Neurosecretory cells are present in the cerebral, parietal, and visceral ganglia of Oncidium verraculatum Cuv. During the reproductive period of the animal the cerebral ganglia show neurosecretory activity. As the reproductive period advances peculiar glia cells are found in large numbers in two pouch-like extensions of the cerebral ganglia. These extensions also contain centrally situated ganglion cells whose axons contain phloxinophilic droplets. A release mechanism involving these glia cells is suggested. The parietal and visceral ganglia show secretory activity after the reproductive period is over, when fat begins to accumulate in the body cavity.  相似文献

The effect of sub-lethal feeding of bait formulations containing molluscicidal component of Ferula asafoetida (ferulic acid, umbelliferone), Syzygium aromaticum (eugenol) and Carum carvi (limonene) on biochemical changes in the ovotestis of snail Lymnaea acuminata were studied. Bait formulations feeding to L. acuminata were studied in clear glass aquaria having diameter of 30 cm. Baits were prepared from different binary combinations of attractant amino acid (valine, aspartic acid, lysine and alanine 10 mM) in 100 mL of 2% agar solution + sub-lethal (20% and 60% of 24h LC50) doses of different molluscicides (ferulic acid, umbelliferone, eugenol and limonene). These baits caused maximum significant reduction in free amino acid, protein, DNA, RNA levels i.e. 41.37, 23.56, 48.36 and 14.29% of control in the ovotestis of the snail, respectively. Discontinuation of feeding after treatment of 60% of 96h LC50 of molluscicide containing bait for next 72h caused a significant recovery in free amino acid, protein, DNA and RNA levels in the ovotestis of L. acuminata.  相似文献

Molluscs with shells very similar to Oncomelania nosophora were collected at Pedro Leopoldo and Lagoa Santa counties, MG, Brazil. They were identified, according to shell and soft part morphology, as Idiopyrgus souleyetianus. The others hidrobioids identified in Brazil are also listed.  相似文献

Hemiplasy and homoplasy in the karyotypic phylogenies of mammals   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Phylogenetic reconstructions are often plagued by difficulties in distinguishing phylogenetic signal (due to shared ancestry) from phylogenetic noise or homoplasy (due to character-state convergences or reversals). We use a new interpretive hypothesis, termed hemiplasy, to show how random lineage sorting might account for specific instances of seeming “phylogenetic discordance” among different chromosomal traits, or between karyotypic features and probable species phylogenies. We posit that hemiplasy is generally less likely for underdominant chromosomal polymorphisms (i.e., those with heterozygous disadvantage) than for neutral polymorphisms or especially for overdominant rearrangements (which should tend to be longer-lived), and we illustrate this concept by using examples from chiropterans and afrotherians. Chromosomal states are especially powerful in phylogenetic reconstructions because they offer strong signatures of common ancestry, but their evolutionary interpretations remain fully subject to the principles of cladistics and the potential complications of hemiplasy.  相似文献

This study analyses the basic reproductive biology of the schistosonie-vector snail Bulinus forskalli. This hermaphroditic species can self-fertilize. Variation of the mating system was analysed in two populations from Cameroon in a three-step experiment. (i) The fecundity (number of eggs and of egg capsules) of isolated virgin individuals from both populations was followed over a month, as well as the survival of offspring from these individuals. Estimates of these parameters were intermediate. Our results also indicate that inbreeding depression has a maximum value of about one-half in both populations. No difference was observed between populations for both the overall fecundity of adults and survival of offspring. (ii) Individuals were then paired either within, or between populations over three successive days, and the number of copulations recorded. Copulations were observed in all situations, including between-population pairs. No significant dlifference in the number of copulations per pair was detected. However, this value decreased with time, and reciprocal copulations were significantly less numerous between than within populations. (iii) Individuals that successfully copulated as female in (ii) were isolated, and their fecundity was followed over 3 weeks. The fecundity of individuals that had been maintained isolated over the whole experiment served as a control. No significant difference was on the whole detected. Our results collectively suggest that the individuals from the two populations studied are rather selfers, confirming that B. forskalii is a preferentially selfing species. There is also some pre-zygotic isolation against crosses between populations.  相似文献

The rissooidean snail genus Oncomelania is of medical interest as various taxa are hosts for the human blood fluke Schistosoma and the lung fluke Paragonimus; because of close co-evolved host-parasite-relationships, snail diversity may reflect parasite diversity. There is a considerable amount of confusion regarding the identity of smooth- and ribbed-shelled populations of Oncomelania hupensis in eastern China. We therefore studied the genetic variation, population structure, phylogenetic relationships and ecology of five smooth- and five ribbed-shelled populations in Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu provinces. Based on sequencing data of a fragment of the mitochondrial gene for cytochrome oxidase I from 80 individuals, we found little genetic variability within the ingroup-individuals studied here (average pi=0.01922). Moreover, within the ingroup, smooth-shelled individuals cluster together with ribbed-shelled individuals. We therefore consider all smooth- and ribbed-shelled populations of Oncomelania throughout the lower Yangtze River basin to belong to the subspecies O. hupensis hupensis. Our data indicate that ribbing in O. h. hupensis is associated with the annual floods of the Yangtze River. The greatest haplotype (d(H)) and nucleotide diversities (pi) are found in aggregates of ribbed-shelled snails along areas of the Yangtze River drainage subject to flooding. In areas not affected by flooding, the shells are smooth and genetic diversity decreases significantly.  相似文献

Autosomal dominant forms of familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) are associated with increased production of the amyloid beta peptide, Abeta42, which is derived from the amyloid protein precursor (APP). In FAD, as well as in sporadic forms of the illness, Abeta peptides accumulate abnormally in the brain in the form of amyloid plaques. Here, we show that overexpression of FAD(717V-->F)-mutant human APP in neurons of transgenic mice decreases the density of presynaptic terminals and neurons well before these mice develop amyloid plaques. Electrophysiological recordings from the hippocampus revealed prominent deficits in synaptic transmission, which also preceded amyloid deposition by several months. Although in young mice, functional and structural neuronal deficits were of similar magnitude, functional deficits became predominant with advancing age. Increased Abeta production in the context of decreased overall APP expression, achieved by addition of the Swedish FAD mutation to the APP transgene in a second line of mice, further increased synaptic transmission deficits in young APP mice without plaques. These results suggest a neurotoxic effect of Abeta that is independent of plaque formation.  相似文献

In 1973 planorbid snails then identified as Biomphalaria straminea were discovered in Hong Kong, China. It was assumed that these snails had been introduced to Hong Kong via the import of tropical fish by air from South America. In 2012 Biomphalaria were found for the first time in Guangdong Province, China. In view of the renewed interest in these invasive snails, a morphological and DNA-sequence based phylogenetic study was undertaken for seven populations of Biomphalaria snails collected in Guangdong. Morphologically and phylogenetically, five of the populations clustered more closely with Biomphalaria kuhniana than with B. straminea. Levels of genetic diversity among the populations were about half those of autochthonous populations in Brazil, the phylogenetic relationships did not correlate with a radiation from any one international port in China, and different lineages appeared associated with different ports. Consequently in explaining the current distribution of the snails, multiple colonization events, each establishing a new local snail population near to maritime international container ports, were considered more likely than the spread of snails from Hong Kong to China. The displacement of B. straminea by B. kuhniana in Guangdong is considered as an explanation for the habitat changes observed among the snails between Hong Kong in the 1980s and the present. The conclusions of the study are that any risk of Schistosoma mansoni transmission in China is more likely to come from parasite importation in the intramolluscan stage, than from transmission by migrant workers from South America or Africa. In addition, although likely to be rare, sporadic outbreaks of imported schistosomiasis (caused by invading infected snails) could be a threat to public health in the vicinity of International container ports (not only in Guangdong Province). Further work is called for to investigate further the presence of B. kuhniana and its potential interactions with B. straminea (the former is thought to be incompatible with S. mansoni), and the responses of Chinese Biomphalaria to potential competitors such as Thiaridae. The current expansion of container ports in Brazil and Venezuela, and the increase in trade with China, is likely to accentuate any current risk of imported schistosomiasis, and surveillance around ports in China, together with further research, are necessary.  相似文献

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) C(10)H(12)N(2)O plays a central role in several physiological processes in marine molluscs, especially in reproduction. 5-HT acts as a neurohormone to modulate spawning, parturition and meiosis by reinitiating prophase in arrested oocytes. Preliminary experiments using 10(-5)M 5-HT dissolved in aquarium water showed that 5-HT induced spawning movements in ripe clams and in both sexes of Mya arenaria while only a few males released sperm. The occurrence of serotoninergic fibers was demonstrated by PAP immunohistochemical reaction in the gonad of both sexes during gametogenesis. In an organism infected by the trematode parasite Prosorhynchus squamatus, we showed that serotoninergic innervation completely disappeared around the gonad's follicles. Although the gonad and digestive gland are intertwined, no serotoninergic innervations were found in the digestive gland. These findings suggest, for the first time to our knowledge in the soft shell clam, that serotonin might be involved in the regulation of gametogenesis.  相似文献

Phagocytosis of yeast by haemocytes of Biomphalaria glabrata, intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, is influenced strongly by host plasma components, although it can occur without involvement of such factors. Plasma from two strains of B. glabrata which are resistant to S. mansoni differs in its opsonic properties from the plasma of a susceptible strain. This may reflect the principles which determine compatibility or incompatibility in this host-parasite system. Opsonization is a time-dependent process: short periods of incubation in plasma from all strains reduces subsequent phagocytosis in the absence of plasma factors, whereas longer incubation in resistant strain plasma is markedly opsonic. Haemocytes from all strains examined are equally competent in their recognition of either native or opsonized yeast.  相似文献

Previous studies reported that ACTH molecules influence chemotactic and phagocytic activities of hemocytes in the freshwater snail, Planorbarius corneus. The present study reveals that ACTH and CRF affect the release of biogenic amines. Hemocytes from P. corneus hemolymph incubated in vitro with ACTH for 15, 30, and 45 min released epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. The greatest release occurred after 15 min, while after 45 min the values were similar to those of the controls. Similar incubations with CRF also provoked a release of biogenic amines, this being mainly mediated by the release of endogenous ACTH. These data suggest that (i) ACTH and CRF provoke the release of biogenic amines; (ii) there is a direct relationship between CRF, ACTH, and biogenic amines, with the hemocytes as the target; (iii) exogenous ACTH can mimic an ancestral type of stress response; (iv) the major pathway of the stress response in P. corneus is mediated by a CRF-ACTH-biogenic amine axis. These data should help to unravel part of the complex molecular signaling mechanisms involved in the physiological/endocrinological reaction of invertebrate organisms to stress, and suggest that a stress response unexpectedly similar to that present in mammalian cells is detectable in invertebrates.  相似文献

Investigating Mollusca prosobranchia of the Bithyniidae family in the water reservoirs of the Novosibirsk Region in 1994-1998 first revealed that Codiella troscheli had the trematode Metorchis albidus (Braun, 1893). The species affiliation of the trematode was experimentally verified. This paper presents the results of studies of the seasonal and daily emission of M. albidus cercariae and data on their longevity in the environment, on the ability of the cercariae to live in fish and that of metacercariae in the body of a definitive host. The studies have indicated that not only the trematode Opisthorchis felineus, but also C. troscheli may develop in the C. troscheli mollusks, which should be taken into account in both describing the natural foci of opisthorchiasis and diagnosing opisthorchiasis and metorchiasis.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to test the susceptibility of Biomphalaria tenagophila to the infection with strain SJ of Schistosoma mansoni in the F1, F2 and non-selected parental generation. The potential adaptation of B. tenagophila to desiccation, in healthy mollusks and those exposed to the larvae of S. mansoni of the F1, F2 and non-selected parental generations was also studied. The presence of mucus and soil, at the shell opening, protected the snails against desiccation, favoring survival. The healthy mollusks performed more attempts against desiccation than those exposed to the larvae of the parasite. The mortality rate, during desiccation, was higher among mollusks that remained buried and with the shell opening unobstructed. During the desiccation period the stage of development of the parasite was influenced by the weight loss and the survival of the snails. The longer the period of desiccation, the greater was the weight loss observed, abbreviating survival. The non-selected parental generation was more sensitive to desiccation than the F1 and F2 generations, both in healthy mollusks and in those exposed to S. mansoni larvae. Healthy mollusks were more resistant to desiccation than those exposed to the larvae of the S. mansoni. Desiccation did not interrupt the development of S. mansoni larvae in mollusks, causing a delay in the cercariae elimination. The susceptibility of B. tenagophila to the SJ strain of S. mansoni, in mollusks maintained in water during the larvae incubation period, was similar in all three generations.  相似文献

The human lung fluke Paragonimus is transmitted by gastropod taxa of two superfamilies: Ceritheoidea and Rissooidea. The question whether or not Paragonimus shows the same specificity of host-parasite coevolved relationship as the human blood fluke Schistosoma was inspired by the finding of two sympatric snail species as hosts for Paragonimus skrjabini in Fujian Province, China: Gammatricula and Erhaia. The former species can clearly be classified as Pomatiopsidae: Triculinae. The latter has previously been classified as Pomatiopsidae: Pomatiopsinae. However, this classification based on anatomical characteristics is uncertain. In order to obtain a robust phylogenetic hypothesis for Erhaia, we have studied three gene fragments from this taxon as well as from twelve related taxa. The data show that the species involved represent four families: Pomatiopsidae, Hydrobiidae, Cochliopidae (here raised to family status), and Amnicolidae. Erhaia fits securely into the Amnicolidae. This indicates that P. skrjabini has not coevolved with snail lineages. However, P. skrjabini has so far only been reported from rissooidean snails, whereas members of the Paragonimus westermani complex have only been found in ceritheoidean snails. The implication is that there is a host specificity on the superfamily level. However, Asian freshwater species of the Ceritheoidea and Rissooidea usually are not sympatric and often prefer different habitats. It is therefore possible that ecological niche partitioning plays the primary role for Paragonimus evolution.  相似文献
