BACKGROUND: The evolution of trauma may be analyzed by review of articles most frequently cited by scientific articles worldwide. This study identified the "trauma classics" by reviewing the most-cited articles ever published in The Journal of Trauma. METHODS: The Science Citation Index of the Institute for Scientific Information was searched for the 50 most-cited articles in The Journal of Trauma. RESULTS: Of the 12,672 articles published since 1961, 80 were cited over 100 times and 17 over 200 times. The most-cited article was by Baker, a hallmark publication on injury scoring published in 1974. Feeding postinjury, bacterial translocation, and multiple organ failure were common themes. Overall, 32% involved gastrointestinal topics and 18% involved injury scoring, with institutions in the United States publishing 80% of the articles. CONCLUSION: This study identified the trauma classics from the last 42 years of The Journal of Trauma. Citation analysis has recognized limitations but gives a fascinating insight into the evolution of trauma care.  相似文献

BackgroundThe Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics and Trauma (JCOT) is one of the top three orthopaedic journals from India. We set out to analyse the top 50 cited articles from JCOT since indexing in PubMed and Scopus.MethodsWe looked into the bibliometrics of the top 50 cited articles and compared citations from PubMed and Scopus, and depicted outputs from VOS viewer analysis on co-authorship and keywords.ResultsTotal citations for top-cited articles were 1076 in numbers, with a maximum of 103.2016 and 2018 were the most productive years. The major contribution was from India with 74%, followed by the USA. New Delhi published maximally at 72%. Clinical topics and narrative reviews were the most common types of studies. Trauma and Adult reconstruction was the most common sub-specialities, and Level 4 was the most frequent level of study. The basic science and COVID-19 related articles received the maximum citations. The authors from Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals published the maximum number of top-50 cited articles in the JCOT.ConclusionsThere is a steady increase in the number of publications in the JCOT, with an increasing number of citation counts. Both the Indian and foreign authors have been publishing in this journal at a comparative rate. Although the citation counts in Scopus are more than those in PubMed for given articles, more than 80% of articles are listed in both databases as top 50 cited articles. The majority of top-cited articles belonged to trauma and adult reconstruction, level III studies, and narrative reviews.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo perform a bibliometric analysis of research on articular cartilage repair published in Chinese and English over the past decade. Fundamental and clinical research topics of high interest were further comparatively analyzed.MethodsRelevant studies published from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2018 (10 years) were retrieved from the Wanfang database (Chinese articles) and six databases, including MEDLINE, WOS, INSPEC, SCIELO, KJD, and RSCI on the website “Web of Science” (English articles), using key words: “articular cartilage” AND “injury” AND “repair”. The articles were categorized according to research focuses for a comparative analysis between those published in Chinese vs English, and further grouped according to publication date (before and after 2014). A comparative analysis was performed on research focus to characterize the variation in research trends between two 5‐year time spans. Moreover, articles were classified as basic and clinical research studies.ResultsOverall, 5762 articles were retrieved, including 2748 in domestic Chinese journals and 3014 in international English journals. A total of 4937 articles focused on the top 10 research topics, with the top 3 being stem cells (32.1%), tissue‐engineered scaffold (22.8%), and molecular mechanisms (16.4%). Differences between the numbers of Chinese and English papers were observed for 3 topics: chondrocyte implantation (104 vs 316), osteochondral allograft (27 vs 86), and microfracture (127 vs 293). The following topics gained more research interest in the second 5‐year time span compared with the first: microfracture, osteochondral allograft, osteochondral autograft, stem cells, and tissue‐engineered scaffold. Articles with a focus on three‐dimensional‐printing technology have shown the fastest increase in publication numbers. Among 5613 research articles, basic research studies accounted for the majority (4429), with clinical studies described in only 1184 articles. The top 7 research topics of clinical studies were: chondrocyte implantation (28.7%), stem cells (21.9%), microfracture (19.2%), tissue scaffold (10.6%), osteochondral autograft (10.5%), osteochondral allograft (6.3%), and periosteal transplantation (2.8%).ConclusionStudies focused on stem cells and tissue‐engineered scaffolds led the field of damaged articular cartilage repair. International researchers studied allograft‐related implantation approaches more often than Chinese researchers. Traditional surgical techniques, such as microfracture and osteochondral transplantation, gained high research interest over the past decade.  相似文献

A comprehensive compilation of the current international literature on paediatric anaesthesia is still lacking. It was the aim of this study to identify all publications with a focus on paediatric anaesthesia, and to determine the spectrum of topics, as well as the publication type and language for the period between 1993 and 1998. All articles published in 12 major anaesthesia journals were evaluated and, additionally, a computerized, Internet-based Medline-search was performed using selected keywords. The analysis was limited to original articles, case reports, reviews and editorials. For the period between 1993 and 1998, a total of 2259 (377 per year) publications on paediatric anaesthesia were identified in 295 different journals, the majority of which were on the topic of 'providing anaesthesia' in children (n=1424, 63.0%). In contrast, publications on, for example, 'postanaesthesia care' (6. 3%), and 'organizational aspects of paediatric anaesthesia' (2.2%) were rare. Most articles were written in English (85.1%), and more than 50% reported original data (57.1%). Our results suggest that several topics may be of interest for future research and communication in the field of paediatric anaesthesia and new results should be published in English to reach a large international readership.  相似文献

BackgroundWith nearly 50 years’ of development, Injury has become one of the leading journals in its specialty. The aim of this article is to identify, analyze the characteristics of the 100 most cited articles published by the journal to date.MethodWe searched the Thomson Reuters Web of Science Core Collection for citations of all articles published in Injury since its launch. For the Top 100 most frequently cited articles, title, author name, number of authors, publishing date, citation number, country of origin, institution, pages, number of reference, type of article, study topic, study design, funding source, and level of evidence of each clinical article were recorded and analyzed.ResultsOnly 50 self-citations were found in 12436 total citations of the top100 articles, fifty-four articles exceeded 100 citations. Total citations of the Top 100 articles ranged from 77 to 599. The Top 100 articles were published between 1973 and 2012, the mean authorship and institution number per paper was 3.92 and 1.84 respectively. The mean page number was 8.26 and the mean reference number was 45.2. England, Germany and Switzerland ranked the top three countries of origin. Among the T100 articles, there were 50 clinical studies, 5 basic researches, and 45 reviews. The most common study type was case series, and most common topics were bone reconstruction, trauma and bone fracture. The most common level of evidence was level Ⅳ.ConclusionsThis study may help researchers to find out the important information on the classic articles and provides useful insights for the authors who want to publish their research in Injury.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To review the diagnostic strategy of management of multiple trauma patient during the first hours. DATA SOURCES: Extraction from Pubmed database of French and English articles on the management of multiple trauma patient published for ten years. DATA SELECTION: The collected articles were reviewed and selected according to their quality and originality. The more recent data were selected. DATA SYNTHESIS: The first hours of management of multiple trauma patients are a particular challenge. The first dilemma is to drive the patient toward an adequate structure. In case of poor haemodynamic tolerance, the patient will be drive in the nearest hospital. When haemodynamic parameters are restored, multiple trauma patient has to be receive in a high level hospital by a trained medical team with an anesthesiologist, intensivist, neurosurgeon, general surgeon and radiologist. The initial assessment may have two priorities: quality and speed. The total body CT scan is actually the answer to these priorities.  相似文献

BACKGROUNDThere is little research investigating how human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) affects outcomes in orthopaedic surgery. With advances in treatment, HIV has become a chronic health problem and the chance of orthopaedic surgeons encountering it in clinical practice is increasing.AIMTo ascertain the quantity and quality of peer-reviewed publications in orthopaedic journals about HIV.METHODSA search of the Web of Science database was carried out, identifying any articles relating to HIV published in orthopaedic journals. These were assessed for geographic origin and level of evidence. RESULTSOf 48.7% of orthopaedic journals listed on the Web of Science database had published articles relating to HIV. There were 168 articles about HIV in orthopaedic journals with only 40.5% (n = 68) published in the time frame we analysed (January 2007 to September 2017). Very few articles came from low-income countries and any articles published from that setting were collaborations. All of the articles were low level of evidence. CONCLUSIONThere is a need for more high level orthopaedic and trauma research investigating the effects of HIV, particularly research from low-income countries, where higher level research will help to guide improvements in their treatment of its musculoskeletal manifestations and complications.  相似文献

IntroductionThe aim of this study is to analyse the most cited articles in rotator cuff surgery and identify trends in topics by decade to see which areas may still need further investigationMethodsJournal Citation Index was searched to find articles using the search terms pertaining to “rotator cuff repair”. All articles were ranked according to most cited, and then further analysed to find most cited articles in each decade. Articles were grouped into topics to find themes for each decade.ResultsAll the most cited articles were published in 6 orthopaedic journals. Only 4 of the top 30 citations provided level I evidence. Each decade’s most cited articles seemed to fit into a broad topic, with platelet-rich plasma and biologic augmentation being prominent in the last decade.ConclusionThere are still many unanswered questions in rotator cuff surgery, but this may be because success of certain treatment options are highly dependent on patient selection. Despite growing numbers of articles being published on rotator cuff repairs, the level of evidence remains low. Larger, collaborative projects may help in answering the common dilemmas that still face shoulder surgeons.  相似文献

ObjectiveWomen and minorities remain under-represented in academic vascular surgery. This under-representation persists in the editorial peer review process which may contribute to publication bias. In 2020, the Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS) addressed this by diversifying the editorial board and creating a new Editor of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). The impact of a DEI editor on modifying the output of JVS has not yet been examined. We sought to determine the measurable impact of a DEI editor on diversifying perspectives represented in the journal, and on contributing to changes in the presence of DEI subject matter across published journal content.MethodsThe authorship and content of published primary research articles, editorials, and special articles in JVS were examined from November 2019 through July 2022. Publications were examined for the year prior to initiation of the DEI Editor (pre), the year following (post), and from September 2021 to July 2022, accounting for the average 47-week time period from submission to publication in JVS (lag). Presence of DEI topics and women authorship were compared using χ2 tests.ResultsDuring the period examined, the number of editorials, guidelines, and other special articles dedicated to DEI topics in the vascular surgery workforce or patient population increased from 0 in the year prior to 4 (16.7%) in the 11-month lag period. The number of editorials, guidelines, and other special articles with women as first or senior authors nearly doubled (24% pre, 44.4% lag; P = .31). Invited commentaries and discussions were increasingly written by women as the study period progressed (18.7% pre, 25.9% post, 42.6% lag; P = .007). The number of primary research articles dedicated to DEI topics increased (5.6% pre, 3.3% post, 8.1% lag; P = .007). Primary research articles written on DEI topics were more likely to have women first or senior authors than non-DEI specific primary research articles (68.0% of all DEI vs 37.5% of a random sampling of non-DEI primary research articles; P < .001). The proportion of distinguished peer reviewers increased (from 2.8% in 2020 to 21.9% in 2021; P < .001).ConclusionsThe addition of a DEI editor to JVS significantly impacted the diversification of topics, authorship of editorials, special articles, and invited commentaries, as well as peer review participation. Ongoing efforts are needed to diversify subject matter and perspective in the vascular surgery literature and decrease publication bias.  相似文献

Sir Victor Horsley is well recognized as the father of neurological surgery, publishing many articles within this discipline and on other neurologically related topics. Furthermore, he published many important articles in other areas of science and medicine, as well as on social issues (e.g., women's suffrage). Accordingly, we compiled, for the first time, a complete listing of his writings. We briefly describe here some of the characteristics of his bibliography, which is available on the Journal's web site.  相似文献

The number of times an article is cited in scientific journals reflects its impact on a specific biomedical field or specialty and reflects the impact of the authors’ creativity. Our objective was to identify and analyze the characteristics of the 100 most frequently cited articles published in journals dedicated to general surgery and its close subspecialties. Using the database (1945–1995) of the Science Citation Index of the Institute for Scientific Information, 1500 articles cited 100 times and more were identified and the top 100 articles selected for further analysis. The 100 articles were published between 1931 and 1990, with more than two-thirds of them published after 1960. The mean number of citations per article was 405, (range 278–1013). Altogether, 84 of the articles originated from North America (USA 78, Canada 6) and the UK (12). New York State led the list of U.S. states with 14, and Harvard and Columbia University led the list of institutions with 6 articles each. The 100 articles were published in 10 surgical journals led by theAnnals of Surgery (n = 40), followed bySurgery (n = 15), Archives of Surgery (n = 12), Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics (n = 11), and British Journal of Surgery (n = 10). A total of 80 of the articles reported clinical experiences, 6 were clinical review articles, and 14 dealt with basic science. Eighteen articles reported a new surgical technique and six a prosthetic device. Gastrointestinal surgery and trauma and critical care led the list of the surgical fields, each with 25 articles, followed by vascular surgery (n = 15). Thirty-four persons authored two or more of the top-cited articles. This list of the top-cited papers identifies seminal contributions and their originators, facilitating the understanding and discourse of modern surgical history and offering surgeons hints about what makes a contribution a "top-cited classic." To produce such a "classic" the surgeon and his or her group must come up with a clinical or nonclinical innovation, observation, or discovery that has a long-standing effect on the way we practice—be it operative or nonoperative. Based on our findings, to be well cited such a contribution should be published in the English language in a high-impact journal. Moreover, it is more likely to resonant loudly if it originates from a North American or British "ivory tower."  相似文献

The number of citations an article receives after its publication reflects its recognition in the scientific community. In the present study, therefore, we identified and examined the characteristics of the top 100 most frequently cited articles published in anesthetic journals. These articles were identified using the database of the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED, 1945 to present) and the Web of SCIENCE(R). The most-cited article received 707 citations and the least cited article received 197 citations, with a mean of 283 citations per article. These citation classics were published between 1954 and 1997 in 5 high-impact anesthetic journals, led by Anesthesiology (73 articles) followed by Anesthesia & Analgesia (10), British Journal of Anesthesia (10), Anesthesia (6), and Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica (2). Seventy-eight articles were original publications, 22 were review articles, and one was an editorial. They originated from nine countries, with the United States contributing 70 articles. Within the United States, California leads the list of citation classics with 25 articles. Twenty-nine persons authored two or more of the top-cited articles. The main topics covered by the top-cited articles are pharmacology, volatile anesthetics, circulation, regional anesthesia, and lung physiology. This analysis of citation rates allows for the recognition of seminal advances in anesthesia and gives a historic perspective on the scientific progress of this specialty. IMPLICATIONS: We performed a citation analysis to identify important contributions and contributors to the anesthetic literature. These classic articles have influenced many people and have brought to our attention the many important advances in anesthesia made during the last 50 yr.  相似文献

ObjectivesRegistries are integral to monitoring, surveying, treating, preventing and prognosticating trauma. The quantity and quality of data must justify a change or intervention in treatment and/or preventive strategies and must be collected while balancing the cost and time invested in the registry. This review documents the quality, completeness and operational and funding models for ocular trauma registries worldwide.MethodsThe databases CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Informit Health Collection were searched using key word and mesh terms for: “Eye injury, “Ocular trauma”, “Eye injury prevention”, “Eye protection”, “Registry”. To find relevant unpublished articles and theses, clinicaltrials.gov, Trip, MedNar and Google Scholar were searched using the key words “eye injury” OR “ocular trauma” AND “registry*”. No date or language restrictions were applied. The quality of registry data was assessed against published measures including design, operation and data quality.ResultsThe electronic search retrieved 528 distinct published articles; 61 articles were assessed for eligibility. Of the 61 articles identified, 28 were eligible to be included in the review, with cross-referencing identifying a further 7 articles. The source of most articles on ocular trauma registries was the United States, followed by Germany and China. Patient follow-up was conducted in 31 studies, with 6 months being the most frequently reported period. Issues with data quality included incomplete data such as presence or absence of eye protection and initial visual acuity. Attrition bias was controlled by the United States Eye Injury Register with follow-up. Patients without follow-up data were removed for some studies and this may have introduced bias.ConclusionNational, state and hospital-based ocular trauma registries have contributed significantly to our understanding of ocular trauma. The United States has the most frequently cited and well-resourced ocular trauma registries. It is anticipated that this review will guide the development of future registries for ocular trauma in order to inform evidence-based prevention strategies and, ultimately, improve visual outcomes. We recommend the development of a consensus guidelines for international ocular trauma registry that includes mechanism and context of injury and visual outcomes, to permit international comparison that can be implemented at low cost with secure data capture.  相似文献

The following commentary provides a discussion of the articles published in Technology and Innovation in 2010 and where possible places them into context with those reported in Cell Transplantation. These articles can be divided into the following topics: a) models for innovation and technological commercialization, b) the ethical and legal consequences of the emergence of new technologies, c) research on novel technologies and methods, and d) the difficulties involved in peer review and scientific assessment. The articles shed light on the effects of technological innovation and commercialization on scientific ethical regulation, the establishment of legal standards for the protection of intellectual property, and the development of financial models.  相似文献

BackgroundDespite decades-long involvement of trauma survivors in hospital-based program delivery, their roles and impact on trauma care have not been previously described. We aimed to characterize the literature on trauma survivor involvement in hospital-based injury prevention, violence intervention and peer support programs to map what is currently known and identify future research opportunities.MethodsA scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology. Articles were identified through electronic databases and gray literature. Included articles described hospital-based injury prevention programs, violence intervention programs and peer support programs that involved trauma survivors leveraging their injury experiences to counsel others. Studies were screened and data were abstracted in duplicate. Data were synthesized generally and by program type.ResultsThirty-six published articles and four program reports were included. Peer support programs were described in 21 articles, mainly involving trauma survivors as mentors or peer supporters. Peer support programs’ most commonly reported outcome was participant satisfaction (n = 6), followed by participant self-efficacy (n = 5), depression (n = 4), and community integration (n = 3). Eleven injury prevention studies were included, all involving trauma survivors as speakers in youth targeted programs. Injury prevention studies commonly reported outcomes of participants’ risk behaviors and awareness (n = 9). Violence intervention programs were included in four articles involving trauma survivors as intervention counsellors. Recidivism rate was the most commonly reported outcome (n = 3). Variability exists across and within program types when reporting on involved trauma survivors’ gender, age, selection and training, duration of involvement and number of survivors involved. Outcomes related to trauma survivors’ own experiences and the impacts to them of program involvement were under-studied.ConclusionsSignificant opportunity exists to fill current knowledge gaps in trauma survivors’ involvement in trauma program delivery. There is a need to describe more fully who involved trauma survivors are to inform the development of effective future interventions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The establishment of trauma systems was anticipated to improve overall survival for the severely injured patient. We systematically reviewed the published literature to assess if outcome from severe traumatic injury is improved for patients following the establishment of a trauma system. METHODS: A systematic literature review of all population-based studies that evaluated trauma system performance was conducted. A qualitative analysis of each study's design and methodology and a meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the evidence to date of trauma system effectiveness. RESULTS: A search of the literature yielded 14 published articles. Trauma systems demonstrated improved odds of survival in 8 of the 14 reports. The overall quality-weighted odds ratio was 0.85 lower mortality following trauma system implementation. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the meta-analysis showed a 15% reduction in mortality in favor of the presence of a trauma system. Evaluation of trauma system effectiveness must remain an uncompromising commitment to optimal outcome for the injured patient.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to review the literature regarding the rupture of hydatid cysts into the abdominal cavity after trauma. We present both a new case of hydatid cyst rupture that occurred after blunt abdominal trauma and a literature review of studies published in the English language about hydatid cyst rupture after trauma; studies were accessed from PubMed, Google Scholar, EBSCO, EMBASE, and MEDLINE databases. We identified 22 articles published between 2000 and 2011 about hydatid cyst rupture after trauma. Of these, 5 articles were excluded because of insufficient data, duplication, or absence of intra-abdominal dissemination. The other 17 studies included 68 patients (38 males and 30 females) aged 8 to 76 years who had a ruptured hydatid cyst detected after trauma. The most common trauma included traffic accidents and falls. Despite optimal surgical and antihelmintic therapy, 7 patients developed recurrence. Complications included biliary fistula in 5 patients, incisional hernia in 2 patients, and gastrocutaneous fistula in 1 patient. Death occurred from intraoperative anaphylactic shock in 1 patient and gastrointestinal bleeding and pulmonary failure in 1 patient. Rupture of a hydatid cyst into the peritoneal cavity is rare and challenging for the surgeon. This condition is included in the differential diagnosis of the acute abdomen in endemic areas, especially in young patients.  相似文献

Background

We identified and analyzed the characteristics of the 100 most frequently cited articles published between 1965 and 2007 in journals pertaining to urology and related fields.

Methods

We selected 69 of the highest impact urology and sub-specialty journals and 22 of the highest impact general medical and medical research journals from the 2006 edition of Journal Citation Reports: Science edition. We identified the 100 most frequently cited urological articles published in these 91 journals using the Science Citation Index Expanded (1965–present). We reviewed and analyzed the articles.

Results

The top 100 articles were cited a mean of 629 times (range 418–1435) and published between 1965 and 2003, with 89% published after 1979 and 54% published in the 1990s. Fifteen journals were represented, led by The New England Journal of Medicine (30), The Journal of Urology (22) and Lancet (11). Ninety publications originated from North America (81) or the United Kingdom (9). Johns Hopkins University (13), Harvard University (5), Stanford University (5) and University of California, Los Angeles (5) published the most articles. Five urologists were first authors of 2 or more of the articles. Fifty-six articles reported observational studies. Oncology (51) and transplantation (20) were the most commonly represented urological subfields.

Conclusion

These top-cited articles in urology identify topics and authors that contributed to major advances in urology. Observational studies and randomized controlled trials in oncology published in high-impact urological or medical journals constitute the most common type of highly cited publications.  相似文献
