OBJECTIVES: In this in vitro study, the core-to-sealer ratios were calculated for 6 different gutta-percha techniques: Thermafil, JS Quick-Fill, Soft Core, Microseal, System B, and lateral condensation. The core consisted of gutta-percha or gutta-percha and carrier. STUDY DESIGN: The sealer-to-core ratios for the Thermafil, JS Quick-Fill, System B, and lateral condensation techniques were published previously. In this study, the sealer-to-core ratio for Microseal and Soft Core techniques was investigated. For this purpose, 20 teeth filled by using the Soft Core or the Microseal technique were embedded in resin and sectioned horizontally at 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm from the anatomic apex. Photographs were taken of each section, and the total area of the canals filled with core material or sealer was calculated. RESULTS: Once all results were compiled, it became clear that core techniques (Thermafil, JS Quick-Fill, and Soft Core) produced higher gutta-percha content than the Microseal, System B, and lateral condensation techniques (P <.05). The lateral condensation technique produced the least gutta-percha content (P <.05). CONCLUSION: Thermafil, JS Quick-Fill, and Soft Core were found to be superior to the Microseal, System B, and lateral condensation techniques in terms of the gutta-percha-to-sealer ratio.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the apical sealing of root canals obturated with different techniques. One hundred-six human mandibular incisors were submitted to instrumentation by means of the step-back technique. After instrumentation, one hundred teeth received an impermeable coating on the external surfaces of the crown and root (except for the area nearby the apical foramen). Afterwards, they were divided in five groups containing twenty elements each, according to the obturation technique employed: 1. lateral condensation with Kerr file; 2. continuous wave of condensation technique with System B; 3. thermoplasticized injectable gutta-percha technique with the Ultrafil system; 4. mechanically thermoplasticized gutta-percha with the JS Quick-Fill system and 5. thermoplasticized gutta-percha associated to a master cone with the Microseal system. The six remaining teeth were employed as negative and positive controls. After obturation, the access cavities were sealed and the teeth were immersed in aqueous 2% methylene blue dye for 72 hours at 37oC. After that, the teeth were longitudinally sectioned and the apical microleakage was evaluated in a stereomicroscope. The Microseal system presented the best apical sealing ability, followed by System B, JS Quick-Fill, Ultrafil and the lateral condensation technique. The statistical analysis of the results demonstrated that: 1. the Microseal system presented an apical sealing similar to System B and better than the other groups; 2. System B presented better apical sealing than the lateral condensation technique, being similar to the other groups; and 3. the lateral condensation, Ultrafil and JS Quick-Fill groups demonstrated similar sealing ability.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the distribution patterns of sealer relative to the gutta-percha and the canal wall following the use of different obturation techniques: vertical condensation, Obtura II, System B, SimpliFill, and Thermafil Plus; lateral condensation was used as a comparison. METHODS AND MATERIALS: One hundred five extracted single-rooted teeth were divided into 5 groups of 20 according to obturation technique, with 5 in the lateral condensation group. Instrumentation technique and sealer selection were based on the manufacturer's recommendations. Following obturation, teeth were stored for 4 months at 37 degrees C in 100% humidity. Roots were split longitudinally and halves were examined under a stereomicroscope (x 10) to determine the amount of sealer coverage between the gutta-percha and canal wall. Coverage was categorized as slight (0 to 1/3), low partial (1/3 to 2/3), high partial (2/3 to 9/10), and complete (9/10 to 10/10). RESULTS: Different techniques showed different patterns, but no obturation technique had sealer forming a continuous layer between the gutta-percha and canal wall. The vertical condensation group generally had low partial coverage. Obtura II was the only group to have slight coverage, which occurred in the coronal half. Coronal and apical halves in both the System B and Thermafil Plus groups had the most samples with high partial coverage. SimpliFill had the most samples with complete coverage in both the coronal and the apical portions. All lateral condensation samples showed low partial coverage. CONCLUSION: Sealer distribution patterns were incomplete and inconsistent, regardless of the obturation technique. No technique had sealer forming a continuous layer between the gutta-percha and canal wall.  相似文献

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term sealing ability (both apical and coronal) of an epoxy resin root canal sealer (AH26) when used with different gutta-percha obturation techniques. METHODOLOGY: Straight single-rooted teeth with mature apices were divided into 10 groups of 75 teeth and one group of 40 control teeth. Root canals were prepared according to the crown-down/step-back technique and using both 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and an EDTA paste. Root canals were obturated using cold lateral condensation, warm vertical condensation and hybrid condensation of gutta-percha; and with Thermafil and Soft-Core obturators. AH26 was used as the sealer in all cases. After root canal filling, each group was divided into five individual groups of 15 teeth. The first group of 15 teeth was kept for 1 day, the second for 1 week, the third for 4 months, the fourth for 6 months and the fifth for 12 months at 37 degrees C in vacutainers in 80% relative humidity. The teeth were immersed in India ink for 90 h, each root was split and sectioned longitudinally, and the maximum extent of leakage was measured using a stereomicroscope at x6 magnification. RESULTS: Leakage occurred whatever filling technique was combined with AH26. The number of teeth with gross leakage increased with time up to 4 months, but did not appear to increase between 6 and 12 months storage. The degree of apical leakage and the number of leaking teeth in the Soft-Core obturator groups was significantly higher than all four other gutta-percha obturation techniques. Up to 4 months the degree of coronal leakage and the number of leaking teeth in the Thermafil groups was significantly higher than the other gutta-percha obturation techniques, except for Soft-Core. In the Soft-Core obturator groups the degree of coronal leakage and the number of leaking teeth was significantly higher than the other gutta-percha obturation techniques, except for Thermafil at all evaluation times. CONCLUSION: The hybrid gutta-percha condensation technique was superior to the other four obturation techniques in respect of apical leakage. Coronal leakage was significantly greater during the first 4 months for the Thermafil system as compared to the three condensation techniques; coronal leakage was significantly greater at all time periods for the Soft-Core system. There were no significant differences between the Thermafil and the Soft-core system.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate in vitro the apical seal of root canals prepared with a new rotary system, Anatomic Endodontic Technology (AET) and filled with a methacrylate based endodontic sealer and a single gutta-percha cone and a lateral condensation technique, using the methacrylate based endodontic sealer/filler or Grossman's cement. The root canals of 45 freshly extracted human maxillary anterior teeth were prepared and then randomly assigned to three groups of 15 teeth each. After cleaning and shaping the teeth were obturated as follows: in group 1 the canals were filled with a methacrylate based sealer and a single gutta-percha cone; in group 2 the canals were filled using a lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha and the methacrylate based sealer; and in group 3, the canals were filled by means of lateral condensation of gutta-percha and Grossman's cement (control group). The specimens were stored in 100% relative humidity at 37 degrees C for 72 h, after which the coronal portion and the root surface of each tooth was covered with three layers of nail varnish and a final layer of sticky wax. After immersion in 2% methylene blue dye for 7 days, the specimens were imbedded in clear orthodontic resin and sectioned. Dye penetration was evaluated by an independent investigator using a stereo microscope. The results demonstrated that more pronounced leakage occurred in root canals obturated with the lateral condensation technique and Grossman's cement (p < 0.05). The least amount of dye leakage was observed for group 1 and 2 in which the methacrylate based sealer was used, either with a single gutta-percha cone or with lateral condensation of gutta-percha.  相似文献

Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess long-term coronal leakage in root fillings achieved by 2 gutta-percha techniques using 2 calcium hydroxide-containing sealers. The root canals of 90 single-rooted teeth with mature apices were prepared chemo-mechanically. The teeth were placed randomly into four experimental groups (n = 20) and obturated with either lateral condensation of cold gutta-percha or a thermo-plasticized gutta-percha delivery system, JS Quickfill, using Sealapex or Apexit as the sealer. A further five teeth were placed in each of negative or positive control groups. After root filling the teeth were sectioned at the cementoenamel junction and stored in saline solution at 37° for 1 yr. Coronal leakage was then determined with an India ink tracer (using a reduced pressure model) and a clearing technique. The extent of coronal leakage was measured at ×6 magnification. Non-parametric analysis showed that there was significantly more leakage with the thermally softened gutta-percha technique than with lateral condensation (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in leakage between the groups obturated with lateral condensation (p>0.005) but, with the thermoplasticized technique, there was more leakage with the sealer Sealapex (p<0.05).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of three obturation methods to seal root canals prepared using 0.06 taper rotary instruments. Forty-five extracted human single-rooted teeth were instrumented with 0.06 taper Profile nickel-titanium rotary files and randomly divided into three experimental groups containing 15 teeth each. The first group was obturated using the System B technique with 0.06 taper standardised gutta-percha points, the second group was obturated using the System B technique with non-standardised MF gutta-percha points, the third group was obturated by cold lateral condensation technique using standardised 0.02 taper master gutta-percha points. Apical leakage of the roots was evaluated by dye penetration using a stereomicroscope after sectioning the roots. The group obturated using System B and 0.06 taper gutta-percha points showed the least dye penetration. However, the difference in the linear extent of dye penetration was not statistically significant.  相似文献

Thermafil retreatment using a new "System B" technique or a solvent   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The solid plastic carrier in the Thermafil obturation system must be removed to facilitate retreatment. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and time required to retreat canals obturated with Thermafil with plastic carriers using a new technique based on the System B HeatSource or a solvent. Fifty-two extracted human mandibular premolars with single canals were instrumented and then obturated with Thermafil with plastic carriers. After 2 wk storage at 22 degrees C and 100% humidity, they were randomly divided into 2 groups of 26 teeth each. Group 1 teeth were retreated using chloroform and hand files, whereas teeth in group 2 were retreated with a new technique using the System B HeatSource. The end point of retreatment was defined as complete removal of the plastic carrier. The time required for retreatment was recorded. Then, the apical 5 mm segment of each root was sectioned horizontally at 1 mm intervals and each section digitally imaged. The total area of the canal and the area of the canal occupied by gutta-percha and sealer were measured using NIH image software. Data were analyzed using an unpaired t test. The mean time for retrieval of the plastic carrier was significantly less for the System B technique (1.8 min) than for the solvent technique (3.6 min) (p < 0.001). The difference between the two groups in the amount of filling material (carrier, gutta-percha, and sealer) removed was not significant (p > 0.05).  相似文献

The teeth were divided into 3 groups (A, B, C) of 20 teeth and were obturated using the 3 thermoplasticized gutta-percha techniques. Group A: single phase with sealer; group B: sectional technique without sealer; and group C: sectional technique with sealer. The obturated teeth were immersed in India ink for 3 days followed by clearing procedures. The teeth were then examined under a stereo microscope and the linear leakage was recorded. Statistical unpaired Student's t-tests showed significantly less dye penetration in teeth obturated using the sectional technique with sealer (group C) than in teeth obturated with the single-phase technique with sealer (group A) or the sectional technique without sealer (group B).  相似文献

Abstract— This study compared the apical sealing ability, obturation time and extrusion of gutta-percha and sealer when root canals were ohturated using either cold lateral condensation or one of the three methods using thermoplasticised gutta-percha (Alpha Seal, Thermafil or JS Quick Fill) in vitro . One hundred and thirty-one root canals from 78 extracted human teeth were used; 116 canals were divided into five groups so that they were balanced with respect to prepared canal anatomy, and the remaining 15 canals were used as positive and negative controls. The canals in the first four groups were prepared with hand files using the step-down technique to a standard apical size and flare. The last group was prepared using engine-driven rotary nickel-titanium files (McSpad-den) to a similar apical size and Hare. One of the four obturating techniques was used to fill the canals in each of the first four groups. The fifth group was obturated using the Alpha Seal technique. The roots were immersed in india ink, demineralised and rendered transparent to assess the extent of maximum linear dye penetration. The Alpha Seal groups had the highest number of specimens without any leakage. There was a significant difference in the proportions of specimens that did not leak when the Alpha Seal ( P <0.01) and cold lateral condensation groups ( P <0.05) were compared with JS Quick Fill. Cold lateral condensation had a higher proportion of specimens with leakage in canals with curvature greater than 20' than in canals with curvatures less than 20 ( P <0.05). The curvature of canals had no effect on the sealing ability of the other techniques. The method of canal preparation had no effect on the sealing ability of Alpha Seal. Alpha Seal, Thermafil andJS Quick Fill were significantly quicker to perform than cold lateral condensation.  相似文献

An in vitro investigation was performed to assess the extent of apical dye leakage in relation to root fillings made by Thermafil obturators and the lateral condensation of gutta-percha in extracted human teeth under conditions of passive dye penetration, centrifugation, a vacuum technique and an increased air pressure technique. One hundred and twenty-eight extracted teeth were selected and prepared. The specimens were allocated into eight closely matched experimental groups. Four groups were obturated with Thermafil obturators and four with the lateral condensation technique. Microleakage was assessed after exposing one group of specimens from each of the obturation techniques to each of the four dye penetration systems using India ink as the leakage detector. The teeth were demineralized and cleared prior to examination and the maximum dye penetration for each specimen was recorded. The statistical analysis on transformed data revealed no significant differences between the four microleakage techniques and no differences between the two obturation techniques.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the sealability and radiographic quality of root fillings in extracted teeth by using lateral condensation of gutta-percha or alpha-phase gutta-percha in conjunction with a single gutta-percha cone. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 108 single-rooted teeth were divided into 2 groups of 54 teeth based on canal shape. Canals were prepared to a minimum 0.055 taper and enlarged to a size 35 at the working distance. Irrigation was done with 17% EDTA and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) to remove smear layer. One group was obturated by using cold lateral condensation of gutta-percha; the other group was obturated with thermomechanically compacted alpha-phase gutta-percha and a single cone of gutta-percha. Apical extrusion of sealer or gutta-percha was recorded. Sealability of each technique was assessed by dye penetration. The radiographic quality of obturation was also determined. RESULTS: Root canals filled with alpha-phase gutta-percha and a single cone had significantly more extrusion of sealer than canals filled by lateral condensation. Lateral condensation achieved significantly better scores for radiographic quality. There was no significant difference between the 2 filling techniques in terms of apical or coronal leakage. CONCLUSIONS: Thermomechanically condensed alpha-phase gutta-percha used in conjunction with a single gutta-percha cone had poorer radiographic quality than laterally condensed gutta-percha.  相似文献

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the ability of lateral compaction of gutta-percha and of five thermoplasticized gutta-percha filling techniques to obturate simulated lateral canals. Sixty extracted single-rooted human teeth were instrumented at the working length to a #35 file before creating three simulated lateral canals on the mesial and distal surfaces of the root, one in each third, using a #15 engine reamer. After enlarging root canals to a #45 file, the teeth were randomly divided into six equal groups of 10 and obturated according to the following techniques: lateral compaction of gutta-percha (group A), hybrid technique (group B), Ultrafil (group C), Obtura II (group D), System B + Obtura II (group E), and Thermafil (group F). AH26 was used as the sealer. A greater number of simulated lateral canals were obturated when Ultrafil, Thermafil, and System B + Obtura II were used, in comparison with canals obturated with the hybrid technique, Obtura II, or lateral compaction of gutta-percha. This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found between results obtained in the obturation of simulated lateral canals in the different thirds of the root (p > 0.05).  相似文献

AIM: The aim of this project was to evaluate and compare the radiographic quality and sealability of root fillings in extracted human teeth using lateral condensation of gutta-percha or multiphase gutta-percha obturation (Alphaseal). METHODOLOGY: A total of 108 freshly extracted human, mature single-rooted teeth were divided into two identical groups of 54 teeth on the basis of root canal shape. The canals were prepared to a minimum 0.055 taper and enlarged to size 35 at the apex. All root canals were flushed with 17% EDTA solution and 2.5% NaOCl to remove the dentinal smear layer. The canals of one group were obturated using cold lateral condensation of gutta-percha and the canals of the other group were filled using a warm multiphase gutta-percha obturation technique. The extrusion of sealer and/or gutta-percha through the apex of the teeth was recorded using a simple yes/no scheme. The sealability of each technique was assessed by a dye penetration method. The radiographic quality of obturation was determined for each canal using a four-point scale. RESULTS: Root canals filled by multiphase obturation had significantly more extrusion of sealer (P < 0.001) and gutta-percha (P < 0.001) than canals filled by lateral condensation. Canals filled by multiphase gutta-percha obturation had significantly less apical dye leakage than those obturated by lateral condensation (P < 0.05). Lateral condensation achieved significantly better scores for radiographic quality than multiphase obturation from the bucco-lingual view (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Under laboratory conditions multiphase gutta-percha had better sealability but poorer radiographic quality than lateral condensation.  相似文献

An evaluation of the Thermafil endodontic obturation technique.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Thermafil endodontic obturation technique and to compare it with laterally condensed gutta-percha. Thirty-seven maxillary central incisors were similarly prepared and divided into groups. Seventeen were obturated with Thermafil and 17 with lateral condensation. Three served as controls. After vacuum staining, all teeth were cleared and apical dye penetration was evaluated by two independent observers. Average leakage values were 0.24 mm and 1.32 mm for Thermafil and 0.47 mm and 1.18 mm for lateral condensation. There was no significant difference between the techniques, although a difference between evaluators was noted. Final results point to the relative subjectivity of in vitro leakage studies. When comparing the obturation times of both techniques, the Thermafil technique averaged 2 min 56 s while lateral condensation took 3 min 26 s. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference in obturation times.  相似文献

Adaptation and placement of alpha-phase gutta-percha delivered with a plastic core-carrier, Thermafil, was compared to the lateral condensation of gutta-percha in a specific tooth model. Fifty-one mandibular molar roots with separate canals, patent canal orifices and curvatures greater than 15 degrees were cleaned and shaped with K-files and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite to a size 30 at the apex, and flared with Hedstrom flies to create a continuously tapering funnel preparation. Canals were randomly obturated with Sealapex root canal sealer and either alpha-phase gutta-percha on a plastic Thermafil carrier, or standard beta-phase gutta-percha with lateral condensation. Roots were radiographed from the proximal and evaluated by three examiners, based on established criteria for overall material adaptation, apical adaptation, and filling material extrusion. Thermafil provided a statistically significant better over-alt canal obturation (P < 0.001), while, in the apical third, both techniques were not significantly different (P > 0.05). When the apical orifice was patent there was a significant propensity for the extrusion of filling materials beyond the apex (P < 0.001) with the Thermafil technique.  相似文献

目的对比评价三种根管充填技术的根尖封闭能力。方法收集2011年10月至2012年5月中国医科大学附属口腔医院口腔颌面外科门诊因正畸或牙周病拔除的新鲜离体单根管牙34颗,根管清理后用机用ProTaDer镍钛锉经Crown—Down技术预备,然后随机分为A、B、C三组。A组(11颗)采用冷牙胶侧方加压充填技术充填根管,B组(10颗)采用超声侧方加压充填技术充填根管,c组(13颗)采用连续波热牙胶垂直充填技术充填根管。所有实验牙均使用AHPlus根充糊剂。根管充填后的各组实验牙采用染料渗透法检测根尖微渗漏的发生情况,体式显微镜下测量自根尖孔向冠方的染料渗透长度,采用SPSS11.5统计软件包对测量数据进行分析。结果A组与B、c组的根尖微渗漏数值间差异有统计学意义(P〈0.05),B组与c组的根尖微渗漏数值间差异无统计学意义(P〉0.05)。结论超声侧方加压充填技术和连续波热牙胶垂直充填技术的根管封闭能力优于冷牙胶侧方加压技术,而前两种充填技术的根管封闭能力无明显差别。  相似文献

Forty straight canals of maxillary canines and 40 curved canals in 20 mesial roots of mandibular molars were instrumented and randomly assigned to two groups of 40 canals each. For the experimental group, the canals were obturated using the Thermafil obturation technique. Lateral condensation was used for the obturation of the control group. Kerr pulp canal sealer was used in both group. The specimens were stored in 100% humidity for 1 wk. All teeth were suspended in black India ink for 14 days and decalcified in 5% nitric acid over a 2-day period. The teeth were then dehydrated in a graded series of alcohol to 100%. Methyl salycilate was used to clear and store the teeth for 48 h. Linear dye leakage measurements showed that canines obturated with the lateral condensation technique leaked significantly less than those obturated using the Thermafil technique (p = 0.02). The difference was not statistically significant in the molar roots.  相似文献

This in vitro dye leakage study examined the influence of apical root resection and reverse amalgam fillings on the apical seal of root canals obturated with Thermafil. Fifty human canine teeth were instrumented and obturated with either laterally condensed gutta-percha or Thermafil using Roth's zinc oxide-eugenol Type I regular sealer. After 24 h, one of the following additional procedures was performed on 30 of the teeth: 2-mm apical resection, 4-mm apical resection, and 2-mm apical resection plus reverse amalgam filling 2 mm in depth and diameter. The external root surfaces were coated with enamel paint and the teeth were exposed to 1% methylene blue dye at 37 degrees C for 2 wk. The roots were split longitudinally and the depth of linear dye penetration was measured through a stereozoom microscope. Statistical analysis showed no significant differences in the linear dye penetration among the various groups of teeth.  相似文献
