Both strength and endurance training have several positive effects on aging muscle and physical performance of middle‐aged and older adults, but their combination may compromise optimal adaptation. This study examined the possible interference of combined strength and endurance training on neuromuscular performance and skeletal muscle hypertrophy in previously untrained 40–67‐year‐old men. Maximal strength and muscle activation in the upper and lower extremities, maximal concentric power, aerobic capacity and muscle fiber size and distribution in the vastus lateralis muscle were measured before and after a 21‐week training period. Ninety‐six men [mean age 56 (SD 7) years] completed high‐intensity strength training (S) twice a week, endurance training (E) twice a week, combined training (SE) four times per week or served as controls (C). SE and S led to similar gains in one repetition maximum strength of the lower extremities [22 (9)% and 21 (8)%, P<0.001], whereas E and C showed minor changes. Cross‐sectional area of type II muscle fibers only increased in S [26 (22)%, P=0.002], while SE showed an inconsistent, non‐significant change [8 (35)%, P=0.73]. Combined training may interfere with muscle hypertrophy in aging men, despite similar gains in maximal strength between the strength and the combined training groups.  相似文献

This study compared running velocity, physiological responses, and perceived exertion during self-paced interval training bouts differing only in work bout duration. Twelve well-trained runners (nine males, three females, 28+/-5 years, VO2 max 65+/-6 mL min(-1) kg(-1)) performed preliminary testing followed by four "high-intensity" interval sessions (Latin squares, 1 session week(-1) over 4 weeks) consisting of 24 x 1, 12 x 2, 6 x 4, or 4 x 6-min running bouts with a 1:1 work-to-rest interval (total session duration 48 min). The average running velocity decreased (93%, 88%, 86%, 84% vVO2 max, P < 0.01) with increasing work duration. Peak VO2 averaged about 92+/-4% of VO2 max for 2-, 4-, and 6-min intervals compared with only 82+/-5% for 1-min bouts (P < 0.001). Six of 12 athletes achieved their highest average VO2 and heart rate during 4-min intervals. The average RPEpeak (rating scale of perceived exertion) was approximately 17+/-1 for all four interval sessions. RPE increased by 2-4 U during an interval training session. The mean lactate concentration was similar across sessions (4.3+/-1.1-4.6+/-1.5 mmol L(-1)). Under self-paced conditions, well-trained runners perform "high-intensity" intervals at an RPE of approximately 17, independent of interval duration. The optimal interval duration for eliciting a high physiological load is 3-5 min under these training conditions. Increases in RPE during an interval bout are not associated with increasing blood lactate concentration.  相似文献

Exercise is a well‐established part of rehabilitation for people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), and it has been hypothesized to stimulate an anti‐inflammatory environment that might be disease modifying. Yet, investigations on exercise‐induced immune responses are scarce and generally not paying attention to the medical treatments of the patient. At present, PwMS are routinely enrolled in immunosuppressive medication, but exercise‐induced immunomodulatory effects have not been investigated under these circumstances. The objective of this study was to investigate the acute and chronic cytokines responses to resistance exercise training in medicated PwMS. Thirty‐five people with relapsing‐remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) treated with interferon (IFN)‐β, were randomized to a 24‐week progressive resistance training (PRT) or control group. Plasma interleukin (IL)‐1β, IL‐4, IL‐10, IL‐17F, IL‐23, tumor necrosis factor‐α and IFN‐γ were measured before and after 24 weeks of PRT. The acute effect was evaluated following standardized single‐bout resistance exercise in the untrained and the trained state. No changes were observed in resting cytokine levels after PRT. However, an indication of reduced IL‐17F secretion following resistance exercise was observed in the trained compared with the untrained state. This study suggests little acute and chronic effect of PRT on cytokine levels in IFN‐treated PwMS.  相似文献

This study investigated the hypertrophic potential of load‐matched blood‐flow restricted resistance training (BFR) vs free‐flow traditional resistance training (low‐load TRT) performed to fatigue. Ten healthy young subjects performed unilateral BFR and contralateral low‐load TRT elbow flexor dumbbell curl with 40% of one repetition maximum until volitional concentric failure 3 days per week for 6 weeks. Prior to and at 3 (post‐3) and 10 (post‐10) days post‐training, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to estimate elbow flexor muscle volume and muscle water content accumulation through training. Acute changes in muscle thickness following an early vs a late exercise bout were measured with ultrasound to determine muscle swelling during the immediate 0–48 h post‐exercise. Total work was threefold lower for BFR compared with low‐load TRT (P < 0.001). Both BRF and low‐load TRT increased muscle volume by approximately 12% at post‐3 and post‐10 (P < 0.01) with no changes in MRI‐determined water content. Training increased muscle thickness during the immediate 48 h post‐exercise (P < 0.001) and to greater extent with BRF (P < 0.05) in the early training phase. In conclusion, BFR and low‐load TRT, when performed to fatigue, produce equal muscle hypertrophy, which may partly rely on transient exercise‐induced increases in muscle water content.  相似文献

Left ventricular (LV) dimensions and function and maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2)max) were measured in endurance-trained (10 male, m, 10 female, f), strength-trained athletes (8 m, 10 f) and untrained subjects (9 m, 10 f). LV dimensions were measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and echocardiography and the results were equal irrespective of method. Endurance-trained m and f had significantly higher LV volumes and mass than both strength-trained and controls. No VO(2)max or dimensional differences were seen between strength-trained and untrained subjects. In endurance-trained males, LV volumes and mass/kg bw were higher than in endurance-trained females. There was no significant gender difference for strength-trained or untrained subjects regarding body weight-related heart dimensions. It is concluded that LV dimensions and volumes are strongly dependent on oxygen transport capacity in normal subjects practising different modes of training, and that the gender differences, if LV dimensions are related to aerobic work capacity, are smaller than previously reported.  相似文献

Background:Technological advancements in modern military and acrobatic jet planes have resulted in extraordinary psychophysiological loads being exerted upon flying personnel, including inducing neck and back pain. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 12 weeks of functional strength training on 1) the volume and strength of the neck and shoulder muscles and 2) muscular activity upon exposure to helmets of different masses and elevated Gz forces in a long-arm centrifuge in high-performance aircraft personnel. Methods:Eighteen participants underwent 12 weeks of functional strength training (n=12) or the control protocol(n=6) without additional strength training.Pre-and post-intervention tests included evaluations of isometric strength of the head extensor muscles, flexion, and lateral flexion and rotation,as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)to measure the volume of the m.stemocleidomastoideus,m.trapezius,and deep neck muscles.Furthermore, during a long-arm centrifuge (+1.4 and +3Gz) protocol, the muscular activity levels of the m.sternocleidomastoideus,m.trapezius and m.erector spinae muscles were assessed without a flight helmet, with a helmet, and with a helmet and night vision goggles. Each participant's perception of muscular strain was noted immediately after the long-arm centrifuge protocol. Results:The maximal isometric strength in all exercises and muscle volumes increased in the training group but not the control group (P<0.05).Relative muscle activity (%MVC) with a helmet decreased after the intervention in the training but not the control group (P=0.01).Relative muscle activity while wearing a helmet and night vision goggles was higher after intervention in the control group than in the training group (P<0.01).The perceived muscular strain of the neck muscles induced by the long-arm centrifuge did not differ between the groups. Conclusions:Twelve weeks of functional strength training improves the maximal isometric strength and volume of neck and shoulder muscles and leads to lower relative muscle activation upon exposure to elevated Gz forces in a long-arm centrifuge.  相似文献
