The decades surrounding the turn of the millennium will be remembered as a time of extraordinary opportunity in cancer communication. In 1990, the number of age-adjusted deaths due to cancer in the U.S. population began a slow steady decline after a century of disparaging increase. Reasons for this decline have been attributed to long-awaited successes in primary prevention, especially related to tobacco, and early detection for cervical, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers, as well as advances in treatment. This was also a time of unparalleled change in the cancer communication environment. Scientific health discoveries escalated with the completion of the Human Genome project in 2003, and penetration of the Internet made health information available directly to consumers. To seize the opportunity afforded by these changes, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) launched the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). Fielded for the first time in 2003, the HINTS is a nationally representative, general population survey of noninstitutionalized adults in the United States 18 years and older. This supplement contains a compilation of original research conducted using the data generated by the first administration of the HINTS telephone interviews. Covering topics in cancer knowledge, cancer cognition, risk perception, and information seeking, the articles represent an interdisciplinary view of cancer communication at the turn of the millennium and offer insight into the road ahead.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a national survey of the involvement of health systems agencies (HSAs) in health promotion. Responses were received from 72% of the 203 agencies surveyed, representing all DHEW regions. Survey data include information on resource allocations within the agencies for staff activities related to remedial health care services and facilities, prevention, and health promotion. More than 90% of the responding agencies reported planning activities for health promotion, and more than one-half of these agencies were actively working to develop health promotion programs in their areas. An index of involvement of health promotion was used in this assessment. The results reveal substantial involvement in health promotion on the part of HSAs. It is suggested that HSAs may be attempting to address at the local level a major deficiency in our health care system which has not received adequate attention, namely the provision of services and programs to enhance health.  相似文献

This article addresses the critical issue of measuring impact of a distance education Master of Public Health degree program on public health practitioners. It is based on an online survey of the 49 graduates of the Public Health Leadership Program at the School of Public Health of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The survey was carried out 1-year postgraduation and had a 73% response rate. Results indicated that graduates continued to have a high level of satisfaction with the program; 97% of respondents indicated they would recommend the program to others, and 75% said that their overall opinion about the program had increased since graduation. On a scale of 1 to 10, 79% of respondents rated the program with a score of 8 or higher in terms of the impact of the program on their ability to do their current job. Regarding new opportunities, 75% of respondents reported that they had new professional affiliations or service commitments, and 31% had job promotions since graduating. The methodology and results reported here may be a model for assessing the impact of a distance learning degree program for mid-career professionals. These results support the viability of a distance-education format for providing necessary training at the master's level for the public health workforce.  相似文献

[目的 ] 评价社区慢性病自我管理健康教育项目对改变患者自我效能的效果。  [方法 ] 按照社区随机对照试验研究设计 ,将 2 97名患有高血压病、心脏病、关节炎、中风、哮喘、糖尿病、慢性阻塞性肺病 (COPD )等疾病并自愿参加该项目的慢性病人 ,随机分为干预组和对照组。采用协方差的秩检验 ,比较有基线和 6个月后两次问卷调查数据的 12 8名干预组病人和 12 7名对照组病人于项目实施 6个月之后在自我效能方面的变化。  [结果 ] 干预组病人的症状管理自我效能和疾病共性管理自我效能评分 6个月的增加值 ,分别比对照组高出 1.0 8分和 1.0 7分 (P值均 <0 .0 1)。  [结论 ] 慢性病自我管理项目实施 6个月后改善了参加者对疾病管理的自我效能  相似文献

Results of a survey of 90 medical schools in 44 states indicate that only 11 had specific hypertension sections, and that after completion of four years of medical school, students had received only 18 hours of instruction in the management of hypertension. Undergraduate students spent only an average of 1.5 weeks in clinics specifically designated for the treatment of hypertension, and small numbers of students were involved in each school at any one time. Specific instruction during residency training was also minimal. Even when ward round and general medical clinic teaching hours are included, instruction in the management of hypertension is limited for a disease that is the most common chronic illness in the United States and accounts for over 5 percent of all physician visits by adults. An increased emphasis should be placed on training for the management of hypertension within the undergraduate curriculum and within the existing general medical and hypertension clinics.  相似文献

The past few decades have witnessed a dramatic increase in consumers seeking health information online. However, the quality of such information remains questionable, and the trustworthiness of online health information has become a hot topic, whereas little attention has been paid to how consumers evaluate online health information credibility. This study builds on theoretical perspectives of trust such as personal-capital-based, social-capital-based, and transfer-based, and it examines various correlates of consumer trust in online health information. The author analyzed the 2007 Health Information National Trends Survey data (N?=?7,674). Results showed that consumer trust in online health information did not correlate with personal capital such as income, education, and health status. Social capital indicated by visiting social networking Web sites was not associated with trust in online health information either. Nevertheless, trust in online health information transferred from traditional mass media and government health agencies to the Internet, and it varied by such information features as easiness to locate and to understand. Age appeared to be a key factor in understanding the correlates of trust in online health information. Theoretical and empirical implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献
