Neurological complications of cancer are some of the most feared manifestations of malignant disease. Their frequency is increasing with improvements in the treatment of primary systemic disease. This article discusses the approach to patients with neurological complications of cancer and reviews some of the most common causes.  相似文献

Neglected tropical diseases are a group of tropical diseases endemic in poor countries even though medical treatment and cures are available. They are considered a global health problem due to the severity of the physiological changes they induce in their hosts. Malaria is a disease caused by Plasmodium sp. that in its cerebral form may lead to acute or long-term neurological deficits, even with effective antimalarial therapy, causing vascular obstruction, reduced cerebral blood flow and many other changes. However, Plasmodium falciparum infection can also develop into a cerebral malaria(CM) disease that can produce neurological damage. This review will discuss the mechanisms involved in the neuropathology caused by CM, focusing on alterations in cognitive, behavior and neurological functions in human and experimental models.  相似文献

Neurological manifestations of the hyperventilation syndrome.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
Seventy-eight patients with the hyperventilation syndrome are described, none of whom had been diagnosed prior to referral for neurological assessment. There is a constellation of symptoms associated with this condition, and attacks need to be reproduced by hyperventilation in order for the diagnosis to be established. Loss of consciousness and paraesthesiae were more frequent than in previously published series.  相似文献

Neurological complications of cervical spine manipulation   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7       下载免费PDF全文
To obtain preliminary data on neurological complications of spinal manipulation in the UK all members of the Association of British Neurologists were asked to report cases referred to them of neurological complications occurring within 24 hours of cervical spine manipulation over a 12-month period. The response rate was 74%. 24 respondents reported at least one case each, contributing to a total of about 35 cases. These included 7 cases of stroke in brainstem territory (4 with confirmation of vertebral artery dissection), 2 cases of stroke in carotid territory and 1 case of acute subdural haematoma. There were 3 cases of myelopathy and 3 of cervical radiculopathy. Concern about neurological complications following cervical spine manipulation appears to be justified. A large long-term prospective study is required to determine the scale of the hazard.  相似文献

Neurological or psychiatric symptoms are present in 60% of the cases with systemic lupus erythematosus. Direct lesions of nervous system are associated with the presence of antibodies, vasculitis, thrombosis and impairments mediated by cytokines. Damages caused by injuries of other organs or those due to therapy are known as indirect causes. In the complex pathogenesis the primary cause is neuronal dysfunction mediated by autoantibodies, vasculopathia and coagulopathia. Until now, more than 20 antibodies have been identified in association with damages of the nervous system. These antibodies may impair neurons or astrocytes and may promote thrombotic processes in vessels of the brain. Activation of endothelial cells and disturbance of blood-brain barrier are also pathogenic factors. In patients with systemic lupus erythematosus the most frequent psychiatric manifestations are organic psychosyndrome, particularly deterioration of cognitive functions, and depression, while the most common neurological syndromes are epilepsy and ischemic stroke. In the pathogenesis of antiphospholipid syndrome β2-glycoprotein I plays the most important role; binding to its antibody the complex may interact with cells and modify haemostatic actions. The most frequent neurological manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome are headache and ischemic stroke.  相似文献

It's well known that hepatitis C virus (HCV) related chronic liver disease may be associated with various extra hepatic disorders. These manifestations can revealed the hepatic disease. We review the available data on the conditions and asses their clinical implications: vascular, cutaneous, articular, neurological or renal disorders. There is no correlation between these extra hepatic manifestations and the severity of liver disease. Several recent studies have established a strong link between HCV infection and essential mixed cryoglobulinemia but some other extra hepatic associations are just fortuitous. Others datas are necessary to better analyze these extra hepatic disorders and to offer the beneficial treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C.  相似文献

Twenty-five patients who underwent nephrectomy for chronic pyonephrosis were studied retrospectively. Such patients may present with a wide range of symptoms. Marked haematological and biochemical abnormalities are found, the most striking being a gross elevation of plasma viscosity (or ESR) and a raised alkaline phosphatase. The resulting picture often suggests extrarenal disease, and diagnostic confusion occurred in a number of patients.  相似文献
