This study examined if parental TV viewing, parental self-efficacy or access to media equipment were associated with TV viewing among UK preschool-aged children. Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey of 252 parents of 3–5-year-old children. Parents reported child and parent TV viewing and the number of TVs, DVDs, computers, games consoles, hand-held games consoles, music players and laptop computers in the home. Parents also completed scales which assessed their self-efficacy to limit the screen viewing (SV) and promote the physical activity (PA) and their own PA self-efficacy. Analysis indicated that around two thirds of the children spent two or more hours per day watching TV while 75 % of parents watched ≥2 h of TV per day. Logistic regression models showed that children who had a parent who watched ≥2 h of TV per day were over five times more likely to also watch ≥2 h of TV per day. Each unit increase in parental self-efficacy to limit SV was associated with a 77 % reduction in the likelihood that the child watched ≥2 h of TV per day. Each additional piece of media equipment in the home was associated with a 28 % increase in the likelihood that parents watched ≥2 h of TV per day. Conclusion: Family-based interventions focusing on changing access to home media equipment and building parental self-efficacy to reduce child TV viewing could form part of efforts to reduce TV viewing among preschool children.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Excessive viewing of television (TV) has been linked to aggressive behavior, violence and childhood obesity. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among preschool children and primary schoolchildren in Ankara during March and April 1999 to detect the factors that affect TV viewing time and to evaluate their parents' knowledge, attitudes and practices with regard to TV. The parents were asked to fill out a questionnaire about TV habits of their family, the number and location of TVs in the household and the effect of TV on children. Of 400 questionnaires, 350 answered the questions appropriately for this study. Children were divided into two groups, preschool children and primary schoolchildren. Television viewing time was given daily, as a mean of weekday. RESULTS: The mean age for becoming a TV viewer was 2.7 +/- 1.6 years. Of all, 62% of children spent >/= 2h/day watching TV and 8.3% of children spent > 4 h. The TV viewing time of child was significantly and positively correlated with that of siblings, mother and father for both groups. Age and sleeping time of the child, age and the education level of mother, presence of TV in the child's room and the starting age watching TV did not affect the viewing time. One-half of parents reported that the TV programs watched included violence, and one-third thought TV depicts child abuse, especially emotional abuse. CONCLUSIONS: It was found that the TV watching habits of parents had an influence on those of their children. Therefore, pediatricians should take 'TV histories' of children and their parents and educate parents how to become good TV viewers.  相似文献

Understanding the impact of TV on children's diet and physical activity is important for developing strategies to prevent obesity and sedentary lifestyles. Determining parents' perceptions of television's influence on children's dietary intake and physical activity may provide useful information on this important topic. A questionnaire was developed to assess viewing habits and child requests for food and sport items advertised on TV. It was administered to 66 mothers of children, ages 3-8. Foods that children requested because they had seen them on TV paralleled the frequencies with which these foods were advertised on TV. Weekly viewing hours correlated significantly with (a) reported requests by children and purchases by parents of foods influenced by TV, and (b) children's caloric intake. Children's requests for sport items and physical activities were not significantly correlated with the number of hours of TV viewing. It appears from these data that parents perceive that television influences family purchasing patterns through the mechanism of their children's requests.  相似文献

Pediatricians are encouraged to modify the impact of television on children, based on the assumption that parents mediate children's viewing habits through the home environment. Sixty-six parents of children aged 3 to 8 years responded to an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Responses to questions on family environment were compared with reported childhood viewing of educational programming (Public Broadcasting Service) and the child's television-viewing hours. Most homes surveyed had a videocassette recorder, cable television, and more than one television set. Frequent parental discussion of program content with children was reported by 38% of respondents. Availability of television and parent-child discussion of content were not correlated with viewing hours or viewing Public Broadcasting Service. Frequent use of television as a distraction for the child correlated positively with viewing hours. Viewing Public Broadcasting Service correlated negatively with parent-child coviewing and with use of television as a form of entertainment. Children's own television viewing content correlated positively with viewing Public Broadcasting Service. Of all measured factors in the home environment, parental attitudes were most closely associated with children's viewing habits.  相似文献

To investigate the effects of television (TV) viewing on children, 4876 questionnaires on viewing habits completed by Greek children with the assistance of their parents were analysed. The most important results are summarized below. The mean time spent watching TV ranged from 21–32 h per week. The age when children started watching TV correlated with their later educational achievement: good students started watching TV earlier. Bad students, however, watched more TV, as did children from urban areas, and from lower socioeconomic groups. Children from households with more than one TV (especially if it was in the child’s bedroom) also watched more. Children who watched more TV were less compliant with TV restrictions and more likely to imitate TV characters. Eating while watching TV was associated with obesity only in teenagers. Most children watched TV from appropriate distances, with the lights on, and with the sound at medium volume. Conclusion This study of TV viewing habits in Greek children shows that certain patterns of watching TV may contribute to poor educational achievement, and obesity, in paediatric patients and, therefore, supports the idea of taking „televiewing histories“ when treating these patients. The parents of 151 children, ages 4-16 years, attending the pediatric outpatient clinic of an urban hospital were surveyed to determine if aggressive behavior among children of low literacy and low-income parents is related to excessive television viewing or to sociological variables such as ethnicity/race, education, occupation, and parents' marital status. The survey consisted of 22 questions about the ethnicity, marital status, education, and occupation of the parent, the television viewing behavior of the child, and the externalizing behavior scale of the Child Behavior Checklist of Achenbach (CBC). The television viewing habits of children in this study were not significantly different from viewing habits reported in national surveys of the US population. T scores in the aggression scale of CBC were unrelated to the hours of television watched by children and the control of viewing by the parent but were significantly associated with the employment and marital status of the mother. Children of unemployed and single mothers had higher externalizing-behavior scores, suggesting that family ecological variables may have more influence on children's behavior than the duration of television viewing.  相似文献

The rise of infant TV viewing began in the late 1990s and has become an increasingly common occurrence. Today, over 90% of children begin watching TV regularly before the age of 2 years in spite of recommendations to the contrary. This article reviews what is known about the effects of infant TV viewing on multiple domains of child development including language, cognition and attentional capacity as well as directions for future research.
Conclusion: No studies to date have demonstrated benefits associated with early infant TV viewing. The preponderance of existing evidence suggests the potential for harm. Parents should exercise due caution in exposing infants to excessive media.  相似文献

An increasing number of children worldwide are overweight, and the first step in treating obesity is to identify overweight. However, do parents recognise overweight in their child and which factors influence parental perception? The aim of the present review is to systematically study differences between parental perception and the actual weight status of children. Medline, EMbase, CINAHL and PsychINFO were searched. After screening 2497 abstracts and 106 full texts, two reviewers independently scored the methodological quality of 51 articles (covering 35 103 children), which fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The primary outcome parameters were sensitivity and specificity of parental perception for actual weight status of their child. The methodological quality of the studies ranged from poor to excellent. Pooled results showed that according to objective criteria 11 530 children were overweight; of these, 7191 (62.4%) were incorrectly perceived as having normal weight by their parents. The misperception of overweight children is higher in parents with children aged 2–6 years compared with parents of older children. Sensitivity (correct perception of overweight) of the studies ranged from 0.04 to 0.89, while specificity (correct perception of normal weight) ranged from 0.86 to 1.00. There were no significant differences in sensitivity or specificity for different cut‐off points for overweight, or between newer and older studies. Therefore we can conclude that parents are likely to misperceive the weight status of their overweight child, especially in children aged 2–6 years. Because appropriate treatment starts with the correct perception of overweight, health care professionals should be aware of the frequent parental misperception of the overweight status of their children.  相似文献

BackgroundOne in 10 US adults of childbearing age has limited English proficiency (LEP). Parental LEP is associated with worse health outcomes among healthy children. The relationship of parental LEP to health outcomes for children with special health care needs (CSHCN) has not been systematically reviewed.ObjectiveTo conduct a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature examining relationships between parental LEP and health outcomes for CSHCN.Data SourcesPubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Social Science Abstracts, bibliographies of included studies. Key search term categories: language, child, special health care needs, and health outcomes.Eligibility CriteriaUS studies published between 1964 and 2012 were included if: 1) subjects were CSHCN; 2) studies included some measure of parental LEP; 3) at least 1 outcome measure of child health status, access, utilization, costs, or quality; and 4) primary or secondary data analysis.MethodsThree trained reviewers independently screened studies and extracted data. Two separate reviewers appraised studies for methodological rigor and quality.ResultsFrom 2765 titles and abstracts, 31 studies met eligibility criteria. Five studies assessed child health status, 12 assessed access, 8 assessed utilization, 2 assessed costs, and 14 assessed quality. Nearly all (29 of 31) studies used only parent- or child-reported outcome measures, rather than objective measures. LEP parents were substantially more likely than English-proficient parents to report that their CSHCN were uninsured and had no usual source of care or medical home. LEP parents were also less likely to report family-centered care and satisfaction with care. Disparities persisted for children with LEP parents after adjustment for ethnicity and socioeconomic status.Conclusions and ImplicationsParental LEP is independently associated with worse health care access and quality for CSHCN. Health care providers should recognize LEP as an independent risk factor for poor health outcomes among CSHCN. Emerging models of chronic disease care should integrate and evaluate interventions that target access and quality disparities for LEP families.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine if brief primary care interventions can affect children's media viewing habits and exposure to violence.MethodsEnglish- and Spanish-speaking parents of 2- to 12-year-old children presenting to a pediatric primary care clinic participated in a randomized controlled trial. There were 2 intervention groups; one group viewed 5 minutes from the Play Nicely program and another received a handout, "Pulling the Plug on TV Violence." There were 2 control groups; the primary control group received standard primary care, and the alternative control group viewed a program about obesity prevention. The outcome measure was parental report of changes in media viewing habits and changes in exposure to violence.ResultsA total of 312 of 443 parents who were randomized completed a 2-week follow-up survey. Compared with the primary control group, parents in the video intervention group were more likely to report a change in their children's media viewing habits (odds ratio [OR] 3.29; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.66–6.51) and a change in their children's exposure to violence (OR 4.26; 95% CI 1.95–9.27). Compared with the primary control group, parents in the handout group were more likely to report a change in their children's media viewing habits (OR 4.35; 95% CI 2.20–8.60) and a change in their children's exposure to violence (OR 3.35; 95% CI 1.52–7.35).ConclusionsBrief primary care interventions can affect children's media viewing habits and children's exposure to violence. These results have implications for how to improve primary care services related to decreasing children's media exposure and violence prevention.  相似文献

The present study examined the effects of knowledge of effective parenting strategies, parenting stress and Chinese child-rearing ideologies, on parenting practices and child behaviour problems among Hong Kong Chinese parents. Parents of children aged between 2 and 10 years were recruited through a selection of kindergartens and primary schools across Hong Kong. A total of 106 Hong Kong Chinese parents (76 % mothers and 24 % fathers) participated in the study by completing an online questionnaire. Parents ranged in age from 25 to 53 years (M?=?37.25; SD?=?5.65). Key outcome measures examined in the present study include parental nurturance, dysfunctional parenting and child behaviour problems. Findings revealed that parenting stress was the strongest predictor of parental nurturance, dysfunctional parenting and child behaviour problems. Chinese child-rearing ideologies did not predict any parental behaviour or child behaviour. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.  相似文献

Television viewing has a great impact on various aspects of child’s life. This study was carried out at Sir Padampat Mother & Child Health Institute, Jaipur (Rajasthan). The aim was to study the effects of television viewing on a child’s eating habits, general physical health, physical activities, interest in study and school performance. Only 250 children of 3–10 years age groups were studied for a period of nine months (January 1992 to September 1992). Average duration of television exposure to an individual child was 18.5 hours per week in the study. Significant changes were observed in a childs’ eating habits, weight, physical activity, sleep parttern, interest in study and general physical health. Increase in weight was observed in 19.6% children suggesting that the television viewing may predispose to childhood obesity. In 30.4% cases decrease in physical activity was found, 18.4% children showed decreased interest in study, while 10% children showed decrease in school performance, and sleep pattern was disturbed in 24% children. Medical problems were found in 11.6% children. Significantly two children had precipitation of fits on television viewing.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to identify child, family/household, organization (provider), and neighborhood/community factors associated with parental concern about weight among children with overweight/obesity in order to inform effective interventions for improving health in this pediatric population.MethodsPrevalence of parental concern about child weight was estimated and factors identified within an adapted family ecological framework. Using cross-sectional data from the 2018 National Survey of Children's Health, we conducted bivariate and multivariable analyses of 10 to 17-year olds (N = 15,427) for whom height and weight information was reported by parents or primary caregivers.ResultsThere were 4287 children, aged 10 to 17 years, with overweight/obesity (31%). Approximately 34% of parents of children with overweight/obesity reported being concerned about their child's weight, with the remainder being not concerned. In adjusted analyses, 23% of children with overweight and 45% of children with obesity had parents who reported being concerned. Factors associated with parental concern among children with overweight/obesity included child weight status, female gender, peer social difficulties, the extent of the child's daily activities affected by health conditions, poorer parental coping, and having been told the child was overweight by a provider.ConclusionsOnly one in three parents of children with overweight/obesity reported being concerned about their child's weight, although parental concern was more common among children affected by obesity more so than overweight. A combination of child, family, and organization (provider) factors were associated with parental concern. Provider feedback about child overweight may improve parental awareness of a weight-related health issue.  相似文献

This article examines the differences between self-reports and parent-proxy reports of pediatric health-related quality of life among families receiving child welfare services for child physical abuse and neglect. This study assesses child well-being using a pediatric health-related quality of life measure (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory; PedsQL 4.0) with parent-child dyads (N?=?129). Child and parent reports are compared for total and domain score on the PedsQL. Child-reported scores are lower than parent-proxy reports on total and all domain scores. For the total score, 57 % of child reports are below the clinical cutoff for poor well-being compared with 19 % of parent proxy reports. Analyses indicate poor agreement between parent and child reports, with this disagreement associated with high parent anger and parental self-report of poor mental health. Fully assessing child health and well-being requires multiple perspectives of child well-being. Gaining information from both the child and the parent provides different but equally useful information.  相似文献

Although complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widely used in the pediatric population, research on the use of these therapies in the pediatric oncology population is of mixed quality. In this multicenter survey, we investigated the prevalence of CAM use, possible determinants of use, and parental attitude towards communication and research on CAM therapies. The prevalence of CAM use in the past 12 months was assessed by using a questionnaire based on the European guidelines on CAM research, filled out by parents of children visiting pediatric oncology outpatient clinics of six academic hospitals in the Netherlands. The questionnaire consisted of 26 questions on the child’s clinical status, CAM use, and attitude towards communication and research on CAM therapies. One hundred and twenty-two of 288 respondents (42.4 %) reported CAM use. The most frequently used categories were homeopathy (18.8 %) and dietary supplements (11.5 %). Female gender and parental CAM use were significant predictors for the use of CAM (p?<?0.001). Only one third of the parents had discussed CAM use with their pediatric oncologist. More than 80 % of the respondents identified a need for information about CAM from their pediatrician and 85.7 % was positive towards research on CAM. Half of the parents were interested in participating in future CAM trials. Conclusion, with more than 40 % of parents of Dutch pediatric oncology patients providing complementary and alternative medicine to their child and with lacking evidence on efficacy and safety of most CAM modalities, there is a clear need for high-quality research in this field. This study shows that most parents have an open attitude towards CAM research and that almost half of the parents would consider participating in future CAM trials, paving the way for research on CAM and aiming for its evidence-based use in pediatric oncology.  相似文献

There is insufficient knowledge about the quality of life (QoL) among children after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). We recently reported an overall, good self-assessed QoL and health in 52 children who were three yr or more beyond SCT. The focus of this paper is the QoL as assessed by their parents, of whom 42 participated in the study. Using Swedish child health questionnaire (SCHQ)-PF50, parents rated their children's QoL lower on both the psychosocial (p<0.001) and physical summary scales (p<0.001) than the normative group of parents of children without chronic disease. Although essentially following each other, parent scores tended to be lower than children's own SCHQ-CF87 scores, particularly in the domains 'role socially due to physical limitations' (p<0.01) and 'self-esteem' (p<0.05). In the 'bodily pain' domain, patients' and parents' low scores agreed. The child's condition had a greater impact on parents' emotional situation than in the norm population (p<0.001). The severity of the child's physician-rated late effects (p<0.05) or of self-assessed subjective symptoms (p<0.01-0.05) was associated with a lower parental rating of the child's QoL. High Lansky or Karnofsky scores corresponded, respectively, to higher psychosocial (p<0.05) and physical (p<0.05) summary scores. It is concluded that as children, parents, and clinicians do not necessarily adopt similar views of a child's illness and of its impact on the child's life, clarity with regard to who is responsible for assessing the child's QoL is crucial when interpreting pediatric QoL studies.  相似文献

Introduction

Numerous studies have been done about the impact of the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder on the parents’ quality of life and the family as a whole. Confronting child suffering, day-to-day disability management and difficulties in integrating the child have an impact on the physical and mental well-being of parents. Parenting with a child suffering from a disability requires significant cognitive, emotional and behavioral adjustments by the parents. New knowledge in this field would make possible to adjust as much as possible the therapeutic management, in particular in the accompaniment of parents experience and parenting role. The main objective of this study is to identify links between coping strategies of parents to deal with the stressful events induced by the child's disability and their sense of parental competence. The second objective is to observe whether the integration of parents into the therapeutic management of the child has an impact on well-being.

Method

Thirty-three parents of children with autism spectrum disorder completed the WCC-R, PANAS, QAECEP and ASR. We have studied the links between coping strategies adopted by parents to deal with the stressful events induced by the child's disability and their sense of parental competence, a factor influencing their subjective well-being. We were interested in the consequences of the integration by the professional team of the parent in the care of the child on the feeling of parental competence.

Results

Coping strategies centered on emotions disrupt feelings of parental satisfaction. In addition, parents who are satisfied with their role tend to express a better sense of subjective well-being and parental skill than the less satisfied parents. Finally, the integration of the parent in the child care process promotes the sense of parental competence.

Conclusion

It seems important to note that the better the feeling of parental competence, the less the depressive symptomatology is high. The results confirm the need for professional teams in charge of the autism spectrum disorder child to integrate, support and help parents in their parenting role. This support allows them to develop a good sense of parental competence and fosters their sense of well-being.  相似文献

Background

A number of children are unable to comply with an MRI procedure and require general anesthetic. However, we lack information about which factors are associated with MRI compliance in young children.

Objective

To determine the strongest predictors of MRI compliance, focusing on variables that can be easily rated by patients’ parents.

Materials and methods

A sample of 205 children ages 3–11 years (mean age 6.6 years) who were at risk of non-compliance were recruited from a children’s hospital. Their parents completed a behavior assessment scale for children as well as a questionnaire that assessed their expectations of compliance and perception of their child’s typical medical compliance. The children subsequently completed a mock MRI with an educational play therapist and a clinical MRI, with the quality of the scan scored by the MRI technologist.

Results

Overall, 88.3% of children complied with the clinical scan and achieved diagnostic images, with age unrelated to compliance in this well-prepared patient group. The strongest predictors of MRI compliance were parental expectations and ratings of how well the child typically copes with medical procedures. Non-compliance was related to child attention problems and to poor adaptability among children. A total of 64 preschool-age children (91.4%) and 110 school-age children (95.7%) were correctly classified as compliant or non-compliant based on these predictor variables.

Conclusion

A child’s temperament, medical experiences and parental expectations provide important information in predicting which children successfully comply with an MRI procedure and which require general anesthesia. Further study is needed to explore the utility of these variables in predicting compliance at sites that do not have access to an MRI simulator.  相似文献

Background: Undue parental fear of fever in children was termed “fever phobia” by Schmitt following a survey in the USA in 1980. In 2000, Crocetti et al. conducted the same survey and concluded that fever phobia existed even 20 years later. In this study, we explore differences in fever phobia between these two US populations and a Japanese sample, and determine whether parents of a single child or those whose child was previously hospitalized or had a febrile seizure report greater anxiety about fever. Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to parents of children who visited a pediatric outpatient clinic in Juntendo University Nerima Hospital between 19 and 30 November 2007. Results: Data was obtained from 211 parents who agreed to participate in the study. Compared with much smaller proportions reported in the two previous studies, 62% of caregivers considered a temperature below 37.8°C to be a fever, although less than half of parents reported that they were “very worried” about fever. Over 90% identified doctors and nurses as their primary information source. In contrast to 7% of parents in the US studies, almost no parents reported that temperatures could rise to or above 43.3°C if fever was left untreated; however, 63% of parents stated that they would visit a hospital. Conclusions: Fever phobia exists on both sides of the border, and while caregivers in Japan appear to have a more accurate understanding of fever, they are more likely to rely on health‐care professionals to manage the condition.  相似文献
