The Japanese Journal of Logopedics and Phoniatrics, 50, 116–122 (in Japanese)) proposed the hypothesis that in Japanese the transition from the core vowels (CVs) to the following segments affected the occurrence of stuttering. However, the transition we investigated was in the first syllables only, and the effect of the transition in second, third and fourth syllables was not addressed. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the transition from the CVs in the second, third and fourth syllables affected the occurrence of stuttering. The participants were 21 Japanese children. A non-word naming task and a non-word reading task were used. The frequency of stuttering was not significantly different where the number of transitions from the CVs differed on either task. These results suggest that the transition from the CVs in the second, third and fourth syllables does not have a significant effect on the occurrence of stuttering in Japanese.

Effect of Peripheral Axotomy on Gene Expression of NIDD in Rat Neural Tissues

Peripheral nerve lesion-induced production of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) was implicated to influence a range of postaxotomy processes necessary for neuronal survival and nerve regeneration (Zochodne et al., Neuroscience, 91:1515–1527, 1999; Keilhoff et al., Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy, 24:181–187, 2002, Nitric Oxide, 10:101–111, 2004). Protein–protein interactions represent an important mechanism in the control of NOS spatial distribution or activity (Alderton et al., Biochemical Journal, 357:593–615, 2001; Dedio et al., FASEB Journal, 15:79–89, 2001; Zimmermann et al., Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 99:17167–17172, 2002). As one of the nNOS-binding proteins, nNOS-interacting DHHC domain-containing protein with dendritic mRNA (NIDD) has recently been identified to increase nNOS enzyme activity by targeting nNOS to the synaptic plasma membrane in a postsynaptic density protein 95/discs-large/zona occlusens-1 domain dependent manner (Saitoh et al., Journal of Biological Chemistry, 279:29461–29468, 2004). In this paper, we established a rat model with peripheral axotomy to investigate the gene expression patterns of NIDD in neural tissues using TaqMan quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization combined with immunofluorescence. It revealed that NIDD mRNA was upregulated after sciatic nerve transection with the similar expressing styles as that of the nNOS in the injured nerves, corresponding dorsal root ganglia, and lumbar spinal cord. These findings imply that NIDD may be involved in the different pathological conditions including nerve regeneration, neuron loss or survival, and even pain process, possibly via regulating the enzyme nNOS activity. This short review summarizes epilepsy papers published in the Journal of Neurology in 2009, covering pathophysiology (inflammation; propagation pathways), new treatments (oxcarbazepine in paediatrics; levetiracetam in status epilepticus), and non-seizure outcomes (violence; foetal/pregnancy).

Post-Institutional Autistic Syndrome in Romanian Adoptees

Romanian adoptees have a background of severe neglect. International research has shown that this can give rise to symptoms of autistic behavior. Rutter et al. (1999, Journal of Child Psychology Psychiatry, 40(4), 537–549.) refers to “quasi-autistic patterns”, and Federici (1998, Help for the hopelss child: A guide for families. Alexandria: Federici & Assocoates.) to Post-Institutional Autistic Syndrome (PIAS). Eighty Romanian adoptees, averaging 8 years of age, who had resided in the Netherlands for 5 years were studied. Parent interviews and the Auti-R scale showed the extent to which the children exhibited PIAS. In one third of these children we observed (in addition to other behavioral problems) stereotypic behaviors and communication and language disorders. Our findings resembled the Rutter et al. (1999, Journal of Child Psychology Psychiatry, 40(4), 537–549). data. Six of the children were classified within the autistic spectrum pursuant to the Auti-R, and seven within the so-called intermediate group. No difference was found between the girls and the boys. Children who had been in their adoptive families for 5 years or more showed fewer behavior problems than children who had been in their adoptive families for four or less years.

Factor Structure Evaluation of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale

This study investigated the factor structure of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). Principal components analysis (PCA) and principal axis factor analysis (PAF) evaluated archival data from children presenting to a university clinic with suspected autism spectrum disorders (ASDs; N = 164). PCA did not replicate components identified by DiLalla and Rogers (1994, Domains of the Childhood Autism Rating Scale: Relevance for diagnosis and treatment. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 24(2), 115–128) and Stella, Mundy, and Tuchman (1999, Social and nonsocial factors in the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 29(4), 307–317). PAF identified correlated Social-Communication, Social Interaction, Stereotypies and Sensory Abnormalities, and Emotional Regulation factors. Results differed across studies; however, each identified ASD related constructs conceptually consistent with DSM-IV. Although its development predates the DSM-IV, and many newer measures are available, the CARS’ psychometric properties, conceptual relevance, and flexible administration procedures support its continued use as a screening device in the diagnostic decision-making process.     

Editorial: Pharmacotherapy and adolescent depression – an important treatment option

Over the past decade, rates of depression and of suicide in adolescents have been increasing (Collishaw, Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 56, 2015, 370; Bor et al., The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 48, 2014, 606). At the same time, there is some evidence that rates of diagnosis and, in the US at least, referral for depression in adolescents has been declining (Libby et al., Archives of General Psychiatry, 66, 2009, 633; John et al., Psychological Medicine, 46, 2016, 3315). These worrying statistics highlight the importance of disseminating accurate information about the risks and benefits of treatments for adolescent depression, in order to combat therapeutic nihilism. Extant controversy about the best ways to treat adolescent depression, and in particular with regards to the use of antidepressants, may have contributed to these trends. More specifically, we believe that some recent, high profile publications have incorrectly interpreted the benefit to risk ratio for the use of antidepressants in adolescent depression as unfavourable (e.g. Cipriani et al., The Lancet, 388, 2016, 881). In this editorial, we review clinical trial and pharmaco‐epidemiological data that supports the retention of the use of antidepressants in the management of depressed adolescents.

Tiling among stereotyped dendritic branches in an identified Drosophila motoneuron

Shape similarities of an identified Drosophila motoneuron across animals. Trends in NLRP3 inflammasome research in ischemic stroke from 2011 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis

Background

Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of permanent disability and death globally. The nucleotide-biding oligomaerization domain (NOD)-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is a multi-protein complex that plays a role in ischemic stroke. Recently, research on the role of NLRP3 in ischemic stroke has developed rapidly worldwide. However, there is no bibliometric analysis of NLRP3 in ischemic stroke to date.

Aim

Through bibliometric analysis, the aim of this study was to assess the current state of research on NLRP3 in the field of ischemic stroke research worldwide over the past 12 years and to identify important results, major research areas, and emerging trends.

Methods

Publications related to NLRP3 in ischemic stroke from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2022 were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). We used HistCite, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Bibliometrix for bibliometric analysis and visualization. The Total Global Citation Score (TGCS) was employed to assess the impact of publications.

Results

We found that research of NLRP3 in ischemic stroke developed rapidly starting in 2011. 601 relevant studies have been published in 245 journals over the past 12 years. Journal of Neuroinflammation and International Immunopharmacology were the most productive journals and Journal of Neuroinflammation was the most cited journal. Additionally, Stroke and Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism were the most co-cited journal. The most productive country was China (records = 430) and the most productive university was the Zhejiang University (records = 24). Arumugam TV (TGCS = 949) was the most cited author in this field. NLRP3 inflammasome activation, nf–κb, oxidative stress, and inflammation were the knowledge bases for the research in this field.

Conclusion

This study is a scientometric study utilizing quantitative and qualitative methods to comprehensively review the publications on NLRP3 in ischemic stroke. This information provides a reference for scholars to further study NLRP3 in ischemic stroke.
