It is not uncommon for people to openly admit to pirating information from the internet despite the known legal consequences. Those same people are often less inclined to steal the same physical item from a shop. This raises the question, why do people have fewer reservations with stealing intangible items compared to tangible? Using questionnaires and fMRI we provide evidence across three studies as to the differences between tangible and intangible theft. In a questionnaire (Study 1), participants revealed that across different conditions they were more willing to steal intangible compared to tangible goods. Study 2a used fMRI to reveal that a network involved in imagining objects was more active when participants were representing intangible versus tangible objects, suggesting people have greater difficulty representing intangible items. Study 2b used fMRI to show that when stealing tangible objects versus intangible, participants had increased activation in left lateral orbitofrontal cortex, an area typically activated in response to morally laden situations. The findings from the current investigation provide novel insights into the higher prevalence of intangible theft and suggest that differential neural representation of tangible and intangible items may, in part, explain why people are more willing to steal intangible items.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the temporal relationships of anxiety and depressive disorders, their risk factors and to explore why people with anxiety develop depression. METHOD: Data from an original 4-5-year prospective-longitudinal community study (N= 3,021) of adolescents and young adults with DSM-IV anxiety and depressive disorders identified with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview are used to examine risk factors, as well as course and outcome. RESULTS: (i) Anxiety disorders, except for panic disorder, are almost always primary conditions. (ii) Over the follow-up period, rates of comorbid anxiety-depression increased substantially and resulted in increased impairment and disabilities. (iii) Predictors for first onset of 'pure' depressive and 'pure' anxiety disorders revealed recognizable differences. (iv) Baseline clinical characteristics of anxiety disorders were significantly associated with an increased risk to develop major depression over the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that most anxiety disorders are primary disorders that substantially increase the risk for secondary depression.  相似文献

Objective: To explore the reasons given for refusal of day services, and to examine the relationship between willingness to accept day services and clinical variables.

Method: Fifty people with dementia who lived alone and had refused day services were interviewed.

Results: The most common reasons for reluctance to attend day services were the belief that they did not need day services, that they liked being on their own, and the belief that they would not enjoy it. People who persistently refused day services tended to have additional worries about meeting new people, losing their independence and being institutionalised. Fifty-four per cent of people with dementia who lived alone and had refused day services scored six or more on the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, suggesting possible presence of major depression.

Conclusion: In patients with dementia who live alone and refuse day services, their misconceptions about day services and possibility of undiagnosed depression need further exploration.  相似文献

Slow-wave sleep consists in slowly recurring waves that are associated with a large-scale spatio-temporal synchrony across neocortex. These slow-wave complexes alternate with brief episodes of fast oscillations, similar to the sustained fast oscillations that occur during the wake state. We propose that alternating fast and slow waves consolidate information acquired previously during wakefulness. Slow-wave sleep would thus begin with spindle oscillations that open molecular gates to plasticity, then proceed by iteratively 'recalling' and 'storing' information primed in neural assemblies. This scenario provides a biophysical mechanism consistent with the growing evidence that sleep serves to consolidate memories.  相似文献

Millions of people worldwide everyday search Google or Wikipedia to look for health-related information. Aim of this study was to evaluate and interpret web search queries for terms related to movement disorders (MD) in English-speaking countries and their changes over time. We analyzed information regarding the volume of online searches in Google and Wikipedia for the most common MD and their treatments. We determined the highest search volume peaks to identify possible relation with online news headlines. The volume of searches for some queries related to MD entered in Google enormously increased over time. Most queries were related to definition, subtypes, symptoms and treatment (mostly to adverse effects, or alternatively, to possible alternative treatments). The highest peaks of MD search queries were temporally related to news about celebrities suffering from MD, to specific mass-media events or to news concerning pharmaceutic companies or scientific discoveries on MD. An increasing number of people use Google and Wikipedia to look for terms related to MD to obtain information on definitions, causes and symptoms, possibly to aid initial self-diagnosis. MD information demand and the actual prevalence of different MDs do not travel together: web search volume may mirrors patients’ fears and worries about some particular disorders perceived as more serious than others, or may be driven by release of news about celebrities suffering from MD, “breaking news” or specific mass-media events regarding MD.  相似文献

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells release vesicles into their environment. To answer the question why eukaryotic cells release vesicles, we may learn from prokaryotes. Bacteria release outer membrane vesicles, resembling microparticles, which act as “multi-purpose carriers”. They contain signalling molecules for other bacteria, deliver toxins to host cells and exchange DNA encoding virulence genes between bacteria. Similarly, cell-derived microparticles and exosomes from eukaryotic cells are multi-purpose carriers containing e.g. signalling molecules, cellular waste and functional genetic information. To illustrate our rapidly increasing knowledge on the multiple roles that cellular microparticles and exosomes play in disease progression, we focus on cancer, which is one of the best studied diseases in this aspect. The clinical applications of microparticles and exosomes, including diagnosis, prognosis and therapy, in cancer are discussed.  相似文献

It is argued that the approaches used up to now for analyzing dysfunctional relationship patterns are more or less explicitly based on a conflict model and therefore not adequate for describing relationships characterized by structural impairments of a patient's personality. Using the concepts of conflict and structure as derived from the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnostic system (OPD-2), four principles of a dysfunctional relationship formation are discussed. It is shown that the differentiation of conflict- and structure-related pathology is highly significant with regard to the selection of an appropriate psychotherapeutic strategy. Furthermore, the connections between the OPD axes relationship, conflict, and structure are conceptualized.  相似文献

CNS axons differ in diameter (d) by nearly 100-fold (~0.1-10 μm); therefore, they differ in cross-sectional area (d(2)) and volume by nearly 10,000-fold. If, as found for optic nerve, mitochondrial volume fraction is constant with axon diameter, energy capacity would rise with axon volume, also as d(2). We asked, given constraints on space and energy, what functional requirements set an axon's diameter? Surveying 16 fiber groups spanning nearly the full range of diameters in five species (guinea pig, rat, monkey, locust, octopus), we found the following: (1) thin axons are most numerous; (2) mean firing frequencies, estimated for nine of the identified axon classes, are low for thin fibers and high for thick ones, ranging from ~1 to >100 Hz; (3) a tract's distribution of fiber diameters, whether narrow or broad, and whether symmetric or skewed, reflects heterogeneity of information rates conveyed by its individual fibers; and (4) mitochondrial volume/axon length rises ≥d(2). To explain the pressure toward thin diameters, we note an established law of diminishing returns: an axon, to double its information rate, must more than double its firing rate. Since diameter is apparently linear with firing rate, doubling information rate would more than quadruple an axon's volume and energy use. Thicker axons may be needed to encode features that cannot be efficiently decoded if their information is spread over several low-rate channels. Thus, information rate may be the main variable that sets axon caliber, with axons constrained to deliver information at the lowest acceptable rate.  相似文献

Millions of people worldwide use the Internet daily as a source of health information. Google is the most popular search engine and is used by patients and physicians to search for online health-related information. This study aimed to evaluate changes in web search behavior occurring in English-speaking countries over time for terms related to epilepsy and epileptic seizures. Using Google Trends, data on global search queries for the terms “epilepsy”, “seizure”, and “seizures” between January 2004 and September 2013 were analyzed. The reduction over time in search queries for the term “epilepsy” (and, to a lesser extent, “seizures”) was counterbalanced by an increased trend in searches for the term “seizure”. Most terms associated with the search queries were related to symptoms of seizures, especially tonic–clonic seizures, and to seizures occurring in children. Three peaks in search volume over the period studied corresponded to news of celebrities having seizures. The volume of searches for the term “epilepsy SUDEP” was found to be enormously increased over time. Most people appear to use search engines to look for terms related to epilepsy to obtain information on seizure symptoms, possibly to aid initial self-diagnosis. Fears and worries about epileptic seizures and news on celebrities with epilepsy seem to be major factors that influence online search behavior.  相似文献

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are a class of steroid hormones that have been known to be involved in various physiological processes and to play a pivotal role in preserving basal and stress-related homeostasis. GCs are also widely used clinically as anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, anti-shock drugs. It is believed traditionally that GCs exert most of their effects genomically. In addition to the well-known classical genomic mechanisms, GCs also affect various functions via rapid, nongenomic mechanisms. The therapeutic benefits of nongenomic GC actions have been exploited in clinical medicine, especially with high-dose pulsed glucocorticoid administration. However, it is certainly not the case that the inherent nongenomic glucocorticoid mechanisms evolved only for their clinical utility. Here, we review the recent literature on nongenomic actions of GCs related to stress and the physiological significance of these actions, and we propose reasons why nongenomic mechanisms of GC actions are needed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Dropout rates from inpatient treatment for eating disorders are very high and have a negative impact on outcome. The purpose of this study was to identify personality factors predictive of dropout from hospitalization. A total of 64 adult patients with anorexia nervosa consecutively hospitalized in a specialized unit were included; 19 patients dropped out. The dropout group and the completer group were compared for demographic variables, clinical features, personality dimensions, and personality disorders. There was no link between clinical features and dropout, and among demographic variables, only age was associated with dropout. Personality factors, comorbidity with a personality disorder and Self-transcendence dimension, were statistically predictive of premature termination of hospitalization. In a multivariate model, these two factors remain significant. Personality traits (Temperament and Character Inventory personality dimension and comorbid personality disorder) are significantly associated with dropout from inpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa. Implications for clinical practice, to diminish the dropout rate, will be discussed.  相似文献

Guggisberg et al. (2010) reviewed the evidence for the origin and function of yawning, and conclude that theories describing a physiological role lack support. Instead, they argue research supports the notion that yawning has a communicative function. Contrary to the authors’ claim that the social/communication hypothesis has the “best experimental evidence”, there is in fact no definitive experimental support for the predictions of this model. Furthermore, the authors claim to take an evolutionary perspective, but sufficient examples across the comparative (non-primate) literature are missing, and they fail to acknowledge phylogenic history. Due to the ubiquity of this behavior across vertebrates, and the regularity of its occurrence in a number of different physiological states and social contexts, it is likely that instead of serving one purpose, yawning is multifunctional across a number of species. The most parsimonious explanation for the origin of yawning suggests that any social value is a derived feature, while the primitive feature or function is physiological. The current paper addresses these concerns, and identifies a number of other weaknesses in the social/communication hypothesis as a global explanation for the origin and function of yawning.  相似文献
