Effects of word form on brain processing of written Chinese 总被引:16,自引:0,他引:16
Both logographic characters and alphabetic pinyins can be used to write words in Chinese. Here we use fMRI to address the question of whether the written form affects brain processing of a word. Fifteen healthy, right-handed, native Chinese-reading volunteers participated in our study and were asked to read silently either Chinese characters (8 subjects) or pinyins (7 subjects). The stimulus presentation rate was varied for both tasks to allow us to identify brain regions with word-load-dependent activation. Rate effects (fast minus slow presentations) for Chinese character reading were observed in striate and extrastriate visual cortex, superior parietal lobule, left posterior middle temporal gyrus, bilateral inferior temporal gyri, and bilateral superior frontal gyri. Rate effects for pinyin reading were observed in bilateral fusiform, lingual, and middle occipital gyri, bilateral superior parietal lobule/precuneus, left inferior parietal lobule, bilateral inferior temporal gyrus, left middle temporal gyrus, and left superior temporal gyrus. These results demonstrate that common regions of the brain are involved in reading both Chinese characters and pinyins, activated apparently independently of the surface form of the word. There also appear to be brain regions in which activation is dependent on word form. However, it is unlikely that these are entirely specific for a given word form; their activation more likely reflects relative functional specializations within broader networks for processing written language. 相似文献

Word prediction is often recommended by therapists as a means to improve typing speed for clients with physical limitations. Although literature suggests that word prediction does have an effect on writing proficiency, increased speed is not one of its benefits when used with a standard keyboard. One reason given for the failure of word prediction to accelerate typing is that the user must look away from any source document to scan the prediction list during typing. Looking away from the source document may slow the typist more than any acceleration offered by word prediction. For input methods that already require the typist to look away from the copy, this effect might be irrelevant. The focus of this research was to determine whether word completion or word prediction programs would increase typing speed when used with an input method (an on-screen keyboard) that also requires looking away from the source document. Ten people, five men and five women, aged 20 to 38 years, participated in this study. The study used a single-subject, successive intervention design to test typing speed and accuracy using an on-screen keyboard with integrated word prediction software. Seven participants had their fastest typing speed with word prediction. Two participants had their fastest typing speed with word completion. Only one participant demonstrated no improvement in speed when using these two programs. Overall, these results show that the use of word prediction and word completion may assist on-screen keyboard users to improve typing speed. 相似文献

This study examines how the cognitive and perceptual loads introduced by a word prediction feature impact learning and performance. Two groups of able-bodied subjects transcribed text using two row-column scanning systems for 10 consecutive trials each. The two systems differed only in that one system had a word prediction feature. Subject groups differed in their order of system use. The results show that, under the conditions of this study, the word prediction system was not substantially more difficult to learn, but it did not yield a statistically significant improvement in text generation rate. This suggests that the cost of using this word prediction system balanced the benefit of the keystroke savings achieved by these subjects. The relationship between keystroke savings, cost in item selection rate, and improvement in text generation rate is explored in order to provide insight into this outcome. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of the diagnosis of macrosomia in relation to differing weight estimation formulae in unselected pregnancies. METHODS: Computer modeling techniques were employed. Computer modeling software generated correlated fetal biometry measurements according to published British standards, from 37 to 41 weeks' gestation. For each set of measurements, estimated fetal weights were obtained by a panel of 18 ultrasound weight formulae. The diagnosis of macrosomia was made if the fetal weight estimate was greater than 4500 g. Cohorts of 5000 pregnancies for each week of gestation were studied. RESULTS: The frequency of diagnosis of macrosomia increased progressively with advancing gestational age, with large increases between 40 and 41 weeks. The type of weight estimation formula had a profound influence on the frequency of diagnosis of macrosomia. Five of the formulae tested almost never returned a weight estimate greater than 4500 g. Three formulae yielded false positive rates in excess of 15%. The Hadlock group of formulae yielded frequencies of 0.3% to 14.6%. CONCLUSIONS: Most formulae tend to over-diagnose macrosomia at term. Intervention rates for suspected fetal macrosomia may be influenced by gestational age at the time of scan and the type of fetal weight estimation formula in use. 相似文献

The present study investigates the relationship of linguistic (phonetic) and extralinguistic (voice) information in preattentive auditory processing. We provide neurophysiological data, which show for the first time that both kinds of information are processed in parallel at an early preattentive stage. In order to establish the temporal and spatial organization of the underlying neuronal processes, we studied the conjunction of voice and word deviations in a mismatch negativity experiment, whereby the listener's brain responses were collected using magnetoencephalography. The stimuli consisted of single spoken words, whereby the deviants manifested a change of the word, of the voice, or both word and voice simultaneously (combined). First, we identified the N100m (overlain by mismatch field, MMF) and localized its generators, analyzing N100 m/MMF latency, dipole localization, and dipole strength. While the responses evoked by deviant stimuli were more anterior than the standard, localization differences between the deviants could not be shown. The dipole strength was larger for deviants than the standard stimulus, but again, no differences between the deviants could be established. There was no difference in the hemispheric lateralization of the responses. However, a difference between the deviants was observed in the latencies. The N100 m/MMF revealed a significantly shorter and less variant latency for the combined stimulus compared to all other experimental conditions. The data suggest an integral parallel processing model, which describes the early extraction of phonetic and voice information from the speech signal as parallel and contingent processes. 相似文献

Founded on the initiative of parents of spastic children, the Saarbrücken Reha GmbH, a limited liability company for the sheltered employment of disabled persons, has for several years been employing disabled people in the field of text and data processing. As part of an 84-week experiential psychiatric nurse training course, a group (n = 19) of post registration student nurses (PRSNS) were involved in the process of writing four essays on aspects of psychiatric nursing during their first 16 weeks of school based study days. The marking criteria for each essay was determined in the classroom by the PRSNS together with their tutor, and the essays were subsequently written in the student's own time. Assessment and grading of each essay was carried out by the student, a peer, and a tutor, using the agreed marking criteria. Analysis of the independently awarded grades for all of the essays reveals that students consistently award themselves lower grades than either their peers or their tutors, with tutors awarding the highest grades in 3 of the 4 essays. Further analysis reveals that peers and tutors, and peers and students grades correlated significantly in 2 out of the 4 essays. 相似文献

Using a whole-cortex magnetoencephalograph, magnetic field changes were recorded to describe brain activities related to simultaneous visual and olfactory processing and to detect odor-related influences on verbal information processing. Words had to be either shallowly (nonsemantic) or deeply (semantic) encoded by healthy young subjects, each of these tasks under two different kinds of olfactory stimulation. After each encoding phase, word recognition performance was tested. First, the odor was randomly associated with some of the study words (simultaneous stimulation; same duration as for words) for both depths of word processing conditions, and second, continuous olfactory stimulation (permanent stimulation) was provided during the whole study phases of both depths of word processing conditions. The statistical analysis of the physiological data revealed evidence of a specific odor-induced effect depending on depth of word processing and kind of olfactory stimulation. Brain activity between about 250 and 450 ms as well as between about 650 and 1000 ms after stimulus onset was found to vary as a function of odor delivery and depth of word processing. In addition, a significant effect of odor stimulation on subsequent word recognition performance occurred in case of simultaneous odor stimulation and semantic word encoding. It is interpreted that in this case, word recognition performance significantly decreased because of the presence of the odor during prior word encoding. Such a behavioral effect was missing in all other conditions. The present psychological and physiological findings support the idea that semantic word encoding is specifically affected by simultaneous olfactory information processing. It is concluded that this phenomenon is due to a competition with cortical regions related to language and olfactory information processing, as suggested by T. S. Lorig (1999, Neurosci. Biobehav. Verbal fluency is a classical and widely used neuropsychological instrument to assess cognitive abilities. Results of previous studies indicate an influence on verbal fluency performance of both, age and word knowledge. So far, no imaging study has investigated the neural mechanisms underlying an age and word knowledge related decline on the quantitative verbal output in a highly demanding overt and continuous semantic fluency task. Fifty healthy volunteers (age 22-56 years, verbal IQ 95-143) overtly and continuously articulated words in response to ten visually presented semantic categories while BOLD signal was measured with fMRI. Verbal responses were recorded with an MRI compatible microphone and transcribed after the scanning session. The number of produced words as well as age, word knowledge and level of education was implemented in the design matrix enabling a separate analysis of these factors on both, neural responses and behavioral differences. There was a significant correlation of level of education and number of generated words, but no significant correlations of generated words and age or word knowledge were observed. On the neural level, a widespread network was found for the word production task as contrasted with the resting condition, encompassing the bilateral superior temporal gyri, the cerebellum and the SMA. An age related positive correlation was found in the bilateral inferior and middle frontal gyri, the anterior cingulate gyrus, the left precentral gyrus and the right insula. A lower word knowledge resulted in enhanced BOLD responses in the right superior temporal gyrus and the left superior frontal gyrus. Results are interpreted in terms of compensation mechanisms countervailing potential age and word knowledge related effects. 相似文献

Background The analysis of nursing errors in clinical management highlighted that clinical handover plays a pivotal role in patient safety. Changes to handover including conducting handover at the bedside and the use of written handover summary sheets were subsequently implemented. Aim The aim of the study was to explore nurses’ perspectives on the introduction of bedside handover and the use of written handover sheets. Method Using a qualitative approach, data were obtained from six focus groups containing 30 registered and enrolled (licensed practical) nurses. Thematic analysis revealed several major themes. Findings Themes identified included: bedside handover and the strengths and weaknesses; patient involvement in handover, and good communication is about good communicators. Finally, three sources of patient information and other issues were also identified as key aspects. Conclusions How bedside handover is delivered should be considered in relation to specific patient caseloads (patients with cognitive impairments), the shift (day, evening or night shift) and the model of service delivery (team versus patient allocation). Implications for nursing management Flexible handover methods are implicit within clinical setting issues especially in consideration to nursing teamwork. Good communication processes continue to be fundamental for successful handover processes. 相似文献

At the University of Iowa, nursing students are introduced to computer technology as one unit in a course designed to explore nursing as a profession. A single group, pretest/posttest design was used to evaluate changes in attitudes associated with the course work. Relationships of attitudes scores and eight background variables were studied. Posttest attitudes scores were significantly higher than pretest scores. The attitudes scores were positively related to skills scores at a statistically significant level of .05, with no significant relationship between attitudes scores and knowledge base scores.
