Background

Problems inhibiting non-adaptive behaviors have been linked to an increased risk for substance use and other risk taking behaviors in adolescence. This study examines the hypothesis that abnormalities in neural activation during inhibition in early adolescence may predict subsequent substance involvement.

Methods

Thirty eight adolescents from local area middle schools, ages 12-14, with very limited histories of substance use, underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as they performed a go/no-go task of response inhibition and response selection. Adolescents and their parents were then followed annually with interviews covering substance use and other behaviors. Based on follow-up data, youth were classified as transitioning to heavy use of alcohol (TU; n = 21), or as healthy controls (CON; n = 17).

Results

At baseline, prior to the onset of use, youth who later transitioned into heavy use of alcohol showed significantly less activation than those who went on to remain non to minimal users throughout adolescence. Activation reductions in TU at baseline were seen on no-go trials in 12 brain regions, including right inferior frontal gyrus, left dorsal and medial frontal areas, bilateral motor cortex, cingulate gyrus, left putamen, bilateral middle temporal gyri, and bilateral inferior parietal lobules (corrected p < .01, each cluster ≥32 contiguous voxels).

Conclusions

These results support the hypothesis that less neural activity during response inhibition demands predicts future involvement with problem behaviors such as alcohol and other substance use.  相似文献

Rationale

Higher doses of benzodiazepines and alcohol induce sedation and sleep; however, in low to moderate doses these drugs can increase aggressive behavior.

Objectives

To assess firstly the effects of ethanol, secondly the effects of flunitrazepam, a so-called club drug, and thirdly the effects of flunitrazepam plus alcohol on aggression in mice and rats.

Methods

Exhaustive behavioral records of confrontations between a male resident and a male intruder were obtained twice a week, using CF-1 mice and Wistar rats. The salient aggressive and non-aggressive elements in the resident's repertoire were analyzed. Initially, the effects of ethanol (1.0 g/kg), and secondly flunitrazepam (0; 0.01; 0.1; and 0.3 mg/kg) were determined in all mice and rats; subsequently, flunitrazepam or vehicle, given intraperitoneally (0; 0.01; 0.1; and 0.3 mg/kg) was administered plus ethanol 1.0 g/kg or vehicle via gavage.

Results

The most significant finding is the escalation of aggression after a moderate dose of ethanol, and a low dose of flunitrazepam. The largest increase in aggressive behavior occurred after combined flunitrazepam plus ethanol treatment in mice and rats.

Conclusions

Ethanol can heighten aggressive behavior and flunitrazepam further increases this effect in male mice and rats.  相似文献

Background

Recent studies have indicated that 45-67% of those in treatment for alcohol use disorders suffer from alexithymia, a multifaceted personality trait characterized by difficulties identifying and describing emotions and an externally oriented cognitive style. The high reported prevalence rates of alexithymia among those with alcohol dependence led to speculation that alexithymia is a personality dimension that may predispose to risky or problematic alcohol use.

Methods

This notion was examined in 314 adult volunteers (54% female) aged 18-45 years (M = 27.6 years), all of whom reported at least occasional alcohol consumption, who completed online surveys assessing alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale, or TAS-20), parental alcoholism (Children of Alcoholics Screening Test, or CAST), everyday signs of frontal lobe dysfunction (Frontal Systems Behavior Scale, or FrSBe) and risky alcohol use (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, or AUDIT).

Results

TAS-20 scores were positively correlated with the index of parental alcoholism CAST, index of frontal lobe dysfunction FrSBe and measure of alcohol-related problems AUDIT. Chi-square test showed an association between TAS-20-defined alexithymia and being the offspring of an alcoholic parent as defined by CAST. Regression analysis showed that frontal lobe dysfunction (FrSBe) mediated the relationship between alexithymia (TAS-20 total score) and risky alcohol use (AUDIT).

Conclusions

The findings suggest that alexithymia is related to deficiencies in frontal lobe functioning that may reflect a heritable predisposition to alcohol problems.  相似文献

Objectives

The present study assessed the effect of adolescent alcohol exposure on the later aversive and locomotor-activating effects of cocaine.

Methods

Male rats were exposed to alcohol or vehicle for 10 days [postnatal day (PND) 30-39; 2 g/kg IP]. Taste aversion conditioning began on PND 65. During aversion conditioning, subjects were presented with saccharin followed by cocaine (32 mg/kg; 15, 180 or 300 min post saccharin) or saline. Following each injection, animals were placed in locomotor chambers for 1 h. To determine if any effects seen were specific to the adolescent developmental period, the procedure was replicated in adult animals.

Results

Animals exposed to vehicle during adolescence showed significant aversions at all time delays. Animals exposed to ethanol during adolescence showed a decrease in consumption only at the 15 and 180 min delays. Groups exposed to alcohol during adolescence showed a decrease in gross, and an increase in fine, motor activity in response to cocaine. Animals exposed to alcohol during adulthood also showed attenuated taste aversions.

Conclusions

Exposure to ethanol during adolescence attenuated the aversive effects of cocaine and altered its locomotor-activating effects. Although this effect is not specific to adolescence, this is the time when alcohol use is typically initiated so that such exposure may enhance later abuse liability of cocaine.  相似文献

Context

Hypothyroidism has been observed in the fifties and sixties as an undesirable side-effect of cobalt therapy used for its erythropoietic properties in the treatment of anemia.

Objective

This study aims at evaluating the possible impact of both cumulative (long-term) and recent occupational exposure to cobalt on thyroid function and red blood cells.

Methods and setting

A cross-sectional survey was conducted from February 2008 to August 2009 in a population of 249 male workers from a cobalt production department in the North of Belgium. The possible effect of cobalt exposure on thyroid and red blood cells was investigated through multiple regression analyses.

Results

Blood cobalt ranged from undetectable to 3.20 μg/100 ml (median 0.10); urinary cobalt from 0.30 to 204.30 μg/gcreat (median 3.90) and long-term exposure to cobalt ranged from 0.15 to 6990.46 μg/gcreat·years (median 106.09). No effect of cobalt exposure on thyroid or red blood cell parameters was observed at these levels of exposure.

Conclusion

The results support the absence of effects on the thyroid and red blood cells when occupational exposure to cobalt is kept below the recommended biological limit of occupational exposure (15 μg Co/gcreat in urine).  相似文献

Background

Epidemiological studies examining the effects of prenatal toxic heavy metals exposure on neonatal development at the population-based level are limited.

Objective

To explore prenatal exposure levels to toxic heavy metals and examine whether exposure is associated with neonatal development.

Methods

A stratified multi-stage cluster sampling methodology was used to investigate 1652 mother-infant pairs from 2008 through 2009 in Shanghai. Cord blood concentrations of Pb, Hg, Cd, As, Tl and NBNA (Neonatal Behavioral Neurological Assessments) were tested. We defined three different exposure levels (low, medium and high) according to the considered safe values.

Results

The median blood Pb, Hg, Cd, As and Tl concentrations were 41 μg/L, 1.88 μg/L, 0.03 μg/L, 0.86 μg/L and 0.02 μg/L, respectively, which all were in the level considered safe. Increasing exposure to Cd, Hg, As and Tl during pregnancy was associated with decreasing NBNA scores. High level-exposure (exceeding the level considered safe) of Hg, Cd and Tl had lower NBNA scores compared to medium and low levels (both in the level considered safe), which implied that the level considered safe of these heavy metals was safe for the newborns' development. The mean decreasing scores of NBNA was 0.61, 1.50 and 0.84 (total score = 40) with high-level exposure of Hg, Cd and Tl, respectively. The medium-level exposure (in the level considered safe) to As had lower NBNA scores compared to low-level exposure, which implied that level of considered safe for As was not safe to the newborns' development. However, prenatal Pb high-exposure did not affect NBNA scores either by single or multiple factor analysis. In addition, important contribution factors for heavy metals pollutants were diet, lifestyle and housing renovation.

Conclusions

Prenatal heavy metals except Pb exposures were associated with NBNA. The adverse effect of medium-level As warrants the need to further investigate the safe range of As.  相似文献

Background

The association between cocaine use and depression has been frequently observed. However, less is known about the significance of depression in the treatment of cocaine use disorders. This study examined possible interrelations between drug use and depression severity among cocaine-dependent patients in psychosocial treatments for cocaine dependence.

Methods

Monthly assessed drug use and depression severity scores of N = 487 patients during 6-month psychosocial treatments for cocaine dependence were analyzed using hybrid latent growth models.

Results

Results indicated a moderate but statistically significant (z = 3.13, p < .01) influence of depression severity on increased drug use in the upcoming month, whereas drug use did not affect future depression severity.

Conclusions

Findings suggest that depression symptoms are an important predictor of drug use outcomes during psychosocial treatments for cocaine dependence and, hence, underline the importance of adequately addressing depression symptoms to improve treatment outcomes.  相似文献

Background

This study examined associations between acute alcohol and drug use and violence towards others in conflict incidents (overall, partner, and non-partner conflict incidents) by men and women recruited from substance use disorder (SUD) treatment.

Methods

Semi-structured interviews were used to obtain details about interpersonal conflict incidents (substance use, whether specific conflicts were with intimate partners or non-partners) in the 180 days pre-treatment. Participants for this study were selected for screening positive for past-year violence (N = 160; 77% men, 23% women).

Results

Multi-level multinomial regression models showed that after adjusting for clustering within individual participants, the most consistent predictors of violence across models were acute cocaine use (significant for overall, intimate partner and non-partner models), acute heavy alcohol use (significant for overall and non-partner models), and male gender (significant in all models).

Conclusions

This study was the first to explicitly examine the role of acute alcohol and drug use across overall, partner and non-partner conflict incidents. Consistent with prior studies using a variety of methodologies, alcohol, cocaine use and male gender was most consistently and positively related to violence severity (e.g., resulting in injury). The results provide important and novel event-level information regarding the relationship between acute alcohol and specific drug use and the severity of violence in interpersonal conflict incidents.  相似文献

Background

The relation between early and frequent alcohol use and later difficulties is quite strong. However, the degree that alcohol use persists, which is often a necessary cause for developing alcohol-related problems or an alcohol use disorder, is not well studied, particularly with attention to race and gender. A novel statistical approach, the Multi-facet Longitudinal Model, enables the concurrent study of age of initiation and persistence.

Methods

The models were applied to longitudinal data on youth alcohol use from ages 12 through 19, collected in the (U.S.) National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 cohort (N = 8984).

Results

Results confirmed that Black adolescents initiate alcohol use at later ages than do White youth. Further, after initiation, White adolescents were substantially more likely than Black adolescents to continue reporting alcohol use in subsequent years. Hispanic teens showed an intermediate pattern. Gender differences were more ambiguous, with a tendency for boys to be less likely to continue drinking after initiation than were girls.

Conclusions

Novel findings from the new analytic models suggest differential implications of early alcohol use by race and gender. Early use of alcohol might be less consequential for males who initiate alcohol use early, Black, and Hispanic youth than for their female and White counterparts.  相似文献

Purpose

The impact of 100 Hz (Hertz) acoustic frequency airflow on sinus drug deposition of aerosols was investigated using a human plastinated nasal cast. The influence of drug concentration and endonasal anatomical features on the sinus deposition enhanced by the 100 Hz acoustic airflow was also examined.

Methods

Plastinated models were anatomically, geometrically and aerodynamically validated (endoscopy, CT scans, acoustic rhinometry and rhinomanometry). Using the gentamicin as a marker, 286 experiments of aerosol deposition were performed. Changes of airborne particles metrology produced under different nebulization conditions (100 Hz acoustic airflow and gentamicin concentration) were also examined.

Results

Aerodynamic and geometric investigations highlighted a global behaviour of plastinated models in perfect accordance with a nasal decongested healthy subject. The results of intrasinus drug deposition clearly demonstrated that the aerosols can penetrate into the maxillary sinuses. The 100 Hz acoustic airflow led to increase the deposition of drug into the maxillary sinuses by a factor 2-3 depending on the nebulization conditions. A differential intrasinus deposition of active substance depending on maxillary ostium anatomical features and drug concentration was emphasized.

Conclusion

The existence of a specific transport mechanism of penetration of nebulized particles delivered with acoustic airflow was proposed.  相似文献

Background

Epidemiologic research has consistently found lower prevalence of alcohol and drug use disorders among Hispanic immigrants to the US than among US-born Hispanics. Recent research has begun to examine how this change occurs in the process of assimilation in the US. We aimed to study immigration, US nativity, and return migration as risk factors for alcohol and drug use among people of Mexican origin in both the US and Mexico.

Methods

Data come from nationally representative surveys in the United States (2001-2003; n = 1208) and Mexico (2001-2002; n = 5782). We used discrete time event history models to account for time-varying and time-invariant characteristics.

Results

We found no evidence that current Mexican immigrants in the US have higher risk for alcohol or alcohol use disorders than Mexicans living in Mexico, but current immigrants were at higher risk for drug use and drug use disorders. Current Mexican immigrants were at lower risk for drug use and drug disorders than US-born Mexican-Americans. US nativity, regardless of parent nativity, is the main factor associated with increasing use of alcohol and drugs. Among families of migrants and among return migrants we found increased risk for alcohol use, drug use and alcohol and drug use disorders. Evidence of selective migration and return of immigrants with disorders was found regarding alcohol use disorders only.

Conclusions

Research efforts that combine populations from sending and receiving countries are needed. This effort will require much more complex research designs that will call for true international collaboration.  相似文献

Aim

To identify factors associated with severe femoral vein (FV) damage among groin injectors (GIs) on oral opioid substitution treatment.

Design

A cohort study.

Setting

Drug treatment centres in South East England.

Participants

GIs attending an ultrasound ‘health-check’ clinic.

Measures

Femoral ultrasonography and clinical grading of venous disease in each leg.

Method

Comparison of 67 GIs with severely damaged FV and 86 GIs with minimal/moderate damage.

Findings

The majority were men (69.3%) and the mean age was 36.2 years with mean duration of injecting drug use (IDU) of 13.3 years. There were no significant between-group differences in age, gender or duration of IDU. Severe FV damage was associated with longer duration of groin injecting (GI; P < 0.005), use of thick needles (blue-hub, 23G; or green-hub, 21G; P < 0.001), benzodiazepine injection (P < 0.005), history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT, P < 0.001) and recurrent DVT (P < 0.001), presence of depressed groin scar (P < 0.001) and chronic venous disease (CVD, P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed needle size (β 1.2, Wald 4.9, P < 0.05) and DVT (β 3.3, Wald 38.5, P < 0.001) as the main predictors of severe FV damage.

Conclusion

Needle and syringe exchange services should consider only supplying appropriate lengths of orange-hub needle (25G) on request from GIs. Early cessation of GI, avoidance of benzodiazepine injection and prompt diagnosis and treatment of DVT might also reduce the prevalence of severe FV damage among GIs and the associated healthcare burden. Routine examination of injecting sites among these patients should include an assessment of severity of venous disease in each leg.  相似文献

Background

Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are highly prevalent and associated with non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy, decreased health care utilization and poor HIV treatment outcomes among HIV-infected individuals.

Objectives

To systematically review studies assessing the impact of AUDs on: (1) medication adherence, (2) health care utilization and (3) biological treatment outcomes among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

Data sources

Six electronic databases and Google Scholar were queried for articles published in English, French and Spanish from 1988 to 2010. Selected references from primary articles were also examined.

Review methods

Selection criteria included: (1) AUD and adherence (N = 20); (2) AUD and health services utilization (N = 11); or (3) AUD with CD4 count or HIV-1 RNA treatment outcomes (N = 10). Reviews, animal studies, non-peer reviewed documents and ongoing studies with unpublished data were excluded. Studies that did not differentiate HIV+ from HIV− status and those that did not distinguish between drug and alcohol use were also excluded. Data were extracted, appraised and summarized.

Data synthesis and conclusions

Our findings consistently support an association between AUDs and decreased adherence to antiretroviral therapy and poor HIV treatment outcomes among HIV-infected individuals. Their effect on health care utilization, however, was variable.  相似文献

Background

Although numerous studies have assessed subjective effects of nitrous oxide, few studies have analyzed for sex differences. Since sex differences have been reported in subjective effects of several drugs such as opioids, nicotine and alcohol, we sought to determine if sex modulates the subjective effects of the inhalant, nitrous oxide, in healthy volunteers.

Methods

Thirty-eight females and seventy-two males from nine studies that were conducted in our laboratory were included in this retrospective analysis. All experimental studies utilized randomized, placebo-controlled, repeated measures designs in which subjects inhaled 30% nitrous oxide in oxygen and 100% oxygen (placebo). Dependent measures in this analysis were subjective effects measured at baseline and 15 min into the inhalation period.

Results

Nitrous oxide produced a number of subjective effects, including those that could be considered abuse liability-related (“elated,” “having pleasant thoughts,” drug liking), but sex did not modulate these effects.

Conclusions

Females and males showed similar subjective responses to 30% nitrous oxide. Future prospective studies might assess other concentrations, other measures (choice, analgesic response), and other inhaled general anesthetics to more comprehensively characterize the role of sex in response to inhalants.  相似文献

Rationale

Quetiapine has been shown to be a promising medication for the treatment of alcoholism. As an atypical antipsychotic medication with antagonist activity at D1 and D2, 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A, H1 and α1 and α2 receptors, quetiapine has been found to decrease impulsivity in other psychiatric disorders but its effects on impulsivity have not been studied in alcohol dependent patients.

Objective

This study seeks to test the effects of quetiapine on a specific dimension of impulsivity, namely response inhibition. This pilot study seeks to further elucidate the mechanisms of action of quetiapine for alcohol use disorders.

Method

A total of 20 non-treatment seeking alcohol dependent individuals were randomized to one of the following conditions in a double-blind, placebo-controlled design: (1) quetiapine (400 mg/day); or (2) matched placebo. Participants completed two counterbalanced intravenous placebo-alcohol administration sessions as well as behavioral measure of response inhibition (i.e. stop signal task) pre and post placebo-alcohol administration sessions.

Results

Analyses revealed a significant effect of quetiapine in improving response inhibition as measured by the stop signal task. These results provide preliminary evidence suggesting that quetiapine improves response inhibition in alcohol dependent patients, as compared to placebo.

Conclusion

This pilot study contributes a novel putative mechanism of action of quetiapine in alcoholism, namely an improvement in response inhibition.  相似文献

Background

Alcohol use is often regarded as a means of coping with sadness and distress. The present research was conducted to explore the relation between negative mood and the reinforcing value of alcohol, while clarifying the role of coping motives.

Methods

Participants with a history of recent alcohol use (N = 44; 72% female) attended a laboratory session and were randomly assigned to either a negative (n = 22) or a neutral (n = 22) mood condition. A manipulation check confirmed that participants in the negative mood condition, but not the neutral mood condition, displayed a significant increase in negative affect. The multiple choice procedure (MCP) was used to measure the reinforcing value of alcohol after the mood manipulation.

Results

Regression models employing the MCP crossover point as the dependent variable and mood condition (neutral or negative) and drinking to cope as predictors indicated that a model with an interaction term accounted for the most variance.

Conclusions

These results suggest that the relation between mood and the reinforcing value of alcohol is moderated by drinking to cope, and help clarify the conditions under which drinking to cope may lead to negative outcomes.  相似文献

Background

Some of the genetic vulnerability for addiction may be mediated by impulsivity. This study investigated relationships among impulsivity, substance use problems and six neurexin-3 (NRXN3) polymorphisms. Neurexins (NRXNs) are presynaptic transmembrane proteins that play a role in the development and function of synapses.

Methods

Impulsivity was assessed with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale Version 11 (BIS-11), the Boredom Proneness Scale (BPS) and the TIME paradigm; alcohol problems with the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST); drug problems with the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-20); and regular tobacco use with a single question. Participants (n = 439 Caucasians, 64.7% female) donated buccal cells for genotyping. Six NRXN3 polymorphisms were genotyped: rs983795, rs11624704, rs917906, rs1004212, rs10146997 and rs8019381. A dual luciferase assay was conducted to determine whether allelic variation at rs917906 regulated gene expression.

Results

In general, impulsivity was significantly higher in those who regularly used tobacco and/or had alcohol or drug problems. In men, there were modest associations between rs11624704 and attentional impulsivity (p = 0.005) and between rs1004212 and alcohol problems (p = 0.009). In women, there were weak associations between rs10146997 and TIME estimation (p = 0.03); and between rs1004212 and drug problems (p = 0.03). The dual luciferase assay indicated that C and T alleles of rs917906 did not differentially regulate gene expression in vitro.

Conclusions

Associations between impulsivity, substance use problems and polymorphisms in NRXN3 may be gender specific. Impulsivity is associated with substance use problems and may provide a useful intermediate phenotype for addiction.  相似文献

Background

Polysubstance use is common in substance users, and may complicate their clinical course. This study, in a criminal justice setting in Sweden, examines the association between the number of concurrently used substance types and psychiatric symptoms during 30 days before incarceration, while controlling for background variables such as family history (drug and alcohol problems, psychiatric problems, criminality), demographic data and history of emotional, physical or sexual abuse.

Methods

The data material comprised 5659 criminal justice clients reporting a substance use problem, examined with the Addiction Severity Index. Variables were compared in a multinomial regression analysis, comparing clients reporting one (n = 1877), two (n = 1408), three (n = 956), four (n = 443) and five or more (n = 167) substance types.

Results

The 30-day prevalence of most psychiatric symptoms included in the study (depression, anxiety, cognitive problems, hallucinations, difficulty controlling violent behaviour, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts) was higher in individuals with a higher number of concurrent substance types used. In multinomial regression analysis, while controlling for background variables, these associations remained for concurrent suicidal ideation, cognitive problems, hallucinations and violent behaviour, with the latter two being associated with the higher numbers of substance types. Binge alcohol drinking, tranquilizers, opioids and the number of substance types reported were associated with several of the psychiatric symptoms.

Conclusions

In the present criminal justice setting in Sweden, the use of multiple substance types and concurrent psychiatric symptoms appear to be associated, and a sub-group reporting particularly high numbers of concurrent substance types are particularly likely to report potentially severe psychiatric problems.  相似文献

Introduction

Depressive symptomatology is a predictive variable of tobacco use. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence that this symptomatology has on tobacco use when moderated by emotional attention.

Methods

A total of 289 participants (127 males, 162 females) completed a survey to measure perceived emotional intelligence, depressive symptomatology, tobacco use and sociodemographic variables. Results were analyzed using a multiple regression model that included self-perceived emotional attention as a moderating variable.

Results

In women, an interaction was found between depressive symptomatology and gender for predicting the number of cigarettes smoked (t = 2.45; p = .01), but not in men (t = −.74; p = .45). This interaction was moderated by emotional attention (t = 2.83; p = .005), such that women with medium and high levels of attention consumed a larger number of cigarettes.

Conclusions

In women, the effect of depressive symptomatology on tobacco use was moderated by the amount of attention that women paid to those symptoms. Such a moderating effect of attention was not observed in men. We recommend that smoking cessation programs incorporate interventions designed specifically for women, in particular to help them manage depressive symptomatology.  相似文献

Background

Methamphetamine (MA) use among pregnant women is an increasing problem in the United States. The impact of prenatal MA exposure on development in childhood is unknown.

Objective

To examine the effects of prenatal MA exposure on motor and cognitive development in children at 1, 2, and 3 years of age.

Design/methods

IDEAL enrolled 412 mother-infant pairs at four sites (Tulsa OK, Des Moines IA, Los Angeles CA, and Honolulu HI). MA subjects (n = 204) were identified by self report or GC/MS confirmation of amphetamine and metabolites in infant meconium. Comparison subjects (n = 208) were matched (race, birth weight, maternal education, and type of insurance), denied amphetamine use, and had a negative meconium screen. Both groups included prenatal alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use, but excluded use of opiates, lysergic acid diethylamide, phencyclidine or cocaine only. The Peabody Developmental Motor Scales (PDMS-2) were administered to the infants at the 1 and 3 year visits. This analysis includes a subsample (n = 350) of the IDEAL study with completed 1 and/or 3 year visits (n = 330 and 281, respectively). At each annual visit we also conducted the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-II) as a general evaluation of mental and motor development. The BSID-II analysis includes a subsample (n = 356) of the IDEAL study with completed 1, 2, and/or 3 year visits (n = 331, 288, and 278 respectively). GLM analysis conducted on the PDMS-2 and BSID-II examined the effects of MA exposure and heavy MA exposure (≥ 3 days of use/week), with and without covariates. Longitudinal analyses were used to examine the effects of MA exposure on changes in motor and cognitive performance over time.

Results

Heavy MA exposure was associated with significantly lower grasping scores than some and no use at 1 year (P = 0.018). In longitudinal analysis, lower grasping scores associated with any MA exposure and heavy exposure persisted to 3 years. There were no effects of MA exposure, including heavy exposure, on the Bayley Mental Development Index (MDI) or Psychomotor Development Index (PDI) at any or across age.

Conclusions

There were no differences in cognition as assessed by the BSID-II between the groups. There was a subtle MA exposure effect on fine motor performance at 1 year with the poorest performance observed in the most heavily exposed children. By 3 years, no differences in fine motor performance were observed. These findings suggest MA exposure has modest motor effects at 1 year that are mostly resolved by 3 years.  相似文献
