The Community Clergyman and His Relationship to the Mental Health Team

Mental health professionals are placing increased importance upon the community as the locus of treatment, and upon the use of community professionals as therapeutic resources. The clergyman in the parish is a primary resource, but he has not yet been integrated into the therapeutic team. Except in rare instances, communication and consultation between clergy and family physicians... do not exist. Reasons for this are postulated, and suggestions for a better deployment of the minister are offered.     

Mental Health Needs of Children in School Role of the Child Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse

This article addresses the mental health needs of children in the school system. Children are often exposed to situations in their lives that affect their ability to master developmental and academic tasks resulting in school difficulties. The school system has the opportunity to provide primary prevention and early intervention that will promote the mental health of children. The role of the child psychiatric mental health nurse in the school is described as one model for promoting the mental health of children.     

Children with Behavioral/Mental Health Disorders and School Mental Health Nurses in Australia

TOPIC: This review of the literature addresses Australian school mental health nursing is an emergent field of practice. PURPOSE: Children with behavioral/mental health disorders present challenges to schools, teachers, and their families. They can be disruptive in class, inappropriate with their peers, and perform poorly academically. Often this group of children do not respond to the school's usual strategies to support appropriate behavior. When children with behavioral/mental health disorders do not receive specialized support based on their problems and needs, their problems can escalate over time and in adolescence their behavior may become more challenging, with increased aggression, substance use, contact with the criminal justice system, and school failure with or without dropout. CONCLUSION: Mental health nurses, working as case managers, could be effective in the support of children with behavioral/mental health disorders in schools. Mental health nurses, because of their professional education and clinical practice, work not only with the individual child but also with family members. They are well prepared to case manage in schools and support individual teachers and health and welfare services in their management of their clients with behavioral/mental health disorders.

Juvenile Mental Health Courts for Adjudicated Youth: Role Implications for Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses

TOPIC: Juvenile mental health courts for adjudicated youth. PURPOSE: To describe the role of psychiatric nurses in reducing mental health disparities for adjudicated youth via juvenile mental health courts.
