Current status and possibilities of distant education in medicine

Author analyses the concept and methods of distance education. The definition of distance education consist of geographic separation of the learner and the teacher, the high level of educational organisation, the use of modern technology for communication with interactivity. Before the widespread use of electronic communications for teaching and learning, the conventional method for distance education was the books and postal service. Since the mid 1980's the attention shifted to the computer technology and computer networks the internet is radically different with previous electronic media. Pfaffenberger estimated in 1994, that by 1998 about 100 million people would have access to the Internet. The web servers gives a multimedia environment, which potencially can provide a truely integrated teaching and learning system to educators worldwide.

Therefore, the following chapter begins with an overview of the country's sociopolitical condition and modes of schooling. Next, attention is directed at provisions for the education of children ages three through six. Subsequently, the preparation of teachers of young children is described in some detail.     

What factors are related to understanding a stereoscopic 3D diabetes educational video in seniors?

Abstract

The rise of three-dimensional imaging technology and products offers a new avenue for patient education to older adults. This study investigated older adults’ perception of a three-dimensional health education video on diabetes, and factors associated with understanding the video. Twenty-one older adults without a history of diabetes watched a short diabetes educational video on a stereoscopic display. They perceived the video as helpful, valuable, and exciting, but too fast. Better understanding of the video is associated with having higher background knowledge of diabetes and greater vocabulary. Ethnicity is also a potential factor. Older adults may choose narrative information over graphic information to process a three-dimensional multimedia presentation.     

Information technology in medical education: a nationwide project on the opportunities of the new technology

CONTEXT: The aim of the national "IT Culture in Medical Education" project in Finland is to enhance the opportunities new technology may provide for medical education. The project focuses on attitudes towards information technology (IT) and on its current use among teachers and students. METHOD: This survey was part of a Finnish nationwide project in medical education. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire designed to gather information about IT use in medical education, sent to teachers and students. The questions were 5-point Likert-type. The participants were medical teachers (n=196) and medical students (n=392) at two medical schools. RESULTS: In both universities, it appeared that medical teachers and students had a very positive attitude toward the advances in modern technology. In addition to the favourable attitudes, computer-related technology was also widely applied. Teachers, however, used information technology more in their research work than in teaching. CONCLUSIONS: The results pose challenges to medical education and underline the importance of educational and psychological knowledge in combination with new technical skills.     

现代远程教育的特点及其在继续医学教育中的作用

随着信息技术、特别是网络技术和多媒体技术的飞速发展,以网上交互式学习为主要特征的现代远程教育在中国得到了巨大发展,已成为我国大众高等教育的重要组成部分。本文分析了现代远程教育所具有的开放性、交互性、自主性和教育性等基本特点,并着重阐述了现代远程教育方式在实施继续医学教育中的积极作用,为继续医学教育的管理者提供参考。
