Protein C antigen levels were measured in the plasma of healthy full term infants by electroimmunoassay. During the first three months of life (on day four, at one month, two months and three months of age) protein C antigen levels were compared in breast-fed and bottle-fed infants. None of the two groups of infants received vitamin K at birth. Only at the age of three months there was a significant difference between the groups. Unexpectedly infants, who were breast-fed, had a higher protein C level at three months of age. Levels were also measured in 15 healthy children between one and three years of age. The antigen levels increase with age to reach adult values at about three years of age.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Preprandial plasma amino acid concentrations were measured at 5 and 6 months of age in 30 healthy term infants who were either breast-fed ad libitum or fed one of two different formulas (1.9 g of protein per 100 ml with a whey: casein ratio of 50:50; 2.9 g of protein per 100 ml with a whey: casein ratio of 20:80) ad libitum, plus the same supplementary food regimen. The mean plasma concentrations of total amino acids and especially total essential amino acids were higher in the formula-fed infants. Those fed formula also had plasma concentrations of methionine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, leucine, valine, threonine, aspartate, proline, lysine, tyrosine, histidine that exceeded plasma concentrations of breast-fed infants by 2 or more standard deviations. Concentrations of arginine, glutamic acid, glutamine, ornithine, serine, cystine did not differ and taurine was higher in the breast-fed infants. The data indicate that formulas in common use today during weaning (4–6 months) provide excessive protein intakes when compared to the breast-fed control infants. A lowering of protein concentration and a further manipulation of the whey: casein ratio is necessary if plasma amino acid patterns similar to those found in breast-fed infants is to be achieved with artificial feeding.  相似文献

Age and diet effects on fecal bile acids in infants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fecal bile acid patterns and concentrations have been determined for 28 infants who were followed from average ages of 3-11 months. Half were solely breast-fed and half were solely formula-fed at the beginning of the study. Breast-fed infants were found to have significantly (p less than 0.05) lower concentrations of cholic acid than the formula-fed group, up to an average age of 5 months. Concentrations of deoxycholic and lithocholic acids were directionally lower in breast-fed infants at all ages. Concentrations of chenodeoxycholic acid were similar for both groups throughout the study. At the end of the study, breast-fed infants were excreting 17% of their total bile acids in the form of secondary acids, compared to 33% for formula-fed infants. This pattern persisted long after the infants began weaning. Formula-fed infants were found to have lithocholic acid in their stools at a significantly (p less than 0.05) earlier age than breast-fed infants. Appearance of deoxycholic acid was at similar ages for both groups. Both of these secondary acids were found to occur at much younger ages (approximately 2 months) than has been previously reported. These observed differences are attributed to the distinct intestinal microbial populations encouraged by the different diets.  相似文献

The response of plasma amino acids to two bovine protein formulas with different protein content (1.6 and 1.2 g/100 ml containing 60% whey proteins and 40% caseins) was measured in term infants. These two groups of infants were compared with a group of infants that were breast-fed; all infants were fed ad libitum. Concentrations of threonine, valine and total branched chain amino acids reflected the amount of protein provided. Thus, the concentrations were higher in the higher protein formula infants from the second week of the study. In the low protein formula infants these amino acids were lower but differed from the infants on breast milk at eight and twelve weeks. Concentration of taurine was lower in the formula fed infants than they were in breast-fed infants at the end of the study. The valine/glycine ratio in the low protein formula group was lower than in the breast-fed group for the first four weeks of the study. After this time it was equal to that of the breast-fed group. These differences in plasma amino acid concentrations give further evidence that formulas now in common use for term infants provide a protein intake in excess of protein requirements after the first months of life.  相似文献

Five full-term infants with birth weights appropriate for gestational age presented with hypocalcemic tetany at 5 to 9 days of age. All infants had been fed Similac 20, a cow milk formula. Initial mean serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and magnesium (Mg) levels of the tetanic infants were 6.8, 9.5, and 1.6 mg/dL, respectively. The mean serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) level was elevated at 79 mu LEq/mL (adult normal values, less than or equal to 57 mu LEq/mL). Following restoration of normocalcemia with Ca supplements, feeding was reinstituted with Similac 20 in two infants and Similac PM 60/40 in three infants. Serum biochemical and hormonal values were compared with those of 18 exclusively breast-fed infants followed up from three weeks to six months and 14 Similac 20-fed full-term infants followed up from one week to six months. In tetanic infants, serum Ca concentrations became elevated (10.4 +/- 0.05 mg/dL; mean +/- SEM) by six weeks (vs 9.2 +/- 0.3 mg/dL in breast-fed infants) (P less than .001) and serum Mg concentrations (2.26 +/- 0.01 mg/dL) by four weeks (vs 1.92 +/- 0.07 mg/dL in breast-fed infants) (P less than .01). Mean serum P concentrations declined progressively. Mean serum PTH concentrations were elevated and ranged from 74 to 143 mu LEq/mL at two to 16 weeks (vs mean 28 to 35 mu LEq/mL in breast-fed infants (P less than .0001). In 14 formula-fed-nontetanic full-term infants, serum PTH concentrations were intermediate between formula-fed-tetanic and breast-fed infants, mean serum Ca concentrations ranged from 10.2 to 10.4 mg/dL, and mean serum P concentrations declined from 8.3 to 7.1 mg/dL. We speculate that acute hypocalcemic tetany in the study infants was induced by the relatively high P load in cow milk formulas (vs human milk); with the continued P load, secondary hyperparathyroidism continued, maintaining P, Ca, and Mg homeostasis.  相似文献

Serum levels of IgG, IgA and IgM were measured in 198 infants at ages 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12 months. By age 9 months 30 infants were still exclusively breast-fed; their IgG and IgM levels were significantly lower than those of infants weaned early to formula (before age 3.5 months). By 12 months 6 infants were still exclusively breast-fed; their IgA levels were by then also similarly lower. There was no significant difference in the number of infections experienced by these groups of infants. After 2 months on formula feeding, the IgG and IgM levels of the infants who were exclusively breast-fed for 9 months had caught up with the levels of the infants weaned early to formula. Only at 12 months of age prealbumin levels of the exclusively breast-fed infants showed a positive correlation to IgG and IgA levels; no correlation was found between immunoglobulin levels and levels of serum iron and zinc.  相似文献

Serum bile acid conjugates in breast-fed infants with prolonged jaundice were analyzed by a newly developed procedure using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence labeling. Major bile acids were cholate and chenodeoxycholate conjugates. Some of the breast-fed jaundiced infants had high levels of serum bile acid conjugates (greater than 25 mumol/L), but the mean levels of individual bile acid conjugates found in jaundiced breastfed infants were not significantly different from those in breast-fed infants without jaundice. The glycine- to taurine-conjugated bile acid ratio in breast-fed jaundiced infants was significantly lower than in breast-fed nonjaundiced infants or bottle-fed nonjaundiced infants. In breast-fed infants, the portion of taurine-conjugated bile acids increased in proportion to serum bilirubin levels. These findings suggest that alteration in conjugated bile acid patterns of breast milk jaundice is related to an increased enterohepatic circulation of bile acids as well as bilirubin in infants fed on breast milk that contains high amounts of taurine.  相似文献

We have followed the establishment of one group of intestinal microflora-associated characteristics, namely, the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), in 30 healthy children, by gas chromatography analysis of fecal samples taken at 0, 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24 months of age. Acetic and propionic acids were the principal SCFAs at 1 and 3 months. Successively, the production of iso- and n-butyric, valeric, and caproic acids was established. At 2 years, the absolute amounts of all SCFAs with the exception of n-valeric acid had reached adult values. However, not all children had achieved a typically adult range of stool SCFAs by the end of the study. Both absolute and relative amounts of SCFAs were influenced by exposure to foods other than breast milk and exposure to antibiotic therapy. After standardization for exposure to foods other than breast milk, a positive age factor could be seen between 0 and 1 month of age for total amounts produced of SCFAs, acetic, propionic, and n-butyric acids. After this time, however, no clear age factor could be distinguished.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The success of familial compliance with a dietary manipulation programme was studied prospectively in 91 newborn babies from atopic families for up to 12 months. The control group consisted of 72 infants from non-atopic families. The percentages of infants breast-fed at the age of six months were 58% and 38% in the study group and control group, respectively. The introduction of cow's milk based formulas was postponed until the age of three months in 63% of the infants in the study group and 47% of the infants in the control group. Solid food was avoided during the first three months in 76% and 45% of the infants in the study group and control group, respectively. Maternal age, smoking and low social class were associated with poor compliance. The existence of atopic dermatitis in any member of the family was associated with good compliance. The main advantages of our programme were the increased number of children breast-fed until the age of six months, and the reduced number of infants introduced to cow's milk based formulas or solid food before three months of age.  相似文献

Iron and the exclusively breast-fed infant from birth to six months   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study was designed to determine whether normal, full-term, exclusively breast-fed infants develop iron deficiency anemia, as defined by hemoglobin or red blood cell indices more than two standard deviations below the age-specific mean, or depletion of iron stores, as defined by an abnormally low serum ferritin level. Thirty-three breast-fed infants were followed from birth to 6 months. Maternal blood and cord blood at delivery, and venous blood from the infants at 2, 4, and 6 months were analyzed for anemia as defined above. At 6 months of age, the mean hemoglobin concentration of these infants was slightly higher than the normal mean; four of 33 infants (12%) had a mean corpuscular volume greater than 2 SD below the reported normal mean; and two of 33 infants (6%) had a serum ferritin level less than 12 ng protein/ml. These data suggest that the infant who is exclusively breast-fed for the first 6 months of life is not at high risk for the development of iron deficiency anemia or the depletion of iron stores during that time.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Protein quality of breast milk is superior to that of formula proteins. To ensure that the protein intake is sufficient, starter formulas with conventional protein composition provide a protein/energy ratio of 2.2-2.5 g per 100 kcal to infants, which is much higher than that supplied with breast milk. Several studies have shown that formula-fed infants have higher plasma or serum urea concentrations than breast-fed infants do. We tested if feeding formulas with improved protein quality and a protein content corresponding to the minimum level that is consistent with international recommendations (1.8 g/100 kcal) allows patients to achieve normal growth and plasma urea concentrations. METHODS: Healthy term infants were enrolled into the study and were either breast-fed or randomly assigned to three formula-fed groups. Formula-fed infants received either a standard formula with a protein/energy ratio of 2.2 g/100 kcal, whereas the two other groups received formulas with a protein/energy ratio of 1.8g/100 kcal differing mainly by their source of protein. Subjects received breast milk or these formulas ad libitum as the sole source of energy from birth to four months of age in a controlled blind design (except for the breast-fed group). Anthropometric measurements (body weight and length) were obtained at birth, at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days. Energy and protein intakes were calculated from three-day dietary records. Blood was collected for biochemical measurements at 30, 60, and 120 days. RESULTS: No differences were found between the four feeding groups for weight- and length-gains or for body mass indices (BMI). No differences in energy intakes between the formula-fed groups could be found, whereas protein intakes were less in infants fed the 1.8 g/100 kcal formulas. Plasma urea levels of the infants fed the 1.8 g/100 kcal formulas were closer to those found in the breast-fed infants. CONCLUSION: Improvement of the amino acid profile permits a whey predominant starter formula with 1.8 g protein per 100 kcal to meet the needs of normal term infants during the first four months of life.  相似文献

Iron status in 15 low birth weight infants, 1000–2499 g, on breast feeding was studied longitudinally for the first 6 months of age, and the findings compared to those of 30 low birth weight infants receiving a proprietary iron-fortified formula. The two groups received no iron supplement until they developed iron deficiency. The incidence of iron deficiency at 6 months was significantly greater in the breast-fed group than in the formula-fed group (86% v 33%). The breast-fed group had significantly lower serum ferritin and hemoglobin values after 4 months of age. The findings indicate that breast-fed low birth weight infants have a higher risk of developing iron deficiency and should receive iron supplementation from 2 months of age.Abbreviations TIBC total iron-binding capacity - MCV mean corpuscular volume  相似文献

Concentrations of the main lipid classes in plasma and the blood phosphoglyceride fatty acid patterns were measured in 3-month-old infants, fed breast-milk or an industrial manufactured formula. The levels of cholesterol and phosphoglycerides were in the normal range for young adults, but the triglyceride concentration was twice as high as in adults. There were no significant differences in the levels of the plasma lipids between the two groups, but the mean of the triglycerides was 25 % higher in the formula-fed group. The plasma and red cell phosphoglycerides had already assumed a fatty acid pattern of adult type. The concentration of the total polyenoic acids was significantly lower in the breast-fed group, the difference being entirely confined to the fatty acids of the linoleic acid series. Linoleic acid was 27% and 40%, respectively, lower in plasma phosphoglycerides and red cell lecithin of breast-fed than of formula-fed infants, but arachidonic acid did not show any significant difference in the two groups. The concentration of the fatty acids of the linolenic acid series was higher in the breast-fed infants. The blood lecithin ratio between the fatty acids of the linolenic acid series and the linoleic acid series was thus much lower in the formula-fed than in the breast-fed infants, the ratio being closely correlated with the dietary linolenate/linoleate ratio. Although the concentration of essential fatty acids was low in both plasma and red cell phosphoglycerides of breast-fed infants, there was no increase of 20: 3 (n – 9).  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of red blood cell (RBC) phospholipids in low-birth-weight infants was determined immediately after delivery and during the first 3 months of life. In the first study, infants were fed either human milk or two formulas with different fatty acid compositions but no long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA). Both groups of formula-fed infants had significantly lower levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in RBC phospholipids compared with breast-fed infants. RBC phospholipid DHA was similar in the two formula groups at all ages. In the second study, infants received either a non-supplemented or a LCPUFA-supplemented formula. DHA remained stable in RBC phospholipids of infants supplemented with LCPUFA, whereas DHA decreased in RBC phospholipids of unsupplemented infants. These results confirm that adding DHA to formulas is more effective than increasing 18:3 n-3 content, in maintaining RBC phospholipid DHA levels.  相似文献
