Light-optical and electron-microscopic investigations were made of the specialized conducting system of the rat heart at various times after vagotomy. The dynamics of the tissue and cellular changes are described. A polarographic method is suggested and can be recommended as a simple device for measuring the rates of oxidation of steroid hormones and xenobiotics. Certain ultrastructural characteristics of the ventricular myocardium ofRana ridibunda (lateral contacts, intercalated disks, mitochondria) were studied in the spring and fall by electron microscopy coupled with morphometric analysis. A method of obtaining antineuronal and antiglial immune sera is described. The results of a quantitative immunochemical analysis of antigens of neuronal and glial fractions of rat brain are given. The development of toxic manifestations in rats exposed to hyperoxia is accompanied by a significant decrease in the activity of erythrocytic superoxide dismutase (SOD). Incubation of hemolysates from control animals with H2O2 (10–3 M) or cumene peroxide (1.6\10–4 M) also led to a marked decrease in the initial SOD activity. The action of ouabain and cyclic AMP on the Ca-accumulating capacity and outflow of Ca2+ ions from loaded rat heart mitochondria was studied by the tetracycline probe method. In the course of the investigations no effect of ouabain on these processes was found. Cyclic AMP did not act on Ca binding by the mitochondrial membrane but it induced rapid liberation of Ca2+ from organelles loaded with these ions.Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Medico-Biological Faculty, N. Transformed lymphocytes obtained by stimulating lymph node cells of CBA mice with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) do not give the graft versus host reaction (GVHR) if injected into sublethally irradiated (CBA×C57BL/6) F1 hybrids. In a population of PHA-stimulated cells the GVHR was induced by small lymphocytes having the same concentration of antigens, detectable by antilymphocytic serum, as intact lymphocytes.Department of Immunology, Medico-Biological Faculty, N. A decrease in glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase activity in sarcoma C-45 was discovered during the period of its most rapid growth. Repeated injections of sarcolysin (1.2 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) caused a sharp decrease in the activity of both enzymes and a simultaneous decrease in the ratio between glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activities. An extract of cells of Ehrlich's ascites tumor inhibits the proliferative activity of its cells tissue specifically. The effect is expressed as a marked decrease in the number of dividing and DNA-synthesizing cells after injection of the extract. The mitotic index falls considerably as early as 2 h after the injection, reaches a minimum after 4–5 h, and returns to the control level again after 9–12 h.
