The aims of this study were (a) to examine the association of skin tags and colonic polyps and (b) to identify factors influencing skin tags. Therefore, a consecutive series of 157 medical ward patients with gastrointestinal symptoms who underwent colonoscopy underwent dermatological examination. Skin tags were found in 52% of these patients regardless of sex. (a) There was a statistically significant association between skin tags and colonic polyps (P = 0.33). This association, however, was based solely on an age effect. (b) Influencing factors were weight and age for the number of skin tags and the interaction between sex and the concentration of triglycerides for their size. At any given triglyceride concentration, men had larger skin tags.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Skin tags are common benign skin tumors usually occurring on the neck and major flexors of older people. A possible association with impaired carbohydrate metabolism has been suggested in previous studies, but the results are not conclusive. OBJECTIVE: To investigate and compare the prevalence of diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) in patients with skin tag and a control group. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in individuals over 15 years old, comparing cases (n = 104) with at least three skin tags and age-, sex-, and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls (n = 94) without skin tag. Cases and controls were recruited from patients consecutively seen at an academic outpatient dermatology clinic. All patients underwent a standard 2-h oral glucose tolerance test with 75 g glucose. RESULTS: Patients with skin tag had higher frequency of diabetes than the control group (23.07% vs. 8.51%, chi(2)-test, P = 0.005). The difference in the frequency of IGT was not significant (13.46% vs. 10.63%, chi(2)-test, P = 0.543). There was a positive correlation between the total number of skin tags and the mean fasting plasma glucose (Pearson correlation, r = 0.260, P = 0.031); patients with more than 30 skin tags were particularly at an increased risk of diabetes (52.0%). No correlation was found between the number of skin tags and BMI. We did not find any correlation between the anatomical localization of skin tags and impaired carbohydrate metabolism, except for skin tags under the breast in women. CONCLUSION: These results show an increased risk of diabetes mellitus in patients with multiple skin tags. With regard to the importance of early diagnosis of diabetes, we recommend a high level of suspicion for impaired carbohydrate metabolism in patients with skin tag.  相似文献

Abstract: Obese adult patients have many dermatoses, such as skin tags, candida infection, cellulite, and intertrigo, but only limited data have been published on obese children and the barrier function of their skin. Sixty‐five overweight and obese children (n = 40, BMI 85th–95th percentile; n = 25, BMI > 95th percentile) (aged 8–15; mean age 11.6) and 30 normal‐weight controls (aged 7–15; mean age 11.1) underwent a clinical evaluation and calculation of transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Higher weight percentile was associated with a higher incidence of some dermatoses. Skin tags were found in 40% of subjects in the 95th percentile and 2.5% of those in the 85th percentile. Striae distensae were observed in 32% of patients in the 95th percentile and 22.5% of those in the 85th percentile. Plantar hyperkeratosis was observed only in 20% of the 95th percentile subjects and was not observed in the other groups. TEWL values at the forearm site were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in obese children than in the control group, but no significant differences in TEWL values according to BMI level were found between the two groups of obese children. Degree of obesity influences the incidence of some associated dermatoses; skin tags, striae distensae, and plantar hyperkeratosis were more frequent in children in the 95th percentile of BMI. Obesity increases the TEWL rate, suggesting that obese children might become more easily overheated as weight increases, with more profuse sweating because of the thick layers of subcutaneous fat.  相似文献

Background Skin tags are common cutaneous lesions with an indefinite aetiology. Objectives To assess serum leptin, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in different body mass index (BMI) patients with skin tags. Methods Three equally distributed groups of patients with multiple skin tags: 30 normal BMI, 30 overweight and 30 obese were included. Controls were age‐, gender‐ and BMI‐matched healthy subjects. Serum leptin, insulin resistance based on homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR) and metabolic syndrome were assessed in all groups. Results Number and extent of skin tags increase with the increase in BMI. Highest leptin levels were found in obese patients, with significant differences when compared to normal BMI and overweight patients. Similar findings existed in controls. Significantly higher leptin levels were found in obese patients compared to obese controls. HOMA‐IR was significantly higher in all groups of patients compared to BMI‐counterpart controls. Seventy‐one per cent of patients fulfilled criteria of metabolic syndrome. Number of skin tags, leptin and HOMA‐IR were significantly higher in patients with metabolic syndrome compared to patients without the syndrome. Positive correlations were found between serum leptin and HOMA‐IR in obese patients and obese controls. Positive correlations were also found between number of skin tags and waist circumference in all groups of patients. Conclusions Serum leptin displays an association with obesity and insulin resistance. Assessment of HOMA‐IR in patients with skin tags may serve as a useful approach for diagnosis of insulin resistance. Waist circumference is the only criteria of metabolic syndrome that correlates with number of skin tags.  相似文献

IntroductionThe prevalence of obesity has increased worldwide in recent years. Some authors have described skin conditions associated with obesity, but there is little evidence on the association between insulin levels and such disorders.ObjectiveTo describe the skin disorders present in overweight and obese patients and analyze their association with insulin levels.Material and methodsThe study included nondiabetic male and female patients over 6 years of age who were seen at our hospital between January and April 2011. All the patients were evaluated by a dermatologist, who performed a physical examination, including anthropometry, and reviewed their medical history and medication record; fasting blood glucose and insulin were also measured. The patients were grouped according to degree of overweight or obesity and the data were compared using analysis of variance or the χ2 test depending on the type of variable. The independence of the associations was assessed using regression analysis.ResultsIn total, 109 patients (95 adults and 13 children, 83.5% female) were studied. The mean (SD) age was 38 (14) years and the mean body mass index was 39.6 ± 8 kg/m2. The skin conditions observed were acanthosis nigricans (AN) (in 97% of patients), skin tags (77%), keratosis pilaris (42%), and plantar hyperkeratosis (38%). Statistically significant associations were found between degree of obesity and AN (P = .003), skin tags (P = .001), and plantar hyperkeratosis. Number of skin tags, AN neck severity score, and AN distribution were significantly and independently associated with insulin levels.ConclusionsAN and skin tags should be considered clinical markers of hyperinsulinemia in nondiabetic, obese patients.  相似文献

Multiple skin tags appear associated with abnormalities in glucose/insulin metabolism. Clinical and metabolic glucose/insulin characteristics of men with multiple (8 or more) skin tags on the neck were compared with a control group with few or none. Both groups were divided in two subgroups according to normal or abnormal laboratory findings. In the study subgroup with normal laboratory findings the number of skin tags varied from 8–33, whereas in those with abnormal laboratory findings the range was 9–65. Eight or more skin tags were related with statistically significant laboratory glucose/insulin abnormalities: basal hyperinsulinemia (p<0.002), postprandial hyperinsulinemia (p<0.003), and postprandial hyperglycemia (p<0.01). In the multiple skin tag group 77 % had diverse laboratory abnormalities, including insulin resistance, basal hyperinsulinemia, postprandial hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance or type 2 diabetes, in contrast with the control group, where only 33 % showed laboratory abnormalities. One‐third of the study group had acanthosis nigricans. Only 15 % of patients with metabolic abnormalities did not show any cutaneous expression of glucose/insulin alterations (9 or more skin tags on the neck, acanthosis nigricans, or waist circumference greater than 95 cm). Multiple skin tags were more sensitive than acanthosis nigricans in identifying those with alterations in the glucose/insulin metabolism (77 vs. 32 % respectively), although less specific (68 vs.100%). Multiple skin tags should raise suspicion of insulin resistance or hyperinsulinemia.  相似文献

Skin tags are common benign neoplasm located predominantly in intertriginous skin. Generally of cosmetic concern, they can be easily treated with cryotherapy, electrodessication or snip-excision. Despite their high incidence data about their etiopathogenesis are scarce in the medical literature. We describe a patient who developed multiple skin tags arranged in a linear fashion suggesting an etiopathogenic role for friction.  相似文献

Fifty-four male and female patients with suspected colonic disease were examined for the presence of acrochordons prior to colonoscopy. Thirty-five of these patients (65%) had skin tags and twenty-six (48%) were found to have colonic polyps. In this study patients with acrochordons were significantly (p less than 0.005) more likely to have adenomatous polyps; thus, skin tags may be good markers for the presence of polyps in patients with suspected colonic disease. However, any association between colonic polyps and acrochordons in the general population requires further examination.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Population-based figures on skin cancer are essential for a realistic assessment of the personal disease burden, prevention modes and the need for caring. The Robert Koch Institute in Germany estimates the incidence of melanoma skin cancer as seven cases in 100 000 persons (age-standardized by the European standard rate). Population-based studies presumably show higher incidence rates of 10-16 cases in 100 000 persons. Few data exist for non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) as this is not systematically registered in Germany. OBJECTIVES: To present the first population-based results from the Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) Cancer Registry on incidence, stage distribution, clinical types and localization of skin cancer and to compare the results with other studies. METHODS: The Cancer Registry of the Bundesland Schleswig-Holstein with 3500 registering institutions, 100 of which are dermatological institutions, investigates all notifiable incident cancer cases according to international standards. From the recorded data all melanoma and NMSC cases were identified and evaluated. RESULTS: Between 1998 and 2001, 1784 malignant melanoma (MM) and 12 956 NMSC cases underwent diagnostic and analytical evaluation. For MM, age-standardized incidence rates were 12.3 and 14.8 in 100 000 men and women, respectively, and the mean age of men was greater than that of women (56.6 vs. 54.9 years, P < 0.05). Superficial spreading melanoma was the most frequent clinical type (39.1%). The tumours were predominantly located on the trunk in men (46.8%) in contrast to leg and hip in women (39.5%). For NMSC, the age-standardized incidence rates were 100.2 and 72.6 in 100 000 men and women, respectively. More than 80% of all tumours were basal cell carcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: The first population-based data from Schleswig-Holstein on the characteristics (age, sex, histological subtypes, localization and stage) of skin tumours agree well with the existing literature and may thus be regarded as representative. However, markedly higher incidences for MM and NMSC in the north of Germany compared with other parts of the country were observed. As the incidence rates from the north of Germany fit well into the European geographical pattern, we assume no regional increase. Therefore, the official German estimates on cutaneous tumours may largely depend on regional factors and may not be regarded as representative for all regions in Germany.  相似文献

Skin tags are one of the most common, benign, disfiguring tumors on the flexural aspects of the body of advanced aged and obese people, with higher incidences in females. Various treatment modalities have been advocated for the tags. Even a simple, noninvasive and fast cryotechnique requires approximately 1-3 min for a single skin tag. To hasten the treatment of the tags, tissue forceps have been used as an effective, fast, simple instrument. By utilizing the tissue forceps, 37 skin tags at different parts of body have been treated successfully without cosmetic defects or recurrences at the sites.  相似文献

An association between skin tags and insulin resistance, obesity, impaired carbohydrate and lipid metabolism has been suggested. However, there still is a need for comprehensive and controlled clinical studies. We aimed to evaluate the atherogenic risk factors in patients with skin tags. Thirty-six patients with skin tags who were admitted to the dermatology department and 22 healthy controls were included in this study. Possible subjects who were taking systemic drugs or who had a systemic disease that may be associated with lipid or carbohydrate metabolism abnormalities were excluded from the study. All the measurements were completed in 26 patients. Standard oral glucose tolerance tests were performed on the patient and control groups. Serum insulin, total cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol levels were measured. LDL-cholesterol and VLDL-cholesterol ratios and HOMA-IR and body mass indices were calculated. The mean levels of body mass index, HOMA-IR, and total cholesterol were significantly higher in patients than in controls. In conclusion, skin tags may not be innocent tumoral proliferations; instead, follow-up of such patients with regard to the development of diseases associated with atherosclerosis may be beneficial.  相似文献

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is an autosomal-dominant genodermatosis characterized by skin fibrofolliculomas and an increased risk of spontaneous pneumothorax, renal and possibly other tumors. A causative gene (FLCN) on chromosome 17p has recently been identified. We here report clinical and genetic studies of 20 BHD families ascertained by the presence of multiple fibrofolliculomas or trichodiscomas in the proband. Pathogenic FLCN germline mutations were found in 11 (69%) of 16 probands tested and in 14 family members. Six different FLCN germline mutations were detected, four of which have not been reported previously. The clinical features were variable. None and less than 10 skin lesions were observed in two mutation carriers at the age of 67 and 29 years, respectively. Spontaneous pneumothorax was reported in four and renal carcinoma of mixed histological types in two of 36 BHD-affected individuals and/or FLCN mutation carriers. Both the prevalence of spontaneous pneumothorax and renal tumors appeared to be relatively low compared with previously reported data. Various other extracutaneous tumors were observed in 11 of 36 BHD-affected individuals and/or FLCN mutation carriers. This study of the second largest cohort to date contributes to the expanding data on the variable phenotype and underlying gene defects in BHD.  相似文献

Two hundred and sixteen non hospitalized patients with skin tags (ST) were studied for the presence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity. Overt DM was found in 57 (26.3%) patients and impaired glucose tolerance test was found in 17 (7.9%) patients. Sixteen new cases of DM were found among this group. All the diabetic patients in the study population had non-insulin dependent DM. Sixty-two (28.7%) of the patients were obese. No correlation was found between the localization, size, colour and number of the ST and the presence of DM. Our study indicates that ST are not associated with increased incidence of obesity compared to the general population. On the other hand, ST are associated with impaired carbohydrate metabolism, and may serve as means for identifying patients at increasing risk of having DM.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The data pertaining to skin cancers registered in three departments of pathology in Indonesia revealed that squamous cell carcinoma showed the highest frequency, followed by basal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. A total of 320 patients of more than 60 years of age were studied for dermatological changes with aging. The male female ratio of patients was 3:1. Majority of cases (60.6%) were between 60-65 years of age. Pruritus was present in 37.5% cases, wrinkles in 82.1%, senile lentigenes in 57.8%, seborrhoeic keratosis in 48.8%, cherry angioma in 48.1%, idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis in 43%, skin tags in 37%, xerosis in 28%, comedones in 19%, infection and infestation in 40%, eczematous disorders in 36.9%, papulosquamous disorders in 10%, metabolic disorders in 16%, pigmentary disorders in 8.7%, keratinisation disorders in 4.1%, vesiculobullous disorders in 2.8% and associated systemic disorders in 49.7% cases.  相似文献

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with benign cutaneous or mucosal lesions and with malignant tumours, but none of the HPV types has so far been related to skin tags. Skin biopsy specimens from 49 Caucasian patients suffering from the presence of multiple soft fibromas were analysed by means of dot blot hybridization and by polymerase chain reaction assays aimed at detecting all known HPV types. The results revealed the presence of HPV DNA type 6/11 in 88% of the skin tags examined. This result supports the hypothesis that HPV plays a part in the progression of cutaneous soft fibromas, as previously reported for laryngeal papillomas.  相似文献

The wool follicles of New Zealand Wiltshire sheep can be induced to undergo growth cycles by manipulating circulating prolactin levels. Altered patterns of gene expression through this cycle were examined using differential display, and nine sequence tags for differentially expressed genes were isolated. Four of these tags were identified as fragments of known genes, encoding a wool keratin, KRTAP3.2, a desmosome component, desmoglein 1, an epithelial cell marker, stratifin, and a protein kinase, Clk3. All four genes were shown to be downregulated in telogen skin compared with anagen. In situ hybridization showed that all had localization patterns which included cells that are absent in telogen. The stratifin tag was used to clone a cDNA that incorporated a complete open-reading frame for ovine stratifin. Ovine stratifin is similar to the human form, showing only six single residue differences in the predicted amino acid sequence. Stratifin probably acts as a regulator of other proteins involved in trichocyte cell cycling and differentiation. Clk3 is involved in regulating RNA splicing. KRTAP3.2 and Dsg1 both play structural roles in hair follicles. The other five tags, including two representing genes that were upregulated during catagen, could not be identified by homology. Differential display is an effective means of identifying genes involved in follicle function and, potentially, of genes controlling the growth cycle.  相似文献
