Weight, length, and skinfold thicknesses were measured in 4634 term and preterm neonates. Sex and weight/length ratio were important determinants of the amount and distribution of the subcutaneous fat store at birth. Gestational age, weight, length, and other ponderal indices did not explain subcutaneous fat variability.  相似文献

Aims:  Population-based research on children's possible prejudice against thin, obese and average body sizes is scarce. This study examined children's prejudice against various body sizes of both sexes. The effects of sex, body size, place of residence and socio-economic status (SES) on children's prejudice were also investigated.
Methods:  In 2005, a nationally representative sample of 10-year-old children (N = 1409) responded to a questionnaire measuring stereotypes and prejudice against thin, average-weight and obese silhouettes.
Results:  As estimated by odds ratios (ORs), children were more likely to report prejudice against obesity (OR = 53, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 42–67) and thinness (OR = 20, 95% CI: 16–26) than against average body weight. The risk of being prejudiced varied with child's sex and with sex and body size of the silhouette figure. No association was found between own body weight and prejudice against various body sizes. Children with high SES were more likely to be prejudiced against obesity compared with children with low SES (OR = 1.2, 95% CI: 1.1–1.4).
Conclusion:  This large, population-based study showed that Swedish 10-year-old children hold stereotypical attitudes and are prejudiced against not only peers with obesity but also those with thin body sizes. Interestingly, no association was found between own body weight and prejudice against various body sizes.  相似文献

The RWT method for predicting adult stature from childhood variables uses the current recumbent length and weight of the child, the stature of each parent, and the skeletal age of the child as predictor variables. There is only a small increase in the errors of prediction if population mean values are substituted in the prediction equations when the father's stature, the skeletal age of the child, or both these variables are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between prematurity and birth defects. STUDY DESIGN: In a population-based cohort study, infants with birth defects were ascertained through the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program, a surveillance system with active methods of ascertainment. Gestational age data were obtained from birth certificates of liveborn, singleton infants with and without birth defects born in the 5-county metropolitan Atlanta area. RESULTS: Among 264,392 infants with known gestational ages born between 1989 and 1995, 7738 were identified as having birth defects (2.93%). Premature infants (<37 weeks' gestation) were more than two times as likely to have birth defects than term infants (37-41 weeks) (risk ratio = 2.43; 95% CI 2.30-2.56). This relationship was evident for several categories of birth defects. The rate of birth defects varied by gestational age categories, with the highest risk in the 29- to 32-week gestational age category (risk ratio = 3.37). CONCLUSIONS: The risk for birth defects is increased in premature infants. Awareness of this relationship is important for clinicians caring for premature infants. The morbidity and mortality associated with a particular defect may be significantly altered by the presence of prematurity. Further study of this association may provide insight into the etiology of these relatively common problems.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Studies about the relationship between high-molecular-weight adiponectin (HMW-adn) and anthropometric variables among population-based elementary schoolchildren have been too limited, especially in Japan, where blood collection is not usually performed in the annual health examination at elementary schools. The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between HMW-adn and anthropometric variables (body mass index [BMI], percent body fat [%BF], waist circumference [WC], and waist-to-height ratio [WHtR]) among population-based elementary schoolchildren in Japan. METHODS: Subjects comprised all fourth-grade schoolchildren (9 or 10 years of age) in the town of Ina, Saitama Prefecture, Japan during 2005--2008 (N = 1675). After excluding 21 subjects because of refusal to participate or incomplete data, data from a total of 1654 subjects (846 boys and 808 girls) were analyzed. The height, weight, %BF, and WC of each subject were measured, while blood samples were drawn from the subjects to measure adiponectin levels (HMW-adn and total adiponectin). Childhood obesity was determined according to the age- and sex-specific cut-off points proposed by the International Obesity Task Force. Spearman's correlation coefficients between adiponectin levels and anthropometric variables were calculated for each sex. RESULTS: The anthropometric variables were negatively correlated with HMW-adn in both boys and girls. Correlation coefficients of HMW-adn with anthropometric variables in the obesity group were consistently higher than those in the non-obesity group among both boys and girls. In addition, only WHtR was significantly correlated with HMW-adn regardless of sex and physique (obesity or non-obesity); the correlation coefficient was -0.386 among boys and -0.543 among girls in the obesity group, while it was -0.124 among boys and -0.081 among girls in the non-obesity group. CONCLUSIONS: HMW-adn was negatively correlated with anthropometric variables, while the correlation coefficients of HMW-adn with anthropometric variables in the obesity group were consistently higher than those in the non-obesity group. Moreover, only WHtR was significantly associated with HMW-adn regardless of sex and physique. The results of this study suggested that it is useful to monitor WHtR as a surrogate for HMW-adn among elementary school students, especially obese children.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To establish the contributions of birth weight (BW), gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and parental age on risks for special education (SE) placements in school-age children. METHODS: A population-based sample of 900 school-age children attending the following full-time SE groups: at level 1, children had isolated neurodevelopmental, physical, or other impairments; at level 2, borderline to mild intellectual disability (ID); and at level 3, moderate to severe ID. Three hundred and one children enrolled in mainstream education formed the control group (level 0). For all children with siblings, we defined familiar forms of learning disorders as having a sibling in one of the SE groupings. We performed our analysis for the entire cohort as well as comparing risk factors within the familial and non-familial types of SE groupings. RESULTS: In multinomial logistic regression analysis, age of father 40 years, low BW (<2500g or <-2 SD), male sex, and parent's lower SES, all increased the probability of SE placement. In the familial forms of levels 2 and 3, the parental SES was lower and, in addition, in the level 2, the family size was bigger. Furthermore, in the non-familial form of level 2, both the low and the high (4000g) BW were more common. CONCLUSIONS: Among the known risk factors for learning disabilities (LD), our study highlighted the importance of a higher paternal age and a lower SES especially in the familial forms of LD.  相似文献

The aim was to evaluate neuropsychological performance and its pre-, and perinatal predictors in low birth weight (LBW) preschool children. A population-based sample of 137 5-year-old children with birth weights less than 2000 g and without major handicaps was compared with a random sample of 152 normal birth weight term controls. Main assessment tools were all subscales from the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence Revised, subscales from the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities and tests of manual dexterity and figure copying. The LBW children showed significantly lower mean scores compared to controls on tests of visuo-spatial and visuo-motor abilities, but were comparable to controls in other areas, confounding parental factors were controlled for. 14 of the LBW children, there were signs of maternal chorio-amnionitis. Twelve of these had premature rupture of membranes lasting more than 24 h. These 14 children had a mean performance IQ of 87 (SD 5) compared to 100 (SD 15) for the LBW children without maternal signs of chorio-amnionitis (P = 0.001). Having a small head circumference at birth was a less powerful, but statistically significant predictor of impaired performance. Conclusion Low birth weight is associated with impaired performance on visuo-spatial and visuo-motor tasks. Signs of maternal chorio-amnionitis and a small head circumference at birth may be risk factors for such impairment. Received: 20 November 1996 / Accepted: 5 May 1997  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Because obesity promotes inflammation and imposes mechanical constraints to the airways, a high birth weight may be a risk factor for asthma in childhood. However, to our knowledge, few studies have examined this potential relationship. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between high birth weight and risk of emergency visits for asthma during childhood. DESIGN: Population-based cohort study. SETTING: Alberta, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: All neonates born at term (> or =37 weeks) between April 1, 1985, and March 31, 1988, in Alberta (N = 83,595). We divided the cohort into birth-weight categories: low (<2.5 kg), normal (2.5-4.5 kg), or high (>4.5 kg). The cohort was observed prospectively for 10 years.Main Outcome Measure Comparison of risk of emergency visits for asthma over 10 years across the birth-weight categories. RESULTS: Neonates born with a high birth weight had a significantly increased risk of emergency visits for asthma during childhood compared with neonates born with a normal birth weight (relative risk [RR], 1.16; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.29). The relationship between birth weight and emergency visits for asthma beyond a birth weight of 4.5 kg was linear, such that every increment of 0.10 kg in birth weight was associated with an additional 10% (95% CI, 2%-19%) increase in the risk of emergency visits for asthma. Other factors associated with an elevated risk for emergency asthma visits during childhood included male sex (RR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.22-1.30), aboriginal status (RR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.11-1.29), and low-income status (RR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.06-1.16). CONCLUSIONS: A high, but not low, birth weight is a risk factor for increased emergency visits during childhood. The risk increases linearly beyond a birth weight of 4.5 kg.  相似文献

We compared sex-specific growth attainment of a population-based cohort of 147/166 (89%) extremely low birthweight (ELBW < 1000 g) and 131/145 (90%) sociodemographically comparable normal birthweight (NBW) cohort at young adulthood, and examined the pattern of growth trajectories and correlates of growth at ages 1, 2, 3, and 8 y, and teen and young adulthood (mean age, 23.3 versus 23.6 y). The proportion considered small for gestational age was ELBW 25% versus NBW 3%; and 26% versus 2% had neurosensory impairments. Weight for age z-scores for ELBW showed substantial decline to age 3 y, with subsequent significant catch-up to adolescence and smaller gains to adulthood. Height for age z-scores showed both sexes of ELBW were disadvantaged at every age compared with NBW and their expected mid-parental height. The BMI z-scores for ELBW showed a sustained incline from age 3 to adulthood, where both sexes normalized to above zero, and were comparable to their peers. ELBW children showed growth failure during infancy, followed by accelerated weight gain and crossing of BMI percentiles at adolescence, a pattern that may increase the risk of insulin resistance and coronary heart disease. However, normalization of BMI for both sexes at adulthood suggests that final growth was proportionate.  相似文献

We have examined mortality from birth through adult life in a cohort of 2562 twins born in Birmingham, UK, between 1950 and 1954. Their birthweights and obstetric details had been recorded as part of a longitudinal study of births in Birmingham. There were a total of 151 perinatal deaths (perinatal mortality rate = 116 per 1000 births) and 227 infant deaths (infant mortality rate = 94 per 1000 live births). 70 deaths occurred after the age of one year. In comparison with national mortality rates in the UK, overall mortality in the twins was high (standard mortality rate, SMR = 259, 95% CI 221-300). Mortality was highest in the first year of life and, although it then declined progressively, it remained significantly higher that that of the general population until age 5 years. The excess mortality was largely due to conditions originating in the perinatal period but there were excess rates of congenital abnormalities, diseases of the respiratory system, digestive system and nervous and sensory organs. A Cox proportional Hazards analysis showed that the risk of death was related to low birthweight, prematurity and male sex. Death of the co-twin was highly predictive of mortality throughout the period of follow up. These studies not only underline the excess mortality associated with twin birth but show for the first time that this excess mortality extends into childhood.  相似文献
