Sediments were collected from the upper, middle and lower reaches of both urban and rural rivers in a typical urbanization zone of the Pearl River delta. Six heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) were analyzed in all sediment samples, and their spatial distribution, pollution levels, toxicity and ecological risk levels were evaluated to compare the characteristics of heavy metal pollution between the two rivers. Our results indicated that the total contents of the six metals in all samples exceeded the soil background value in Guangdong province. Based on the soil quality thresholds of the China SEPA, Cd levels at all sites exceeded class III criteria, and other metals exhibited pollution levels exceeding class II or III criteria at both river sites. According to the sediment quality guidelines of the US EPA, all samples were moderately to heavily polluted by Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. Compared to rural river sites, urban river sites exhibited heavier pollution. Almost all sediment samples from both rivers exhibited moderate to serious toxicity to the environment, with higher contributions from Cr and Ni. A “hot area” of heavy metal pollution being observed in the upper and middle reaches of the urban river area, whereas a “hot spot” was identified at a specific site in the middle reach of the rural river. Contrary metal distribution patterns were also observed along typical sediment profiles from urban and rural rivers. However, the potential ecological risk indices of rural river sediments in this study were equal to those of urban river sediments, implying that the ecological health issues of the rivers in the undeveloped rural area should also be addressed. Sediment organic matter and grain size might be important factors influencing the distribution profiles of these heavy metals.  相似文献

Concentrations and risk assessment of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) were investigated in 106 samples of surface sediments from the East Lake, China in this study. The mean concentration of Zn was highest among the eight heavy metals (225 mg kg?1), followed by As (191 mg kg?1), Cr (145 mg kg?1), Cu (55 mg kg?1), Ni (27.1 mg kg?1), Pb (7.93 mg kg?1), Cd (0.94 mg kg?1) and Hg (0.21 mg kg?1). Niuchao Hu was less polluted by heavy metals compare to the other four lakelets of the East Lake. The correlations among these heavy metals and the results of principal component analysis indicated that the distribution of Cd, Pb and Hg was related to anthropogenic activities, whereas Cu, As and Cr were affected by the parent rocks. Zinc and Ni were influenced both by anthropogenic activities and parent rocks. Based on the Sediment Quality Guidelines, the results of toxicity assessment indicated that adverse effects caused by Cr and As would be expected frequently. Nickel, Zn, Cd and Hg may cause adverse effects occasionally and Cu and Pb may cause toxicity infrequently. Arsenic was found to have the highest acute toxicity by toxic units (TUs), followed by Cr, Ni, Zn, Hg, Cu, Cd and Pb. The potential ecological risk index analysis indicated that As, Cd and Hg had considerable or high ecological risk, whereas Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb had low ecological risk. The potential ecological risk index (RI) of the heavy metals in the surface sediments of East Lake was 483, indicating considerable ecological risk. Close attention should be paid to pollution of the heavy metals in East Lake, China.  相似文献

Sediment core samples from Nashina Lake, Heilongjiang, China were collected using a gravity sampler. The cores were sliced horizontally at 1 cm each to determine the particle size, total concentrations and speciation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Total concentrations of heavy metals were extracted using an acid mixture (containing hydro fluoric acid, nitric acid, and sulphuric acid) and analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. A sequential extraction procedure was employed to separate chemical species. Analysis of results indicate that the concentrations of heavy metals in the sediments of Nashina Lake in descending order are Mn, Cr, Zn, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Cd. The ratios of the average concentrations of four heavy metals (e.g.Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn) to their background values were >1; and those of Mn, Cd, and Pb were >1. Moreover, some toxic metals were mainly distributed in bioavailable fractions. For instance, both Cd and Mn were typically found in Acid-extractable species or Fe–Mn oxide species, and thus can be easily remobilized and enter the food chain. Finally, the analysis of geo-accumulation index showed that anthropogenic pollution levels of Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn were low, but those of Pb and Cd were at the moderate level. As both Pb and Cd are toxic metals, it is highly necessary to prohibit their transformation and accumulation in the sediments.  相似文献

Sediment toxicity of different areas of Spanish littoral was evaluated using an internationally recommended 10 day acute toxicity test with the amphipod Ampelisca brevicornis. Sediment samples from Santander Bay (N Spain), Las Palmas of Gran Canaria (SW Spain), Algeciras Bay (S Spain) and Ría of Huelva (SW Spain) were collected and organic carbon, fines, metals Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, Co and Hg, PAHs and PCBs were analyzed for their characterization. Significant toxic effects compared with control site (P < 0.05) were observed after exposure to the sediments from Las Palmas of Gran Canaria port, from 83.3% of the sites studied in Algeciras Bay and from Ría of Huelva. These effects were associated (P < 0.05) with PCBs and metals Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu in Ría of Huelva and to Ni and Co in the rest of sites. Chemical measurements were compared with international sediment quality guidelines and site-specific guidelines were derived.  相似文献

The spatial distribution, sources, and potential ecological risk of heavy metals and metalloid were evaluated in sediments of the Wuyuer River and its tributaries. Metal and metalloid concentrations and chemical speciation (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, As, Zn and Hg) in 187 surface sediment samples were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Metals and metalloid in the sediments of the Wuyuer River were greater than the background values of the Songnen Plain, and mean heavy metal concentrations were greater in downstream segments of the river than in upstream segments. Speciation results indicated that Cd was chemically mobile and Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Ni were potentially bioavailable. Mercury and As existed mainly in the residual fraction. Hakanson’s potential risk index indicated that the total potential ecological risk of these elements was moderate in the Wuyuer River. Among the selected metals and metalloid, Hg and Cd were the most potentially toxic and mainly distributed near the cities of Keshan, Yi’an and Fuyü. Because the speciation of Cd in the river sediments is highly bioavailable, the concentrations of Cd should be closely monitored. This research provides managers with information needed to better regulate the environment of the Wuyuer River.  相似文献

Common cockles (Cerastoderma edule, L. 1758, Bivalvia: Cardiidae) were subjected to a laboratory assay with sediments collected from distinct sites of the Sado Estuary (Portugal). Cockles were obtained from a mariculture site of the Sado Estuary and exposed through 28-day, semi-static, assays to sediments collected from three sites of the estuary. Sediments from these sites revealed different physico-chemical properties and levels of metals and organic contaminants, ranging from unimpacted (the reference site) to moderately impacted, when compared to available sediment quality guidelines. Cockles were surveyed for bioaccumulation of trace elements (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb) and organic contaminants (PAHs, PCBs and DDTs). Two sets of potential biomarkers were employed to assess toxicity: whole-body metallothionein (MT) induction and digestive gland histopathology. The bioaccumulation factor and the biota-to-soil accumulation factor were estimated as ecological indices of exposure to metals and organic compounds. From the results it is inferred that C. edule responds to sediment-bound contamination and might, therefore, be suitable for biomonitoring. The species was found capable to regulate and eliminate both types of contaminants. Still, the sediment contamination levels do not account for all the variation in bioaccumulation and MT levels, which may result from the moderate metal concentrations found in sediments, the species’ intrinsic resistance to pollution and from yet unexplained xenobiotic interaction effects.  相似文献

Although there are many studies of heavy metal contaminations of sediments, attention has seldom been paid to the problem in developing countries. The purpose of this article is to find the distribution and ecological risk of As, Hg, Cr, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in surface sediment of Baiyangdian which is the biggest wetland in Northeast China. We apply three methodologies. The first is literature analysis comparing total concentrations of heavy metals with other water bodies around world. The second is Chinese Environmental Quality Standard for Soils (EQSS), National Environmental Protection Agency of China 1995, and the third is Soil and Aquatic Sediment Guidelines and Standards issued by New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). The results show that compared to other water bodies around the world, the seven heavy metals are low. However, Cd was found in the most polluting level of EQSS near a village and was second grade some distance from it. The village was also the most polluted site of Zn, which was in the second grade. When assessed by NYSDEC, Cu, Cr, and As contaminated the sediment and with moderate impacts on benthic life while Pb, Hg, and Zn were found at tolerable levels throughout Baiyangdian. The centre of Cu and Cr contamination was also near the village. As is the most polluting heavy metals with a major occurrence in the middle of the wetland. There were no heavy metals creating severe disturbance to the benthic communities. Based on the assessment, this article proposes different options for more sustainable management.  相似文献

With rapid industrialization, China is now facing great challenges in heavy metal contamination in the environment. Human exposure to heavy metals through air, water and food commonly involves a mixture consisting of multiple heavy metals. In this study, eight common heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Hg, Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr, Ni) that cause environmental contamination were selected to investigate the combined toxicity of different heavy metal mixtures in HL7702 cells. Toxicity (24 h LC50) of each individual metal on the cells ranked Hg > Cr = Cd > Cu > Zn > Ni > Mn > Pb; toxicity of the different mixtures ranked: M5 > M3PbHgCd > M5+Mn > M5+Cu > M2CdNi > M4A > M8‐Mn > M8 > M5+Zn > M4B > M8‐Cr > M8‐Zn > M8‐Cu > M8‐Pb > M8‐Cd > M8‐Hg > M8‐Ni > M3PbHgNi > M3CuZnMn. The cytotoxicity data of individual metals were successfully used to build the additive models of two‐ to eight‐component metal mixtures. The comparison between additive model and combination model or partly additive model was useful to evaluate the combined effects in mixture. Synergistic, antagonistic or additive effects of the toxicity were observed in different mixtures. These results suggest that the combined effects should be considered in the risk assessment of heavy metal co‐exposure, and more comprehensive investigations on the combined effects of different heavy metal mixtures are needed in the future. Ecological risk of heavy metals in sediments of the Luan River source water   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15
Distribution and characteristics of heavy metals enrichment in sediment were surveyed including the bio-available form analyzed for assessment of the Luan River source water quality. The approaches of sediment quality guidelines (SQG), risk assessment code and Hakanson potential ecological risk index were used for the ecological risk assessment. According to SQG, The results show that in animal bodies, Hg at the sampling site of Wuliehexia was 1.39 mg/kg, Cr at Sandaohezi was 152.37 mg/kg and Cu at Hanjiaying was 178.61 mg/kg exceeding the severe effect screening level. There were 90% of sampling sites of Cr and Pb and 50% sites of Cu exceeded the lowest effect screening level. At Boluonuo and Wuliehexia, the exchangeable and carbonate fractions for above 50% of sites were at high risk levels and that for above 30% of sites at Xiahenan and Wulieheshang were also at high risk levels. Other sites were at medium risk level. Compared to soil background values of China, Hg and Cd showed very strong ecological risk, and the seven heavy metals of Hg, Cd, Cu, As, Pb, Cr, Zn at ecological risk levels were in the descending order. The results could give insight into risk assessment of environmental pollution and decision-making for water source security.  相似文献

Heavy metals in soils polluted by industrial production are a meaningful topic worldwide. The purpose of this study is to understand the pollution status and spatial distribution of heavy metals in soils. The result can help decision-makers apportion possible soil heavy metals sources and formulate effective pollution control policies. In this paper, 155 soil samples (0–20 cm) were collected and analyzed for eight heavy metals (Cd, Hg, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Ni) from an abandoned industrial area of Tong County, located in Jiangsu Province of Eastern China. The multivariate analysis (including Igeo, Ei/RI, EF, PCA, and CA) and geostatistics (GIS) were used to assess the enrichment level and pollution level of soil heavy metals and identify their sources. The results indicated that eight heavy metals in soils had moderate variations, with CVs ranging from 19.63 to 63.34 %. The pollution level of Igeo of soil heavy metals decreased in the order of Cd~Zn > Cu > Hg~As~Pb~Cr~Ni. The enrichment level of soil heavy metals decreased in the order of Cd > Zn > Hg > Cu > Pb > Ni > As > Cr. According to the Ei, except Cd and Hg were in the significant and moderate ecological risk levels respectively, other soil heavy metals were in the clean or light ecological risk levels, the level of potential ecological risk (RI) of the whole industrial area was moderate. Finally, the source identification of soil heavy metals indicated that Cd and Zn were primarily controlled by human activities, and Hg and Cu were controlled by natural and anthropogenic sources, and As, Pb, Cr, and Ni were mainly controlled by soil parent materials.  相似文献

The main objective of the research was to evaluate the suitability of the Phytotoxkit microbiotest as a tool for hazard assessment of sediments. The concentrations of oil derivatives, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined in sediment samples collected from the urban canal in Opole (Poland), in order to obtain a general insight of the level of sediment contamination. Phytotoxicity of sediments was estimated on the basis of seed germination and root elongation measurements, combined into an overall germination index (GI). The results revealed spatial and vertical differentiation in sediment contamination. A good correlation was obtained between organic matter content and the concentrations of particular sediment pollutants. Values of correlation coefficients at P < 0.05 ranged from 0.3246 for oil derivatives to 0.8929 for PAHs. Phytotoxicity tests, carried out on the monocotyl Sorghum saccharatum and the dicotyls Sinapis alba and Lepidium sativum, showed different responses of the three plant species to sediment samples ranging from growth inhibition to growth stimulation. The GI values revealed the following increasing order of plant sensitivity to contaminated sediments: L. sativum < S. alba < S. saccharatum. The study demonstrated that the Phytotoxkit microbiotest was effective in identifying toxic samples. However, sediment organic matter content and grain-size distribution had a significant impact on both sediment contamination and higher plantresponses to contaminated samples. The implication of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Sediment toxicity in the Gironde Estuary, France, a site contaminated by such trace metals as Cd, Cu, and Zn, was examined monthly from March to October 1997, using concurrently geochemical procedures to assess the mobility of contaminants and ecotoxicity tests with invertebrate larvae (the oyster Crassostrea gigas, the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus, and the copepod Tigriopus brevicornis). Higher mobility of Cd than of Cu and Zn was shown by desorption tests. Both the gross concentrations of Cu and Zn in the sediment and the mobility of these metals showed a temporal evolution, and changes in the toxicity of the sediment to invertebrate larvae generally were observed concomitantly. Little damage was registered in the spring, and greater damage was found in the summer and fall. Positive correlations were shown between mortality in copepods or abnormalities in oyster larvae with the quantities of metals remobilized from sediment at pH 4. On the contrary, no clear temporal trend was shown for total PAH levels in sediment. These correlations and previous toxicological data suggest that sediment-bound metals, particularly Cu and Zn, possibly play a role in biological responses.  相似文献

To investigate the practicality of hypothermia and hypometabolism as sensitive indices of toxicity in the mouse, oxygen consumption was monitored continuously and body temperature was measured at 30 min postinjection following the intraperitoneal administration of various metal salts. Eleven metal ions were tested: Al3+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cr2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, and Zn2+. All metals induced dose-dependent reductions in both oxygen consumption (hypometabolism) and deep body (colonic) temperature. Comparative toxicity of the metal ions was evaluated by calculating the dose of metal ion in dimensions of mmol/kg body mass needed to reduce colonic temperature to 35 degrees C. The order of toxicity from lowest to highest was as follows: Cr less than Al less than Pb less than Mn less than Mg less than Zn less than Cu less than Co less than Ni less than Hg less than Cd. The threshold doses for reducing body temperature were less than 5% of the LD50 in 6 of the metals studied. Metal salts with relatively low LD50 doses such as Hg, Cd, and Ni were most efficacious in inducing hypothermia and hypometabolism. Moreover, there was a direct linear relationship between dose for inducing hypothermia or hypometabolism and the reported LD50. Hence, the hypothermia and hypometabolism test may prove to be a sensitive and rapid test for the evaluation of toxicity of environmental contaminants.  相似文献

Lianhuan Lake is found in the lowest point of the Songnen Plain in Eastern China and is a typical hardwater lake. Lianhuan Lake is constituted by eighteen lakes and Aobaopao Lake is located in the eastern portion. Geochemical features and pollution history of heavy metals in Aobaopao Lake were investigated. Total metal contents and chemical fractionations of Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr and Zn were analyzed for core sediment samples taken from north sampling site for Core AB1 and south sampling site for Core AB2 of the lake using the speciation extraction procedure proposed by the Commission of the European Communities Bureau of Reference (BCR) together with grain size and TOC measurements. Heavy metal analyses showed that sediments have similar geochemical features. In order to quantify the anthropogenic contamination of the metals according to their speciation composition, the RSP approach was applied. In Core AB1, Cd is moderate and significant contaminate while Mn is minor, moderate and significant contamination. In Core AB2, Cd is more significant contaminate from 3.75 cm to the surface. The risk assessment code (RAC) established by Perin et al. (Heavy Metals in the Environment, CEP Consultants, Edinburgh, 1985) was used to evaluate the risk of heavy metals in sediments of Aobaopao Lake. The results for both cores suggest that Mn and Cd posed a high risk to local environment.  相似文献

Concentrations of metals such as Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were analyzed in the feathers of cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) from three breeding colonies in the Punjab province, Pakistan. The mean concentrations of Ca, Cd, Fe, Pb and Mn were significantly different between the three study sites (River Chenab, River Ravi and Rawal Lake Reservoir). The mean concentrations of Ca, Cd, Fe and Mn were significantly greater at the River Chenab heronry and Cr, Co, Zn, and Pb concentrations at the River Ravi heronry. The feathers of cattle egrets collected from the Rawal Lake Reservoir heronry were least contaminated. Multivariate statistical methods viz., Factor Analysis based on Principal Component Analysis (FA/PCA); Hierarchical Cluster analyses (HACA), and Correlation Analyses identified relatively similar associations of metals and their sources of input. Metals such as Ca, Mg, and K were related with natural input from parent rock material whereas trace metals viz., Cu, Cd, Co, Pb, Ni, and Zn were associated mainly with anthropogenic processes. Metals such as Fe, Mn, and Li were either correlated with natural input or with anthropogenic activities. Concentration of heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, and Cr were well above the threshold level that can cause adverse effects in birds and pose menace to the cattle egrets population in Pakistan. The study suggested that the feathers of cattle egret could be used as a bio-monitor of the local heavy metals contamination.  相似文献

Limnic and brackish water sediments were tested in a modified contact exposure bioluminescence test, the Microtox test. A variety of chemical constituents were analyzed in the sediments such as metals, chlorinated pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls. Sulfur in the common elemental form and pore water hydrogen sulfide were also analyzed. The measured effect in the Microtox toxicity test was correlated with the various chemical parameters to determine the origin of the toxic effect. Based on multivariate data anlaysis, a group of metals including Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd were correlated positively with the Microtox toxicity tested in the direct contact test. Similarly, but to a lesser extent sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, and the pesticides p,p′-DDT and p,p′-DDD were also correlated. Other pesticides and all the analyzed polychlorinated biphenyls were poorly, if at all, correlated with the toxicity of the samples. In a comparison with the Microtox toxicity of the pure compounds, it was found that, of the analyzed and tested compounds, Zn, Pb, Cu, and elemental sulfur were present in amounts high enough to produce an effect in the test system. This calculation was, however, based on the assumption (unrealistic) that the total amount of a compound in the sediment was available in the test. On the other hand, the metals Cd, Cr, and Ni were found at concentrations of a few percent or less of their EC50 concentrations in the Microtox test of the sediment, γ-Hexachlorocyclohexane and p,p′-DDT were also far less than the concentration required to give an effect in the test system. The pore water content of hydrogen sulfide was also too small to affect the test organism at the EC50 dilution and, similarly, the fraction of the toxicant in the remaining aqueous phase in the sediment after separation of the pore water. Thus only the three metals Zn, Pb, and Cu, and elemental sulfur, were found in concentrations that would give an effect in the test system (0.68–398 times the effect), provided that the substances were available for the organisms. Consequently, elemental sulfur, Zn, Pb, and Cu were indicated as causing the effect in the Microtox test of sediments and not a series of other metal ions, nor tested chloropesticides or chlorinated biphenyls. © 1996 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The effect of heavy metals and organic compounds on the activity of the enzyme beta-galactosidase in a standardized bioassay has been evaluated, considering future applications in environmental monitoring. The tests were done using a commercial extract of a hydrolase from the eukaryote yeast Kluyveromyces lactis and o-nitrophenyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside (ONPG) as substrate. The enzyme was exposed to Cr(VI), Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Pb(II), Hg(II), phenol, sodium dodecyl sulfate, methanol and pentachlorophenol for 5, 15, 30, and 60 min. According to the results, a 15 min exposure time was considered optimum for the performance of the assay. Results of tests with metals showed IC50 values ranging between 9.25mg/L for Cd(II) and 0.015mg/L for Hg(II), with an order of sensitivity of: Cd(II) < Ni(II) < Cr(VI) = Pb(II) < Cu(II) < Hg(II). Sensitivity to organic compounds ranged from 200 to 4,000 mg/L, showing a higher specificity to heavy metals. The present in vitro free enzyme test showed a similar behavior to other tests based on beta-galactosidase such as the MetPlate. Furthermore, when compared to data from the literature on acute toxicity assays currently used in environmental assessment, test results show good agreement regarding the sensitivity to metals. After standardization, the proposed test could be used as a rapid and low-cost assay when evaluating biological effects of heavy metals in monitoring programs.  相似文献

This study employed Jatropha curcas (bioenergy crop plant) to assist in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated field soils. Analyses were conducted on the concentrations of the individual metals in the soil and in the plants, and their differences over the growth periods of the plants were determined. The calculation of plant biomass after 2 years yielded the total amount of each metal that was removed from the soil. In terms of the absorption of heavy metal contaminants by the roots and their transfer to aerial plant parts, Cd, Ni, and Zn exhibited the greatest ease of absorption, whereas Cu, Cr, and Pb interacted strongly with the root cells and remained in the roots of the plants. J. curcas showed the best absorption capability for Cd, Cr, Ni, and Zn. This study pioneered the concept of combining both bioremediation and afforestation by J. curcas, demonstrated at a field scale.  相似文献

Eleven heavy metals in various products of Moringa oleifera were analyzed to determine eleven heavy metals (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mn, Hg, Ni, and Zn) using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry. The products of M. oleifera were purchased in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand. All products were digested with nitric acid solution before determining the concentrations of heavy metals. The recoveries of all heavy metals were found to be in the range of 99.89-103.05%. Several criteria such as linearity, limits of detection, limits of quantification, specificity, precision under repeatability conditions and intermediate precision reproducibility were evaluated. Results indicate that this method could be used in the laboratory for determination of eleven heavy metals in M. oleifera products with acceptable analytical performance. The results of analysis showed that the highest concentrations of As, Cr, Hg, and Mn were found in tea leaves while the highest concentrations of Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn were found in leaf capsules. Continuous monitoring of heavy metals in M. oleifera products is crucial for consumer health.  相似文献
