Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), some organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), were analyzed in yolk sacs of kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) hatchlings from Kongsfjorden at Svalbard (Norwegian Arctic; 79 degrees N) and from Runde, an island on the coast of Norway (62 degrees N). Retinol (vitamin A), retinyl palmitate, and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) were measured in plasma and liver of the hatchlings to examine whether these vitamins were associated with the POPs. Higher levels of PCBs and OCPs were found in hatchlings from Kongsfjorden than in hatchlings from Runde. However, HBCD levels were significantly lower in hatchlings from Kongsfjorden compared to those in hatchlings from Runde. No differences between the two populations of kittiwake hatchlings were found regarding levels of PBDEs. In comparison with seabirds from other European waters and the Canadian Arctic, the kittiwakes seemed to have relatively high levels of PBDEs and HBCD. No effects on morphological variables or vitamin levels by the POPs were revealed, but multivariate regression indicated that liver tocopherol levels may be influenced by POPs.  相似文献

The residues of persistent organochlorinated pollutants (POPs), namely polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) (HCHs, CHLs, HCCPs, DDTs, and dicofol congeners) were investigated in the hair and muscle of road-killed Erinaceus roumanicus and E. concolor in Turkey. Mean residue levels were as follows: in hair, PCBs?=?7.43?±?4.88 ng/g and OCPs?=?9.21?±?1.27 ng/g; in muscle, PCBs?=?30.73?±?2.51 ng/g and OCPs?=?145.04?±?16.59 ng/g. There was no significant difference between species and sex, while there was significant difference between habitats and regions in terms of either total PCB and OCP levels, or POP levels (p?<?0.05). Age was a determinative factor for the bio-accumulation of POPs. The contaminant levels were high in the species, sample areas, and habitats. The data also showed that tissues of hedgehogs are suitable for monitoring and evaluating the bioaccumulation of POP levels in Turkey.  相似文献

Although the coast of Norway is relatively clean regarding contaminants compared to areas of Europe with higher density of both people and industry, levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) exist in the marine ecosystem that may cause chronic exposure effects in wildlife. In this study, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), some organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) were analyzed in yolk sac of European shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) hatchlings from an island situated on the coast of Mid-Norway. In addition, levels of retinol (vitamin A), retinyl palmitate, and alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) were measured in plasma and liver. The shag hatchlings seemed to be relatively highly contaminated by PBDEs and HBCD on a European scale. A negative relationship between PBDE-28 and liver tocopherol levels was revealed, and plasma retinol levels correlated negatively to levels of several PCB congeners, the summed PCB concentrations (sigmaPCBs), and some OCPs. More studies should be done to reveal the effects of POPs, and especially PBDEs, on vitamin status in wild birds.  相似文献

Here we report the first measurements of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE 47, 99, and 153) alongside 11 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 28 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the plasma of albatross from breeding colonies distributed across a large spatial east-west gradient in the North Pacific Ocean. North Pacific albatross are wide-ranging, top-level consumers that forage in pelagic regions of the North Pacific Ocean, making them an ideal sentinel species for detection and distribution of marine contaminants. Our work on contaminant burdens in albatross tissue provides information on transport of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to the remote North Pacific and serves as a proxy for regional environmental quality. We sampled black-footed (Phoebastria nigripes; n?=?20) and Laysan albatross (P. immutabilis; n?=?19) nesting on Tern Island, Hawaii, USA, and Laysan albatross (n?=?16) nesting on Guadalupe Island, Mexico. Our results indicate that North Pacific albatross are highly exposed to both PCBs and OCPs, with levels ranging from 8.8 to 86.9?ng/ml wet weight and 7.4 to 162.3?ng/ml wet weight, respectively. A strong significant gradient exists between Laysan albatross breeding in the Eastern Pacific, having approximately 1.5-fold and 2.5-fold higher levels for PCBs and OCPs, respectively, compared to those from the Central Pacific. Interspecies levels of contaminants within the same breeding site also showed high variation, with Tern black-footed albatross having approximately threefold higher levels of both PCBs and OCPs than Tern Laysan albatross. Surprisingly, while PBDEs are known to travel long distances and bioaccumulate in wildlife of high trophic status, we detected these three PBDE congeners only at trace levels ranging from not detectable (ND) to 0.74 ng/ml wet weight in these albatross.  相似文献

Studies on residue levels and accumulation profiles of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in human adipose tissues of Korean populations are scarce. In this study, concentrations and accumulation features of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in adipose tissues of Korean women age 40–68 years. The highest concentrations were found for PCBs and DDTs, which were 1–2 orders of magnitude greater than the concentrations of hexachlorocyclohexanes, chlordanes, and PBDEs. The concentrations of PCBs and OCPs were lower than those reported for other countries. However, PBDE concentrations were greater than those reported for other countries, suggesting that ongoing exposure to PBDEs is a concern in Korea. The profiles of PBDEs were characterized by the predominance of BDE 209, followed by nona- and octa-BDEs, which are consistent with the consumption patterns of products containing PBDEs in Korea. The concentrations of PCBs and some OCPs were significantly correlated with each other, whereas PBDEs showed low or moderate correlations with other POPs, suggesting differences in exposure routes and biotransformation potentials of the compounds studied. The concentrations of organochlorines and PBDEs were not correlated with subjects’ age and body mass index. The results of this study provide baseline information on POPs in adipose tissues of the general population in Korea.  相似文献

In recent decades, knowledge and concern regarding persistent organic pollutants and the environmental hazards they may pose have increased considerably, leading to international agreements such as the United Nations environment program Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants (POPs), to minimize further release of POPs into the environment (UNECE Protocol, 1979; UNEP Stockholm convention, 2001; UNECE Convention, 1998). National POP monitoring programs should be designed to identify, characterize and address the release of the POPs listed in the Stockholm convention. However, analyses of grab samples only provide crude snapshots of total concentrations at single points in space and time, which may be highly unrepresentative of average concentrations, and fail to account for differences in the POPs’ bioavailability and various other relevant factors. To obtain a better understanding of the fate and availability of pollutants in the environment it is necessary to obtain data regarding their site-specific and regional exposure levels. Exposure levels expressed in terms of total chemical concentrations do not reflect the actual exposure of organisms, and thus may not accurately reflect the true risks posed. Therefore, environmental monitoring programs would be improved by using reliable, integrative sampling methods that would not only allow time-weighted average concentrations of pollutants in the environment to be determined, but also facilitate assessments of the risks these chemicals pose to the environment.  相似文献

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and their transformation products, are the most investigated organic environmental contaminants within the past five decades. Organochlorines have been found in virtually all environmental compartments on the globe. Severe environmental implications have been shown to be associated with the presence of the POP group of contaminants in the environment. However, in the late 1990s, Canadian scientists first pinpointed the implication of POPs for high-altitude environments in a comprehensive way (Blais et al., 1998, Nature 395, 585-588). Under certain meteorological and geographic conditions, high-altitude environments can serve as "cold condensers" for atmospheric POP loadings. Subsequent investigations in high-altitude environments in Asia, Europe, and North and South America have confirmed suspicions that high-altitude mountainous regions have the potential to serve as focus regions for POPs and even for nonpersistent, medium-lived contaminants, such as "currently used pesticides", due to cold condensation and deposition in high altitudes. Although the presence and the altitude-dependent increase of POP levels in mountainous regions are confirmed by many international studies, the ecotoxicological consequences still remain largely unknown. At present, only a few studies have been published describing the biological effects in high-altitude environments due to increased POP exposure. Therefore, in this early stage of the international research effort on the ecotoxicological risk evaluation of persistent contaminants in high-altitude, pristine ecosystems, the present review intends to summarize the current state of research on POPs in high-altitude environments and draw preliminary conclusions on possible consequences of the presence of POPs in mountainous ecosystems based on currently available information from alpine and related Arctic environments.  相似文献

Background

Studies on the associations between persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and smoking according to gender and smoking amount (cigarettes/day) are limited, and the results regarding the relationship between POPs and smoking are not completely consistent across studies.

Objectives

The smoking rate in Korea is one of the highest among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. We investigated the association between serum concentrations of POPs and cigarette smoking in Koreans by smoking status (never-smoker/ever-smoker) and smoking amount (cigarettes/day) according to gender.

Methods

Serum concentrations of 32 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 19 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured in 401 participants (232 men and 169 women) who received health examinations during the Korean Cancer Prevention Study-II. We compared POP levels in ever-smokers and never-smokers and conducted multivariate logistic regression analyses to identify associations between POPs and smoking.

Results

Among women, the concentrations of PCB 156, PCB 167, and PCB 180 were significantly higher in ever-smokers than in never-smokers. After adjustments for age, body mass index, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, and alcohol intake, serum PCB 157 concentration was positively associated with male ever-smokers (OR 2.26; 95% CI, 1.01–5.04). In addition, trans-nonachlordane in OCPs as well as PCBs was significantly positively related with female ever-smokers (OR 3.21; 95% CI, 1.04–9.86). We found that subjects who smoked fewer than 15 cigarettes/day had a higher risk of having high POP concentrations than never-smokers.

Conclusions

These results indicate that smoking may be associated with human serum POPs levels.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are stable lipophilic compounds which persist in soil, water, sediments or biota for a very long time. As they can be transported by air over long distances, they were found in environmental samples in locations where they were not used. This environmental ubiquity and toxic effects, puts PCB and OCPs in the focus of scientific investigation. This review summarises physical and chemical properties of OCPs and PCBs, their use and distribution in the biosphere, and their effects on human health. Vegetation, particularly coniferous trees, are often used in biomonitoring of these compounds. Because of the widespread distribution of the pine trees, pollution monitoring is possible on local, regional and global scale, and this article compares monitoring results from Croatia and other countries. Despite the ban or restricted use of PCBs and OCPs, they are still present in the environment. Their levels in pine needles are relatively low (ng/g dry weight), except when there is a recent input of these pollutants occurs which increases their levels. This review suggests that pine needles are suitable for PCB and OCP monitoring and briefly describes analytical procedures involved, pointing out some methodological problems encountered in the process.  相似文献

Risks from persistent organic pollutants (POPs) remain largely a mystery for threatened loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). The present study examines regional-scale POP differences in blood plasma from adult male C. caretta based on movement patterns. Turtles were captured near Port Canaveral, Florida, USA, in April of 2006 and 2007 and fitted with satellite transmitters as part of a National Marine Fisheries Service-funded project. Residents (n = 9) remained near the capture site, whereas transients (n = 10) migrated northward, becoming established in areas largely from south of Pamlico Sound, North Carolina, to north of Cape May, New Jersey, USA. Blood was sampled from the dorsocervical sinus of each turtle and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and toxaphenes. Blood plasma concentrations of OCPs and total PBDEs were elevated in transients (p < 0.05) and in some cases were correlated with turtle size. Migratory adults showed an atypical PBDE congener profile relative to other published studies on wildlife, with PBDE 154 being the dominant congener. Additionally, PCB congener patterns differed between groups, with total PCBs slightly elevated in transients. This supports the idea that foraging location can influence exposure to, and patterns of, POPs in highly mobile species such as C. caretta. Understanding patterns of contamination informs wildlife managers about possible health risks to certain subpopulations. The present study is the first to examine POPs in the rarely studied adult male sea turtle and to couple contaminant measurements with satellite tracking.  相似文献

BackgroundLittle is known about the proportion of oral contraceptive pill (OCP) users that use progestin-only pills (POPs), factors associated with POP use, and whether out-of-pocket expenditures and dispensing patterns are similar to combined oral contraceptives (COCs).Study DesignObservational cohort using 1996–2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys.ResultsAmong all OCP users, 4% used POPs and changed little between 1996 and 2008. Women were more likely to use POPs if they received postpartum care (p<.001), had a diagnosis of hypertension (p<.001) or resided in the West (p<.01). POP users, compared to COC users, were more likely to pay $15 and more (p<.01) and less likely to obtain more than one pack per purchase (p<.001), controlling for age, race/ethnicity and insurance coverage.ConclusionPOP use is very low in the United States. POP users obtained fewer packs per purchase compared with COC users, suggesting that POP may be used as transitional OCPs, particularly during the postpartum period.  相似文献

Objectives: The purpose of this report is to outline current regulations to control chemical environmental pollution in Japan, with special references to internationally defined 12 persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Materials: Law concerning the Examination and Regulation of Manufacture, etc. of Chemical Substances [(LERCS); enacted in 1973] and related administrative activities of monitoring of the environment in Japan. Results: Among the existing chemicals identified by the 1972 Chemicals Inventory, LERCS designates aldrin, chlordanes, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, HCB, PCBs, poly(Cl n ; n=3 or more)-chlorinated naphthalene (PCNs) and bis(tributyltin) oxide (TBTO) as Class 1 specified chemical substances which are under strict regulation, such as prohibition of production, import, or use in principle. In addition LERCS designates 23 Class 2 specified chemical substances (including 13 tributyltin and seven triphenyltin compounds) for which notification of scheduled and past production, compliance with technical guidelines and compliance with labeling standards is requested. When compared with the 12 POPs, the designation covers most of them except for mirex and toxaphene, which have never been used in Japan. The regulation has been effective in reducing substantially the levels of the designated chemical substances (and therefore the 12 POPs except for dioxins and furans) in the general environment in Japan. Efforts are currently focused under a newly enacted law to reduce the emission of the two non-intentionally produced pollutants of dioxins and furans, especially from city waste incinerators, so that emission in 2002 should be 10% of that in 1997. Conclusion: Regulations to control chemical emissions have been effective in reducing POPs levels in the environment in Japan, and further efforts have been made under a new law to reduce the emission of dioxins, furans and co-planar PCBs. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) because of their physical and chemical properties belong to Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). They are stable in the environment and due to lipophilic properties, have potential impact to human health. Currently these compounds are present in all kind of environmental samples all over the world. Levels of PBDE in samples originated from U.S. are higher than levels reported from Europe and Japan, what may be linked to common use these flame retardants in this country. Environmental (including humans) concentration of PBDE have increased rapidly in the last decade. Predominant congeners detected in all matrices are BDE-47, -99, -153, -209. Recent Swedish report however noticed decrease of PBDE concentrations what can be consequence of phase-out of these compounds in this country. It has been suggested that the environmental levels of PBDE may influence human nervous and immunological system as well as they may disrupt hormonal homeostasis. Research studies suggest also that the exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers may be associated with increased risk of cancers. Therefore, continuation of research concerning occurrence and toxicity of PBDE has reasonable grounds.  相似文献

Previous literature has reported the fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in mountainous regions, but the Himalayas have received little attention, and few results from this region have been published. The present study collected soil and grass samples from the Mt. Qomolangma (Everest) area, central Himalayas, China, from the elevation range 4700 to 5620 m. We analyzed all samples for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) to determine the level of OCP contamination in the Qomolangma region. The soil samples contained 0.385 to 6.06 ng g–1 of DDT only, and these concentrations were lower than those from Europe and mountains close to industrial emissions. Our study detected a number of OCPs in the grass samples, such as hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) (0.354 to 7.82 ng g–1), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) (0.0156 to 1.25 ng g–1), endosulfan (0.105 to 3.14 ng g–1), and DDT components (1.08 to 6.99 ng g–1). Their concentrations were higher than those in pine needles from Alberta, Canada. Our measurements of HCH and DDT in grass samples showed the same or slightly higher concentration levels than reported in moss from Mt. Qomolangma 15 years ago. This result and the analysis of isomer ratios (α/γ-HCH and p-p’-DDE/p-p’-DDT) indicate recent releases of OCPs from a nearby region, possibly from dicofol use in India. We also investigated the elevation distribution of OCPs and found that HCH and HCB were progressively concentrated in colder, higher elevation sites. A bioconcentration factor (BCF) of grass was calculated, and the BCF values increased with the increasing elevation, indicating that the cold condensation of POPs at high-elevation sites may increase the potential threat to vegetation and the food chain in the mountain ecosystem.  相似文献

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), such as hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), are ubiquitous anthropogenic environmental contaminants. They are persistent, broad-spectrum toxicants that accumulate in the food web with potential risks to the ecosystem and human health. HCHs were the predominant contaminants in Baiyangdian Lake, North China. Concentrations of HCHs and DDTs ranged from 58 to 563 ng/g lipid weight (lw) and 21 to 401 ng/g lw, respectively, for aquatic biota samples. The highest levels of HCHs and DDTs were observed in muscles of yellow catfish. The mean concentrations of OCPs were 4.6 ng/L for water, 95 ng/g dry weight (dw) for aquatic plants, and 14 ng/g dw for sediments. Among the isomers and metabolites, α-HCH and p,p′-1,1-di(p-chlorophenyl)-2,2-dichloroethylene (p,p′-DDE) were the predominant congeners in biota samples. Correlations between log lipid-normalized concentrations of HCHs and DDTs and trophic levels (TLs) based on analysis of stable isotopes of nitrogen confirmed that persistent organic pollutants were magnified in the Baiyangdian Lake food web. Significant positive relationships were found for α-HCH and p,p′-DDT and their trophic magnification factors, which were 1.6 and 1.7, respectively. These results provide evidence of biomagnification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in freshwater food webs.  相似文献

Exposure to PCBs and p,p'-DDE and human sperm chromatin integrity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE), the major metabolite of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), are stable lipophilic compounds widely found in the environment and in the general population. They can enter the food chain, and their negative impact on male reproduction is currently under active scrutiny. To explore the hypothesis that environmental exposure to these compounds is associated with altered sperm chromatin structure integrity in human sperm, we conducted a study of 176 Swedish fishermen (with low and high consumption of fatty fish, a very important exposure source of POPs). We determined serum levels of 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (CB-153) and p,p'-DDE, and we used the sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) to assess sperm DNA/chromatin integrity. When CB-153 serum levels (individual dose range, 39-1,460 ng/g lipid) were categorized into equally sized quintiles, we found an association with the DNA fragmentation index (%DFI). A significantly lower %DFI was found in the lowest CB-153 quintile (< 113 ng/g lipid) compared with the other quintiles; there was a similar tendency, although not statistically significant, between %DFI and p,p'-DDE. These results suggest that POP exposure may have a slight negative impact on human sperm chromatin integrity.  相似文献

Persistent toxic chemicals in the US food supply   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3       下载免费PDF全文
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have spread throughout the global environment to threaten human health and damage ecosystems, with evidence of POPs contamination in wildlife, human blood, and breast milk documented worldwide. Based on data from the US Food and Drug Administration, this article provides a brief overview of POPs residues in common foods in the United States food supply. The analysis focuses on 12 chemical compounds now targeted for an international phase out under the Stockholm Convention on POPs. The available information indicates that POPs residues are present in virtually all categories of foods, including baked goods, fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, and dairy products. Residues of five or more persistent toxic chemicals in a single food item are not unusual, with the most commonly found POPs being the pesticides DDT (and its metabolites, such as DDE) and dieldrin. Estimated daily doses of dieldrin alone exceed US Environmental Protection Agency and US Agency for Toxic Substances Disease Control reference dose for children. Given the widespread occurrence of POPs in the food supply and the serious health risks associated with even extremely small levels of exposure, prevention of further food contamination must be a national health policy priority in every country. Implementation of the Stockholm Convention will prevent further accumulation of persistent toxic chemicals in food. Early ratification and rapid implementation of this treaty should be an urgent priority for all governments.  相似文献

Human activities produce polluting compounds such as the Persistent Organic Pollutants group (POPs) which may interact with agriculture. These molecules raised concern about risk of transfer through the food chain via the animal product. The POPs are characterised by a strong persistence in the environment, a high volatility and a lipophilicity which lead to their accumulation in fat tissues. These compounds are enlisted in international conventions to organise the information about their potential toxicity for humans and the environment. The aim of this paper is to study transfer in the food chain of three groups of POPs: the dioxins-furans (PCDD/F), the polychlorobiphenyls (PCB) and the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH). The results show that the contamination of fodder by these compounds is observed when they are exposed to emission sources compared to remote areas. They also show that a differential transfer of the molecules is detected towards biological matrices (milk).  相似文献

The presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the fetal environment raises concerns for their possible interferences with the developmental process, resulting into morphological and/or functional impairments of the organism. Human biomonitoring has been widely recognized as the action to be undertaken to characterize children's exposure to environmental pollutants in the different life stages, starting from conception. The main objective of the present study was to analyze the relationship between concentrations assessed in maternal blood versus those present in umbilical cord blood to evaluate if POP levels determined in maternal blood can be considered representative of fetal exposure. Data on POP concentrations determined in maternal blood and umbilical cord blood were retrieved from literature. Studies selected used highly specific analytical techniques, and were published within the last 15 years. Our analysis involved POPs of high toxicological significance, as organochlorinated pesticides, polychlorodibenzodioxins and poliychlorodibenzofurans, polychlorobiphenyls and their hydroxylated metabolites, and polybromodiphenylethers. Linear correlations between maternal and cord blood concentrations, expressed on a lipid base, were observed for most of these pollutants. This result indicates a possible use of data on maternal blood POP levels to quantitatively predict in utero exposure.  相似文献
