From 2004 to 2009, the digestive tracts of 111 dogs from suburban areas around Tirana, Albania, were examined for intestinal helminths. In addition, rectal faecal samples of all dogs were examined for protozoan infections and 48 faecal samples from dogs >6 months of age were processed with the Baermann technique to test for the excretion of lungworm larvae. The heart and pulmonary arteries of 30 dogs >6 months of age also were examined for nematode parasites. The intestinal parasite fauna of the dogs included three protozoan species (Cystoisospora canis, Cystoisospora ohioensis/burrowsi, Sarcocystis spp.), three cestode species (Dipylidium caninum, Taenia hydatigena, Echinococcus granulosus), five nematode species (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Trichuris vulpis) and one acanthocephalan (Centrorhynchus buteonis). Rates of infection were: 15.3% for C. canis, 31.5% for C. ohioensis/burrowsi, 1.8% for Sarcocystis spp., 65.8% for D. caninum, 16.2% for T. hydatigena, 2.7% for E. granulosus (genotype G1), 13.5% for A. caninum, 64.9% for U. stenocephala, 75.7% for T. canis, 0.9% for T. leonina, 21.6% for T. vulpis and 0.9% for C. buteonis. Up to six species of gastrointestinal parasites were found per dog. The 63 ≤6-month-old dogs harboured significantly (p < 0.001) fewer gastrointestinal parasite species concurrently (mean 2.65 ± 1.25 species per animal) than the 48 older animals (mean 3.77 ± 1.45 species per animal). Dogs >6 months of age harboured significantly (p < 0.05) more D. caninum, T. hydatigena, A. caninum, U. stenocephala and T. vulpis compared to younger dogs. Conversely, the younger dogs harboured significantly (p < 0.001) more T. canis than the older ones. There was no difference in the male and female dogs’ counts of individual intestinal helminth species apart from T. hydatigena in dogs >6 months of age: Male dogs harboured significantly (p < 0.05) more tapeworms than female dogs. Based on faecal examination, there was no indication for lungworm infection; however, two adult heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis) were found in the right ventricle of one dog.  相似文献

During 2008 to 2011, faecal samples, ear swabs, and ectoparasites obtained by full body search and total body comb were collected from 252 cats originating from the greater Tirana area. Faecal samples were examined using the McMaster and Baermann techniques, and a subset of 58 samples was tested for Giardia-specific antigen using a coproantigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The ear swabs were examined for the presence of parasitic mites. Overall, almost 93 % of the cats were identified harbouring one or more parasites: 59.1 % (95 % confidence interval (CI), 53.0–65.0) and 86.9 % (95 % CI, 82.7–91.1) of the cats tested positive for ecto- or endoparasites, respectively; 53.2 % of the cats had evidence for concomitant ectoparasite infestation and endoparasite infection. For ectoparasite infestation, prevalence was 52.0 % for total fleas (Ctenocephalides felis, 51.2 %; Ctenocephalides canis, 2.0 %; and Leptopsylla segnis, 0.4 %), 8.3 % each for Felicola subrostratus and Otodectes cynotis and 4.0 % for Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato. The most prevalent endoparasites were Toxocara ascarids (48.0 %), followed by Aelurostrongylus lungworms (39.7 %), Capillaria spp. (31.7 %), hookworms (32.9 %), dipylidiid cestodes (27.8 %), Cystoisospora spp. (23.4 %) and taeniid cestodes (2.0 %). One animal was found shedding Pseudamphistomum truncatum eggs. Giardia-specific antigen was detected in 29.3 % of the 58 cats tested. Mixed infections with up to six endoparasites concurrently (excluding Giardia) and mixed infestations with two or three species of ectoparasites were recorded in 73.1 and 22.8 % of the parasite-positive cats, respectively. Cats ≤9 months of age were more frequently tested (p?Toxocara and Cystoisospora infections than cats >9 months while these cats tested more often (p?Aelurostrongylus-positive compared with the younger cats. The prevalence of infestation with ectoparasites did not differ between the cats of these two age groups. Given the impact that some of the parasites may have upon animal health as well as the zoonotic potential of some of them, measures should be taken to minimise the transmission of these parasites.  相似文献

M. genitalium is a reemerging microorganism, responsible for sexually transmissible infections (STIs), with prevalence which varies depending on the country and population group studied. We report here M. genitalium prevalence among the specimens received for STI diagnosis in our routine microbiological laboratory in the university hospital in Marseille, France. We tested 4 624 samples from 3 793 patients using qPCR for M. genitalium, C. trachomatis, N. gonorrheae, T. pallidum. Of these samples, 528 (13.6%) patients were tested positive for at least one pathogen and 126 (3.3%) were positive for M. genitalium. M. genitalium is the second most prevalent micro‐organism detected in women after C. trachomatis (10.4%) and the third most prevalent in men after C. trachomatis (5.1%) and N. gonorrhoeae (4.4%). We observed no significant differences between the prevalence of M. genitalium in vaginal, urethral and urine specimens (p = 0.9). Prevalence of M. genitalium is significantly higher in patients aged between 10–30 years (4.1%) compared to those aged between 30 and 50 years (2.7%) (p = 0.02, RR = 1.54 [1.06–2.24]) and patients over 50 years of age (1.1%) (p = 0.003, RR= 3.98 [1.47–10.8]). M. genitalium is a common agent of STI, therefore we suggest that this micro‐organism should be systematically tested during chronic, recurrent, or antibiotic resistant genital infections and in populations at high‐risk of STIs.  相似文献

BackgroundBoth the global incidence and the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to increase, affecting hundreds of millions of individuals, particularly in low-to middle-income countries. Although a definitive diagnosis is desirable to inform STI treatment, syndromic management is the most widely used strategy in resource-limited settings. With the development of point-of-care (POC) tests, it is important to discuss how laboratories will need to adapt to new training and supervisory roles in support of testing, which will largely be performed by peripheral clinical staff.ObjectivesTo discuss potential applications of STI POC tests, how they could improve existing STI control strategies and the role of clinical and reference laboratories in support of initiatives to improve STI management and control activities.SourcesNarrative literature review and expert opinion.ContentThe paper outlines the current status of the STI epidemic worldwide and discusses the problems associated with current approaches to control these infections, particularly in low-resource settings. The roles of clinical and reference laboratories will need to change to provide support for POC and near-patient STI testing as these technologies are introduced into clinical as well as laboratory settings.ImplicationsLaboratories will be expected to play a leading role in the introduction and implementation of POC and near-patient STI testing. They will be required to facilitate training and provide technical and supervisory support to clinical staff on the use of these technologies to augment existing STI management and surveillance programmes. In order to provide quality service, they will need to develop, introduce and maintain sustainable local quality control and external quality assurance systems. Evidence from implementation research for introduction and scale up of STI POC tests in different STI epidemic and laboratory infrastructure settings is required.  相似文献

Owing to their frequency and their own complications, sexually transmitted infections (STI) constitute a very classical health problem, especially in developing areas. The interest for those diseases has been on the rise since the beginning of the AIDS pandemic. Conventional sexually transmitted diseases (such as syphilis, chancroid, infections due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae and to Chlamydia trachomatis) are potent cofactors of HIV transmission. It has been established that the treatment of patients with STI was able to lower the HIV incidence at the community level. Today the fight against STI relies mainly on preventive measures (promotion of lower risk sexual behaviours, blood transfusion safety), and on medical management of patients with STI. In order to treat rapidly cheaply and efficiently a great number of patients, standardised syndromic approaches, using generic drugs, have been elaborated for the most common STI. Other important complementary measures are based on the treatment of sexual partners and on the promotion of condom use. In addition to prevention of their specific complications, the fight against STI has become a major component of health policies against AIDS in developing countries.  相似文献

An etiological study of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) was conducted among female sex workers (FSWs) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Endocervical swab and blood samples from 269 street-based FSWs were examined for Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Trichomonas vaginalis as well as for antibodies to Treponema pallidum and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2). Sociodemographic data and data regarding behavior were also collected. A total of 226 of the 269 FSWs (84%) were positive for the STI pathogens studied. Among the 269 FSWs, 35.5% were positive for N. gonorrhoeae, 25% were positive for C. trachomatis, 45.5% were positive for T. vaginalis, 32.6% were seropositive for T. pallidum, 62.5% were seropositive for HSV-2, and 51% had infections with two or more pathogens.  相似文献

Background and objectives

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) contribute largely to the burden of health in South Africa and are recognized as major contributors to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic. Young women are particularly vulnerable to STIs. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to examine the risk factors associated with prevalent and incident STIs among women who had participated in three clinical trials.

Methods

A total of 5,748 women were screened and 2293 sexually active, HIV negative, non-pregnant women were enrolled in three clinical trials in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. The prevalence of individual STIs Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhea (NG), syphilis, and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) was assessed at screening; and incident infections were evaluated over a 24 month period.

Results

Overall, the combined study population of all three trials had a median age of 28 years (inter-quartile range (IQR):22–37), and a median duration of follow-up of 12 months. Prevalence of STIs (CT, NG, TV, or syphilis) was 13% at screening. The STI incidence was estimated to be 20/100 women years. Younger women (<25 years, p?<?0.001), women who were unmarried (p?<?0.001) and non-cohabiting women (p?<?0.001) were shown to be at highest risk for incident STIs.

Conclusions

These results confirm the extremely high prevalence and incidence of STIs among women living in rural and urban communities of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where the HIV epidemic is also particularly severe. These findings strongly suggest an urgent need to allocate resources for STI and HIV prevention that mainly target younger women.

Prevention of postcopulatory genital grooming in male rats increased the likelihood that they would be genitally infected with a marker microorganism (Staphylococcus aureus) inoculated previously into the vagina of female rats. Male as well as female rat saliva was found to have very minimal bactericidal effects on the marker organism indicating that physical washing during postcopulatory grooming can prevent the transmission of infectious organisms. Saliva of both male and female rats, however, was found to have bactericidal effects on 2 murine pathogens (Pasteurella pneumotropica and Mycoplasma pulmonis) that infect the genitalia of males and females, revealing that the physical washing effect can be enhanced by specific antibacterial properties of saliva for some reputed genital pathogens.  相似文献

This study assessed the age and gender distribution of Chlamydia trachomatis infections among patients attending two clinics for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Slovenia. Between January 1999 and December 2003, 1714 heterosexual male and 892 heterosexual female patients were tested for C. trachomatis. The prevalence of C. trachomatis infection was 19.5% (n = 334) for male patients and 10.7% (n = 96) for female patients, with the highest prevalence in the group aged 15-30 years. The prevalence decreased between 2000 and 2003 among female patients. The results support the implementation of routine screening for C. trachomatis genital infection among male and female patients aged < 30 years attending STD clinics in Slovenia.  相似文献
