ObjectiveHere we tested the hypothesis that in normal weight subjects, attentional cortical responses to the enlargement of faces are related to features of body weight, as a basis for future studies on the role of neurocognitive mechanisms in eating and weight disorders.MethodsElectroencephalographic data were recorded in 15 normal weight adults during a visual “oddball” paradigm. The subjects were given frequent (70%) and rare (30%) stimuli depicting faces (FACE), food (FOOD), and landscapes (CONTROL). The task was to click the mouse after the rare stimuli. These stimuli depicted the same frequent stimuli graphically dilated by 25% along the horizontal axis. Analysis of bioelectrical impedance indexed subjects’ body fat percentage. Cortical attentional responses were probed by the difference between positive event-related potentials peaking around 200–600 ms post-stimulus for the frequent minus rare stimuli (P300). LORETA estimated P300 cortical sources.ResultsMain results showed that in the FACE condition, there was a negative correlation between the body fat percentage and the reaction time to the rare stimuli, and a positive correlation between the body fat percentage and the amplitude of prefrontal P300 sources (p < 0.05).ConclusionsThese results disclose a relationship between body fat and prefrontal attentional processes to body image in normal weight adults.SignificanceThe present study motivates future research testing the hypothesis that this relationship might be altered in patients with eating and weight disorders.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo examine whether the occipito-temporal visual N700 component of the event-related potential is sensitive to stimulus probabilities.MethodsP1, N1, P3, and, in particular, the occipito-temporal N700 component of the event-related potential were analysed in response to frequent and rare non-target letters of a continuous performance task in 200 healthy adolescents. Additionally, amplitude habituation with time was examined for the occipito-temporal N700 and N1 components.ResultsThe visual P1, N1, and occipito-temporal N700 components were significantly larger in response to rare letters than to frequent letters, whereas the P3 component demonstrated no amplitude difference. Over time, the occipito-temporal N700 amplitude decreased in response to the rare letters, while the N1 amplitude increased, to both, frequent and rare letters.ConclusionsThis study provides first evidence that the visual occipito-temporal N700 is sensitive to stimulus probabilities, suggesting an enhanced post-processing of rare stimuli in secondary visual areas. The distinct habituation patterns of occipito-temporal N700 and N1 amplitudes distinguish repetition effects on stimulus post-processing (N700) from those on perception (N1).SignificanceThe enhanced N700 component to rare stimuli might reflect an orienting response and underlying attentional processes. BackgroundAlthough some studies have reported significant reductions in food cravings following the single-session of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), there is little research on the effects of multi-session of rTMS on food consumption and body weight in obese subjects.ObjectiveWe conducted 4-week randomized, sham-controlled, single-blind, parallel-group trial to examine the effect of rTMS on body weight in obese adults.MethodsForty-three obese patients (body mass index [BMI] ≥25 kg/m2) aged between 18 and 70 years were randomized to the sham or real treatment group (21 in the TMS group and 22 in the sham treatment group). A total of 8 sessions of rTMS targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) was provided over a period of 4 weeks. The primary outcome measure was weight change in kilograms from baseline to 4 weeks. Secondary endpoints included changes in anthropometric measures, cardiovascular risk factors, food intake, and appetite.ResultsParticipants in the rTMS group showed significantly greater weight loss from baseline following the 8 session of rTMS (−2.75 ± 2.37 kg vs. 0.38 ± 1.0 kg, p < 0.01). Consistent with weight loss, there was a significant reduction in fat mass and visceral adipose tissue at week 4 in the rTMS group compared with the control group (p < 0.01). After the 8 sessions of rTMS, the TMS group consumed fewer total kilocalories and carbohydrates per day than the control group (p < 0.05).Conclusions8 sessions of HF rTMS delivered to the left DLPFC were effective in inducing weight loss and decreasing food intake in obese patients.Trial registrationClinical trial registered with the Clinical Trials Registry at http://cris.cdc.go.kr (KCT0002548).  相似文献

Interhemispheric differences of the N100 latency in visual evoked potentials have been used to estimate interhemispheric transfer time (e.g., Saron & Davidson, 1989). Recent work has also suggested that the P300 component could reflect the efficacy of interhemispheric transmission (Polich & Hoffman, 1998). The purpose of the present study was to study the differential role of the corpus callosum (CC) and anterior commissure (AC) in the interhemispheric propagation of these two electrophysiological components. Thus, the amplitude and latency distribution of the N100 and P300 components were analyzed using high-density electrical mapping in a subject with agenesis of CC but preservation of AC, a subject with agenesis of both CC and AC, and 10 neurologically intact control subjects. The task consisted of a modified visual oddball paradigm comprising one frequent and two rare stimuli, one presented on the same and the other on the opposite side of the frequent stimulus. Interhemispheric differences in latency were found for the N100 component in controls. However, in the acallosal subjects, this component was not identifiable in the indirectly stimulated hemisphere. In controls, no interhemispheric differences were observed in the distribution of the P300 latency and amplitude to rare and frequent stimuli. The distribution of the P300 amplitude in the acallosal subject with an AC was identical to that of the controls, whereas in the acallosal subject lacking the AC, the amplitude was greater in the hemisphere receiving the frequent stimuli, regardless of the visual hemifield in which the rare stimuli were presented. In both acallosal subjects, hemispheric differences in the P300 latency were observed, the latencies being shorter in the hemisphere directly stimulated for all categories of stimuli. These results suggest that the interhemispheric transfer of both the N100 and P300 components relies on the integrity of cortical commissures. Possible P300 generator sources are discussed.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to assess the usability of event-related-potentials (ERPs) during sustained, focused, and divided attention tasks as biomarkers for cognitive decline in HIV patients.MethodsEEG was acquired using a mobile/wireless 9-channel system in 39 persons with HIV, with well-controlled immune function and 63 healthy control participants (HCs) during three ERP tasks: sustained attention, focused attention, and divided attention.ResultsThe HIV-group evidenced smaller late positive potential (LPP) and larger P200 amplitudes across the tasks compared to the HC group. P200 amplitude was correlated (r = 0.56) with the estimated duration of infection. Both groups showed higher P200 and LPP amplitudes in response to infrequent stimuli; this effect was not significantly different between groups. In the sustained attention task, the HIV-group showed significantly slower reaction time than controls while maintaining the same level of accuracy. In the divided attention task, the HIV-group showed a trend towards faster/less accurate responses.ConclusionsHIV seropositive participants receiving anti-retroviral treatment (ART) demonstrated significantly larger P200 amplitude during three different attention tasks. This may reflect attentional deficits characterized by over-attending to non-target/distracting stimuli.SignificanceThese findings demonstrate the potential benefits of EEG-ERP metrics derived from attention tasks as neurocognitive biomarkers for HIV. This approach may reveal underlying causes of attentional deficits in HIV patients.  相似文献

Visual p300 effects beyond symptoms in concussed college athletes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In order to assess whether cerebral anomalies may be observed in the absence of clinical symptoms, the current study compared the effects of concussions on attentional capacities (reaction times, accuracy) and Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) in concussed athletes with (n = 10) or without (n = 10) symptoms as well as in athletes who never had a concussion (n = 10). The P300 response was recorded from 28 electrodes during a modified visual oddball paradigm. Participants were instructed to press a key upon the appearance of the frequent stimuli as well as when a rare nontarget stimulus followed the frequent one. The other key was to be pressed when the subsequent rare stimuli (rare target) appeared until a frequent one reappeared. The symptomatic athletes displayed longer reaction times than the other two groups of athletes. The P300 amplitude to the rare target stimuli was significantly more attenuated in the symptomatic athletes than in the other two groups. Moreover, the P300 amplitude varied inversely with the severity of post-concussion symptoms but was not influenced by time elapsed since injury. Although the clinical significance of the P300 differences shown by the symptomatic athletes is still uncertain, the results do indicate that symptom severity may be a crucial indicator of functional impairments following mild traumatic brain injury.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe aim of this work was to study the oscillatory changes during target and distractor stimuli processing. We focused mainly on responses after distractor stimuli in the prefrontal cortex and their possible relation to our previous results from the basal ganglia.MethodsFive epilepsy surgery candidates with implanted depth electrodes performed a three-stimulus paradigm. The frequent stimulus (70%; without required response) was a small blue circle, the target stimulus (15%; with motor response) was a larger blue circle, and the distractor stimulus (15%; without required response) was a checkerboard. The SEEG signals from 404 electrode contacts were analysed using event-related de/synchronization (ERD/S) methodology.ResultsThe main response to the target stimuli was ERD in the alpha and low beta bands, predominantly in the motor control areas, parietal cortex and hippocampus. The distractor stimuli were generally accompanied by an early theta frequency band power increase most markedly in the prefrontal cortex.ConclusionsDifferent ERD/S patterns underline attentional shifting to rare target (“go”) and distractor (“no-go”) stimuli.SignificanceAs an increase in lower frequency band power is considered to be a correlate of active inhibition, the prefrontal structures seem to be essential for inhibition of non-required movements.  相似文献

ObjectiveAn objective assessment of sensory and sensuo-cognitive function, based on physiological signals rather than on the behavioral response of a patient, is often advisable, albeit challenging. Evoked potentials are frequently used as an objective measure, but usually fail to detect defects beyond primary sensory areas, including those of psychogenic origin. Here we assess whether the event-related P300 component may be used to measure “cognitive” visual acuity.MethodsA visual oddball paradigm was used to elicit P300 responses in subjects with normal or artificially blurred vision. Probe stimuli consisted of infrequently presented gratings with spatial frequencies in the range of 2.2–16.2 cycles per degree, which could be either target or non-target stimuli depending on their orientation. Frequent stimuli were homogeneously grey fields.ResultsWithout blur, rare stimuli of all spatial frequencies produced reliable P300 responses. Blur abolished the P300 to fine gratings consistently in 10 of 11 subjects. The drop in P300 amplitude was steep, rather than gradual, between visible and invisible gratings.ConclusionThe P300 is sensitive to identify the resolution threshold and thus may serve as a tool for estimating acuity in cases of visual impairments.SignificanceThe study presents a tool for the objective assessment of acuity in cases of higher-level visual impairments. ObjectiveTo verify whether central fatigue in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) is associated with the presence of a more severe selective cognitive impairment.MethodsTwenty-four PD patients without fatigue-PDnF, 11 with fatigue-PDF and 32 healthy volunteers underwent a P300 novelty task that elicits both the P3a and the P3b components.ResultsP3b latency was significantly longer in both PDF and PDnF than in controls. P3b amplitudes were comparable between groups. P3a latency and P3a amplitude were respectively significantly longer and lower in PDF than in either PDnF or controls.ConclusionThe ability to discriminate the significant target stimulus, which requires the integrity of the dorsal attentional network and top-down control mechanisms, is compromised in parkinsonian patients irrespective of the presence of fatigue. PDF exhibited a difficulty in attentional orienting to salient novel stimuli, a bottom-up attentional control mechanism that is related to the functioning of the ventral attention network.SignificanceFatigue seems to be specifically related to an impairment in the processing of novel stimuli, which is an essential part of adaptive decision-making behavior.  相似文献

P300 in neglect     
ObjectiveAttentional deficits have been thought to underlie hemispatial neglect. The present study investigates this using the P300 component of the event-related potential, which is assumed to reflect the allocation of attention.MethodsWe recorded the P300 and oddball detection performance from patients with neglect. Infrequent targets appeared either in the affected contralesional or the unaffected ipsilesional visual hemifield.ResultsContralesional targets produced weaker average P300 responses than ipsilesional ones, but stronger responses than when only distractors were presented. In the affected hemifield, the difference in P300 amplitude between identified and missed targets was correlated with the miss rate. The number of missed contralesional targets for a given participant was positively correlated with the time required for completion of standard neglect tests.ConclusionsThe P300 not only reflects a general attentional impairment in neglect, but also varies as a function of the participants’ awareness of individual stimuli.SignificanceThe findings reflect an important link between attentional dysfunction and impaired stimulus processing in neglect and extinction.  相似文献

Is conscious perception of emotional face expression related to enhanced cortical responses? Electroencephalographic data (112 channels) were recorded in 15 normal adults during the presentation of cue stimuli with neutral, happy or sad schematic faces (duration: “threshold time” inducing about 50% of correct recognitions), masking stimuli (2 s), and go stimuli with happy or sad schematic faces (0.5 s). The subjects clicked left (right) mouse button in response to go stimuli with happy (sad) faces. After the response, they said “seen” or “not seen” with reference to previous cue stimulus. Electroencephalographic data formed visual event‐related potentials (ERPs). Cortical sources of ERPs were estimated by LORETA software. Reaction time to go stimuli was generally shorter during “seen” than “not seen” trials, possibly due to covert attention and awareness. The cue stimuli evoked four ERP components (posterior N100, N170, P200, and P300), which had similar peak latency in the “not seen” and “seen” ERPs. Only N170 amplitude showed differences in amplitude in the “seen” versus “not seen” ERPs. Compared to the “not seen” ERPs, the “seen” ones showed prefrontal, premotor, and posterior parietal sources of N170 higher in amplitude with the sad cue stimuli and lower in amplitude with the neutral and happy cue stimuli. These results suggest that nonconscious and conscious processing of schematic emotional facial expressions shares a similar temporal evolution of cortical activity, and conscious processing induces an early enhancement of bilateral cortical activity for the schematic sad facial expressions (N170). BACKGROUND: This study investigated attentional allocation in 39 Vietnam combat veterans, 25 with and 14 without posttraumatic stress disorder, assessing P300 amplitudes and latencies during both three-tone and novelty "oddball" tasks. METHODS: The three-tone oddball task consisted of three stimuli: frequent tones (85%), rare target tones (7.5%), and rare distractor tones (7.5%). The novelty oddball task was identical to the three-tone task except that the rare distractor tones were replaced with nonrepeating novel sounds (7.5%). RESULTS: Combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder showed significant P300 amplitude enhancements at frontal sites in response to distracting stimuli during the novelty but not during the three-tone oddball tasks. There were no amplitude differences in target tones during either task. CONCLUSIONS: The data suggest that combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder demonstrate P300 responses consistent with a heightened orientation response to novel, distracting stimuli. This finding is consistent both with the clinical presentation of the disorder and with theoretical notions that individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder demonstrate information-processing biases towards vague or potentially threatening stimuli.  相似文献

Abstract

P300 Event Related Potentials components (P300a and P300b) were investigated using an auditory oddball paradigm (with abutton press response to target stimuli) in 15 Parkinson’s disease patients and 50 normal controls whilst simultaneously measuring electrodermal activity. Cluster analysis showed that the first 10 target stimuli generated the largest skin conductance responses. The first 10 single-trial ERP epochs were therefore analysed as an ERP sub-average for each individual. The P300a component (associated with the automatic ‘Orienting Reflex’) was expected to be most prevalent in this sub-average (compared with subaverages of subsequent blocks of 10 target stimuliJ. Twenty-nine out of50 normal controls (58%) elicited a P300a in the first 10 target sub-averages compared with only 2 out of 15 Parkinson’s disease subjects (J 3%). The conventional P300b component (associated with controlled processing) was found to be significantly delayed for all sub-averages for the Parkinson’s disease group when compared with controls. ObjectiveObese subjects without eating disorders were characterised by poor electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha rhythms during resting-state eye-closed condition (Babiloni et al., 2011b). Is this true also for the desynchronisation of alpha rhythms during resting-state eyes opening?MethodsEEG data were recorded in 15 underweight, 20 normal-weight, and 18 overweight/obese subjects during resting-state eyes-closed and -open conditions. EEG sources were estimated by LORETA for alpha 1 (8–10.5 Hz) and alpha 2 (10.5–13 Hz). The alpha desynchronisation was calculated as the difference eyes-open minus -closed condition.ResultsThe occipital alpha 1 desynchronisation was lower in overweight/obese and underweight subjects compared with normal-weight subjects (p < 0.000005). The same was true for parietal, occipital and temporal alpha 2 (10.5–13 Hz) desynchronisation (p < 0.000002). The parietal and temporal alpha 1 desynchronisation was lower in overweight/obese than in normal-weight subjects (p < 0.00001). These effects spatially matched those observed in the resting-state eyes-closed condition.ConclusionSubjects with abnormal weight and normal eating behaviour are characterised by poor alpha desynchronisation during resting-state eyes opening.SignificanceObese subjects without eating disorders show abnormal mechanisms of cortical neural synchronisation and desynchronisation of alpha rhythms in the resting state condition.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate EEG changes during an auditory odd-ball task while walking (dual-task) in young adults, older adults, and patients with Parkinson's disease.Methods11 young adults, 10 older adults, and 10 patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) performed an auditory oddball task during standing and walking on a treadmill, while wearing a wireless EEG cap. The amplitude and latency of P300 were compared between groups and within conditions using linear mix model analysis. Gait was evaluated using wearable sensors and cognition was assessed using the Color Trail Test.ResultsP300 latency became longer during walking in all groups (p = 0.005). During walking, older adults (p = 0.005) and patients with PD (p = 0.001) showed prolonged P300 latency compared to young adults. Significant task by group interaction was found in P300 amplitude (p = 0.008). Patients with PD demonstrated reduced P300 amplitude during walking compared to standing (p = 0.023). Among all subjects, better motor and cognitive performance correlated with shorter P300 latency (r = 0.457, p = 0.014 and r = 0.431, p = 0.040, respectively).ConclusionsThese findings provide direct evidence of the physiological recruitment of attentional networks during walking and their impact by ageing and disease.SignificanceThis study is the first to report on changes in P300 latency and amplitude during dual-task oddball walking in older adults and patients with PD.  相似文献

Objective

To analyze brain event-related responses in heroin-dependent patients under different emotional conditions, in order to determine the influence of specific emotional loading on information processing in drug addicts.

Methods

Fifteen male heroin-dependent patients, matched to 11 male healthy individuals, were exposed to emotion-triggering slides designed to elicit neutral, pleasant or unpleasant emotions, while ERPs were obtained by means of an auditory oddball paradigm. Evoked potential analysis consisted of measuring the amplitude, latency, and topographic distribution (mapped from 19 scalp sites) of the early and late latency component waveforms.

Results

Both groups showed large-amplitude, long-latency, and positive-polarity responses to odd stimuli under all emotional conditions. A within-group comparison between the three emotional conditions showed that the control group had smaller P300 amplitudes under pleasant stimulation; drug addicts showed no differences between all three emotional conditions. Between-group analysis revealed smaller P300 amplitudes in drug addicts than in controls, both for unpleasant and neutral emotional conditions, but this was only significant for some electrode sites. Brain electrical activity mapping at P300 showed that high activation is less spread in the brain areas of drug addicts than in controls for unpleasant and neutral emotional conditions.

Conclusion

Drug addicts have deficits in extracting relevant information from sensory stimuli under different emotional conditions, particularly under unpleasant and neutral stimulation. Decreased P300 in controls under pleasant stimulation is interpreted as a result of an attentional bias mechanism that directs attentional resources to environmental stimuli of positive emotional valence, in contrast to drug addicts where there is no such effect.  相似文献

We studied somatosensory event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to rare target, frequent nontarget and rare nontarget stimuli in 12 healthy subjects. Compared with the corresponding peaks following frequent stimuli, the responses elicited by rare target stimuli showed higher amplitudes for N70, P100 and N140 components and those evoked by rare nontarget stimuli showed higher amplitudes for N70 and N140 components. The P300 component following rare nontarget stimuli was shorter in latency and lower in amplitude than that elicited by target stimuli. ERP waveforms evoked by rare nontarget stimuli also showed obvious N240 and P300 components, which differed from those following frequent nontarget stimuli. These findings suggest that there are differences in signal processing in response to target, frequent nontarget and rare nontarget stimuli. The P300 component was distributed symmetrically and there was no significant hemispheric predominance with regard to any ERP component in response to either right or left side stimulation.  相似文献

ObjectiveStudies that explore neurophysiological correlates of psychiatric disorders have commonly used event-related potentials during a visual or an auditory oddball task with the main results being changes in the P300 component. In the present study, a bimodal oddball design with synchronized pairs of audio–visual stimuli was used to further improve the clinical sensitivity of the P300.MethodsTwo groups of healthy participants, one consisting of students displaying anxious–depressive tendencies and the other of control students, completed visual, auditory and two kinds of audio–visual oddball task (one using emotional stimuli and the other using geometrical figures and simple sounds), in which they had to detect deviant rare stimuli among more frequently presented standard stimuli as quickly as possible. Behavioral performance and P300 data were analyzed.ResultsThe subjects with anxious and depressive tendencies had lower P300 amplitudes than controls, but only in the bimodal tasks.ConclusionsAlthough the two groups differed in their levels of anxiety and depression, only the bimodal tasks were able to identify these differences.SignificancesThese results suggest that a bimodal oddball design should be used in future studies to increase the sensitivity of P300 differences for differentiating between healthy participants and those with clinical symptoms.  相似文献

Obesity is associated with an increase prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms and diseases, such as depression. Based on the facts that pro-inflammatory cytokines are able to modulate behavior, and that obesity is characterized by a chronic low-grade inflammatory state, inflammation has been hypothesized to contribute to the neuropsychiatric comorbidity in obese individuals. However, a causal link between inflammation and the development of neuropsychiatric symptoms is hard to establish in humans. Here, we used an inflammatory stimulus, i.e. the intravenous injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), in a double-blind placebo-controlled design, to determine the vulnerability of obese individuals to inflammation-induced behavioral changes. The hypothesis was that obese individuals would show heightened behavioral response compared to normal-weight subjects for the same inflammatory stimulus, reflecting an increased sensitivity to the behavioral effects of pro-inflammatory cytokines. LPS (dose 0.8 ng/kg body weight, adjusted for estimated blood volume in obese subjects) and placebo (saline) were intravenously injected in 14 obese healthy subjects and 23 normal-weight healthy subjects in a within-subject, randomized, crossover design. LPS administration induced, in both groups, an acute increase in blood concentrations of cytokines (interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and IL-10), as well as in body temperature, cortisol, norepinephrine, sickness symptoms, fatigue, negative mood, and state anxiety. There were little differences in the immune and behavioral responses to LPS between obese and normal-weight subjects, but the cortisol response to LPS was strongly attenuated in obese individuals. Higher percentage of body fat was related to a lower cortisol response to LPS. Taken together, the population of young and healthy obese individuals in this study did not exhibit an increased behavioral sensitivity to cytokines, but an attenuated cortisol response to the immune challenge. Future studies will need to determine whether additional physiological and psychological factors interact with the state of obesity to increase the risk for inflammation-induced neuropsychiatric symptoms.  相似文献
