Environmental and Health Effects Associated With Harmful Algal Bloom and Marine Algal Toxins in China

The frequency and scale of Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) and marine algal toxin incidents have been increasing and spreading in the past two decades, causing damages tO the marine environment and threatening human life through contaminated seafood. To better understand the effect of HAB and marine algal toxins on marine environment and human health in China, this paper overviews HAB occurrence and marine algal toxin incidents, as well as their environmental and health effects in this country. HAB has been increasing rapidly along the Chinese coast since the 1970s, and at least 512 documented HAB events have occurred from 1952 to 2002 in the Chinese mainland. It has been found that PSP and DSP toxins are distributed widely along both the northern and southern Chinese coasts.The HAB and marine algal toxin events during the 1990s in China were summarized, showing that the HAB and algal toxins resulted in great damages to local fisheries, marine culture, quality of marine environment, and human health. Therefore, to protect the coastal environment and human health,attention to HAB and marine algal toxins is urgently needed from the environmental and epidemiological view.

Principles of ethics review on traditional medicine and the practice of institute review board in China

As one of the significant parts of medical science research in China,the research on Chinese medicine(CM) reflects the essence of healthcare tradition in the country both theoretically and clinically, and embodies the values of Chinese culture.Therefore,in the practice of ethics review on CM research protocols,besides abiding by the contemporary prevalent international principles and guidelines on bioethics, which emphasizes the scientific and bioethical value of the study,we should also stress the CM theoretical background and relevant clinical experience in the framework of Chinese culture and values.In this paper, we went over the traits of CM clinical research and the experience from the practice of ethics review by the institution review board for bioethics,and then attempted to summarize the key points for the bioethics review to CM researches in China,so as to serve as reference for the bioethics review to traditional and alternative medicine researches.     

Isolation,identification,and antifungal susceptibility test for Kodamaea ohmeri:a case report on endocarditis

A 43-year-old man with a history of rheumatoid heart disease developed endocarditis. Blood culture showed endocarditis was caused by Kodamaea ohmeri and the susceptibility test showed the yeast species were susceptible to itraconazole, amphotericin B, and voriconazole, but susceptible-dose dependent to fluconazole, and resistant to 5-flucytosine. Treated with surgery and anti-fungi agents, the patient recovered from endocarditis. This is the first case of K. ohmeri fungemia found in Chinese from mainland. More and more evidence indicate that K. ohmeri is an important opportunistic pathogen for human beings

Three-dimensional Culture of Human Airway Epithelium in Matrigel for Evaluation of Human Rhinovirus C and Bocavirus Infections

Objective Newly identified human rhinovirus C (HRV-C) and human bocavirus (HBoV) cannot propagate in vitro in traditional cell culture models;thus obtaining knowledge about these viruses and developing related vaccines are difficult.Therefore,it is necessary to develop a novel platform for the propagation of these types of viruses.Methods A platform for culturing human airway epithelia in a three-dimensional (3D) pattern using Matrigel as scaffold was developed.The features of 3D culture were identified by immunochemical staining and transmission electron microscopy.Nucleic acid levels of HRV-C and HBoV in 3D cells at designated time points were quantitated by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Levels of cytokines,whose secretion was induced by the viruses,were measured by ELISA.Results Properties of bronchial-like tissues,such as the expression of biomarkers CK5,ZO-1,and PCK,and the development of cilium-like protuberances indicative of the human respiration tract,were observed in 3D-cultured human airway epithelial (HAE) cultures,but not in monolayer-cultured cells.Nucleic acid levels of HRV-C and HBoV and levels of virus-induced cytokines were also measured using the 3D culture system.Conclusion Our data provide a preliminary indication that the 3D culture model of primary epithelia using a Matrigel scaffold in vitro can be used to propagate HRV-C and HBoV.
