The natural radioactivity levels in soil and sediment samples of Firtina Valley have been determined. To our knowledge, there seems to be no information about radioactivity level in the Firtina Valley soils and sediments so far. For this reason, soil and sediment samples were collected along the Firtina Valley and analysis on the collected samples were carried out to determine 238U, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs radioisotopes using high purity germanium detector. The activity concentrations obtained for 226Ra, 214Pb, 214Bi, 228Ac, 208Tl, 40K and 137Cs are given in the unit of Bq/kg. The results have been compared with other radioactivity measurements in different country's soils and sediments. The radium equivalent activity (Raeq), the absorbed dose rate (D), the external hazard index (Hex), the annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE) and the annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE) were also calculated and compared with the international recommended values.  相似文献

Distributions of natural gamma-emitting radionuclides were determined in three soil profiles developed on Tertiary sedimentary materials in mountain landscapes of the Central Spanish Pyrenees. Radioisotope activities (Bq kg(-1)) lie in the range of 0-53 for 238U; 19-33 for 226Ra; 7-75 for 210Pb; 24-48 for 232Th and 335-562 for 40K. 238U and 210Pb activities show an important variability down the soil profiles. 238U was markedly depleted in all upper soil layers and highly enriched in lower layers of two soil profiles. 210Pb exhibits very dissimilar distribution patterns in all three soils. 226Ra and 232Th had quite uniform depth distributions. 40K showed depletion in both upper and lower layers in one soil profile but remained fairly constant in the other two profiles. 238U/226Ra activity ratios (ARs) have been used to assess equilibrium in the 238U decay chain and as indicators of edaphogenesis in the studied soil profiles. Maintenance of initial proportionality in the ratio of 232Th/238U activities has been assessed through ARs of their progenies. Additionally, a variety of soil properties were measured down the soil profiles. Among soils, variation in radionuclide activies may be due to differences in carbonate content, organic matter and/or grain size. In this environment, soil properties differently affect mobilization of natural radionuclides. The association of some radiologic properties with soil layers suggest a relationship between soil processes and radionuclide distribution.  相似文献

Intensification of agricultural production in south-central Chile since the 1970s has caused problems of increased soil erosion and associated soil degradation. These problems have prompted a shift from conventional tillage to no-till management practices. Faced with the need to establish the impact of this shift in soil management on rates of soil loss, the use of caesium-137 (137Cs) measurements has been explored. A novel procedure for using measurements of the 137Cs depth distribution to estimate rates of soil loss at a sampling point under the original conventional tillage and after the shift to no-till management has been developed. This procedure has been successfully applied to a study site at Buenos Aires farm near Carahue in the 9th region of Chile. The results obtained indicate that the shift from conventional tillage to no-till management has caused net rates of soil loss to decrease to about 40% of those existing under conventional tillage. This assessment of the impact of introducing no-till management at the study site must, however, be seen as provisional, since only a limited number of sampling points were used. A simplified procedure aimed at documenting the reduction in erosion rates at additional sampling points, based solely on measurements of the 137Cs inventory of bulk cores and the 137Cs activity in the upper part of the soil has been developed and successfully tested at the study site. Previous application of 137Cs measurements to estimate erosion rates has been limited to estimation of medium-term erosion rates during the period extending from the beginning of fallout receipt to the time of sampling. The procedures described in this paper, which permits estimation of the change in erosion rates associated with a shift in land management practices, must be seen as representing a novel application of 137Cs measurements in soil erosion investigations.  相似文献

Over the past 10 years, a number of studies have exploited the potential for using measurements of fallout 137Cs inventories to document rates and patterns of soil erosion on cultivated land and to estimate rates of overbank sedimentation on river floodplains. Traditional procedures for applying the 137Cs technique involve the collection of soil or sediment cores from a study site and their subsequent transfer to the laboratory for preparation and analysis by gamma spectrometry. Such procedures are time consuming and there may be a considerable delay before the results are available. It is therefore difficult to obtain preliminary results, which could be used to guide the development of an ongoing sampling programme. The use of in situ gamma spectrometry measurements to quantify 137Cs inventories in soils and sediments offers a number of potential advantages over traditional procedures. However, in order to derive a reliable estimate of the 137Cs inventory for a measurement point, it is necessary to take account of the attenuation of 137Cs gamma rays by the soil matrix and information on the depth distribution of 137Cs in the soil or sediment is therefore required. In the present study, empirical relationships between in situ measurements of 137Cs activity and total 137Cs inventories have been established for soils from a cultivated field and for floodplain sediments, based on information on the vertical distribution of 137Cs in the soils and sediments provided by the forward scattering ratio derived from the field measured spectra. These relationships have been used to estimate 137Cs inventories from in situ measurements of 137Cs activity at other locations.  相似文献

The common use of phosphate fertilizers NPK and amendments in sugar cane crops in Brazilian agriculture may increase the 226Ra, 232Th and 40K activity concentrations in soils and their availability for plants and human food chain. Thus, the main aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in soils and sugar cane crops in the Corumbataí river basin, São Paulo State, Brazil. The gamma spectrometry was utilized to measure the 226Ra, 232Th and 40K activity concentration in all samples. The soil-to-sugar cane transfer factors (TF) were quantified using the ratio between the radionuclide activity concentration in sugar cane and its activity concentration in soil. The results show that, although radionuclides incorporated in phosphate fertilizers and amendments are annually added in the sugar cane crops, if utilized in accordance with the recommended rates, their use does not lead to hazards levels in soils. The soil-to-sugar cane transfer of radionuclides occurred in the following order 40K>226Ra>232Th. Therefore, under these conditions, radionuclides intake through consumption of sugar is not hazardous to human health.  相似文献

In the frame of the international SOILSAMP project, funded and coordinated by the Italian Environmental Protection Agency, an agricultural area was established as a reference site suitable for performing soil sampling inter-comparison exercises. The reference site was characterized for trace element content in soil, in terms of the spatial and temporal variability of their mass fraction. Considering that the behaviour of long-lived radionuclides in soil can be expected to be similar to that of some stable trace elements and that the distribution of these trace elements in soil can simulate the distribution of radionuclides, the reference site characterised in term of trace elements, can be also used to compare the soil sampling strategies developed for radionuclide investigations.  相似文献

Various methods to determine 222Rn concentration in soil gas were tested at two sites with different soil types in a depth of about 1 m. They included instantaneous (spot), continuous (real-time) and time-averaging procedures. The first test site had a porous soil with high gravel content. At this site, radon concentrations obtained with the different methods agreed within the error limits of the procedures. The other site exhibited a largely impermeable clay soil and at this site, the measured radon concentrations differed up to a factor of two depending on the method. The applicability of the various procedures in the field is discussed.  相似文献

Pre-operational survey at Kalpakkam coast, indicated elevated gamma background radiation levels in the range of 100-4000 nGy h(-1) over the large tracts of the coastal sands due to the presence of pockets of monazite mineral in beach sands. In view of the prevalence of monazite, a systematic gamma spectrometric study of distribution of natural radionuclides in soil and beach sand samples collected from the terrestrial and coastal environment of Kalpakkam was performed and concentrations of primordial radionuclides such as 238U, 232Th and 40K and anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs were determined. The concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K in soil samples were 5-71, 15-776 and 200-854 Bq kg(-1) dry, respectively. In beach sand samples, 238U, 232Th and 40K contents varied in the range of 36-258, 352-3872 and 324-405 Bq kg(-1) dry, respectively. The total absorbed gamma dose rate in air due to the presence of 238U, 232Th and 40K in Kalpakkam soil samples varied between 24 and 556 nGy h(-1) with a mean of 103 nGy h(-1). The contribution to the total absorbed gamma dose rate in air in the decreasing order was due to the presence of 232Th (76.4%), followed by 40K (16.9%) and 238U (6.7%) in Kalpakkam soils. However, in beach areas of Kalpakkam, the presence of 232Th in beach sand contributed maximum (94.0%) to the total absorbed gamma dose rate in air followed by 238U (4.7%) and minimum contribution was by 40K (1.3%). 137Cs in Kalpakkam soils ranged from < or = 1.0 to 2.8 Bq kg(-1) dry, which was 1-3 order of magnitude less than the concentration of primordial radionuclides in soil.  相似文献

This study is aimed at the determination of the activity concentrations of naturally occuring and technologically enhanced levels of radiation in 34 representative soil samples that have been collected from an inshore oil field area which was found to have, in a previous study, the highest observed value of 226Ra concentration among 129 soil samples. The activity concentrations of 238U and 226Ra have been inferred from gamma-ray transitions associated with their decay progenies and measured using a hyper-pure germanium detector. Details of the sample preparation and the gamma-ray spectroscopic analysis techniques are presented, together with the values of the activity concentrations associated with the naturally occuring radionuclide chains for all the samples collected from NW Dukhan. Discrete-line, gamma-ray energy transitions from spectral lines ranging in energy from ~100 keV up to 2.6 MeV have been associated with characteristic decays of the various decay products within the 235.8U and 232Th radioactive decay chains. These data have been analyzed, under the assumption of secular equilibrium for the U and Th decay chains. Details of the sample preparation and the gamma-ray spectroscopic analysis techniques are presented. The weighted mean value of the activity concentrations of 226Ra in one of the samples was found to be around a factor of 2 higher than the values obtained in the previous study and approximately a factor of 10 higher than the accepted worldwide average value of 35 Bq/kg. The weighted mean values of the activity concentrations of 232Th and 40K were also deduced and found to be within the worldwide average values of 30 and 400 Bq/kg, respectively. Our previous study reported a value of 201.9±1.5Stat.±13Syst.Bq/kg for 226Ra in one sample and further investigation in the current work determined a measured value for 226Ra of 342.00±1.9Stat.±25Syst.Bq/kg in a sample taken from the same locality. This is significantly higher than all the other investigated soil samples in the current and previous works. Notably, the Th levels in the same sample are within the worldwide average expectations, implying that the increased 226Ra concentration arises from TENORM processes.  相似文献

The concentrations of 90Sr at different depth levels have been determined in 55 soils from 11 points at Biscay (Spain) by extracting this radionuclide from 30 g samples. It was measured by beta-counting after purification. The concentrations of 137Cs in the same soils are known from previous studies. Soils were also characterised by sampling depth, particle size analysis and the usual chemical parameters. The 91Sr activity concentrations in the studied soils ranged from 0.28 to 9.10 Bq/kg, with an average value of 2.85 Bq/kg. The more frequent behaviour in a depth profile is a continuous decrease of 90Sr. The dependence of 90Sr activities on soil parameters and 137Cs concentration are discussed by statistical methods, mainly by correlation coefficients, cluster analysis and non-linear regression of the accumulated radionuclide with depth. By this technique an estimation of fallout can be made. The ratio of the estimated deposition rate for both nuclides had values in the range from 0.72 to 5.82. The 222Rn emanation power of building materials, soil and rock samples is determined by collecting exhalated radon on activated charcoal. Median values are 0.2 for dry soils and stones, 0.06 for sand, 0.025 for bricks, 0.006 for ceramic tiles, 0.008 for mineral slag and 0.3 for gypsum. The emanation power of soil rises with water content, in accordance with literature. For water content above 10% the emanation power of soil is about twice as high as for dry soil.  相似文献

Natural radioactive materials under certain conditions can reach hazardous radiological levels. The natural radionuclide (238U, 232Th, 40K) contents of rock samples at various locations in the North Tushki area were investigated using gamma-spectrometric analysis. Estimates of the measured radionuclide content have been made for the absorbed dose rate of gamma radiation. The equivalent radium (Req) and the external hazard index (Hex) which resulted from the natural radionuclides in soil are also calculated and tabulated. The studied samples have been collected from various rock exposures in the North Tushki area. The distribution of major oxides, U and Th were studied. It is found that the enrichment and depletion of the major oxides are mainly due to the effect of hydrothermal alteration, which caused mobility of some major oxides, which increases some elements and decreases others. It is important to mention that the study area is far from the development region of the Tushki project and is only a local hazard. Therefore, additional regional studies of the Tushki Project area should be under taken to explore any unexpected environmental hazard due to the high concentration of the radioactive elements, which have been observed at its north boundary.  相似文献

Decomposition, a postmortem process including autolysis and putrefaction, is affected by many factors (e.g., humidity, microbial activity, soil properties). The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of soil type in decomposition process. Changes occurred in two intervals (3 and 6 months) were evaluated using a total of 32 Sus scrofa limbs by burying in four different types of soil (loamy, clayey, sandy and organic). The extremities in all soils had lost weight over time; however, mass loss was greater in loamy and organic soils in both intervals. Entomological findings were also assessed. Obtained findings of soil analysis and evaluation of decomposition were compatible. In conclusion, the present study revealed that soil properties and textures should be taken into account in evaluation of decomposition and estimating postmortem interval in crime scene investigation.  相似文献

Samples of sand and manufactured building materials collected from the Rawalpindi/Islamabad area have been analyzed for the primordial natural radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K using gamma-ray spectrometry. The uranium and thorium contents have also been determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The specific activities of these radionuclides in the samples are compared with those of the world averages for soil. The comparison shows that, of the nine samples analyzed, only the three brick samples have higher activities than the world averages for soil. The specific activities in these materials, having a radium equivalent activity of less than 370 Bq kg-1, when evaluated for radiological effects show that all materials meet the external gamma-ray dose limitation of 1.5 mSv y-1. The gamma-spectrometric and INAA techniques complemented each other well in this study.  相似文献

As a part of a broader study of the surface formations in maritime Antarctica, a preliminary survey on the content of radionuclides has been carried out in soils of Byers Peninsula, located in the western end of Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands. Data on natural and artificial radionuclides are very scarce in Antarctica and the studied soil samples can be representative of the maritime Antarctic environment. Byers Peninsula has an extensive presence of permafrost and an active layer, the studied soils being Criosols and Cryic Leptosols. A series of soil cores between 13 and 40 cm depth have been collected in different lithological and altitudinal contexts. In the southwestern sector of the peninsula, soils have been sampled in seven different sites along a transect on different geomorphological units from an upper marine platform (88 m above sea level) to a Holocene raised beach at an altitude of 24 m a.s.l. The parent materials are mainly Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous marine sandstones and conglomerates and Lower Cretaceous volcanoclastic materials. Individual samples have been obtained from the cores according to textural and colour criteria and analysed for (238)U, (226)Ra, (232)Th, (40)K and (137)Cs by gamma spectrometry. Radionuclides show variations in the depth profile as well as in the different morphoedaphic environments studied. Variability in some radionuclides seems to be related to mineralogy derived from parent materials as well as with cryogenic and soil processes affecting the depth distribution of the granulometric fractions and the organic matter.  相似文献

We examined differences in the radioactive characteristics among the main minerals forming granite materials. Using a non-toxic high-density agent, minerals were separated from rock (granite–gneiss) and soil (weathered granite) samples. The natural radioactivity (238U and 226Ra) and radon emanation fraction of the minerals were then studied by gamma-ray spectrometry. The radon emanation fractions (27–43%) of the minerals from the soil were much higher than those (0.6–4.6%) of the rock minerals. Additionally, the emanation fractions differed greatly among the minerals separated from both the bulk rock and soil. These results were discussed in terms of the differences of surface area and radium distribution in the mineral grains. It was noticeable that a higher emanation fraction than expected for quartz was commonly observed in the rock and soil samples. We then estimated the contribution of each constituent mineral to the total radon exhalation from the bulk samples. The result depended not only on the radon emanation fraction, but also on the 226Ra activity and the mineral content. Furthermore, using the obtained data, we also discussed the effect of grain size on radon emanation and why this has been reported to vary markedly in previous studies.  相似文献

The treatment of meniscal pathology has changed dramatically over the last decade. This change in treatment has been brought about by our increased knowledge of the functions of the human meniscus: force transmission, increase contact area, decrease contact stress, shock absorption, joint lubrication, nutrition of chondrocytes, and stabilization. Meniscal transplantation has been developed in an attempt to interrupt or retard the progressive joint deterioration that develops in the postmeniscectomy knee. The author's arthroscopically assisted technique for meniscal reconstruction using fresh frozen allograft tissue without disruption of the extensor mechanism or collateral ligaments is described. This technique emphasizes visualization of specific landmarks for each meniscal horn insertion site with creation of osseous tunnels at these corresponding sites to allow for anatomic placement of the meniscal inplant. Only if normal anatomy and kinematics is established can one assume that the transplanted meniscus will provide a beneficial function. The author's believe that the operation should be limited to a select group of individuals who meet specific inclusion criteria in study groups and investigational protocols until long-term results are determined.  相似文献

A nationwide inter-comparison exercise for the determination of activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in soil and building material was organized by the National Institute for Radiological Protection (NIRP), CDC, China. The primary purpose of this work was to assess the accuracy and precision of γ-spectrometry analyses. Activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were determined by gamma-ray spectrometry in accordance with established inter-comparison procedures. A total of 15 laboratories participated in this programme. All participants reported their comparison results for a total of 87 data sets for three nuclides in soil and building material. The overall measurement results of samples for inter-comparison showed a good agreement with the reference values, with nearly 87% of the participants producing acceptable results. Some influential factors in measurement comparisons are also discussed in this paper on the basis of reported results.  相似文献

241Pu activity measurements in coniferous forest soil samples from Poland are presented. The results were obtained in two ways: by alpha spectrometric remeasurements of the plutonium sources 3-4 years after their preparation (i.e. by the 241Am ingrowth) and by direct measurements of 241Pu using liquid scintillation (LS) spectrometry. Both methods gave consistent results. The maximum observed activity concentration obtained by the 241Am ingrowth was (254 +/- 43) Bq/kg, and by direct measurements it was (284 +/- 31) Bq/kg (the same sample, activities calculated for May 1, 1986). Enhanced levels of 241Pu were observed in all samples from the farthest north-eastern Poland. The estimated 241Pu maximum deposition from Chernobyl fallout in this area (sum of deposition for two examined layers of one site) was (1.025 +/- 0.110) kBq/m2. This will result after 70 years in an additional 241Am activity of about (30.1 +/- 3.2) Bq/m2. The average ratio for 241Pu to total 238,239,240Pu was of the order of 25. The obtained average Chernobyl ratios for 241Pu to 239,240Pu were about 86, and those for 241Pu to 238,239,240Pu were 56.  相似文献
