The levels of six heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in different tissues of three species of cultured marine fishes (Epinephelus areolatus, Lutjanus russelli, and Sparus sarba) collected from three fish culture sites in Hong Kong were evaluated. Metal pollution problems in the fish culture sites were serious, as reflected by the high metal concentrations recorded in sea water, sediments, and the biomonitor Perna viridis. In general, tissues of all three species contained high concentrations of Zn and Cu, but much lower concentrations of Ni, Pb, Cd, and Cr. Similar pattern of heavy metal concentrations was observed in sea water, sediment, and P. viridis. Metal concentrations in various tissues varied greatly among species and among fish culture sites. Different tissues showed different capacity for accumulating heavy metals. Gonad of all three species contained high concentrations of Zn. On the other hand, liver seemed to be the primary organ for Cu accumulation. Overall, metal concentrations in the tissues of culture marine fishes were much lower than those in P. viridis. Despite high metal levels in sea water and sediments, concentrations of Cd, Cr, and Pb in edible tissues, including muscle and skin, did not exceed permissible levels recommended by the Hong Kong Government for human consumption. Wetlands tend to accumulate heavy metals from local sources, such as Pb shot used for waterfowl hunting, and from regional sources, such as atmospheric deposition and riverine or marine inputs. We determined concentrations of six heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in livers of waterbirds shot by hunters in five Spanish wetlands to study the different factors that can contribute to the accumulation of these metals (sex, age, diet, grit, and Pb shot ingestion). Differences among wetlands were observed only for Cr, Cu, and Cd. Differences among species were observed for all the metals, and Cu was notably higher in pochards (Aythya and Netta genus) than in other waterfowl. Cu, Zn, and Cd concentrations increased with age, and only Pb showed differences related to sex, with males having higher concentrations than females. Most metals other than Pb were correlated with each other. Lead was dependent on Pb shot ingestion. Grit ingestion positively correlated with concentrations of Cr and to a lesser extent with Mn, Zn, and Cd. Ingestion of grit or shot may obscure relationships between metals and diet. Herbivorous species, which had more grit in the gizzard, had higher Cr, Zn, and Cd concentrations. Granivorous birds, which have the highest rates of Pb shot ingestion, had the highest concentrations of Pb. Grit and Pb shot ingestion are both important sources of heavy metals for waterbirds. Lead was the single metal studied whose concentrations exceeded toxicity thresholds. Received: 5 March 2002/Accepted: 12 June 2002  相似文献

Emission of heavy metals from traffic activities is an important pollution source to roadside farmland ecosystems. However, little previous research has been conducted to investigate heavy metal concentrations of roadside farmland soil in mountainous areas. Owing to more complex roadside environments and more intense driving conditions on mountainous highways, heavy metal accumulation and distribution patterns in farmland soil due to traffic activity could be different from those on plain highways. In this study, design factors including altitude, roadside distance, terrain, and tree protection were considered to analyze their influences on Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb concentrations in farmland soils along a mountain highway around Kathmandu, Nepal. On average, the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb at the sampling sites are lower than the tolerable levels. Correspondingly, pollution index analysis does not show serious roadside pollution owing to traffic emissions either. However, some maximum Zn, Cd, and Pb concentrations are close to or higher than the tolerable level, indicating that although average accumulations of heavy metals pose no hazard in the region, some spots with peak concentrations may be severely polluted. The correlation analysis indicates that either Cu or Cd content is found to be significantly correlated with Zn and Pb content while there is no significant correlation between Cu and Cd. The pattern can be reasonably explained by the vehicular heavy metal emission mechanisms, which proves the heavy metals' homology of the traffic pollution source. Furthermore, the independent factors show complex interaction effects on heavy metal concentrations in the mountainous roadside soil, which indicate quite a different distribution pattern from previous studies focusing on urban roadside environments. It is found that the Pb concentration in the downgrade roadside soil is significantly lower than that in the upgrade soil while the Zn concentration in the downgrade roadside soil is marginally higher than in the upgrade soil; and the concentrations of Cu and Pb in the roadside soils with tree protection are significantly lower than those without tree protection. However, the attenuation pattern of heavy metal concentrations as a function of roadside distance within a 100 m range cannot be identified consistently.  相似文献

Agricultural and industrial activities cause heavy metal pollution of the aquatic environment. The sensitivity of crustaceans to heavy metals is well documented. However, the hormonal and metabolic target of physiological functions affected by sublethal toxicity and stress responses have been scarcely investigated. Exposure of Palaemon elegans to increasing concentrations of heavy metals dissolved in artificial sea water resulted in an order of toxicity tested by LC50 for 96 h in intact and eyestalkless animals in which Hg is the most toxic, followed by Cd, Cu, Zn, and Pb. Eyestalkless animals were found to be more sensitive than intact individuals. Heavy metals affect the blood glucose levels, yet manipulative stress does not. The intermediate sublethal concentrations of Hg, Cd, and Pb produced significant hyperglycemic responses within 3 h, while the highest concentrations elicited no hyperglycemia in 24 h. In contrast, animals exposed to Cu and Zn showed hyperglycemia even at high concentrations. This difference in response between Cu or Zn and the nonessential heavy metals Cd, Hg, or Pb can probably be explained by the physiological roles of the former in crustaceans and by tolerance adaptations. Involvement of the crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (cHH) was tested by routine bioassay on eyestalkless individuals; each group was injected with a two-eyestalk-equivalent extract from control animals or from shrimp exposed to high concentrations of Cd, Hg, Pb, or low concentrations of Cu or Zn. All showed a hyperglycemic response within 2 h. In contrast, extracts of eyestalk removed from animals that had developed a full hyperglycemic reaction after exposure to low concentrations of Hg, Cd, Pb, or high concentrations of Cu and Zn were depleted of cHH as shown by the attenuation of the response after injection of the extracts into eyestalkless animals. This generalized and predictable sublethal response can be used as a quantitative physiological biomarker for water quality monitoring assessment. Muscles, gonads, and liver tissues of fish caught in Sepetiba and Ilha Grande Bay were analyzed to assess levels of heavy metal concentrations of Cd, Fe, Zn, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Cr. Levels of Cr surpassed the maximum permissible concentration in muscle, followed by Zn in some species. Pb, Cu, and Cd presented concentrations above maximum permissible levels in gonads and liver only. Fe presented concentrations in viscera comparable to those of highly polluted areas, although there are no standards available for this metal. Ni was the only metal that did not present contamination in the fish tissues examined. Overall, fish caught in Sepetiba Bay showed higher metal concentrations than those from Ilha Grande Bay, but the latter also presented high metal concentrations in several samples.  相似文献

Baseline data on heavy metal accumulations (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Co, Ni, Pb, Cd, and Hg) in organs and tissues, and their variations with age, sex, and habitat in free-ranging Japanese serows were determined. The metal concentrations were high in liver and kidney and low in brain and muscle. Also, high accumulations of Mn and Ni in gastrointestinal organs may be due to an undeveloped excretory system for these metals by bile. About 40% of the Hg burden in the whole body was in the fleece, indicating that a major portion of Hg body burden is excreted by moulting. The metal concentrations varied widely with metal species and also with growth stage or age, especially during the fetal, fawn and puberty periods. Metal burdens of the fetus were very low compared with those of their mothers, so parturition did not change the whole-body burdens/concentrations of metals in the mothers. Iron in the muscle and liver, and Cu in the liver showed significantly higher concentrations in the males than in the females. A significant difference of Cd concentrations was found between habitats of the serow.  相似文献

Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) is a critically endangered species endemic to China. Concentrations of heavy metals (As, Fe, Mn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr, Zn, and Hg) were examined in the tissues of Chinese alligators to elucidate the background distribution of these metals in the alligator body. Generally, within the body compartments, metal concentrations were high in liver, kidney, and heart, and low in pancreas and gonad. Study of heavy metal levels in the feces and eggs of Chinese alligator suggested that Chinese alligators could reduce body burden of toxic substances by excreting them to feces and/or sequestrating them into eggs to a lesser extent. In addition, to test whether eggshell or egg membrane could be used as surrogates to measure heavy metal load in egg contents, the correlation of metal concentrations between three egg compartments was determined. Of the nine elements analyzed, concentrations of iron, copper, and zinc in the shell membrane were highly correlated with the levels in egg contents, whereas no metal was significantly correlated between eggshell and egg contents. This suggested that the shell membrane could be a useful bioindicator for Fe, Cu, and Zn contaminations in the eggs of Chinese alligator. In a comparison of metal contents in the eggs of individuals from the Anhui captive population, the wild population in Anhui Province, and those of the Changxing captive population, higher Cu, Zn, and Cd levels and a lower Pb level were found in the Changxing individuals, indicative of specific pollutants in different areas. In addition, the majority of metal elements in the muscles of Chinese alligators and American alligators are in the same ranges. As a result of the data found in the eggs of the two alligator species, the Chinese alligators may be exposed to a higher level of metal pollutants. The study provided measurement of the heavy metal distribution in the endangered Chinese alligator for the first time and could serve as the background for the monitoring of possible heavy metal contaminations in the alligator habitats.  相似文献

Six heavy metals (chromium [Cr], nickel [Ni], copper [Cu], arsenic [As], cadmium [Cd], and lead [Pb]) were measured in sediments and soft tissues of eleven commonly consumed fish species collected from an urban river in the northern part of Bangladesh. The abundance of heavy metals in sediments varied in the decreasing order of Cr > Ni > Cu > Pb > As > Cd. The ranges of mean metal concentrations in fish species, in mg/kg wet weight (ww), were as follows: Cr, 0.11–0.46; Ni, 0.77–2.6; Cu, 0.57–2.1; As, 0.43–1.7; Cd, 0.020–0.23; and Pb, 0.15–1.1. Target hazard quotients (THQs) and target carcinogenic risk (TR) showed the intake of As and Pb through fish consumption were higher than the recommended values, indicating the consumption of these fish species is associated with noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks.  相似文献

Levels of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe, and Mn were assessed by using Posidonia oceanica as a bioindicator in the Gulf of Naples (southern Italy). Lepidochronology, which enables retroactive dating of scales and rhizomes of this seagrass, was combined with atomic spectrometry to assess temporal trends of trace elements in dated scales and rhizomes over a 10-year period. Lepidochronology occasionally has been used to monitor Hg in dated scales, but never has been used to determine concentrations of other trace elements in dated rhizomes. Data were compared between various structural parts of seagrass and between sampling sites. Concentrations of some elements found in dated scales or rhizomes showed a similar trend in most of the sites; increasing for Hg and Cu and decreasing for Pb, Fe, and Zn. Contaminant levels indicated by seagrass meadows varied from metal to metal. Concentrations of Hg, Cd, and Pb fell within the ranges measured in other areas considered to have low levels of heavy metal pollution, whereas Cu, Mn, and Zn had higher concentrations only in some years. However, on the basis of other studies, none of the sampling sites are considered to have high contamination levels.  相似文献

Generally, soil heavy metal contamination consists of a mixture of heavy metals. Soil chemical properties and interaction with other pollutants in soil affect the external heavy metal bioavailability. Moreover, interaction with other pollutants accumulated in organisms may change the toxicity of each pollutant. Therefore, the hypotheses was tested that addition of Cd or Pb to Cu-contaminated soil would lead to an increase in tissue Cu accumulation in the earthworm,Dendrobaena veneta, caused by (i) induction of metallothionein by Cd, or (ii) an increase in Cu concentration in soil solution due to the exchange of adsorbed Cu for Pb. Tissue heavy metal concentrations were determined after exposure in contaminated soils for 3 or 21 days. Considerable amounts of Cu, Cd, and Pb were accumulated, indicating that these heavy metals were available for uptake byD. veneta. Both Cd and Pb, however, did not significantly affect tissue Cu accumulation.  相似文献

In order to determine the potential heavy metal contamination in soil across Dongguan City, 124 soil samples from seven land use types were collected, four heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, and Cu) were analyzed. Total Cd, Cr, and Cu contents were significantly higher than the background values for Guangdong Province. Lead bioaccessibility in urban green land was lower than that in industrial and abandoned districts. The bioaccessibility of heavy metals was affected by total metal concentrations, soil properties, and land use types. The results showed that there was a negative correlation between the bioaccessibility of heavy metals (except for Cu) and their total concentrations. Soil pH and organic matter were the main factors affecting the bioaccessibility of Cd, Cr, Pb, and Cu in most land use types. Furthermore, sand, P, and clay also affected Pb, Cr, and Cu bioaccessibility. With the exception of the industrial zone periphery and urban green land, the bioaccessibility of heavy metals was mainly affected by clay.

This study examined the burden of Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cr and V in patches of asphyxiated mangrove swamp areas within Qua Iboe Estuary mangrove ecosystem by sediments and surface water analysis; in order to establish natural background levels of these metals and to assess anthropogenic influences on them. The analysis shows that the mean concentrations (mg/kg, dw) of Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cr and V in sediments from asphyxiated and healthy mangrove ecosystems of Qua Iboe vary from 36.3-179.4, 29.2-43.2, 3.6-37.4, 39.6-93.8, 0.15-0.53 and 2.9-9.3, with the former exhibiting higher metal accumulating potential. Although heavy metal concentrations in surface water of the asphyxiated swamp were low, their accumulative effect is significant. The concentrations of Cu and Pb in surface water of this ecosystem exceeded the water quality criteria while Ni and Cr were under the maximum concentration for drinking water quality and protection of aquatic life. The values of pollution load index (PLI), which are generally greater than unity, show that the sediments and the surface water from the asphyxiated mangrove ecosystem were polluted with heavy metals, thus suggesting anthropogenic activities as a possible source of these metals. The mean concentrations of Zn, Ni and Pb exceeded the effects range-low (ERL), indicating that there may be some ecotoxicological risk to organisms living in asphyxiated mangrove sediments.  相似文献

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a representative of the canid family with wide distribution in the Northern Hemisphere and Australia. The increasing utilization of urbanized habitats by red foxes prompted us to test whether this species may be used to monitor the presence of anthropogenic pollutants in cities or suburbs. For that purpose, we compared the concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn) in foxes from urban, suburban, and rural areas within the municipality of Zürich (Switzerland). The kidney and liver of suburban and rural foxes contained the highest Cd concentrations, whereas urban foxes contained the highest Pb levels. In the kidney of suburban foxes, Cd concentrations increased from a median value of 0.73 mg/kg in juvenile animals to 1.82 mg/kg in adults. Similarly, the liver of suburban foxes contained increasing Cd levels from a median of 0.21 mg/kg in juvenile animals to 0.94 mg/kg in adults. An age-dependent storage of Cd was also found in foxes from the rural surroundings, but no such accumulation occurred in urban foxes from the city center, where even adult animals contained very low Cd levels. Conversely, foxes from the urban center were characterized by elevated Pb concentrations during the first 2 years of life, but this transient Pb accumulation was absent in suburban or rural animals. The liver of juvenile foxes contained a median Pb concentration of 0.99 mg/kg in the city compared to only 0.47 and 0.37 mg/kg in the suburban and rural area, respectively. Thus, we found that animals from separate environmental compartments contain different patterns of tissue residues, implying that red foxes may serve as a bioindicator species to detect certain toxic hazards in urbanized habitats. The particle size distribution characteristics of sediments and the concentrations of heavy metals in Jiaozhou Bay were investigated in this study. The average concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, Hg and As were 36.88, 29.60, 82.08, 77.48, 0.083, 0.048 and 11.00 mg/kg, respectively. The heavy metal concentrations were highest in the eastern sediments, followed by those at the top of the bay, and the lowest concentrations were observed in the central region. Overall, a decreasing trend from the center of the bay to the periphery was observed. Additionally, the distribution of heavy metals in sediments was not completely controlled by sediment particle size. The degree of heavy metal contamination was evaluated using the geoaccumulation index and Hakanson’s method. The results revealed that the level of heavy metal pollution in the sediments was relatively low and that the main pollution elements were Cu and Hg. In addition, the sediments are associated with various levels of potential ecological risk due to the high pollution levels of Hg and Cd.  相似文献

Studies of birds from Do?ana (southwestern Spain) after the Aznalcóllar mining accident (April 1998) have reported high levels of genetic damage when compared to conspecifics from reference areas. However, potential relationships between DNA damage and metal pollution have not yet been reported. The aim of the present study was to investigate the current levels of Zn, Pb, As, Cu, and Cd and to determine if they were associated with the genetic damage observed in free-living, nestling white storks (Ciconia ciconia) and black kites (Milvus migrans) born in the Do?ana area after the mining spill. Blood concentrations of heavy metals and of As were quantified and DNA damage (comet assay) was determined in 258 storks and 132 kites monitored during a four-year period (1999-2002). Correlations between these elements and genetic damage varied between species and throughout years within species. Some elements did not show any relationship with DNA damage (e.g., Pb), whereas others had a significant correlation (e.g., As in storks, and Cu and Cd in kites) or only marginal statistical effects (e.g., Zn and Cd in storks, and As in kites) in some years but not in others. These results suggest that nestling white storks and black kites were affected, in part, by the elements studied, but they alone do not satisfactorily explain the observed DNA damage. Moreover, our results show that species-specific differences should be carefully considered when planning schemes for pollution monitoring, and highlight the need for including the temporal scale into the study of the pollutants effects in the wild.  相似文献

This study intends to identify the spatial patterns of variation for some metals and metalloids, in soils and mosses, in the central region of Portugal. The purposes were: (i) to identify relationships amongst five elements (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr and As) in three different media (topsoil, bottom soil and bryophytes) and with some site-specific characteristics, using Multiple Correspondence Analysis; (ii) to define spatial patterns of variation for the associations identified by Multiple Correspondence Analysis using Variography and Ordinary Kriging; and (iii) to assess atmospheric deposition as a source of heavy metals to the topsoil by crossing results with the biomonitors. The results indicated relatively low metal concentrations in soils and mosses. Some metal associations and dissociations were identified. The spatial patterns of variation of bottom and topsoil are distinct. There is some evidence that different site-specific characteristics control the spatial distribution of different elements. The areas within the central region of Portugal with a higher vulnerability to metal contamination were identified.  相似文献

The accumulation of six heavy metals (Cr, Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb and Ni) in sediment, water and in tissue parts of Mugil cephalus and Crassostrea madrasensis was studied in two locations of Pulicat lake, Southeast coast of India, which receives considerable quantity of effluents from industries located in North Chennai coastal region. The results reveal that the metal concentration in water is decreasing in the following order of Zn > Ni > Cu > Cr > Pb > Cd both in lake and barmouth and highest concentration was observed for Zn (32.5 μg L(-1) in lake and 25.2 μg L(-1) in bar mouth). Metals were highly concentrated in sediments when compared to water and biota. Metals abundance in sediments has following sequential order of Cr > Ni > Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd and the accumulation pattern in barmouth showed minor variation indicating the following pattern of Zn > Ni > Cr > Cu > Pb > Cd. The geoaccumulation index (I(geo)) for Pulicat lake sediments indicate that the sediments are extremely contaminated with Cd and moderately contaminated with Cu and Ni. Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in Mugil cephalus and Crassostrea madrasensis showed marked differences in the accumulation patterns. It is observed that Zn, Cu and Pb are accumulated in elevated concentrations in various parts of the fish and oyster when compared with other metals.  相似文献

Bioassays were performed to evaluate the impact of soil characteristics on Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn uptake by larvae of Tenebrio molitor. Metal accumulation was determined in 13 natural field soils, one metal-spiked field soil, four soil-sediment mixtures, and Cd- or Zn-spiked OECD artificial soil. Statistical analyses were used to investigate covariation of accumulation patterns with various soil metal pools and soil properties. Body concentrations of Cu and Zn in Zn-spiked OECD soils, field soils, and soil-sediment mixtures mostly remained constant. Considerable variation was noted for all Cd and Pb steady-state body concentrations among field soils and soil-sediment mixtures. For the spiked field soil and in the Cd-spiked OECD soil, body concentrations increased almost linearly with time. For the nonessential metals Cd and Pb, larval body concentrations correlated mainly to the total metal pool of the soil. Cd uptake at similar total Cd concentrations was within the same range among spiked OECD soils, field soils, and mixtures. A comparison of the findings with studies on other soil-inhabiting species shows that metal uptake patterns depend on metal type, soil type, and exposed species. It is suggested that soil organisms can be categorized according to gross divergence in ecophysiological characteristics, determined by, for instance, (non)permeability of the outer integument. These characteristics appear as similarities among multivariate functions as derived for the beetle.  相似文献

In this study, cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) levels were determined in the tissues (muscle, liver and gills) of two fish species, Capoeta capoeta umbla and Chalcalburnus mosullensis, collected from three stations of the Karasu River. The lowest metal accumulation was detected in the muscle tissues. Moreover there was some variability in the metal concentrations measured in the same tissues from samples obtained from the three different stations. A positive correlation was observed for the concentration of metal pairs Fe–Cu, Fe–Zn, Ni–Pb, Pb–Zn. These findings were also compared with national and international food standards, and Pb and Cd concentrations were determined to be above the level set by the standards. In conclusion, it was supposed that excessive consumption of these two fish species, which already occurs in this region, might pose a public health risk.  相似文献
