IntroductionMost nurses experience some form of workplace violence resulting in a stressful work environment, employee injury, and turnover. The aims of this project were to develop and evaluate strategies to improve the reporting of workplace violence as well as to empower emergency nurses to prevent assaults and protect themselves.MethodsThis quality improvement project had 2 phases. The phase I educational intervention focused on the importance of reporting workplace violence. Pre- and postintervention surveys measured experiences with workplace violence and reporting. The phase II educational intervention focused on de-escalation and self-protection strategies, training, safety, confidence, and emergency nurses’ preparedness to defend themselves. Responses were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-rank and McNemar tests.ResultsTwenty-five emergency nurses participated in phase I, with >90% reporting that they had been assaulted in the past month. Most did not report a workplace assault, which was unchanged after the intervention. Thirty-four emergency nurses participated in phase II, with a postintervention increase reported in the perceived helpfulness of learning self-protection techniques for the emergency nurses’ work life (Z = –2.179, P = 0.029).DiscussionThis study was consistent with the literature in that emergency nurses often do not report workplace assaults. Most of the emergency nurses surveyed had been assaulted. Although the educational interventions did not achieve the desired outcome, it is clear that additional interventions for individual nurses and institutions need to be developed and refined to increase reporting and prevent workplace assaults.  相似文献

IntroductionWorkplace violence is a serious occupational problem among nurses in emergency departments. The aim of this study was to better understand workplace violence experienced by triage nurses.MethodsA mixed-methods study was carried out with 27 Italian nurses involved in the triage area of an emergency department. Quantitative data were collected using the Violent Incident Form and qualitative data were obtained from 3 focus groups.ResultsNinety-six percent of triage nurses had suffered an episode of violence during the previous year. Participants reported that perpetrators of violence were primarily patients' relatives or friends (62%), usually male and in a lucid state of consciousness. The aggressor was a male patient in 31% of violent episodes. Male nurses reported only verbal abuse, unlike female nurses who suffered both physical and verbal episodes. Females received assistance from other staff during the aggression event more frequently than males, and females more frequently suffered from physical injury. Only physical and verbal aggressions were associated with physical injury. Four main themes emerged from the focus groups.DiscussionNurses reported that high exposure to workplace violence in triaging had significant consequences on their psychological well-being and on their behavior at work and at home. Violence, perceived as a personal and/or professional injury owing to insufficient organizational support, led professionals to experience feelings of resignation and to believe that abuse was an inevitable part of the job. Nevertheless, in our study, the precipitating factors were investigated, suggesting several possible solutions to limit this phenomenon.  相似文献

PurposeTo investigate the incidence of workplace violence involving nurses and to identify related risk factors in a high-quality Chinese teaching hospital.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was used. The final sample comprised responses from 1831 registered nurses collected with a whole-hospital survey from June 1 to June 15, 2016. The demographic characteristics of the nurses who had experienced any form of violence were collected, and logistic regression analysis was applied to evaluate the risk factors for nurses related to workplace violence.ResultsOut of the total number of nurses surveyed, 904 (49.4%) nurses reported having experienced any type of violence in the past year. The frequencies of exposure to physical and non-physical violence were 6.3% (116) and 49.0% (897), respectively. All the incidence rates of violence were lower than those of other studies based on regional hospitals in China and were at the same level found in developed countries and districts. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that nurses at levels 2 to 4 and female nurses in clinical departments were the most vulnerable to non-physical violence. For physical violence, the two independent risk factors were working in an emergency department and having 6–10 years of work experience.ConclusionsWorkplace violence directly threatens nurses from high-quality Chinese teaching hospitals. However, the incidence of WPV against nurses in this teaching hospital was better than that in regional hospitals. This study also provides reference material to identify areas where nurses encounter relatively high levels of workplace violence in high-quality Chinese teaching hospitals.  相似文献

BackgroundNursing staff, especially in violence-prone emergency departments (ED), are at high risk of burnout. Frequently experienced violence is expected to have a strong impact on the nursing staff's burnout. This study aimed to examine the differences in the level of burnout between nursing staff who work in the ED and nursing staff who work in other inpatient departments, and its relationship with violence in various hospitals in Israel.MethodA cross-sectional study that utilized a three-part questionnaire: demographic data, degree of burnout, and frequency occurrence of violence events against nurses.Results150 nurses in EDs (N = 75) and inpatient departments (N = 75) were sampled. Significant differences were found between the two groups: Nurses in EDs experienced a higher degree of burnout than nurses in other hospital departments, and the degree of burnout was found to have a positive relationship with exposure to both verbal and physical workplace violence.ConclusionsNursing staff in EDs could develop a high degree of burnout, and exposure to workplace violence could exacerbate it. The physical and emotional safety of the staff is an important aspect in preventing burnout, and creating a secure work environment.  相似文献

IntroductionThe emergency department is the most affected by physical and verbal abuse and bullying in health care. Violence against health care workers not only affects their safety, but also their performance and motivation. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated determinants of violence against health care personnel.MethodsA cross-sectional study design was used with 182 health care personnel at the emergency department tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan. Data were collected through a questionnaire comprised of 2 sections: (1) demographic questions and (2) statements to identify the prevalence of workplace violence and bullying among health care personnel. Nonprobability purposive sampling was used for recruitment. Binary logistic regression was used to identify the prevalence and determinants of violence and bullying.ResultsMost participants were younger than 40 years of age (n = 106, 58.2%). Participants were mainly nurses (n = 105, 57.7%) and physicians (n = 31, 17.0%). Participants reported experiencing sexual abuse (n = 5, 2.7%), physical violence (n = 30, 16.50%), verbal abuse (n = 107, 58.8%), and bullying (n = 49, 26.9%). The odds of experiencing physical violence were 3.7 times greater (confidence interval = 1.6-9.2) when there was not a procedure for reporting workplace violence compared to when there was a procedure.DiscussionAttention is required to identify the prevalence of workplace violence. Creating effective policies and procedures for a reporting system would potentially lead to lowering violence rates and positively impacting health care workers’ well-being.  相似文献

IntroductionThe occupational stress of clinical nurses has drawn increasing attention. It has been proven that occupational stress is related to job involvement, and job involvement affects team resilience. However, research on the relationship between emergency nurses’ occupational stress, job involvement and team resilience is lacking.AimTo explore relationships between occupational stress, job involvement, and team resilience among a sample of emergency nurses and determined significant influencing factors of occupational stress in emergency departments.MethodsIn four hospitals in Shandong, China, 187 emergency room nurses participated in a study. The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, the Chinese version of the Stressors Scale for Emergency Nurses, and a scale for evaluating the team resilience of medical professionals were used to collect data.ResultsThe overall occupational stress score of nurses working in the emergency departments in Shandong province was 81.07 ± 25.80. The results of Single-factor analysis demonstrated that the scores indicating the occupational stress for emergency nurses differed significantly with respect to age, education level, marital status, children, professional title, work experience and work shift (P < 0.05). Additionally, there is a negative correlation between job involvement and team resilience and occupational stress. Multiple linear regression results showed that the job involvement, team resilience and work shift were statistically significant influencing factors of the level of occupational stress (change R2 = 17.5 %, F = 5.386, P < 0.001).ConclusionsStronger team resilience and more active job involvement resulted in lower occupational stress levels experienced by emergency nurses.  相似文献

目的:探讨急诊科护士工作场所暴力与职业紧张之间的关系,为预防急诊科护士工作场所暴力提供理论依据。方法:采用医院工作场所暴力调查量表和职业紧张目录问卷对广州市5家急诊科护士进行调查。结果:80.2%的急诊科护士在过去一年中遭受过工作场所暴力,其中辱骂、威胁、身体攻击的发生率分别为77.6%、62.0%、22.3%。急诊科护士的职业紧张平均得分为296.62分,职业任务平均得分为132.08分,紧张反应平均得分为67.52分,应对资源平均得分为87.11分。影响工作场所暴力的职业紧张因素从大到小排列依次是工作环境、休闲应对资源、心理紧张反应、任务不适、躯体紧张反应、任务过重、任务冲突。结论:急诊科护士工作场所暴力发生率高,急诊科护士工作场所暴力受职业紧张影响。  相似文献

AIM: This paper is a report of a study to examine the relation of perceived competence, collaboration, control, self-efficacy, hope, coping, age, experience, education and years of employment to resilience in operating room (OR) nurses. BACKGROUND: Resilience is viewed as a vital attribute for nurses because it augments adaptation in demanding and volatile clinical environments such as ORs. However, there has been little research into the utility of resilience as a means of dealing with workplace stress, and there is only limited understanding of variables that explain resilience in the context of nursing. METHOD: A correlational cross-sectional survey design was used. Of a national sample of 2860 Australian OR nurses, 1430 were selected by systematic random sampling and invited to complete a questionnaire in 2006. The instrument included scales measuring perceived competence, collaboration, control, self-efficacy, hope, coping and resilience, and gathered information about the demographic characteristics of respondents. RESULTS: Two regression models were used to develop a model of resilience. An initial model tested the hypothesis that a set of 12 explanatory variables contributed to resilience in OR nurses. Five variables (hope, self-efficacy, coping, control and competence) explained resilience at statistically significant levels. Age, experience, education and years of employment did not contribute to resilience at statistically significant levels. The final model explained 60% of the variance. In both models, the strongest explanatory variables were hope, self-efficacy and coping. CONCLUSION: Identification of explanatory variables that contribute to resilience in ORs may assist in implementing strategies that promote these behaviours, and thus retain nurses in this specialty.  相似文献

BackgroundDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses might experience added emotional stress. This study examined the relationship between gratitude and psychological stress to explore effective psychological support among nurses.MethodsA cross-sectional survey assessed the level of psychological distress in 646 nurses in Gwangju, South Korea, using the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), Gratitude Questionnaire-6 (K-GQ-6), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS). Sociodemographic factors and COVID-19-related experiences were also examined. A linear regression model was used to determine the factors influencing perceived stress.ResultsThe mean PSS-10 score was 19.0 ± 4.4. Linear regression analyses revealed that the MBI-GS-Exhaustion, PHQ-9, and GAD-7 scores were positively associated with perceived stress, while the MBI-GS-Professional efficacy score was inversely associated with perceived stress. Gratitude disposition using the K-GQ-6 score negatively predicted PSS-10 (β = 0.829, p < 0.001).ConclusionsPsychological interventions that help cultivate gratitude and professional efficacy among nurses can help promote stress resilience throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.  相似文献

AimThis qualitative study aims to investigate the feelings experienced by nurses following episodes of violence in the workplace.BackgroundNumerous studies show that healthcare professionals are increasingly finding themselves victims of violence; of all professionals, nurses in the Emergency Department and especially those performing triage are one of the staff categories which most frequently experience these episodes during their work.IntroductionIn Italy, this phenomenon has been studied very little in comparison to other countries but has recently been gaining increasing attention. Few studies have investigated the feelings experienced by nurses following episodes of violence in the workplace.MethodsFor this study a phenomenological approach was used. Assumptions and previous findings were set aside (bracketing). A purposive sample of 9 nurses coming from 7 different Emergency Department in the region of Tuscany, Italy was interviewed during a focus group meeting. The data analysis was carried out using the Colaizzi method.ResultsData analysis revealed 10 significant themes/responses. The quality of reporting was guaranteed by adopting the COREQ criteria.DiscussionData analysis revealed that nurses feel that violent episodes are “inevitable” and that they feel they have grown accustomed to high levels of violence, that they suffer feelings of “inadequacy” but also that they are aware that they themselves can trigger conflict with patients, and again suffer the feeling of “being alone” in facing these problems and a sense of “being left on their own” by the institution and feeling “hurt”, “scared”, “angry” and have a sense that “it is not fair”. Last but not least, “the gender difference” appears to play an important role in the emotional response.ConclusionsTo suffer episodes of violence has serious and severe “hidden costs” which are just as important as the direct, tangible costs.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe study aimed to investigate the level and factors associated with the resilience of nurses practicing at the main COVID-19 referral center in Lebanon.MethodsThe study utilized a cross-sectional survey design. Data were collected electronically in the spring of 2020 from 265 nurses. The questionnaire included five sections: demographic characteristics, job satisfaction, turnover intentions, exposure to violence, and resilience levels. Multiple linear regression was used to determine factors associated with resilience.ResultsResults showed that the overall score of resilience among nurses was 66.91 ± 13.34. Most nurses were satisfied with their job (67.8%), and most nurses reported that it is unlikely for them to quit their present work in the coming year (76.2%). Over the last year, three-quarters of nurses (74.7%) reported being ever exposed to a form of occupational violence. The resilience of nurses was directly associated with job satisfaction and male gender and inversely associated with intention-to-quit and exposure to violence (P < 0.05).ConclusionsEnhancing the resilience of nurses at the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic improves their job satisfaction and retention and would help support the effectiveness and efficiency of care services. Nurse managers can regularly investigate the resilience of nurses and offer interventions that would strengthen it, especially at times of crisis.  相似文献
