Background

Predatory journals exist in nursing and lack the safeguards of traditional publishing practices.

Purpose

To examine the quality of articles published in predatory nursing journals.

Method

Randomly selected articles (n = 358) were reviewed for structural content and eight quality indicators.

Findings

Two-thirds (67.4%) of the articles were published between 2014 and 2016, demonstrating the acceleration of publications in predatory nursing journals. The majority (75.9%) of the articles were research reports. Most followed the IMRAD presentation of a research report but contained errors, or the study was not pertinent to the nursing discipline.

Conclusions

Nursing research published in predatory journals may appear legitimate by conforming to an expected structure. However, a lack of quality is apparent, representing inadequate peer review and editorial processes. Poor quality research erodes the scholarly nursing literature.  相似文献

Background

Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) experience substantial health disparities. Evidence suggests nurses may be unprepared to work with these populations. A previous literature review of top-ranked nursing journals found that 0.16% of published articles addressed SGM health.

Purpose

To evaluate changes in coverage of SGM health in the top-ranked nursing journals since the earlier review using a scoping approach.

Methods

Electronic search of articles published between December 2009 and December 2017 in 20 nursing journals with the highest 5-year impact factors.

Findings

Thirty-three articles (0.19%) in the top-ranked nursing journals focused on SGM health. There is increasing attention to SGM health recently, evidenced by the numbers of empirical and nonempirical research articles published, as well as nonresearch articles about SGM health.

Discussion

In light of well-documented health disparities affecting SGM people, it is essential that nurses continue to conduct and disseminate research related to the health of these populations.  相似文献

AIMS: To analyse the research published in refereed nursing journals by Australian authors from 1995 to 2000. BACKGROUND: Analysis of the research topics and types of methodologies used by Australian nurse researchers has not been recently undertaken. The study was similar to an analysis of United Kingdom (UK) nursing research between 1988 and 1995 to allow comparison between the two countries. DESIGN: A quantitative approach analysed the research abstracts for the topic researched, source of data, location of data collection, paradigm and methodology used and funding source. RESULTS: A total of 509 articles from 11 generalist Australian and UK nursing journals were analysed. The highest numbers of articles were published in Australian Journal of Advanced Nursing and Journal of Advanced Nursing. The most popular topics were education of nurses (18.7%, n=95) and practice issues relating to patient care (15.3%, n=78). However, scant attention was paid to major Australian health issues. Most research was undertaken in the hospital setting (55.8%, n=247). Data were most often drawn from nurses themselves (40.7%, n=206), followed by patients (25.5%, n=129). Both quantitative (41%, n=203) and qualitative approaches (47%, n=230) were employed. A minority of studies acknowledged any funding (14.9%, n=76). CONCLUSIONS: Research findings need to be applied in practice to improve patient care. Nurse researchers need to publish their findings and align their research interests to meet national health priorities. They need to be involved in setting these health priorities to ensure that nursing has a place in health research.  相似文献

Aims

The aim was to examine the extent and scope of empirical research concerning registered nurses' psychological capital.

Background

In a time of global nursing shortage, identifying variables that could positively contribute to the retention of the nursing workforce is essential. Prior research has shown that psychological capital correlates positively with employees' better performance and well-being.

Design

A scoping review.

Data sources

A systematic literature search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Scopus covering the period from 1 January 2005 to 7 May 2023.

Review methods

The JBI methodological guidance for scoping reviews was followed. The results were summarized narratively.

Results

A total of 111 studies reported in 114 peer-reviewed articles were included. Studies were carried out across 20 countries, with the majority from China (45), Australia (nine), Pakistan (nine), Canada (eight), South Korea (eight) and the United States (eight). A positive correlation was found between registered nurses' psychological capital and desirable work-related outcomes, such as work engagement, commitment and retention intention.

Conclusion

A comprehensive overview of research evidence suggests that psychological capital is associated with many positive work-related outcomes and might therefore be a valuable resource for reducing nurse turnover.  相似文献

While the need to develop and conduct research has been prominent in mental health nursing for some time, the current funding climate in tertiary institutions has created even more pressure for research outputs. The Research Assessment Exercise is well ingrained in UK institutions, New Zealand is about to enter the second round of the Performance-based Research Funding model, and Australia is committed to a Research Quality Framework. There is much to learn from nursing departments in those countries that have already been part of the process. This paper will present a content analysis of what mental health nursing research is currently being published in nursing journals and discuss the implications of the research assessment exercises on its future. Those mental health nursing articles sampled in the study revealed a shift beginning towards more consumer-focused research was occurring but that there was a need for more research into the effectiveness of specific mental health nursing interventions. Most of the articles also reported on small-scale research. It concludes that research needs to be more clinically orientated and less profession-orientated. It also suggests a need to focus on larger-scale studies possibly situated within a collaborative research programme. These programmes need to be more collaborative both cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary.  相似文献

Environmental health has received minimal attention in nursing curricula over the past decade, despite efforts by the Institute of Medicine (1995) and others to advance the environmental health agenda in nursing education, practice, and research. This paper describes an initiative that was first funded as a part of the Environmental Health Scholars Program in 2000 to incorporate environmental health into master's and undergraduate nursing programs at one university. Evaluation of this initiative highlights the challenges and successes experienced in this academic setting. A number of recommendations based on this experience and the literature are offered. There is a perceived need to define the critical body of knowledge and skills in environmental health and to develop tools to enable educators and practitioners to apply this knowledge in public health nursing and other specialty practices. In tandem, opportunities and incentives are needed to encourage faculty development and the infusion of environmental health into existing curricula. Changes are also needed across practice settings to proactively address environmental health issues so that environmental health becomes and remains an integral part of nursing.  相似文献

Aim

To discuss the definition of spirituality and its limitations for nursing research. It proposes a definition that will capture more accurately the role of spirituality in health outcomes.

Background

Studies have increasingly examined spirituality in nursing research as a coping mechanism attenuating the negative impact of traumatic stress on mental health. Existing definitions of spirituality in nursing research include elements of positive emotional states (meaning, purpose, general well‐being) which confound mental health outcomes.

Data sources

Medline and CINAHL databases were searched from 2007–2011 for research articles examining spirituality definitions and measures used by nurse researchers.

Discussion

An analysis of the definitions of spirituality in nursing research reveals inconsistencies and confounding mental health concepts. The authors propose defining spirituality in the context of religious involvement when conducting research, while using a broader definition of spirituality when providing spiritual care. They argue such definition provides a more appropriate method of measuring this concept in research aimed at evaluating mental health outcomes while preserving the currently used patient‐defined definition of spirituality when providing spiritual care.

Nursing implications

A consistent definition of spirituality in nursing research evaluating mental health outcomes, distinct from ‘spiritual care’ in a clinical setting, is essential to avoid tautological results that are meaningless. Appropriate definitions will enable nursing researchers to more clearly identify resilience mechanisms and improved health outcomes in those exposed to traumatic stress.

Conclusion

A definition of spirituality that focuses on religious involvement provides a more uniform and consistent measure for evaluating mental health outcomes in nursing research.  相似文献

Aim

To examine how the social determinants of health have been considered in conceptualizations of multimorbidity in older adults in the literature and to identify implications for nursing practice, research and healthcare planning and policy.

Background

The common conceptualization of multimorbidity is the presence of multiple chronic conditions where one is not more central than others.

Design

The integrative review methodology of Whittemore and Knafl was employed. The World Health Organization Social Determinants of Health framework was used to determine how the social determinants of health have been considered in conceptualizations of multimorbidity.

Data sources

A search of electronic databases (2000–2015) generated 22 relevant articles, including quantitative and qualitative studies and grey literature reports.

Review methods

A systematic process was used to appraise the quality of the documents, conduct qualitative data analysis procedures of data extraction, coding and theme development, and synthesize conclusions.

Results

Current conceptualizations of multimorbidity provide limited consideration of the complex interplay of multimorbidity with the broader social determinants of health. Gender, education, behaviours and the health system were the most commonly cited determinants. Ethnicity, socioeconomic status/social class and material circumstances received little attention. Most of the dimensions of socioeconomic political context were not discussed.

Conclusion

The predominant conceptualization of multimorbidity focuses on the biomedical dimensions of multimorbidity. Consequently, nursing practice, research and policy informed by this literature could inadvertently sustain the mismatch between the needs of older adults with multimorbidity and the services they receive. Future research to inform a new conceptualization is necessary.  相似文献

Aim

To systematically review the available evidence from research exploring the image of nurses in the media.

Background

Nurses have historically faced many challenges and have received media attention for such efforts. However, the image of nursing traditionally conveyed by media has failed to represent the real character and a positive image of the nursing profession.

Review methods

For this scoping literature review, a search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Dialnet to identify studies written in English, Spanish or Portuguese from the earliest date in the databases until February 2022. Four authors were involved in a two-stage screening process. Data were subjected to quantitative content analysis. A decade-by-decade analysis was performed to track the evolution of the research.

Results

Sixty studies were included. The analysis shows (1) an increasing interest in analysing the portrayal of nurses and nursing in media over time, especially from 2000 onwards; (2) a prevailing trend of focusing on one form of media when analysing the portrayal of nurses; (3) qualitative designs as the most frequent method for exploring the image of nursing; and (4) a predominantly negative image conveyed by media.

Conclusions

There is a notable body of scientific evidence about the image of nurses and nursing portrayed in media. The interest in analysing media depictions of nursing has a long history. The included studies’ samples showed heterogeneity, as they were obtained from different media, periods and countries.

Implications for nursing

This scoping review is the first systematic review to provide a comprehensive map of what has been studied thus far regarding media depictions of nursing. It confirms the imperative need for nurses in different settings (academic, assistance or management fields) to maintain a proactive attitude towards addressing images of nursing and ensuring accurate representations.  相似文献

Background

In 2000, the United Nations (UN) introduced the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), described as a global movement with the primary aim of ending world-wide poverty (“Millennium Summit,” 2000). The second phase of the project, known as the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) agenda offers an increased emphasis on lessening the mitigating factors associated with climate change and adapting to the negative effects of climate change. Nurses are in the unique position to address the health-related impacts related to climate change through community health approaches aimed at education and promotion of environmental stewardship.

Purpose

The purpose of this scoping review was to examine the relationships among the health consequences of climate change, nursing literature on climate change, and nursing implications. The following will be addressed: “What is nursing's role in policy, practice, and advocacy when addressing the effects of climate change? What is the importance of the SDGs as a framework for addressing climate change in the role of nursing?”

Method

This scoping review of the literature was conducted which included the evaluation of a broad range of articles using scoping methods as frameworks.

Findings

An overarching theme regarding the nursing community's responsibility in addressing the effects of climate change and their role as advocates, educators, and global citizens was extracted from the scoping review.

Discussion

There are many opportunities for nurses to become actively involved in efforts aimed at mitigation, adaptation, and resilience efforts in climate change, including becoming involved in policy, advocacy, research, and practice opportunities.  相似文献

Background

In 1962, Methods of Information in Medicine (MIM) began to publish papers on the methodology and scientific fundamentals of managing data, information, and knowledge in biomedicine and health care. Meeting an increasing demand for research about practical implementation of health information systems, the journal Applied Clinical Informatics (ACI) was launched in 2009. Both journals are official journals of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA).

Objectives

Based on prior analyses, we aimed to describe major topics published in MIM during 2014 and to explore whether theory of MIM influenced practice of ACI. Our objectives were further to describe lessons learned and to discuss possible editorial policies to improve bridging from theory to practice.

Methods

We conducted a retrospective, observational study reviewing MIM articles published during 2014 (N=61) and analyzing reference lists of ACI articles from 2014 (N=70). Lessons learned and opinions about MIM editorial policies were developed in consensus by the two authors. These have been influenced by discussions with the journal’s associate editors and editorial board members.

Results

The publication topics of MIM in 2014 were broad, covering biomedical and health informatics, medical biometry and epidemiology. Important topics discussed were biosignal interpretation, boosting methodologies, citation analysis, health-enabling and ambient assistive technologies, health record banking, safety, and standards. Nine ACI practice articles from 2014 cited eighteen MIM theory papers from any year. These nine ACI articles covered mainly the areas of clinical documentation and medication-related decision support. The methodological basis they cited from was almost exclusively related to evaluation. We could show some direct links where theory impacted practice. These links are however few in relation to the total amount of papers published.

Conclusions

Editorial policies such as publishing systematic methodological reviews and clarification of possible practical impact of theory-focused articles may improve bridging.  相似文献

BackgroundMental health and psychosocial concerns such as domestic violence in pregnancy and after birth are significant issues. Maternal health, social and environmental contexts have a direct influence on child development and long-term health. However, midwives, nurses and other health professionals lack confidence and skills in assessing, supporting and referring women with perinatal psychosocial concerns.Aim and objectivesThe aim of the scoping review is to review educational innovations and teaching strategies used to build skills and knowledge in health professionals and students to address psychosocial concerns including perinatal mental health, domestic violence and drug and alcohol misuse.DesignA scoping review was undertaken to help identify the breadth of papers reporting educational innovations and strategies particularly to address psychosocial concerns.MethodFour databases CINAHL, PsychoInfo, PubMed, OvidMedline and the grey literature were searched using a diverse range of terms for papers published in English between January 2009 and December 2020. This yielded 2509 papers and after review, 34 papers were included in the scoping review.ResultsThe 34 papers in this review found a diversity of educational initiatives and strategies delivered either face-to-face, online or in a blended mode addressing the learning needs of health professionals working with women with complex psychosocial concerns. The following characteristics in the papers were examined; focus of education, design and development, length, target audience including interprofessional focus, self-care, sensitive topics, debriefing, involving lived experience consumers and evaluation measures.ParticipantsIn the studies indicated that they benefited from hearing about the individuals’ lived experiences, opportunities for simulated practice and valued interprofessional learning experiences for both content and teamwork. The emergence of virtual modes offered some innovative and engaging ways to create a safe space for psychosocial education. However, the research does not provide guidance as to the best mode of delivery or length of programConclusionThis scoping review provides a broad overview of innovative and diverse educational methods and strategies being used in the nursing, midwifery and health disciplines to engage students and practitioners in learning in the areas of perinatal mental health and psychosocial care. Involvement of lived experience consumers in the design and delivery of education programs can positively impact learners’ knowledge and understandings of sensitive psychosocial topics. Embedding nursing informatics into the undergraduate nursing curriculum enhances nursing students’ digital health literacy, whilst preparing them to use health information systems and technological innovations to support their learning both at university and in the clinical environment.AimThis scoping review aimed to provide an overview of the published literature on how nursing informatics was embedded and integrated into the undergraduate nursing curriculum in Australia before coronavirus disease (COVID-19).MethodologyA scoping review approach guided this study using the Levac, Colquhoun, and O'Brien framework, and the following databases were searched: CINAHL Plus, EMCARE, MEDLINE Ovid, Scopus, ERIC ProQuest, and Web of Science. A total of 26 articles were included: Five quantitative studies, eight qualitative studies and 13 mixed-methods studies.FindingsFew studies focused on the concept of nursing informatics itself, and only two studies described the process of developing curricula that contain nursing informatics competencies and their implementation: the educational scaffolding and modular development approach and a Community of Inquiry Framework (COI). Most studies centred on nursing informatics tools to facilitate teaching and learning in classrooms and skills laboratories. The reported pedagogical strategies were online learning, blended learning, and technology-enabled simulations. Hindrances to nursing informatics being integrated into undergraduate curricula were disparities of the informatics content, a lack of guidelines and/or frameworks, and poor digital literacy.ConclusionThis study provided a baseline perspective of how nursing informatics was embedded and integrated into nursing education in Australia before COVID-19. Overwhelmingly, the focus of research to date was found to be mainly on the utilisation of technological tools to support learning and teaching.  相似文献

This is the third of four articles on the scoping study of the Australian mental health nursing workforce conducted on behalf of the Australian and New Zealand College of Mental Health Nurses (ANZCMHN) for the Australian Health Ministers Advisory Council (AHMAC) National Working Group on Mental Health (NWGMH). Its purpose is to focus on factors that significantly affect mental health nursing practice. The purpose of this study was to assess the quality of quantitative psychiatric/mental health nursing research articles published in English between 1982 and 1992, worldwide. Criteria for selection of articles included nurse authorship or co-authorship, use of a quantitative design and pertinence to an aspect of the nursing process with psychiatric/mental health patients. One hundred and ninety-four articles met these criteria. The quality of each article was assessed by two nurse experts using Duffy's Research Appraisal Checklist (RAC). Forty-six point nine per cent of the articles were rated as superior, 50% as average and 3.1% as below average. Other findings identified journals that published research articles, countries in which research was completed, applicability of funding and qualifications of the authors. The major implications of this study are that nurses can be directed to superior articles; more publication of research by nurse authors is warranted, research is being completed with little financial support, highly rated research publications tend to get funding and editorial policies affect the quality of publication.  相似文献

Background

There is a significantly higher number of people experiencing severe levels of suicidal thoughts compared to that of suicidal deaths and suicide attempts. In suicide prevention research, there is a shift towards greater emphasis on people's experiences of living with suicidal thoughts. This can expand the existing evidence base, which is dominated by a biomedical approach. The aim of this review was to summarise and disseminate existing research on the lived experiences of living with suicidal thoughts.

Methods

A scoping review by Arksey & O'Malley consisting of six stages: (1) formulating the research question, (2) identifying relevant studies, (3) selecting studies, (4) mapping data, (5) summarising the results and (6) consulting stakeholders. PubMed, PsycINFO and CINAHL were searched for studies in English, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. Peer-reviewed articles examining people's experiences of living with suicidal thoughts using qualitative methods were included. The search was supplemented with a citation pearl search in the Web of Science database. Twenty-eight studies were included.

Results

The findings were organised under two thematic headings: (a) the significance of social connections and (b) a loss of the personal self.

Conclusion

There is a need for further qualitative research of people's experiences of living with suicidal thoughts from an everyday life perspective. Awareness about social connections and attachment in mental health prevention and governance is crucial. Trauma-informed care could be a useful approach to prevent suicidal thoughts as the review found that many participants had traumatic experiences in both childhood and adulthood. As part of the treatment of suicidal thoughts, it might be useful to have a focus on narrative and communicative methods and their clinical application.  相似文献
