PURPOSE: Chlamydia Pneumoniae has been shown to be associated with atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). The possible association between AAA expansion and C pneumoniae infection was therefore assessed. METHODS: Blood samples were taken from patients with an AAA that was considered for surgical repair after having been diagnosed by means of the Chichester aneurysm screening program (UK) as having an initially infrarenal aortic diameter of 3.0 to 5.9 cm. The patients were examined prospectively for as long as 11.5 years (mean, 4.1 years) with ultrasound scanning. Of 110 patients considered for surgery, 90 men and 10 women had blood samples taken. Their IgG and IgA antibodies against C pneumoniae were measured by means of a microimmunofluorescence test. Unpaired t tests, multiple linear regression analyses, and logistic regression analyses were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: A total of 44% (95% CI, 31%-55%) of the men with an AAA had an IgA titer of 64 or more, an IgG titer of 128 or more, or both, compared with 10% of the women with an AAA (OR = 7.2; 95% CI, 1.05-160.8). A titer of IgG of 128 or more was significantly associated with higher expansion (5.3 vs 2.6 mm per year), even after adjustment for initial AAA size and age. A significant positive correlation between both IgA and IgG titers and mean annual expansion was observed (r = 0.28; 95% CI, 0.05-0.49; and r = 0.45; 95% CI, 0.24-0.62, respectively), persisting after adjusting for initial AAA size and age. An IgG titer of 128 or more was present significantly more often in cases with an expansion greater than 1 cm annually (adjusted OR = 12.6; 95% CI, 1.37-293). CONCLUSION: A high proportion of men with an AAA has signs of infection with C pneumoniae. The progression of their AAAs was positively correlated with the presence of indicators of C pneumoniae infection.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The cysteine protease inhibitor cystatin C may play a role in the development and progression of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). METHODS: From a mass screening trial of men aged 65-73 years, 151 small AAAs were followed for a mean of 2.9 years. Of these patients, 142 had serum samples taken to determine the levels of cystatin C, creatinine and C-reactive protein (CRP). RESULTS: Serum cystatin C concentration correlated negatively with AAA size (r = - 0.22 (95 per cent confidence interval (c.i.) - 0.59 to - 0.02)) and annual expansion rate (r = - 0.24 (95 per cent c.i. - 0.75 to - 0.05)), persisting after adjustment for renal function, smoking, diastolic blood pressure, CRP, age and AAA size. Creatinine clearance and CRP did not correlate with size or expansion rate. Thirty-one AAAs had expanded to over 50 mm, when operation was recommended. The serum level of cystatin C was a significant predictor of this occurrence, with a sensitivity and specificity of 61 and 57 per cent respectively. However, initial AAA size had the optimal sensitivity and specificity (both 81 per cent) in this regard. CONCLUSION: Deficiency of cystatin C was associated with increased aneurysm size and expansion rate, possibly due to lack of inhibition of cysteine proteases.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Macrolide treatment has been reported to lower the risk of recurrent ischaemic heart disease. The influence of macrolides on the expansion rate of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) remains unknown. The aim was to investigate the effect of roxithromycin on the expansion rate of small AAAs. METHODS: A total of 92 subjects with a small AAA were recruited from two populations. One population consisted of 6339 men aged 65-73 years who were offered a hospital-based mass screening programme for AAA. From this population 66 subjects were recruited. The remaining 26 men were recruited from among 49 subjects diagnosed at interval screening for an initial aortic diameter between 25 and 29 mm. Subjects were randomized to receive either oral roxithromycin 300 mg once daily for 28 days or matching placebo, and followed for a mean of 1.5 years. RESULTS: During the first year the mean annual expansion rate of AAAs was reduced by 44 [corrected] per cent in the intervention group (1.56 mm per year), compared with 2.80 mm per year following placebo (P = 0.02). During the second year the difference was only 5 per cent [corrected]. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that roxithromycin treatment and initial AAA size were significantly related to AAA expansion when adjusted for smoking, diastolic blood pressure and immunoglobulin A level of 20 or more [corrected]. Logistic regression analysis confirmed a significant difference in expansion rates above 2 mm annually between the intervention and placebo groups: odds ratio = 0.09 (95 per cent confidence interval 0.01-0.83) [corrected]. CONCLUSION: In comparison to placebo, roxithromycin 300 mg daily for 4 weeks reduced the expansion rate of AAAs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: to study the influence of serologically diagnosed chronic infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae on the progression of lower limb atherosclerosis in a group of disposed men. MATERIAL AND METHODS: the highest systolic brachial and lowest systolic ankle blood pressures were followed for an average of 2.7 years in 129 men aged 65-73 years with conservatively treated small abdominal aortic aneurysms. Blood samples were taken to measure low-density lipoprotein and IgA and IgG titres of antibodies against C. pneumoniae by a microimmunofluorescence test. RESULTS: the prevalences of seropositivity varied from 43 to 83% depending on the definition. The ankle-brachial blood pressure index of the IgA-seropositive [corrected] men decreases by 11%, while it decreased by 4.8% among IgA-seronegative men (p<0.05). The significant difference persisted in a multiple-regression analysis adjusting for age, smoking, initial systolic ankle BP, and initial brachial systolic or diastolic BP, but disappeared after adjusting for the level of low-density lipoprotein. CONCLUSIONS: C. pneumoniae infection is associated with the progression of atherosclerosis.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Eradication of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection and inhibition of elastolytic matrix metalloproteinases with doxycycline have been suggested to reduce the growth rates of small abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). We designed a study to investigate the efficacy of doxycycline in reducing the expansion of small AAAs. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study that was set in a university referral hospital. The study group consisted of 32 of 34 initially eligible patients who had an AAA diameter perpendicular to the aortic axis of 30 mm or more in size or a ratio of infrarenal to suprarenal aortic diameter of 1.2 or more and a diameter less than 55 mm. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either doxycycline (150 mg daily) or placebo during a 3-month period and underwent ultrasound surveillance during an 18-month period. Outcome measures included aneurysm expansion rates, the number of patients who had AAA rupture or repair, C pneumoniae antibody titers, and serum concentrations of C-reactive protein. RESULTS: The aneurysm expansion rate in the doxycycline group was significantly lower than that in the placebo group during the 6- to 12-month (P = .01) and the 12- to 18-month periods (P =.01). Five patients (41%) in the placebo group and 1 patient (7%) in the doxycycline group had an overall expansion of the aneurysm of 5 mm or more during the 18-month follow-up. Among the placebo group patients, a higher expansion rate was observed in those with enhanced C pneumoniae immunoglobulin G antibody titers (> 128) than in those with lower titers (P = .03). Doxycycline treatment had no clear effect on antibody titers. However, at 6-month follow-up, C-reactive protein levels in the doxycycline group were significantly lower than the baseline levels (P = .01). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this small pilot study suggest that doxycycline may favorably alter the outcome of patients with small AAA. However, because of the small size of this randomized study and of the potentially confounding effect of pretreatment risk factors, doxycycline-based treatment cannot be justified only on the ground of the current results. Because of the high prevalence of this disorder and its clinical, social, and economic relevance, a multicenter study should be performed to further investigate whether there is any place for medical treatment of small AAAs.  相似文献

Chronic Chlamydophila pneumoniae infection has been suggested as a possible contributing factor for the development and expansion of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The relevance of C pneumoniae involved in the processes underlying aneurysmal rupture is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between C pneumoniae seropositivity and AAA rupture. In a case-control study, 119 patients with AAA and 36 matched controls were prospectively investigated with C pneumoniae serology. Patients with ruptured AAA have similar levels of IgG antibodies against C pneumoniae as patients with an electively operated AAA, a small AAA, and controls. In conclusion, this study fails to demonstrate a connection between C pneumoniae seropositivity and AAA rupture.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Natural killer (NK) cells have an emerging role in the development of chronic disease and in the direction and maintenance of inflammatory responses. Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown aetiology. The aim was to investigate whether NK cells showed altered function in patients with an AAA. METHODS: The presence, phenotype and function of peripheral blood and tissue NK cells from patients with an AAA, peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and healthy age-sex-matched controls were assessed before and after surgery. RESULTS: Patients with an AAA had significantly higher (P < 0.010) percentages of peripheral blood NK cells (mean (95 per cent c.i.) 23.8 (2.6) per cent) than patients with PVD (17.4 (2.9) per cent) and control subjects (16.2 (2.8) per cent). The NK cells from patients with an AAA had increased cytotoxicity on a per cell basis towards both an NK-sensitive target cell line and human aortic smooth muscle cells. Increased NK cell proportions (22.7 (3.5) per cent) and cytotoxic activity, together with higher C-reactive protein values, persisted after successful AAA repair. CONCLUSION: These data support the hypothesis that increased NK cytotoxicity could be a contributing factor in the generation or potentiation of inflammation in patients with an AAA.  相似文献

Background: Although there is evidence demonstrating an association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), it is not clear whether COPD predicts greater rates of expansion of established aneurysms. We sought such an association in a cohort of men with aneurysms detected in a population‐based study of screening for aneurysms. Methods: In addition to regular aortic ultrasound scans, 179 men with AAA underwent full lung function testing in order to identify the presence of COPD and its subgroups, emphysema and other obstructive ventilatory defects (OVD). The rate of expansion of each aneurysm was calculated and the men were divided into ‘rapid expanders’ (3 mm or more per year) and ‘slow expanders’ (less than 3 mm per year). Any association with the presence of COPD or smoking was tested using a multivariate model. Results: Over a median follow‐up period of 36 months the mean rate of aortic expansion for the cohort of 179 men was 2.1 mm/year. There was no significant difference in prevalence of COPD (68% overall) or having ever been a smoker (87% overall) between the rapid expanders and the slow expanders. Conclusions: Although there was a high prevalence of COPD among men with an AAA, there was no association between the rate of expansion of AAA and the presence of any form of this disease.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The common polymorphism of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is associated with differential risk of atherosclerosis; the gene could be a candidate gene in abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). METHODS: APOE genotypes were determined in 57 men aged 65-73 years with a small AAA (30-50 mm). The patients were included in a population ultrasonographic screening programme and were followed with at least two examinations during an interval of 2-4.5 years. The AAA expansion rates in patients with four different APOE genotypes were studied, with adjustment for initial AAA size and smoking. RESULTS: APOE genotype was a significant determinant of AAA expansion rate (P = 0.001). The adjusted mean (95 per cent confidence interval) rate was 2.1 (1.7-2.6) mm/year in 31 men with genotype E3E3, 1.3 (0.7-1.9) mm/year in 17 men with E3E4, 3.1 (2.0-4. 1) mm/year in six men with E2E3 and 4.2 (2.7-5.6) mm/year in three men with E2E4. The mean expansion rate was 2.2 (1.5-2.8) mm/year in non-smokers and 3.0 (2.5-3.6) mm/year in smokers (P = 0.014). CONCLUSION: APOE genotype seems to influence AAA expansion rate, but the effects of the individual genotypes, in particular E3E3 and E3E4, are contradictory when compared with the effects of the genotypes on risk of atherosclerosis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to compare outcomes following ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in men and women. METHODS: Overall mortality from ruptured AAA was compared in men and women using the Western Australia Health Services Research Database. The linked chains of de-identified hospital morbidity and death records were selected using the ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases - Clinical Modification) diagnostic and procedure codes pertaining to AAA. Cases were divided into three groups for analysis: patients who died without admission to hospital, those admitted to hospital with a ruptured AAA but who did not undergo operation, and patients who underwent operation for ruptured AAA. RESULTS: Ruptured AAA occurred in 648 men and 225 women over the age of 55 years during the decade 1985-1994. Only 50 per cent of women, compared with 59 per cent of men, were admitted to hospital. Of those admitted to hospital only 37 per cent of women underwent operation, compared with 63 per cent of men. The overall mortality rate from ruptured AAA was 90 per cent in women and 76 per cent in men (chi2 = 50.34, 1 d.f., P < 0.0001). Although women were, on average, 6 years older than men, this unfavourable pattern occurred across all age groups. CONCLUSION: Women with a ruptured AAA are more likely to die than men. More research is required to identify the causes of this sex difference.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Persistent infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydophila pneumoniae has been implicated in the progression or induction of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Evidence for this hypothesis has been obtained in adults either by serological methods or by direct pathogen detection using invasive procedures. METHODS: We investigated nasal brush specimens and induced sputum from 38 children with stable chronic lung disease (asthma, n = 26; chronic bronchitis n = 12) and from 42 healthy controls for the presence of M pneumoniae or C. pneumoniae DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using nested primers. RESULTS: None of the controls but 23.6% and 10.5% of the children with lung disease had positive PCR for C pneumoniae (p = 0.001) and M pneumoniae (p = 0.044) respectively. Significantly more children with non-atopic asthma than with atopic asthma were positive for C pneumoniae or M pneumoniae (4/8 v 1/18; p = 0.018). There were no unwanted side effects from sputum induction. No correlation was found between detection of Chlamydophila and severity of lung disease. Colonisation with both organisms had occurred before adulthood in a significant proportion of children with stable chronic lung diseases. CONCLUSION: Combining nasal brush specimens with induced sputum may be a useful non-invasive method for studying the role of C pneumoniae and M pneumoniae infection in children with different chronic lung diseases.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Differences between women and men in treatment and outcome after admission with a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in England were studied. METHODS: Routinely collected data in Hospital Episode Statistics, linked to death records, for emergency admissions for ruptured AAA in England were analysed. The percentage of patients who underwent surgical repair was calculated, together with 30-day case fatality rates and age-adjusted odds ratios (ORs), comparing women with men. RESULTS: A total of 2463 women and 7615 men were admitted with a primary diagnosis of ruptured AAA (mean age 79.8 and 74.9 years respectively); 39.6 per cent of women and 66.4 per cent of men underwent surgical repair (OR 0.47 (95 per cent confidence interval 0.42 to 0.52)). Overall, 75.6 per cent of women and 61.7 per cent of men died within 30 days of admission (OR 1.36 (1.22 to 1.52)). The death rate for women and men who had surgery was similar (OR 1.01 (0.88 to 1.17)); when no operation was performed the mortality rate was higher in women, but not significantly so (OR 1.14 (0.91 to 1.42)). CONCLUSION: Women with a ruptured AAA were less likely to be treated surgically than men, and their overall mortality rate was higher. Lower rates of surgery in women than in men may contribute to the higher mortality in women, but other explanations are possible.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Accelerated arteriosclerosis with cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in end-stage renal disease patients. Increased, levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and evidence of chronic Chlamydia pneumoniae infection have been identified as risk factors for cardiovascular disease in the general population. We tested the hypothesis that elevation of CRP, indicating chronic inflammation, and positive serum antibody titres for C. pneumoniae are associated with an increased cardiovascular mortality in patients on chronic peritoneal dialysis. METHODS: We measured CRP and antibodies to C. pneumoniae in 34 patients on peritoneal dialysis. CRP was measured by a sensitive ELISA and C. pneumoniae antibodies by microimmunofluorescence. In addition, risk factors such as lipids, smoking status and hypertension were assessed. Coronary artery disease (CAD) was defined by cardiac stress testing and/or angiography. Patients showing clinical evidence of systemic or peritoneal dialysis-associated infection during the investigation period of 6 months (between 1990 and 1991) were excluded. RESULTS: The incidence of CAD was significantly increased in patients with CRP values >1.5 mg/l (odds ratio 7.0, P<0.022) during 72 months of follow-up. In addition, in patients seropositive for IgA C. pneumoniae antibodies, the incidence of CAD was significantly increased (odds ratio 7.2, P<0.014). These findings resulted in an increased risk of death in patients with mean CRP values >1.5 mg/l at the start of the study (odds ratio 20.0, P<0.001). Furthermore, in patients seropositive for IgA C. pneumoniae antibodies, the risk of death (odds ratio 10.2, P<0.005) was significantly increased. There was a highly significant correlation between CRP and seropositivity for IgA C. pneumoniae antibodies (r=0.445, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Increased circulating CRP and seropositivity for C. pneumoniae in patients on chronic peritoneal dialysis are associated with reduced survival due to cardiovascular complications. CRP and C. pneumoniae antibodies may indicate a chronic inflammatory process as an underlying cause and/or result of arteriosclerosis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in a community-based sample of men and women aged 65-79 years was correlated with known risk factors. In addition, the effect of high blood pressure and the use of antihypertensive medication on growth of AAAs were studied. METHODS: Aortic diameter was assessed by ultrasonography and data on risk factors were collected by self-administered questionnaire for 5356 men and women as part of a randomized controlled trial. RESULTS: Current hypertension increased the risk of having an aortic aneurysm by 30-40 per cent while use of antihypertensive medication increased the risk by 70-80 per cent, adjusting for current blood pressure. There was no clear relationship between hypertension and growth rates of existing aneurysms in this study, although these results were largely from data on small aneurysms. Men were nearly six times more likely to develop an AAA than women; the risk increased by 40 per cent every 5 years after the age of 65 years. Smoking was an independent risk factor for AAA, with level of exposure being more significant than duration. CONCLUSION: Male sex, smoking and hypertension are strong risk factors for the development of AAA. In this study hypertension did not significantly increase the growth rate of existing aneurysms. Smoking remains the most important avoidable risk factor for AAA. The analyses presented here suggest that selection for screening, other than by age and sex, is not worthwhile.  相似文献

Throat and bronchoscopy specimens for mycoplasma isolation studies were collected from 22 patients with chronic bronchitis and 20 patients without chronic bronchitis. Twenty-six of 50 patients attending a chronic bronchitis clinic had throat, nasal, or sputum specimens collected for attempted mycoplasma isolation, and all of these patients had multiple serum samples taken for mycoplasma antibody studies. Mycoplasmas were recovered from throat and bronchoscopy specimens of the chronic bronchitic and non-bronchitic patients with about equal frequency. The concentration of organisms in the bronchoscopy specimens of two patients with chronic bronchitis was greater than in their throat specimens, suggesting downward spread and multiplication of mycoplasmas rather than contamination by passage of the bronchoscope. Eighty-three per cent of the rises in mycoplasma antibody titre in chronic bronchitic patients occurred during or immediately after an acute respiratory illness, and this relationship of rise in antibody titre to acute illness was significantly more frequent than rises in antibody titre not associated with illness. We suggest that mycoplasmas may be present in the bronchi of some patients suffering from chronic bronchitis and that, while such mycoplasma infections are often silent, they may become sufficiently active during infection by other agents to stimulate a mycoplasma antibody response.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: to compare the ability of two independent Chlamydia pneumoniae antibody tests to predict need for small abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. PATIENTS AND METHODS: annual scans were offered to 149 screening diagnosed small AAA (<5 cm). Serum samples were collected for measuring IgA and IgG-antibodies to C. pneumoniae by microimmunofluorescence (MIF) test and the new ELISA (Labsystems). RESULTS: a significant concordance was found between MIF and ELISA titres with Kappa values of 0.29 for S-IgA and 0.42 for S-IgG. IgG antibodies measured by ELISA were most predictive for cases expanding operation recommendable sizes with a sensitivity and specificity of 80% and 66%, respectively. CONCLUSION: the simpler EIA has a high correlation with the MIF test and both were predictive for the natural history of AAA. Chlamydia antibody test may be used to identify individuals who might benefit from follow-up and anti-chlamydia treatment.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Population-based screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is still a subject of debate. This study examined whether subjects with a history of inguinal hernia were at increased risk sufficient to justify screening. METHODS: The prevalence of AAA was documented in 156 men aged 55 years and older, discharged after inguinal hernia surgery, and compared with the prevalence in 1771 men without a history of inguinal hernia who were participating in a screening survey for AAA. The influence of age and smoking status was assessed. RESULTS: The prevalence of AAA in men with a history of inguinal hernia was 12.2 (95 per cent confidence interval (c.i.) 7.0-17.4) per cent and 3.7 (95 per cent c.i. 2.8-4.6) per cent in those without such a history; prevalence ratio 3.3 (95 per cent c.i. 2.0-5.3). In current smokers the prevalence of abdominal aneurysm was 4.2 (95 per cent c.i. 2.1-8.2) times higher in those with compared with those without a history of inguinal hernia. In non-smokers the prevalence ratio was 1.9 (95 per cent c.i. 0.5-7.0). CONCLUSION: Men with a history of inguinal hernia are at increased risk of AAA, most notably if they are cigarette smokers. Ultrasonographic screening could be considered before operation for inguinal hernia.  相似文献

Quantification of mortality risk after abdominal aortic aneurysm repair   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
BACKGROUND: The study was designed to evaluate the Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II risk scoring system in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) surgery. The aim was to create an APACHE-based risk stratification model for postoperative death. METHODS: Prospective postoperative APACHE II data were collected from patients undergoing AAA repair over a 9-year interval from 24 intensive care units (ICUs) in the Thames region. A multilevel logistic regression model (APACHE-AAA) for in-hospital mortality was developed to adjust for both case mix and the variation in outcome between ICUs. RESULTS: A total of 1896 patients were studied. The in-hospital mortality rate among the 1289 patients who had elective AAA repair was 9.6 (95 per cent confidence interval (c.i.) 8.0 to 11.2) per cent and that among the 605 patients who had an emergency repair was 46.9 (95 per cent c.i. 43.0 to 50.9) per cent. Four independent predictors of death were identified: age (odds ratio (OR) 1.05 (95 per cent c.i. 1.03 to 1.07) per year increase), Acute Physiology Score (OR 1.14 (95 per cent c.i. 1.12 to 1.17) per unit increase), emergency operation (OR 4.86 (95 per cent c.i. 3.64 to 6.52)) and chronic health dysfunction (OR 1.43 (95 per cent c.i. 1.04 to 1.97)). The APACHE-AAA model was internally valid, as shown by calibration (Hosmer-Lemeshow C statistic: chi(2) = 6.14, 8 d.f., P = 0.632), discrimination properties (area under receiver-operator characteristic curve 0.845) and subgroup analysis. There was no significant variation in outcome between hospitals. CONCLUSION: APACHE-AAA was shown to be an accurate risk-stratification model that could be used to quantify the risk of death after AAA surgery. It might also be used to determine the relative impact of ICU over high-dependency unit care.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Serological studies have suggested that one of the risk factors for aneurysm development is C. pneumoniae infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether there is an association between the presence of C. pneumoniae DNA in aneurysms and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms. METHODS: Aortic walls were collected consecutively from 30 patients with intact AAA, 16 patients with ruptured AAA and 19 healthy organ donors (control). Purified DNAs from all aortas were analyzed for the presence of C. pneumoniae DNA in parallel by polymerase chain reaction-enzyme immunoassay (PCR-EIA) and agarose gel electrophoresis. PCR-EIA has a high sensitivity in detecting low DNA copy number in clinical atherosclerotic samples. RESULTS: C. pneumoniae DNA was detected more frequently in patients with aneurysms, particular with ruptured aneurysms. The incidence of positive C. pneumoniae DNA was 73.3% in intact AAA and 10.5% in control aortas, with the highest frequency in ruptured AAA (100%) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Giving the high specificity and sensitivity of PCR-EIA, these findings support the association of C. pneumoniae in the pathogenesis of aneurysm development, growth and rupture.  相似文献

Serum antibody titers in urethritis and chronic bacterial prostatitis.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
E M Meares 《Urology》1977,10(4):305-309
Serum antibody titers were measured by direct bacterial agglutination technique against various strains of Escherichia coli found in the fecal flora of a control group of men who had no history of genitourinary tract infection, against the strains of E. coli responsible for urethral infection in 7 men with urethritis, and against the strains of E. coli responsible for prostatic infection in 25 men with chronic prostatitis. Low serum titers were found in both the control group (median titer of 1:20) and in the urethritis group (median titer of 1:10). Excluding 3 men who had self-agglutinating strains, 18 of 22 (82 per cent) in the prostatitis group had serum titers of 1:320 or greater (median titer of 1:640). Measurement of serum antibody titers by this technique can be a valuable adjunct to diagnosis in cases of chronic prostatitis due to strains of E. coli.  相似文献
