School Health Services

Since compulsory public education began in the United States, a component of that system which now is titled, School Health Services, has existed. Even with this history, the concept remains somewhat nebulous, even in the minds of its supporters, because of a paucity of verifiable, reproducible research in the area. Until research catches up with practice, and legislation is guided by firm data, it is essential to continue to clarify and strengthen the existing system. That system with a professionally prepared school nurse as its central focus provides the greatest hope for addressing the problems that are within the scope of school health service practice.     

School Health Services

Data describing the utilization of school health services in a small rural elementary school were examined in terms of the costs of these services and the contributions of these to the school's educational mission. In the absence of health service personnel, teacher time needed to care for routine and emergency health services would equal almost one half of a teacher's time. When costs of health services wer compared to the value of the services provided by a health aide and part-time nurse, it was clear that health service costs were minimal compared to the contributions made to the school's educational mission.     

Positioning Health Services

The proliferation of different kinds of health services has created a "clutter" in the industry making it difficult to distinguish between different product/service offerings. This often leads to fuzzy positioning in the market which helps neither the firm providing a health service not the potential consumers. In this paper we propose the use of map representations to provide health care managers with diagnostic information about the market and to assist them in their service design and positioning tasks. Empritical analysis of a real-life objective data set is employed to illustrate the appropriateness of the proposed mapping approach for the health insurance industry. The paper also emphasizes the difference in the characteristics and implications of non-price scaled vs. price scaled maps in the context of health care marketing.

Franchising Reproductive Health Services

Objectives. Networks of franchised health establishments, providing a standardized set of services, are being implemented in developing countries. This article examines associations between franchise membership and family planning and reproductive health outcomes for both the member provider and the client.
Methods. Regression models are fitted examining associations between franchise membership and family planning and reproductive health outcomes at the service provider and client levels in three settings.
Results. Franchising has a positive association with both general and family planning client volumes, and the number of family planning brands available. Similar associations with franchise membership are not found for reproductive health service outcomes. In some settings, client satisfaction is higher at franchised than other types of health establishments, although the association between franchise membership and client outcomes varies across the settings.
Conclusions. Franchise membership has apparent benefits for both the provider and the client, providing an opportunity to expand access to reproductive health services, although greater attention is needed to shift the focus from family planning to a broader reproductive health context.
