Background
The root of Boehmeria spp (ramie) is a hepatoprotective Chinese herbal medicine. Medicinal properties vary between Boehmeria nivea var. nivea and Boehmeria nivea var. tenacissima, which are local species found in Taiwan. As commercial preparations may use either species, there is a need for a rapid and simple assay to identify variants for quality control. 相似文献2.

Background
Although there have been studies of the genetic risk factors in the development of stroke, there have been few investigations of role of genes in the cerebral response to ischemia. The brain responds to ischemia in a series of reactions that ultimately influence the volume of a stroke that, in general, correlates with disability. We hypothesize that polymorphisms in genes encoding proteins involved in these reactions could act as modifiers of this response and impact stroke volume. One of the pathways participating in the cerebral ischemic response involves reactive oxygen species which can cause oxidative damage to nucleic acids. DNA repair mechanisms are in place to protect against such damage and imply a role for DNA repair genes in the response of the brain to ischemia and are potential candidate genes for further investigation. 相似文献5.

Background
The present study compares the protective properties of aqueous extracts of six medicinal plants, Phyllanthus emblica, Terminalia chebula (black and yellow), Terminalia arjuna, Balsamodendron Mukul and Alium sativum against lipid per-oxidation in mice brain. Methods
The antioxidant activities were analyzed by lipid per-oxidation assay, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical assay, total antioxidant activity and metal chelation. Results
The extracts (fruits and bark) showed inhibition against thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) induced by pro-oxidant (10 µM FeSO4) in mice brain. Moreover, the free radical scavenging activities of the extracts was evaluated by the scavenging of DPPH radical (IC50, 23.23±1.2 µg/ml (Phyllanthus emblica), 20.24±0.9 µg/ml (Terminalia chebula yellow) and 17.33±1.1 µg/ml (Terminalia chebula black), 19.44±0.45 µg/ml (Terminalia arjuna), 56.59±2.1 µg/ml (Balsamodendron Mukul) and < 200 µg/ml (Alium sativum). Conclusion
The higher antioxidant and inhibitory effect of Terminalia chebula black in this study could be attributed to its significantly higher phenolic content, Fe(II) chelating ability, reducing ability and free radical scavenging activity. Therefore oxidative stress in brain could be potentially prevented by the intake of these plants. 相似文献11.

Background
Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) in the intestines is an inflammatory condition which activates leukocytes and reactive oxygen species (ROS) and leads to lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. Bilberry and chokeberry fruits are rich sources of polyphenols which may act as antioxidants and prevent lipid peroxidation. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) may improve microbial status in the intestines and increase the metabolic activity towards polyphenolic degradation. The aim of the study was to clarify antioxidative effects of bilberry and chokeberry fruits alone and with addition of a LAB-strain, Lactobacillus plantarum HEAL19, in an I/R-model in mice. 相似文献12.

Recent studies suggest that glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease in which secondary degenerative losses occur after primary insult by raised Intraocular pressure (IOP) or by other associated factors. It has been reported that polymorphisms in the IL1A and IL1B genes are associated with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG). The purpose of our study was to investigate the role of these polymorphisms in eastern Indian POAG patients. 相似文献15.

We have previously identified Urokinase Plasminogen Activator Receptor (PLAUR) as an asthma susceptibility gene. In the current study we tested the hypothesis that PLAUR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) determine baseline lung function and contribute to the development of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in smokers. 相似文献16.

Introduction
Intestinal microsporidiosis is recognised as an important cause of opportunistic parasitosis in immunocompromised patients, especially HIV-infected patients. Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the common causal agent. The diagnosis of intestinal microsporidiosis has usually based on microscopic detection of the spores of microsporidia species in stool samples, requires additional staining techniques as Modified Weber's trichrome stain. However, the detection of the spores can be difficult and species determination, which is important for defining the appropriate treatment, is impossible. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods have been successfully used for detection of microsporidian infections. They are more sensitive and are able to identify microsporidia species. The purpose of this study is to identify E. bieneusi to adapt treatment and assess the true prevalence of the intestinal microsporidiosis due to this species in compromised patients in Tunisia.Patients and methods
One hundred and eighteen stools from immunocompromised patients, with a symptomatology in favour of the intestinal microsporidiosis, were analysed using light microscopy after staining with Modified Weber's trichrome stain and PCR.Results
Only four were positive by Modified Weber's trichrome stain whereas eleven stools were positive by PCR, giving a prevalence of 20% in HIV-infected patients and 5,35% in human immunodeficiency virus-negative patients. Conclusion
This study confirms the usefulness of PCR in the diagnosis of the intestinal microsporidiosis due to E. bieneusi. Indeed, PCR has greater sensitivity than Modified Weber's trichrome stain and can identify the species of microsporidia in order to adapt the treatment. 相似文献19.
