Often discussions about collaborative research, and collaboration generally, begin at the point of how to collaborate, who to collaborate with, and what to collaborate about. Rarely do they include equally important questions of why we are having discussions about collaboration, where such an impetus and emphasis is coming from, and how it connects to the contemporary political research context. In a recent editorial in Qualitative Health Research, Janice Morse highlighted the need for reflection about collaboration. This article responds to that call, providing reflections on collaboration, the imperative to collaborate, and what this all might mean for both qualitative research and qualitative researchers. I hope to stimulate new points of departure for thinking and action shaping collaborative research endeavors without-and just as crucially, within-qualitative research.  相似文献

Researchers and their community partners have been challenged by funders and political entities to translate what is learned in research into practice. Such translation is more challenging than it appears, and it is important to systematically make use of opportunities available to learn about facilitators and barriers to the implementation of effectiveness research in real-world settings. This article presents a case study of the process evaluation undertaken as part of Quit Together, a randomized trial of the effectiveness of an intervention to improve smoking cessation and relapse prevention among low-income pregnant and postpartum women who receive care at community health centers (CHCs). The analysis considers areas of program implementation failure that may need critical rethinking. The article demonstrates the importance of process-monitoring methods to examine context factors of collaborative research, outlines lessons learned and the challenges of research carried out in CHCs, and summarizes implications for researchers and for practitioners.  相似文献

The value of collaborative international research in addressing global public health challenges is increasingly recognized. However, little has been written about lessons learned regarding fieldwork to help guide future collaborative efforts. Through a research partnership between two Northern universities, one Southern university, and a Southern faith-based organization, we evaluated a school-based HIV prevention intervention with South African adolescents. In this article, we highlight the seven key fieldwork-related challenges experienced and identify the lessons learned. The underlying theme is that of reconciling a structured and reasoned "desk" planning process with the more fluid and unpredictable reality of conducting fieldwork. This concern is particularly significant in resource-deprived environments and/or contexts that are less familiar to Northern partners. Fieldwork is unpredictable, but obstacles can be minimized through meaningful participation in both planning and field research. Sharing practical lessons from the field can prove a useful resource for both researchers and practitioners.  相似文献

Managers and staff in primary health care partnerships in local catchments, particularly in regional areas, are periodically required to work collaboratively to set health priorities. Setting priorities involves making decisions about which health needs are most important and what programs will be funded to address them. There is no universally agreed set of decision-making rules for setting priorities. Dominant approaches prioritise health economics, and have favoured expert knowledge drawn from technical-rational methodologies rather than consumer involvement and community action. However, research reveals that setting priorities is a complex, value laden, contested process buffeted by competing objectives and political interests. As such, an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach is called for. Using reflective practice from a priority setting project for a primary care partnership in a local, regional catchment in Victoria, Australia, a conceptual framework for priority setting is presented that identifies 13 interconnected factors spanning economic, political, policy, epidemiological, moral, evidentiary and evaluative domains. This interdisciplinary framework extends current knowledge about the considerations and trade-offs in setting priorities among collaborating primary health care agencies. It offers a potentially valuable heuristic tool for healthcare decision-makers in rural areas.  相似文献

This article describes the results of a 15-month pilot project to determine whether producers and users of organizations’ research findings can synthesize and disseminate evidence collaboratively. The findings of the project suggest that the collaborative approach is a feasible but costly endeavor owing to differences in need, expertise, experience and context.Funding agencies should consider alternative ways to build sustainable partnerships and to address the cultural and political contexts of organizations involved with the synthesis and dissemination of evidence.  相似文献

This article reflects upon collaborative research relationships between indigenous communities and universities in social health and empowerment programmes. This article is focused on Family Well Being programme and Indigenous Men's Support Groups conducted over the last decade at Yarrabah in northern Queensland. These programmes have incorporated a process whereby the community has set research agendas, local researchers have been employed, and university researchers have facilitated the development of appropriate programmes, the capacity of the community to manage these, and programme evaluation. This article draws upon reflective data derived from intensive group workshops and semistructured, in-depth interviews with both community and university-based researchers conducted in late 2006 and early 2007. These workshops and interviews describe, often in the words of participants, the experiences, challenges and strategies for research collaborations. This article recommends positive strategies for successful partnerships and outlines some challenges faced by both community and university researchers in programmes. The findings of the interviews and workshops are thematically discussed in relation to international literature on collaborative research.  相似文献

This article describes the development and evolution of governing boards and summarizes critical findings from a research study on hospital governing boards. The purpose of the research was to examine factors that measure performance of governing boards and the relationship of governing board effectiveness to the organizational performance of hospitals. Board leaders from 64 nonprofit hospitals across the country were surveyed using the BSAQ tool, which measures board effectiveness in six areas of competency. Board competency scores of this group were compared with those of a previous group, which consisted of more than 300 nonprofit boards, and demonstrated significantly higher scores. A factor analysis conducted to compare the six competency factors between study groups revealed a strong single factor in this study. The factors that measure governing board performance were found to be consolidated into one single factor of collaborative board functioning consistent with emerging governance theory. This may support the concept of the importance of governing boards as collaborative, socially dynamic networks of leaders. The hospital performance was assessed using data from the nationally recognized program, Solucient's 100 Top Hospitals. The results demonstrate that higher performing boards did have better hospital performance in several dimensions, most notably in profitability and lower expenses. Lower expenses were related to higher scores for the BSAQ total score. Hospital profitability was positively correlated with all seven BSAQ scores. A more favorable Solucient ranking was related to hospitals that had a lower BSAQ political score. This was also found in a multiple regression model that predicted a favorable ranking when the BSAQ political score was lower. This may mean that these boards do what needs to be done to maintain excellent performance and do not let politics get in the way of their work. Although governance and its effect on hospital performance is a complex concept to study, this investigation yields findings of interest to leaders in the healthcare field.  相似文献

The Institute of Medicine has recommended that policy decisions about improvement of national public health systems be guided by sound scientific evidence. However, to date there is no national research agenda to help guide public health systems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was called upon to lead a collaborative consensus-based process to define key research questions and establish a framework to create opportunities to better coordinate, leverage, and identify public health resources, which are increasingly scarce. The public health systems research agenda that emerged from this process has 14 over-arching priority research themes. This national agenda should stimulate and guide research to meet the urgent need to improve the nation's public health systems.  相似文献

Social workers in health care settings may be most effective in the development and implementation of collaborative research studies which jointly involve academic and health service institutions. This article describes: organizational issues significant to the integration of research into a health service system; interpersonal issues that effect the perspectives of research and service professionals in the daily operation of the research project; and social work skills for collaborative research studies. IntroductionIn spite of adolescents'' rights to be involved in decisions that concern their health and life, limited research has been published reporting on their involvement in mental health research. Therefore, we aim to present experiences and reflections based on the involvement of adolescents in mental health research, to describe the collaborative relationship between researchers and coresearchers, including the values that underpin their collaboration.MethodsAn autoethnographic approach was used, combined with group reflections. The process was jointly developed, carried out and analysed by adolescent coresearchers and the project''s lead researcher over a period of 2 years. The article is jointly authored by the researcher and the ten coresearchers.ResultsSix themes were developed to describe our collaborative relationship, resulting in the involvement of adolescents in decisions about research priorities; in planning and carrying out the research; through to analysis, dissemination and communication of results. The themes include: (1) Commitment motivated by altruism, personal interests and a common purpose; (2) Inclusiveness and support to reduce social uncertainty and strengthen collaboration; (3) Reduced power differentials while ensuring clarity of roles and tasks; (4) Diversity in representation to expand the perspectives of ‘the adolescent voice’; (5) Self‐determination—supporting adolescents'' involvement in decision‐making processes; and (6) Flexible and systematic project management. The themes describe the collaboration, the underlying values and motives, the challenges faced and how they were overcome.ConclusionThis self‐reflective process describing a 4‐year collaborative research project resulted in the development of recommendations for involving adolescents in mental health research. The recommendations could potentially contribute to a change of ‘research culture’ to expand the currently limited involvement of adolescents in research.Patient or Public ContributionAdolescents have contributed as coresearchers through all phases of the research project and as coauthors of this article, including planning, participation in the self‐ and group‐reflective processes, analysis and authoring the article.  相似文献

Resurgent hopes for recovery from schizophrenia in the late 1980s had less to do with fresh empirical evidence than with focused political agitation. Recovery's promise was transformative: reworking traditional power relationships, conferring distinctive expertise on service users, rewriting the mandate of public mental health systems. Its institutional imprint has been considerably weaker. This article takes sympathetic measure of that outcome and provides an alternative framework for what recovery might mean, one drawn from disability studies and Sen's capabilities approach. By re-enfranchising agency, redressing material and symbolic disadvantage, raising the bar on fundamental entitlements and claiming institutional support for complex competencies, a capabilities approach could convert flaccid doctrine into useful guidelines and tools for public mental health.  相似文献

This article explores cross-cultural challenges that arise when university and community members collaborate in community-based participatory research. As part of a project for primary prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, researchers trained community leaders to jointly develop a research question and conduct a pilot qualitative study in a Puerto Rican community in Massachusetts. Different priorities of the community and university members about HIV as a research topic underscored the need to continuously reflect on developing a research question in community-based participatory research. Recognizing the cultural assumptions of both university and community members is an important component of capacity building among collaborative research teams.  相似文献

New nursing researchers are faced with a smorgasbord of competing methodologies. Sometimes, they are encouraged to adopt the research paradigms beloved of their senior colleagues. This is a problem if those paradigms are no longer of contemporary methodological relevance. The aim of this paper was to provide clarity about current research paradigms. It seeks to interrogate the continuing viability of positivism as a guiding paradigm for nursing research. It does this by critically analysing the methodological literature. Five major paradigms are addressed: the positivist; the interpretivist/constructivist; the transformative; the realist; and the postpositivist. Acceptance of interpretivist, transformative or realist approaches necessarily entails wholesale rejection of positivism, while acceptance of postpositivism involves its partial rejection. Postpositivism has superseded positivism as the guiding paradigm of the scientific method. The incorporation in randomized controlled trials of postpositivist assumptions indicates that even on the methodological territory that it once claimed as its own, positivism has been rendered redundant as an appropriate paradigm for contemporary nursing research.  相似文献

Teaching about multicultural families and the xenophobia (e.g., racism, sexism, heterosexism) they experience can be volatile. We describe a transformative experience in an interdisciplinary course on families that we team taught. We deconstruct student reactions to the course content and grading and describe the pedagogy of possibility we created to encourage students' ability to embrace our social justice goal. We offer four pedagogical implications regarding interdisciplinary perspectives, collaborative teaching teams, reconstructing authority, and enacting social justice.  相似文献

This article presents the results of a pilot implementation of an evaluation process designed to help community health collaboratives obtain relevant information for planning and evaluation. The Value Template Process assists collaboratives to identify performance and impact indicators that are meaningful and measurable with accessible data. The process also encourages communication and engagement in assessment among collaborative members. The pilot study demonstrated that the process's underlying assumptions of social capital were valid and that the process was feasible and useful to the community health collaborative.  相似文献

Limited research has been conducted to examine the effectiveness of existing HIV prevention and harm reduction interventions targeted to injection drug-using youth. Moreover, although there are a growing number of needle exchange programs being developed for youth throughout the United States, the effects of these services have yet to be systematically evaluated. This article describes a collaborative evaluation conducted by the Division of Adolescent Medicine, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, and Clean Needles Now, a needle exchange serving young injection drug users. The evaluation employed a multimethod research design that included both qualitative and quantitative methods. Findings are presented about how a community-based agency's service delivery philosophy can affect the design and implementation of an evaluation. Lessons learned from this collaborative evaluation are presented, including the potential benefits of incorporating harm reduction principles into research activities.  相似文献

The goal of our service is to systematize the nursing care provided to the clients with gynecological and mammary cancer who underwent radiation therapy, using the nursing process, the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) taxonomy and collaborative problems in the diagnoses phase. Therefore, we created a record card in which we briefly reported the relevant data to nursing care, containing: anamnesis, general explanations about treatment, main collaborative problems, nursing diagnoses, interventions, outcomes and evolution. This card was tested in service and evaluated by the group that had created it regarding content and design, enabling the elaboration of its last version that is presented in the article.  相似文献
