Allergic contact dermatitis from stomadhesive paste

A woman developed dermatitis from Stomadhesive paste used to secure her colostomy appliance. Patch testing revealed that she was allergic to Gantrez (N-butylmonoester of polymethyl vinyl ether maleic acid in an ethanol solution), a water soluble copolymer with stabilizing properties used in the production of Stomadhesive.     

Allergic contact dermatitis in children

INTRODUCTION: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is equally as likely in infancy as in adulthood, and represents 20% of all cases of dermatitis in children. Its true prevalence and incidence are, however, unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have conducted a retrospective study over 10 years of a group of patients aged 15 years or less, with clinical suspicion of ACD. Patch tests were performed in accordance with the standards of the GEIDC. RESULTS: The study covered 96 patients with a mean age of 10.57+/-0.67 years. The zones most frequently affected by eczemas were those of diffuse distribution (28% of patients) and of the hands (27%). We found at least one positive response in 52% of the cases. The most frequent allergens were thiomersal (21%), mercury (19%) and nickel (18%). Allergic contact dermatitis from an organic di-isocyanate

Organic di-isocyanates are used widely in industry. The concomitant respiratory complications are well-known. Cutaneous problems precipitated by skin contact with these chemicals are less well recognised. Allergic contact dermatitis caused by exposure to di-cyclohexytmethane 4,4'-di-isocyanate has been demonstrated in a factory where it was used to form a surface-coating polyurethane. Attention to hygiene methods may have reduced the incidence of cases.     

Allergic contact dermatitis to tulips: An example of enantiospecificity

Summary Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), an immunological reaction of the skin resulting from contact with reactive compounds occurring in plants was shown to the enantiospecific (animals sensitized to a compound do not react to its nonsuperimposable mirror image). Thus, when guinea pigs were experimentally sensitized to (+)-tulipalin B (a compound present in tulip bulbs) they did not react to its enantiomer, (-)-tulipalin B. This was also true for (+)- and (-)--hydroxy--methyl--methylene--butyrolactones.     

Allergic contact dermatitis from cardamom

A case is presented of a confectioner with a chronic hand dermatitis and positive patch test reactions to cardamom and certain terpenoid compounds present in the dried ripe seeds of cardamom. Cardamom is a popular traditional flavouring agent for baked goods and confectionery. Dermatitis from skin exposure to cardamom has to the best of our knowledge not been reported. We report one case of allergic contact dermatitis to cardamom elicited by terpenes present in the seeds.     

Allergic contact dermatitis from epoxy resin in nasal canulae

Allergic contact dermatitis from not fully cured epoxy resin in nasal canulae is reported. Patch testing and chemical analysis utilising the actual batch are stressed.
