Objective

To characterize meningococcal strains isolated from five cases of meningococcal disease (MD) associated with an outbreak in Trancoso – BA, occurred in October 2009. All cases, with the exception of a 39-year-old male, attended a dance party with approximately 1000 youngsters in a rural site.

Materials and methods

The epidemiological investigation was conducted by the Epidemiological Surveillance Service of Bahia State. Meningococcal strains were characterized at Adolfo Lutz Institute, the Brazilian National Reference Laboratory for Bacterial Meningitis by conventional techniques (serotype, serosubtype and antimicrobial susceptibility test) and by molecular methods (Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis – PFGE and Multilocus Sequence Typing – MLST).

Results

The PFGE showed 2 closely related restriction profiles, designated as PFGE types A and A1, having 92% relatedness to each other. MLST characterization showed both A and A1 clones were ST-3780, which belongs to the ST-103 complex. All isolates displayed the phenotype C:23:P1.5 and were susceptible to all antibiotics tested.

Conclusions

This is the first reported MD outbreak associated with serogroup C ST-103 complex in Brazil, as well as the party and illicit drug-use associated outbreak.  相似文献

In Italy, serogroup C meningococci of the clonal complex cc11 (MenC/cc11) have caused several outbreaks of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) during the past 20 years. Between December 2019 and January 2020, an outbreak of six cases of IMD infected with MenC/cc11 was identified in a limited area in the northern part of Italy. All cases presented a severe clinical picture, and two of them were fatal. This report is focused on the microbiological and molecular analysis of meningococcal isolates with the aim to reconstruct the chain of transmission. It further presents the vaccination strategy adopted to control the outbreak. The phylogenetic evaluation demonstrated the close genetic proximity between the strain involved in this outbreak and a strain responsible for a larger epidemic that had occurred in 2015 and 2016 in the Tuscany Region. The rapid identification and characterisation of IMD cases and an extensive vaccination campaign contributed to the successful control of this outbreak caused by a hyperinvasive meningococcal strain.  相似文献

BACKGROUND:

Serogroup C meningococcal disease has been endemic in Canada since the early 1990s, with periods of hyperendemic disease documented in the past two decades. The present study characterized invasive serogroup C meningococci in Canada during the period from 2002 to 2009.

METHODS:

Serogroup C meningococci were serotyped using monoclonal antibodies. Their clonal types were identified by either multilocus enzyme electrophoresis or multilocus sequence typing.

RESULTS:

The number of invasive serogroup C Neisseria meningitidis isolates received at the National Microbiology Laboratory (Winnipeg, Manitoba) for characterization has dropped from a high of 173 isolates in 2001 to just 17 in 2009, possibly related to the introduction of the serogroup C meningococcal conjugate vaccine. Before 2006, 80% to 95% of all invasive serogroup C meningococci belonged to the electrophoreic type (ET)-15 clonal type, and the ET-37 (but not ET-15) type only accounted for up to 5% of all isolates. However, beginning in 2006, the percentage of the ET-15 clonal type decreased while the ET-37 (but not ET-15) type increased from 27% in 2006 to 52% in 2009. The percentage of invasive serogroup C isolates not belonging to either ET-15 or ET-37 also increased. Most ET-15 isolates expressed the antigenic formula of C:2a:P1.7,1 or C:2a:P1.5. In contrast, the ET-37 (but not ET-15) isolates mostly expressed the antigens of C:2a:P1.5,2 or C:2a:P1.2.

CONCLUSION:

A shift in the antigenic and clonal type of invasive serogroup C meningococi was noted. This finding suggests vigilance in the surveillance of meningoccocal disease is warranted.  相似文献

目的研究汉族人群中C反应蛋白(CRP)基因启动子区-717A/G和-390C/A/T单核苷酸多态性(SNP)的分布以及与冠心病(CHD)和CRP水平的相关性。方法选取2007年10月至2008年5月北京医院住院患者分为CHD组(111例)及对照组(101例)。-717A/G位点运用限制性酶切长度多态性(RELP)的方法检测基因多态性,-390C/A/T位点运用序列特异性的聚合酶链反应(SSP)检测多态性。为排除其他危险因素的干扰,综合考虑与CHD相关的其他危险因素,运用Logistic回归的方法分析相关性。结果在汉族人群中-717A/G多态性各种等位基因与基因型研究对象的CRP水平差异无统计学意义,各等位基因频率和基因型频率在CHD和对照组中分布差异无统计学意义。-390C/A/T多态性与CRP水平相关,-390C/A/T多态性的等位基因频率(P<0.05)基因型频率(P<0.05)在两组之间差异有统计学意义。分析CHD相关危险因素发现该位点依然与CHD显著相关,带有T等位基因的个体得CHD的概率是不带T等位基因个体的2.66倍。结论-717A/G多态性与CRP水平和CHD未见相关;CRP基因-390C/A/...  相似文献

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection causes insulin resistance. Because increased insulin resistance is a risk factor for development of hepatocellular carcinoma and reduced long-term survival, insulin resistance is a therapeutic target in patients with HCV infection. Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are not only structural constituents of proteins but they are also considered as regulators of insulin signalling. We first describe two cases suggesting that administration of BCAAs improves insulin resistance associated with HCV-related liver disease. Although there were no changes in body weight, plasma glucose concentration and haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) value were decreased. Moreover, BCAAs caused a decrease in both fasting insulin concentration and the value of homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance. Thus, BCAAs are a potential therapeutic agent for improving insulin resistance in patients with HCV-related liver disease.  相似文献
