1. Thirteen normo-cholesterolaemic male students consumed one 450 g can of baked beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) in tomato sauce, daily, for 14 d as part of their normal diet. After a 14 d washout period, eleven of the students went on to consume one 440 g can of spaghetti in tomato sauce, daily, for 14 d. 2. Fasting blood samples were taken frequently for measurement of plasma cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, triacylglycerols, glucose, insulin and C-peptide. Diet diaries (3 d) were completed by the subjects during each period. 3. Consumption of beans and spaghetti led to a significant reduction in the amount of fat eaten daily (P less than 0.05). Bean consumption also resulted in significant increases in protein, fibre and sugar intakes (P less than 0.02, P less than 0.001 and P less than 0.05 respectively). 4. During the bean-eating period the mean total plasma cholesterol level of the students fell significantly from 5.1 to 4.5 mmol/l (P less than 0.02). No reduction in plasma cholesterol occurred during the spaghetti-eating period. 5. HDL-cholesterol levels fell significantly during both periods (P less than 0.001), but HDL:total cholesterol ratio was significantly reduced only during the spaghetti-eating period (P less than 0.001). Neither beans nor spaghetti affected triacylglycerol, insulin or C-peptide levels. 6. The benefits of a legume-rich diet are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of two low fat diets with differing ratios of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids (P/S) on blood lipids, lipoproteins (LP), and apolipoproteins (Apo) were studied in 23 adult men, 30-60 years old, using a crossover design. Both test diets had 25% fat calories with either a P/S of 0.3 (Diet 1) or a P/S of 1.0 (Diet 2) and equivalent amounts of cholesterol. The study consisted of four periods: a 5-week prestudy on self-selected diet (SS), two 6-week test diet periods followed by a second 5-week post-study period on the SS diet. When compared with the SS diet, Diet 2 lowered the mean plasma total cholesterol (TC) by about 20% (P less than 0.01). Low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol was also decreased by about 18% by Diet 2 (P less than 0.01). The high P/S diet did not cause a change in total cholesterol in the high density lipoprotein (HDL) subclass2 (HDL2) when compared to the SS diet. Levels of triglycerides (TG) were slightly reduced in HDL2 but showed a greater reduction in HDL3 in both diets. Phospholipids (PL) were significantly reduced in HDL2 and in HDL3, but the reduction in HDL3 PL was not statistically significant. Apo A-I levels were not changed by either diet when compared with the SS diet, but Apo A-II levels of HDL2 and HDL3 were significantly decreased by the low fat diets, and there was no P/S effect. No other consistent changes in apoprotein levels occurred. Our data suggest that, in men with normal lipid levels, practical dietary changes involving a moderate increase in P/S from 0.3 to 1.0 in a low fat, low cholesterol diet do influence lipoprotein composition and apoprotein distribution in a short time. The reduction in cholesterol in total lipid composition and in LDL lipids which accompanied the reduction of dietary fat and cholesterol are considered to be beneficial.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine, in free-living adults eating self-selected diets, the effects on plasma cholesterol of substituting saturated fat rich foods with either n-6 polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fat rich foods while at the same time adhering to a total fat intake of 30-33% of dietary energy. DESIGN: Two randomised crossover trials. SETTING: General community. SUBJECTS: Volunteer sample of healthy free-living nutrition students at the University of Otago. Trial I, n=29; and trial II, n=42. INTERVENTIONS: In trials I and II participants were asked to follow for 2(1/2) weeks a diet high in saturated fat yet with a total fat content that conformed to nutrition recommendations (30-33% energy). During the 2(1/2) week comparison diet, saturated fat rich foods were replaced with foods rich in n-6 polyunsaturated fats (trial I) whereas in trial II the replacement foods were rich in monounsaturated fats. Participants were asked to maintain a total fat intake of 30-33% of energy on all diets. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Energy and nutrient intakes, plasma triglyceride fatty acids, and plasma cholesterol. RESULTS: When replacing saturated fat with either n-6 polyunsaturated fat or monounsaturated fat, total fat intakes decreased by 2.9% energy and 5.1% energy, respectively. Replacing saturated fat with n-6 polyunsaturated fat (trial I) lowered plasma total cholesterol by 19% [from 4.87 (0.88) to 3.94 (0.92) mmol/l, mean (s.d.)], low density lipoprotein cholesterol by 22% [from 2.87 (0.75) to 2.24 (0.67) mmol/l], and high density lipoprotein cholesterol by 14% [from 1.39 (0.36) to 1.19 (0.34) mmol/l], whereas replacing saturated fat with monounsaturated fat (trial II) decreased total cholesterol by 12%, low density lipoprotein cholesterol by 15%, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol by 4%, respectively. The change in the ratio of total to high density lipoprotein cholesterol was similar during trial I and trial II. CONCLUSIONS: Young adults are very responsive to dietary-induced changes in plasma cholesterol even when an isocaloric replacement of saturated fat with n-6 polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fat is not achieved. Replacing saturated fat with either n-6 polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fat is equally efficacious at reducing the total to high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship of instant coffee and brewed coffee with serum lipids and lipoproteins in Japanese men. METHODS: Study subjects were 4587 male self-defense officials aged 48-56 years who had a preretirement health examination at one of the three hospitals of the Self-Defense Forces from October 1986 to December 1992. A self-administered questionnaire ascertained lifestyle characteristics including consumption of a limited number of foods and beverages by all of the men. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol were measured, and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels were calculated from the values of TC, TG, and HDL cholesterol. RESULTS: While the consumption of brewed coffee was unrelated to any parameter of serum lipids and lipoproteins, instant coffee consumption showed a highly significant positive association with serum LDL cholesterol levels and an inverse association with serum TG levels. After adjustment for body mass index, smoking, alcohol use, green tea consumption, rank, and hospital, for each cup of instant coffee per day, LDL cholesterol levels were 0.82 mg/dl (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.29-1.35) higher, and TG levels in a natural log-scale were 0.014 mg/dl (95% CI 0.006-0.022) lower. There was also a tendency for a positive association between instant coffee intake and serum TC levels (trend p = 0.09). HDL cholesterol levels were unrelated to instant coffee consumption. These associations did not change after additional adjustment for selected foods and beverages associated with serum lipids and lipoproteins. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that instant coffee, not brewed coffee, may be associated with raised levels of serum LDL cholesterol and decreased levels of serum TG.  相似文献

The role that diet plays in the management of plasma lipid levels is discussed in this review. It has long been recognized that saturated fatty acids and cholesterol raise the plasma cholesterol level whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids lower it. Recently, the effects of other dietary constituents in the management of plasma lipid levels have been established. In particular, monounsaturated fatty acids, soluble fiber, and vegetarian diets favorably affect plasma lipid levels. Overweight and obesity adversely affect plasma lipid levels. Omega-3 fatty acids are hypotriglyceridemic, and high carbohydrate diets low in saturated fatty acids are hypocholesterolemic. Further work is required to establish the long-term consequences of alcohol and coffee consumption on the plasma lipid response. A variety of alternative dietary strategies can be employed in conjunction with traditional dietary recommendations (i.e., reduce total fat, especially saturated fatty acids and dietary cholesterol) for the management of plasma lipid levels. The expected plasma total cholesterol (specifically low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol) reduction is approximately 10% to 20% when dietary saturated fatty acids and cholesterol are decreased to less than or equal to 7% of calories and less than or equal to 200 mg of cholesterol per day. Further dietary modifications, such as increasing soluble fiber, may lead to additional reductions of 1% to 10% in plasma total cholesterol.  相似文献

Semipurified diets containing 10% kilocalories from either safflower oil (SO), corn oil (CO), olive oil (OO) or palm oil (PO) were fed to weanling male rats for 2 weeks. The effects of dietary fat saturation on plasma lipids and lipoproteins were: 1) Nonfasted plasma cholesterol concentration was higher in rats fed OO (mean +/- SEM = 81.0 +/- 2.9 mg/dl) vs. CO (67.5 +/- 2.9); 2) plasma chylomicron cholesterol concentration was higher in rats fed OO vs. SO and CO, with PO values in between; and 3) the cholesterol concentration of plasma very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) did not differ among groups. The effects of dietary fat saturation on hepatic lipoproteins (determined by liver perfusion techniques) were: 1) hepatic higher density lipoprotein (d = 1.006-1.21 g/ml) cholesterol production was greater in rats fed SO and CO vs. PO [19.1 +/- 1.2, 17.2 +/- 0.8 and 13.7 +/- 1.6 micrograms/(g liver X 1.5 hour), respectively]; 2) there was no difference in hepatic VLDL cholesterol production among groups; and 3) the ratio of cholesterol to protein of hepatic VLDL and the higher density lipoprotein fraction was higher in rats fed diets rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids versus saturated fatty acids. Dietary fat saturation had no effect on carcass and liver cholesterol concentrations. Since differences in hepatic lipoprotein production were not reflected in plasma lipoprotein patterns, these results suggest that extrahepatic lipoprotein metabolism differs in rats fed diets containing fatty acids of varying saturation.  相似文献

In recent years there has been increasing interest in the potential beneficial effects of probiotic bacteria, particularly concerning their immune-modulating effects. Considering the involvement of free radicals in immunological processes, we tried to verify and compare the effects of probiotic (Lactobacillus casei) and conventional yoghurt on antioxidant and oxidant parameters in plasma of humans. In this study female volunteers consumed 100 g/day of probiotic (n = 17) or conventional yoghurt (n = 16) for two weeks (T1-T2) and 200 g/day for another two weeks (T2-T3). A wash-out phase lasting two weeks followed. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), albumin, and bilirubin were determined photometrically, uric acid was determined by enzymatic methods, and vitamin E, carotenoids, malondialdehyde (MDA), and conjugated dienes (CD) were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In the period of continuous yoghurt intake (T1-T3), mean concentrations of the antioxidants vitamin E, lycopene, and zeaxanthin decreased significantly (p < 0.01) in the probiotic and in the control group. The average concentrations of lutein, beta-carotene, albumin, uric acid, and bilirubin decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in the probiotic group, only. These alterations led to a significant (p < 0.001) decrease of the average TAC values during the period T1-T3 in both tested groups. In the interval of daily yoghurt consumption (T1-T3) the mean plasma levels of oxidant parameters MDA and CD increased significantly in the probiotic (MDA: p < 0.01; CD: p < 0.001) and the control group (CD: p < 0.01). The average activity of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) was quite constant throughout the study in both groups. The mean activities of GSH-Px and catalase decreased significantly (p < 0.001) in the probiotic group, only after consuming yoghurt daily for four weeks (T1-T3). Although several parameters changed significantly during the study, no significant differences were observed between both investigated groups. Therefore, the results indicate a possible influence of both probiotic and conventional yoghurt on the plasma levels of antioxidant and oxidant parameters.  相似文献

Plasma lipoproteins and fat metabolites were measured before and during the first five post-operative days in patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery of moderate severity. They received nutrition as total parenteral nutrition (TPN) or 4% dextrose saline (D S ) or isotonic aminoacids (IAA). Surgery caused an immediate fall in total and very low density lipoprotein triglyceride and total high density lipoprotein cholesterol but a rise in the high density lipoprotein subfraction 2 cholesterol. The increase in total triglyceride after 5 post-operative days was due principally to changes in triglyceride not carried by very low density lipoprotein and was related to the type of nutrition provided. There was no evidence of impaired intra-vascular lipolysis.  相似文献

The effect of dietary fatty acid composition on plasma lipids and eicosanoid production was studied in normolipidemic men. Approximately 75% of the fat in the diet was provided by a mixture of fats (MF) during the 6-d pre and postperiods and either canola oil (CO) or sunflower oil (SO) during the two 18-d experimental periods. Saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids provided 14%, 15%, and 7%; 5%, 20%, and 10%; and 7%, 7%, and 22%, respectively, of total dietary energy in the MF, CO, and SO diets, respectively. The CO and SO diets produced similar decreases in plasma total (20% and 15%, respectively) and low-density lipoprotein (25% and 21%, respectively) cholesterol. Plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations were not altered by either fat source. Bleeding time was longer and in vivo 1-keto-PGF1 alpha production was greater (p less than 0.05) when on the CO diet than when on the MF diet. The hypocholesterolemic and antithrombotic effects of the CO diet were equivalent to those of the SO diet.  相似文献

Dietary fat has been incriminated as a positive risk factor for the development of neoplasia in human populations. We used adipose tissue fatty acid analysis as an index of dietary fat intake to study the association between dietary fat and immune function in a group of 94 free-living American males (avg age 47 years). Immunocompetence was tested by a battery of T- and B-lymphocyte stimulation tests and also by natural killer (NK) cell activity. Correlations were sought between fatty acid composition, plasma lipids, and immune responsivity. The degree of unsaturation of the diet over a polysaturated-to-saturated fat ratio range of 0.54-1.01 had no predictable effect on the immune function. Stepwise regression analysis showed that the concentrations of plasma triglycerides and cholesterol and its subfractions did not explain any of the variance in the immune tests. Palmitic acid (16:0) was associated with 7% of the variance of the response to C. albicans and E. coli, perhaps through influencing B-cell activity. Stearic acid (18:0) was correlated negatively to concanavalin A responsivity (18% of the variance) and positively to NK activity (20% of the variance). If impaired in vitro immune function is a marker of increased risk for carcinogenesis, then our data do not support a role for dietary fat influencing in any systematic manner lymphocyte function in vitro, as reflected by proliferative response or NK activity. Further, plasma lipoproteins, in particular cholesterol levels, did not appear to affect any immune function test. It remains to be studied whether dietary fat, lipoproteins, or fat-soluble substances may influence membrane structure and function and prostaglandin formation as alternative pathways in the promotion of neoplasia.  相似文献

Oral contraceptive (OC) use and alcohol consumption have been shown to alter the levels of lipids and lipoproteins in the blood. The effect of alcohol consumption on levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-B, Apo-A1, the ratio of HDL cholesterol/total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol/LDL cholesterol, and the ratio of LDL cholesterol/LDL-B among normal healthy young women before initiation of oral contraceptives and after six months of oral contraceptive use are both described. Of primary interest is the mediating effect of alcohol consumption on the association between steroid usage and blood lipid values. At baseline, ethanol consumption was found to be positively associated with triglycerides, HDL-C, and Apo-A1 and negatively associated with LDL-C/LDL-B. After adjustment for several covariables, alcohol consumption was found to be positively associated with the increases in triglycerides and in Apo-A1 observed at 3 and 6 months after initiation of OCs. Since these two parameters are believed to have opposite relationships to cardiovascular disease, the effect of alcohol consumption remains uncertain.  相似文献

In a controlled feeding situation, male subjects were assigned to one of four treatment groups: low fat (31% of total kcal)/low cholesterol (193 mg/d) (LFLC), low fat/usual cholesterol (504 mg/d) (LFUC), usual fat (46% of total kcal)/low cholesterol (UFLC) and usual fat/usual cholesterol (UFUC) intake. For the first 2 wk of the 10-wk study all subjects consumed the UFUC diet. Subjects consumed experimental diets during wk 3-7 and resumed their customary intake during wk 8-10. Plasma total, high-density-lipoprotein (HDL), low-density-lipoprotein and very-low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides were determined weekly. A significant effect (P less than 0.05) of dietary fat on plasma total and HDL cholesterol was observed between the end of wk 2 and 7. Low fat intake resulted in 17 +/- 2 mg/dL lower total cholesterol and 10 +/- 1 mg/dL lower HDL cholesterol than the usual fat intake. Plasma lipids were not affected either by dietary cholesterol or by any interaction of dietary fat with cholesterol.  相似文献

There are studies suggesting that in young women strenuous physical activity and inadequate daily energy intake cause unfavorable changes in lipoprotein profile. However until know data concerning this issue are contradictory, possibly due to small number of participants. This study aimed at evaluation of lipoprotein profile in young men and women with different weekly physical activity together with their dietary habits. A total of 202 subjects volunteered to participate of the study--54 female and 56 male students of physical education and 46 female and 49 male students representing other specialization. Daily energy and macronutrient intakes were assessed using FOOD 2 computer program. Plasma TG, TC and HDL-C were assayed colorimetically using Randox commercial kits (Great Britain). It has been demonstrated that high physical activity adversely affects lipoprotein profile in young women characterized by higher TC and LDL-C in comparison with women with low physical activity and with men with high physical activity. The effect of high physical activity on plasma lipoproteins is equivocal. Active men are characterized by higher HDL, but also by higher frequency of unfavorable plasma TC and similar frequency of unfavorable plasma LDL-C C as compared with their less active counterparts. The mean daily energy intake in highly active men and women covered 82% and 72.2% recommended intake, respectively. It seems feasible that in both sexes high physical activity and inadequate energy intake brings about unfavorable changes in plasma lipoproteins.  相似文献

The effects of the American Association of Cereal Chemists coarse wheat bran fiber and exercise were evaluated in 20 males, aged 24 to 35 yr, and at least 10% above ideal weight. Thirteen of the subjects participated in a 4 mile walk-jog run program 3 times weekly. In a cross-over design with diets switched midway through the experiment, both the exercising and sedentary groups consumed isocaloric amounts of either white bread or white bread containing wheat bran (0.5 g/kg body weight). Plasma total and lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, body weights, and percentage body fats were determined at 0, 6, and 12 wk. No consistent effects were observed as a result of the wheat bran feeding on any of the parameters measured. Exercise training tended to decrease body weights and percentage body fats, and was associated with significantly increased (p less than 0.05) plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratios. After a rise in triglycerides at wk 6, a significant decline (p less than 0.05) back to base-line values was observed at wk 12 for the exercised subjects.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of probiotic capsules on plasma lipids. DESIGN: A randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm trial. SUBJECTS: Fifty-five normocholesterolemic subjects ages 18-36 (33 premenopausal women and 22 men). INTERVENTION: Each subject consumed either three probiotic capsules each containing a total of 10(9) colony-forming units Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum and 10-15 mg fructo-oligosaccharide or three placebo capsules daily for 2 months (men) or two menstrual cycles (women). Plasma lipids were measured before and following the intervention (during the early follicular phase for women). RESULTS: Plasma concentrations of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride were not altered by consumption of probiotic or placebo capsules and were not different between treatment groups following the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: These results do not support a beneficial effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus strain DDS-1 and Bifidobacterium longum strain UABL-14 on plasma lipids in normocholesterolemic young women and men. Exercise-induced changes in plasma lipids and lipoproteins   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Men and women who participate in vigorous endurance-type exercise generally have plasma lipid and lipoprotein profiles consistent with lower risk for coronary heart disease. The major differences from matched physically inactive controls appear to be a lower plasma triglyceride concentration and greater high-density lipoprotein mass, due to increased levels of the subfraction HDL2 and apoprotein A-I. Plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration is less likely to be lower than in the inactive controls. Exercise training studies suggest a lower threshold--of around 1,000 kcal per week of endurance-type exercise at moderate intensity--seems to be required to produce plasma lipid or lipoprotein changes. Above this level, dose-response relationship exists, with greater changes occurring up to an expenditure of 4,500 kcal per week. From the limited data available, it appears more difficult to change the plasma lipoprotein concentration in women by exercise training than in men. Modification of activity of enzymes involved in triglyceride and cholesterol synthesis, transport, and catabolism most likely mediates these exercise-induced changes.  相似文献

Background and aim  Epidemiological studies suggest that regular consumption of foods and beverages rich in flavonoids is associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular mortality. Cocoa, the main ingredient of chocolate, is rich in polyphenols. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of consumption of 50 g daily for 3 weeks of flavonoid-rich dark chocolate on lipoprotein oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo. In particular, levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), conjugated dienes, lipoperoxide and hydroperoxide in HDL and LDL before and after consumption of flavonoid-rich dark chocolate were assessed. The serum lipid profile was also studied. Methods and results  Ten healthy Italian-Caucasian volunteers were recruited without restriction as to age, gender, or socioeconomic status. Their BMI was between 21 and 26 kg/m2, and the subjects included men and premenopausal women. The study protocol was conducted in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki as revised in 2001, and all subjects gave written informed consent. TBARs concentrations, lipid hydroperoxides as determined using the FOX assay, and conjugate formation in HDL and in LDL were significantly decreased after 3 weeks of dark chocolate consumption with respect to the baseline values. To summarize, the present study showed favourable effects of chocolate consumption both on HDL cholesterol, and on some of the lipid peroxidation markers such as conjugated dienes, lipid hydroperoxides (FOX assay) and TBARS. Similar results were obtained with regard to LDL fractions. Our study also showed that 3 weeks consumption of dark chocolate might improve endothelial function in healthy humans and might exert a protective effect on the cardiovascular system.  相似文献

Effects of shellfish consumption on lipoproteins in normolipidemic men   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Eighteen normolipidemic males were fed six different species of shellfish; each shellfish was fed so that protein in shellfish equalled that in animal foods in the normal diet, with less than one-half of the amount of fat in animal foods allowed for preparation of the shellfish. Oyster, clam, crab, and mussel diets, low in cholesterol and high in n-3 fatty acids, lowered VLDL triglycerides and cholesterol and, except for the mussel diet, LDL and total cholesterol. Squid and shrimp diets, higher in cholesterol and lower in n-3 fatty acids, did not change the blood lipids. The ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol was decreased on the oyster and mussel diets. Oyster, mussel, and squid diets increased HDL2 cholesterol. Cholesterol absorption was decreased on the oyster, clam, and mussel diets. When consumed with moderate dietary fat restriction, oysters, clams, mussels, and crab appear to be useful in hypolipidemic diets for normolipidemic men.  相似文献

Rhesus monkeys (seven females and six males) were fed ad libitum a diet comparable to that consumed by humans, containing 25% by weight fat (40% of calories) and 0.15% cholesterol (0.3 mg/kcal) for 12 months (phase 1). From the 13th month all monkeys were continued on the diet while four females and three males were given 50% coffee as their fluid intake and the remainder were water controls (phase 2). Major changes in total plasma lipids and lipoprotein profiles occurred within 3 months and generally plateaued thereafter. Total plasma protein remained constant while total plasma cholesterol, phospholipids, triglycerides, and free fatty acid levels increased. After the initiation of coffee, there was no difference between the diet-water group and the diet-coffee group with respect to total protein and lipids in plasma. Total concentrations of plasma lipoproteins varied throughout the study. The pre-beta (very low density lipoproteins) fraction remained constant while the beta (low density lipoprotein) and alpha (high density lipoprotein) fractions, along with their major components, increased within 3 to 6 months, then fluctuated in absolute weight thereafter. The introduction of 50% coffee was without effect on the dynamic changes in these fractions as fluctuations were found in both groups and to the same magnitude. This leads the authors to suspect that such variations are "normal" or are in response to the diet per se. The atherogenic diet induced fatty streaks in the aortas of all monkeys to a greater extent in males than females. However, there were no gross differences in the quantity or distribution of the streaks between control and coffee-drinking monkeys.  相似文献

The effect of daily walking on body fat distribution was investigated using an electronic pedometer and ultrasonography. Subjects were 77 women, aged 31 to 72 years. They were divided into four groups according to the average number of steps they walked per day (I<7,500, 7,500 ≤II<10,000, 10,000 <III<12,500, 12,500 ≤IV). Subcutaneous fat in the trunk and limbs, and the minimum thickness of subcutaneous fat (Smin) and the maximum thickness of preperitoneal fat (Pmax) below the xiphoid process were measured by ultrasonography. Abdominal wall fat index (AFI) reflecting the intra-abdominal fat accumulation was obtained by dividing Pmax by Smin. Fat distribution was analyzed by ANCOVA, controlled for age, body mass index (BMI), percent body fat, and menopausal status. Energy and macronutrient intake were obtained through a nutritional survey. There were no significant differences in anthropometric variables, energy and macronutrient intake, and subcutaneous fat thickness in trunk and limbs. Pmax of Group I was significantly higher than Group IV. Furthermore, Group I showed significantly higher AFI than the other three Groups (II, III, IV). The results of this study suggested that women who walked less than 7,500 steps per day tend to have significantly increased intra-abdominal fat accumulation.  相似文献
