Subcutaneous infection by Microsporum gypseum

We report a case of subcutaneous infection caused by the dermatophyte Microsporum gypseum in an immunocompetent host. The patient acquired the infection in the knee through a traumatic inoculation of a splinter. To our knowledge this is the first case of subcutaneous infection caused by this fungus.     

Untersuchungen zur Ultrastruktur von Microsporum gypseum

Zusammenfassung Der ultrastrukturelle Aufbau der Zellwand, der Septen, der cytoplasmatischen Membran und der Lomasomen von M. gypseum wird beschrieben. Zellwand und Septen zeigen deutliche Unterschiede zu Trichophyton rubrum, Epidermophyton floccosum und Keratinomyces Ajelloi. Zwischen M. gypseum und M. canis bestehen auch in der Feinstruktur morphologische Ähnlichkeiten. Auffällig ist die oft sehr ausgeprägte Fragmentierung der cytoplasmatischen Membran, an deren Stelle sich bisweilen dichte Ansammlungen von Vesikeln finden.

Summary The ultrastructure of the cell wall, septa, plasma membrane and lomasomes of Microsporum gypseum is described. Cell wall and septa are different from those of Trichophyton rubrum, Epidermophyton floccosum and Keratinomyces Ajelloi. The fine structure of M. gypseum is similar to that of M. canis. In many places the plasma membrane shows conspicuous fragmentation. Sometimes the plasma membrane appears to be replaced by aggregated vesicles.

Human infections with Microsporum gypseum in Denmark

Ninety cases of Microsporum gypseum infection in Denmark during the period 1933-1977 are reviewed. The sex ratio, age distribution, and anatomical sites are started. A case of onychomycosis in a 1-year-old child is reported, and the cases of M. gypseum onychomycosis in the literature are reviewed.     

Tinea corporis caused by Microsporum gypseum]

Human infections due to microsporum gypseum are rare. We report on a female patient who had tinea corporis caused by M. gypseum after a cutaneous wound. The numerous lesions located on the borders of the wound had an eczematous appearance.
