Aim This study was aimed at describing nursing leadership in an academic hospital in Gauteng, South Africa. Background Nurse managers’ leadership styles affect nurses’ attitudes, behaviour and work performance. However, little is known about how nurses experience nurse leadership and what leadership styles are found in academic hospitals in Gauteng. Methods The study was based on Maxwell’s framework of leadership (relationships, equipping, leadership and attitude). A qualitative design was used in order to describe the experiences of registered nurses and nurse managers. The population of the study was all registered nurses and nurse managers of the hospital in which the study was conducted. In phase one of the study, a discussion group with 35 registered nurses using the nominal group technique was held to respond to the following statement: ‘Please explain how you have experienced leadership by nurse managers in this hospital’. In phase two of the study, five nurse managers were interviewed individually, using a semi-structured interview guide. Results Some nurse managers were practising autocratic leadership in this hospital. Implications for nursing management The nurse managers need to be taught about contemporary leadership styles such as transformational leadership and visionary leadership and also about supervision, role modelling and caring.  相似文献

Leadership practices and staff nurses’ intent to stay: a systematic review Aim The aim of the present study was to describe the findings of a systematic review of the literature that examined the relationship between managers’ leadership practices and staff nurses’ intent to stay in their current position. Background The nursing shortage demands that managers focus on the retention of staff nurses. Understanding the relationship between leadership practices and nurses’ intent to stay is fundamental to retaining nurses in the workforce. Methods Published English language articles on leadership practices and staff nurses’ intent to stay were retrieved from computerized databases and a manual search. Data extraction and quality assessments were completed for the final 23 research articles. Results Relational leadership practices influence staff nurses’ intentions to remain in their current position. Conclusion This study supports a positive relationship between transformational leadership, supportive work environments and staff nurses’ intentions to remain in their current positions. Incorporating relational leadership theory into management practices will influence nurse retention. Advancing current conceptual models will increase knowledge of intent to stay. Clarifying the distinction between the concepts intent to stay and intent to leave is needed to establish a clear theoretical foundation for further intent to stay research. Implications for Nurse Managers Nurse managers and leaders who practice relational leadership and ensure quality workplace environments are more likely to retain their staff. The findings of the present study support the claim that leadership practices influence staff nurse retention and builds on intent to stay knowledge.  相似文献

[目的]了解军队医院护士职业认同现状及其与工作压力源、工作倦怠之间的相互关系.[方法]采用一般资料调查表、职业认同量表、工作压力源量表及工作倦怠量表对6所军队医院1 653名护士进行调查.[结果]军队医院护士职业认同属中等水平,护士的职业认同与工作压力、职业倦怠呈负相关;逐步多元回归分析显示,工作压力源中管理及人际因子、工作倦怠中低个人成就感因子纳入回归方程,对军队医院护士职业认同影响较大.[结论]军队护理管理者应采取多途径、多方法提升护士职业认同感,减轻工作压力、工作倦怠带给护士职业生涯的消极作用.  相似文献

目的调查河北省综合医院护理工作环境的现状,并分析其与护理质量安全的相关性。方法采用护士工作环境量表和护理质量安全问卷对河北省20所二级、三级综合医院的1023名护士进行问卷调查。结果护理工作环境得分为(3.45±0.55)分,得分最高的维度为医护合作,最低的维度为充足的人力和物力。良好的医护合作可使护士对病区护理质量和出院后患者自我护理有正性影响;鼓励护士参与医院事务、重视高质量护理服务的基础工作,对护士的患者安全评价有正性影响。结论河北省综合医院护理工作环境总体较好,良好的护理工作环境有利于护理质量和患者安全的保障,医疗主管部门和护理管理者应当继续优化护理工作环境的各要素,以进一步提升护理质量和患者安全。  相似文献

目的比较传染病专科医院与综合医院护士在工作压力源、职业认同水平上的差异,为护理管理者和教育者提升护士职业认同水平提供指导和参考。方法采用护士职业认同量表与护士工作压力源量表,对天津市1所传染病专科医院、5所综合医院共87名护士进行问卷调查。结果传染病专科医院护士的工作压力高于综合医院护士,尤其在护理专业及工作方面、工作量及时间分配、工作环境及其资源、管理及人际关系4个因子方面(P均<0.05);但与综合医院护士在职业认同各维度与量表总得分上的差异均无统计学意义;职业认同与工作压力源呈负相关。结论传染病专科医院护士工作压力高于综合医院护士,工作压力对职业认同有负性影响。  相似文献

Nurse managers (NMs) and registered nurses (RNs) have key roles in developing the patient safety culture, as the nursing staff is the largest professional group in health‐care services. We explored their views on the patient safety culture in four acute care hospitals in Finland. The data were collected from NMs (n = 109) and RNs (n = 723) by means of a Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture instrument and analyzed statistically. Both groups recognized patient safety problems and critically evaluated error‐prevention mechanisms in the hospitals. RNs, in particular, estimated the situation more critically. There is a need to develop the patient safety culture of hospitals by discussing openly about them and learning from mistakes and by developing practices and mechanisms to prevent them. NMs have central roles in developing the safety culture at the system level in hospitals in order to ensure that nurses caring for patients do it safely.  相似文献

目的:研究基础护理试点工作开展现状及临床护理人员对"基础护理试点工作"的认知情况。方法:向苏州市3家医院400名护士发放调查问卷,问卷以《住院患者基础护理服务项目(试行)》文件为基础设计而成。结果:对开展基础护理试点工作持支持态度的护士占40.6%,认为基础护理工作应该由护士完成的占14.8%,对《住院患者基础护理服务项目(试行)》了解的护士占33.6%,认为开展基础护理试点工作有压力者占75.9%,主要压力来源和困难分别是担心工作量增加及护理人力资源缺乏。结论:护理人员对基础护理的责任意识和角色定位不容乐观,基础护理服务项目开展参差不齐,要转变观念,明确护士在基础护理工作中的角色与责任,加强护士专业素质教育与培训。  相似文献

Nurse managers’ challenges in project management Aim To analyse the challenges that nurse managers meet in project management. Background Project management done by nurse managers has a significant role in the success of projects conducted in work units. Methods The data were collected by open interviews (n = 14). The participants were nurse managers, nurses and public health nurses. Data analysis was carried out using qualitative content analysis. Results The three main challenges nurse managers faced in project management in health-care work units were: (1) apathetic organization and management, (2) paralysed work community and (3) cooperation between individuals being discouraged. Conclusions Nurse managers’ challenges in project management can be viewed from the perspective of the following paradoxes: (1) keeping up projects–ensuring patient care, (2) enthusiastic management–effective management of daily work and (3) supporting the work of a multiprofessional team–leadership of individual employees. Implications for nursing management It is important for nurse managers to learn to relate these paradoxes to one another in a positive way. Further research is needed, focusing on nurse managers’ ability to promote workplace spirituality, nurse managers’ emotional intelligence and their enthusiasm in small projects.  相似文献

目的:调查未来5年护理管理者岗前培训需求。方法:采用自制的护理管理人员岗前培训状况调查表和未来5年护理管理人员管理技能问卷,对全国77家医院进行问卷调查。结果:被调查对象中54 .2 %的护士长和45 .8%的护理部主任上岗前未参加岗前培训。有94.5 %的被调查者认为未来5年护理管理者上岗前进行培训十分必要。结论:未来5年护理管理者岗前需进行培训,且培训应分层次、多渠道、多形式,以逐渐形成制度化、规范化、系统化  相似文献
