Soil radon monitoring in the Krsko Basin, Slovenia.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In order to support the safe operation of the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant (Westinghouse, 676 MWe PWR), the seismotectonic structure of the Krsko basin has been thoroughly investigated. As part of a wider study, a study on radon in soil gas was started in April 1999. Combined barasol detectors buried in six boreholes, two along the Orlica fault and four on either side of it, measure and record radon activity, temperature and pressure every 60 min. The results have been evaluated and the possibility of a correlation with seismic activity is discussed. Correlation between radon concentration and barometric pressure has been observed for all barasols. Preliminary results show that, at one location, the correlation coefficient between radon and barometric pressure changed sign before earthquakes.  相似文献

Three different methodologies were used to measure Radon (222Rn) in soil, based on both passive and active detection system. The first technique consisted of solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTD), CR-39 type, and allowed integrated measurements. The second one consisted of a portable device for short time measurements. The last consisted of a continuous measurement device for extended monitoring, placed in selected sites. Soil 222Rn activity was measured together with soil Thoron (220Rn) and soil carbon dioxide (CO2) efflux, and it was compared with the content of radionuclides in the rocks. Two different soil–gas horizontal transects were investigated across the Pernicana fault system (NE flank of Mount Etna), from November 2006 to April 2007. The results obtained with the three methodologies are in a general agreement with each other and reflect the tectonic settings of the investigated study area. The lowest 222Rn values were recorded just on the fault plane, and relatively higher values were recorded a few tens of meters from the fault axis on both of its sides. This pattern could be explained as a dilution effect resulting from high rates of soil CO2 efflux. Time variations of 222Rn activity were mostly linked to atmospheric influences, whereas no significant correlation with the volcanic activity was observed. In order to further investigate regional radon distributions, spot measurements were made to identify sites having high Rn emissions that could subsequently be monitored for temporal radon variations. SSNTD measurements allow for extended-duration monitoring of a relatively large number of sites, although with some loss of temporal resolution due to their long integration time. Continuous monitoring probes are optimal for detailed time monitoring, but because of their expense, they can best be used to complement the information acquired with SSNTD in a network of monitored sites.  相似文献

The activity concentration of radon in the environment can vary over five orders of magnitude. Radon and its progenies thus concern all people involved in radiation protection as well as in low-level experiments. In the German radon reference chamber at the PTB, radon and its progenies are measured with different systems for alpha- and gamma-spectrometry with the full set of environmental parameters, e.g. temperature, humidity and aerosol concentration being controlled. Control of air pressure is also possible by use of an extention chamber. The sampling and measuring technique for radon and its short-lived progenies at the German radon reference chamber are the basis for fundamental studies with regard to the understanding of the equilibrium factor and the unattached fraction of progenies. The facility also serves for the calibration of radon progeny detectors.  相似文献

A high-purity germanium detector has been used to measure the abundance of radium (Ra), thorium (Th) and potassium (K) in building materials used in Sicilian dwellings. The measurements were performed to evaluate which material was suitable for the construction of an enclosure, which would have a low background emission. The materials examined in this work showed concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K dramatically variable depending on the lithologies, particularly in the case of blocks, sands and aggregates commonly used in building materials in Sicily. The results are discussed and a criterion is indicated to reduce the radiation dose to humans. Since radon inlet is a major health problem, all the radiometric data and the geochemical features have been used to determine the radon exhalation, which arises from the disintegration of 226Ra in soils and walls of houses. From our experimental data it can be seen out that one of the geochemical parameters, Total Alkali (TA), may be an appropriate index to select materials of low radiological risk.  相似文献

An international intercomparison of integrating detectors was conducted at NIRS (National Institute of Radiological Science, Japan) with a 24.4 m3 inner volume walk-in radon chamber that has systems to control radon concentration, temperature and humidity.During the first intercomparison (05.2007) four groups participated from four countries and for the second intercomparison (10.2007) 17 participants were involved from 11 countries.Most of detectors are in good agreement with each other when compared to the radon level provided by the radon chamber. It appeared that the 70% of detectors are unified within the 20% margin of uncertainty.  相似文献

An analysis of 10-year radon progeny data, provided by the Spanish automatic radiological surveillance network, in relation to meteorology is presented. Results show great spatial variability depending mainly on the station location and thus, the surrounding radon exhalation rate. Hourly averages show the typical diurnal cycle with an early morning maximum and a minimum at noon, except for one mountain station, which shows an inverse behaviour. Monthly averaged values show lower concentrations during months with higher atmospheric instability.  相似文献

From the point of view of indoor radon activity concentrations, a country is characterized correctly by two parameters (GM and GSD) of a lognormal distribution if and only if hypothesis tests do not reject the distribution of the local radon activity concentrations as a lognormal one. The authors introduce a way to obtain an empirical distribution using a stratum system covering almost the whole country and in each stratum the lognormal model is acceptable according to hypothesis tests. The sample for the analysis is provided by the measurement of radon level in 15,619 Hungarian homes.  相似文献

Simulation of the skim-off method for radon measurement by activated charcoal has been carried out by the finite elements method. The variation of radon concentration with peak appearance has been simulated. The thickness of the layer of charcoal removed after exposure and the time of peak appearance have been varied. For the charcoal and canister geometry used, the best results were found when the thickness of the layer removed was 1.72 mm.  相似文献

A radon detector with LR-115 nuclear track film was constructed for radon concentration measurements in soil. Temporal radon variations, as well as the barometric pressure, precipitation and temperature were measured for two years. Negative correlation between radon concentration in soil and barometric pressure was found. For some of the recorded earthquakes that occurred during the observation period, soil radon anomalies may be noticed one month before the quakes.  相似文献

The variation of the alpha radioactivity in the air near the ground and the ground-level total gamma radiation has been monitored in North-eastern Greece over several days. Meteorological information regarding the temperature of the air and humidity has been simultaneously recorded. The alpha-radioactivity shows a periodic diurnal variation with a peak in the morning followed by a decrease in the afternoon; then, the variation rises again to the peak the next morning. The variation of the ground gamma-radiation follows that of the air alpha-radioactivity. Furthermore, their significant dependence on the air temperature and humidity is confirmed, rising with an increase in humidity and a decrease in temperature. Hence, a mathematical function has been developed to describe the diurnal variation of the alpha-radioactivity in terms of the ground-level gamma-radiation and the meteorological variables of temperature and humidity.  相似文献

Unenhanced helical CT has emerged as the imaging technique of choice for the investigation of patients presenting with acute flank pain and suspected nephroureteric stone disease. There are several signs identifiable on unenhanced CT that support a diagnosis of stone disease. However, there are many pitfalls, that may confound a correct diagnosis. Some of the common pitfalls, together with methods to avoid such occurrences, will be discussed. MRI information is widely used for the monitoring of thermal therapies, such as laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy (LITT). However, a detailed knowledge about the relationship between time/temperature exposure and resulting tissue thermal damage is needed to estimate the lesion extent. The aims of this work were to model the thermal response of laser-irradiated tissue and to assess the value of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) for tumor therapy planning and monitoring. MCS yielded true 3D distributions of laser-induced temperature and thermal damage. These results were compared with 2D MR thermometry data from in vitro experiments performed on animal liver tissue over an ordinary range of laser powers (10-25 W) and irradiation times (5-25 min). Clinical reference data were available from MR-guided liver LITT procedures. MCS correctly predicted the shape of temperature and damage distributions. The quantitative agreement between simulated and measured lesion diameters was within 10% and 15% for the in vitro and in vivo cases, respectively. The simulated 53 degrees C isotherm best estimated the boundary of the final thermal damage (6% variance). This study shows that MCS of interstitial laser coagulation provides unique information that can be of use in the empirical correlation of temperature with thermal damage, and can assist greatly in thermal treatment planning and monitoring.  相似文献

Forensic and archaeological examinations of human skeletons can provide us with evidence of violence. In this paper, we present the patterns of two cranial lesions found on an adult male (T173) buried in a grave in the necropolis ‘Isolato 96’, Messina, Sicily, dating back to the Roman Empire (1st century BC - 1st century AD). The skull reveals two perimortem traumatic lesions, one produced by a sharp object on the right parietal bone and the other one on the left parietal bone, presumably the result of a fall. The interpretation of fracture patterns found in this cranium are an illustration of how forensic approaches can be applied with great benefit to archaeological specimens.  相似文献

To better understand the influence of air parameters such as pressure, humidity and temperature on the counting efficiency of a radon monitor based on solid state silicon detectors and radon daughter electrostatic collection, a number of experimental and theoretical studies have been performed. This study has been carried out using a multiparameter acquisition system used to monitor radon, temperature, pressure and relative humidity. Results show that air humidity and temperature inside the cell influence radon daughter collection in a significant way. For the tested cell, a decrease of the 218Po counting efficiency vs. humidity and temperature increase was measured in the ranges from 10% to 90% and from 15 degrees C to 35 degrees C, respectively. These effects were also theoretically studied by using Monte-Carlo software, which takes into account electrostatic collection of radon daughters in the cell, by considering the recombination process as a function of climatic parameters. A satisfactory agreement was obtained between experimental measurements and theoretical calculations.  相似文献

This brief report describes the case of a 20-year-old man who was stabbed in the left flank. He underwent triple contrast helical CT of the abdomen and pelvis that showed a hyperdense focus in the area of the stab wound. This structure was a chip fracture of pelvis, but was misinterpreted as contrast extravasation, and the patient underwent negative exploratory laparotomy.  相似文献
