Osteogenesis induced by bone matrix is inhibited by inflammation

This study was designed to examine the effect of inflammatory reaction elicited by percutaneous tube on bone induction. Inflammation was provoked by different types of biomaterials. In order to evaluate incorporation of percutaneous tubes, bone matrix and subcutaneous tissue, demineralizing bone matrix was implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of rats and was exposed to interaction with inflammatory conditions. Inhibition to the induction of cartilage and bone by the inflammatory process could be clearly demonstrated. It is suggested that the low pH levels, typical to enzymes operative in inflammation are a direct cause for inhibition of chondro and osteogenesis. The process of calcification is characterized by the activation of enzymes in high pH levels.

Scaling regression inputs by dividing by two standard deviations

Interpretation of regression coefficients is sensitive to the scale of the inputs. One method often used to place input variables on a common scale is to divide each numeric variable by its standard deviation. Here we propose dividing each numeric variable by two times its standard deviation, so that the generic comparison is with inputs equal to the mean +/-1 standard deviation. The resulting coefficients are then directly comparable for untransformed binary predictors. We have implemented the procedure as a function in R. We illustrate the method with two simple analyses that are typical of applied modeling: a linear regression of data from the National Election Study and a multilevel logistic regression of data on the prevalence of rodents in New York City apartments. We recommend our rescaling as a default option--an improvement upon the usual approach of including variables in whatever way they are coded in the data file--so that the magnitudes of coefficients can be directly compared as a matter of routine statistical practice.

目的：探讨乡镇陶瓷业大气氟污染状况，方法：选择以陶瓷业为主的磁灶镇8个采样点进行空气采样，分析和评价。结果：磁灶镇大气氟含量日均值范围为0．002－0．003mg/m^3，日均值超标率14．29％－100％，日均污染指数0．81－3．59。结论：磁灶镇大气受到氟化物污染，应加强陶瓷业环境保护管理，加强环境监测。     

Folate intake by teenage girls and by pregnant women.

In a dietary analysis comprising 110 girls aged 13-15 years and 87 pregnant women the mean folate intake proved to be less than one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances. Among the girls there was a significantly positive correlation between folate intake and energy intake, while this did not apply to the pregnant women. The reason was that the excess energy intake during pregnancy was only modest, and in many cases it was met by energy calories of low nutritional value. If supplements of folic acid are needed during pregnancy, it is recommended to start prophylaxis as early as possible, as folate intakes by potential mothers (teenage girls) are insufficient to secure a high depot level for folates before pregnancy.     

Protection by estrogenic hormone against nephrotoxicity induced by organic mercury

Summary An organic mercurial compound, MEMC has been studied for its toxic effect on the renal tubuli in male rats. In view of the slight degree of the renal failure in subacute MEMC poisoning, for its demonstration urinary transaminase activity was chosen. The increase of GOT-GPT were accompanied by the presence of large numbers of disintegrated tubular epithel cells in urine.These phenomena could be protected by treatment with estrogenic hormone, whereas the acute toxicity could not.
