Lawyer and social worker as collaborators in the medical setting

Part of the role of the social worker in a medical setting should be to determine if a patient has reviewed his legal status concerning wills, insurance, and estate planning. If not, the worker should encourage the patient and his family to seek legal advice so that the patient can receive medical treatment free of legal and financial concerns.

The teaching social worker in family medicine: a prototype for the hospital social worker?

The need for physicians to receive training in interpersonal skills as well as in preventive medicine to aid them in recognizing and addressing the psychosocial aspects of illness and to facilitate the delivery of more comprehensive care to patients, has been addressed in the Department of Family Medicine and several other specialties. In January, 1978 the author surveyed social work members of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine to determine their activities and responsibilities and to identify the experiences which have proven most helpful as a preparation for their positions on medical school faculties. Results of the survey are reviewed in light of possible implications for the future hospital social worker as a medical educator.     

Does social capital matter when medical professionals encounter the SARS crisis in a hospital setting

This study examined whether social capital can enhance an individual's ability in reducing emotional exhaustion and job tension when medical professionals encounter a crisis such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).     

A frame for defining social work in a hospital setting.

A frame for articulating the unique role of social work in a hospital setting is presented which links the patient's experience of the disruptive impact of illness and hospitalization with the historical roots of the profession of social work. The presentation emphasizes the social worker's role in orienting patients and families to the importance of their part in the process of healing and helps partialize this task into specific areas of work with the social worker. A consideration of the process of discharge planning within this framework is discussed.     

Costing social work services in a hospital setting

A basic task in social work organizations concerns the allocation of scarce resources to achieve desired goals. Although some attention has been given to this topic over the years, few costing models have been developed that can be applied particularly to social work in health and other host settings. This paper describes a cost analysis study in the social work department of a large academic health center with emphasis on how a methodology was developed. Generalizations relevant to other social work departments are included and the uses and limitations of such a cost study are discussed.
