocyte proliferation, as well as with HK-CA. In addition, high levels of IFN-gamma in the CD4(+) splenocytes from phage-immunized mice were detected as well during 1 week post-inoculation. Furthermore, mice immunized with hybrid phage acquired a resistance to systemic C. albicans infection as confirmed by fewer C. albicans cells in the kidneys, and had a longer lifespan compared to control groups following intravenous challenge with C. albicans. These results indicate that hybrid phage displaying epitope LKVIRK may serve as a potential vaccine conferring a resistance to systemic candidiasis. 相似文献

A parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV3) subunit vaccine consisting of detergent-solubilized, affinity-purified haemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) and fusion (F) surface glycoproteins was tested in cotton rats for immunogenicity, short-term effects on virus-induced immunopathology and protective efficacy. Groups of animals were immunized twice, 4 weeks apart, with graded doses of vaccine administered either alone or with aluminium phosphate (AlPO4). The minimum immunogenic dose of vaccine was 0.1 microgram HN and F when the vaccine was given alone and 0.01 microgram when the vaccine was administered with AlPO4 adjuvant. Antibody responses in animals immunized with 1 microgram HN and F mixed with adjuvant were similar to those in control animals infected with live PIV3 intranasally. Pulmonary and nasal wash PIV3 titres generally were inversely correlated with serum antibody levels. Virus titres were significantly reduced in all groups of animals immunized with greater than or equal to 0.1 microgram HN and F compared with control animals immunized with vehicle only. Four days after virus challenge, there was no evidence of enhanced histopathology in lung sections from animals immunized with the candidate vaccine. 相似文献
