Compaction of cold asphalt mixtures is a subject that has not been thoroughly studied, and, for this reason, requires new efforts from researchers to have a better understanding. Unlike hot mixtures, cold mixtures and mainly recycled mixtures require specific considerations for compaction. There is a lack of consensus about the methodology to select the optimum premix water and emulsion contents. In the absence of specific regulations, the use of soil tests or hot mixtures procedures is common. For these reasons, this investigation’s main goal was to evaluate two compaction methods used to design cold recycled mixtures with emulsion: the modified Proctor procedure and the gyratory compaction. It was concluded that both methods could be useful to study compactability since consistent results were obtained by applying the maximum bulk density criterion. However, the higher bulk densities achieved, the smaller specimens used, and the suitability of the gyratory specimens to be later tested for mechanical properties make them preferable to the modified Proctor samples. A new approach has been proposed using iso-density lines on dual-axis premix water content-emulsion content graphs that facilitates the study of the influence on compactability of these two factors combined. These contributions can alleviate the laboratory works during the design of cold recycled asphalt mixtures and contribute to a more in-depth knowledge of the combined effect of premix water and emulsion contents on the compactability of cold recycled mixtures with emulsion.  相似文献

To evaluate the long-term performances of different polymer-modified asphalt mixtures, three modifiers were chosen to modify AC-13 (defined as the asphalt concrete with the aggregate nominal maximum particle size of 13.2 mm); namely, high viscosity modifier (HVM), high modulus modifier (HMM), and anti-rutting agent (ARA). The deformation and cracking resistance of different polymer-modified mixtures were checked at different aging conditions (unaged, short-term aged, and long-term aged for 5, 10, and 15 days respectively). The results of the Hamburg wheel-track test and uniaxial penetration test (UPT) showed that the rutting resistance of all asphalt mixtures changed in a V-shape as the aging progressed. From the unaged stage to the long-term aging stage (5 days), the rutting resistance decreases gradually. While after the long-term aging stage (5 days), the rutting resistance increases gradually. Results from the semicircular bending test (SCB) and the indirect tensile asphalt cracking test (IDEAL-CT) indicated that the cracking resistance of all the mixtures gradually decline with the deepening of the aging degree, indicating that aging weakens the crack resistance of asphalt mixtures. Additionally, test results showed that the rutting resistance of ARA AC-13 (defined as AC-13 containing ARA) is the best, the cracking resistances of ARA AC-13, HMM AC-13 (defined as AC-13 containing HMM) and HVM AC-13 (defined as AC-13 containing HVM) have no significant difference, and different polymer modifiers had different sensitivities to aging due to the polymer content and the type of modifier. The conclusions of this study help to further understand the long-term performance of polymer-modified asphalt mixtures during service life and to help guide the selection of modifiers for mixtures.  相似文献

Accurate characterisation and appropriate binder selection are essential to increase the load-induced cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures at an intermediate temperature. Hence, the primary goal of this study was to correlate the cracking resistance exerted by the binder with the cracking performance of asphalt mixtures. The laboratory-based experimental plan covered various types of laboratory tests specified by various agencies and road authorities to study the correlation of a neat bitumen and five polymer-modified binders with their corresponding asphalt mixtures. The fatigue life of the binders was assessed through a Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS) test and statistically correlated with various load-induced cracking parameters from the indirect tensile test, semi-circular bending (SCB) test, and four points bending beam test (FPBB) of asphalt mixtures at 25 °C. Binders and mixes were further grouped depending on their polymeric family (i.e., modified with a particular type of polymer) to validate their statistical correlation. The indicator that mostly correlated the binder properties with the asphalt mixture properties is the secant modulus from the SCB test. Fatigue parameters obtained through LAS better explain the asphalt fatigue performance obtained through FPBB; specifically, asphalt tests at high strain levels (e.g., 400 micro strain) better correlate to the LAS fatigue parameter (Nf).  相似文献

Circular utilization of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) has received extensive attention for its economic and environmental benefits. The application of recycled asphalt mixtures (RAM) in the upper layer of asphalt pavement faces the issue of inferior anti-slip performance and durability. This study aims to recycle steel slag as virgin aggregates in RAM and quantitatively evaluate the service performance of RAM with steel slag. Steel slag and basalt RAM were firstly fabricated and the five different RAP contents were involved. Then tests of Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength and Cantabro spatter loss were conducted to investigate the moisture susceptibility of RAM. Moreover, their high temperature stability, crack resistance and skid resistance were characterized. Indirect tensile fatigue test combined with Hamburg wheel tracking test were carried out to discuss the durability of RAM. The comprehensive performance of RAM with steel slag were quantitatively assessed based on an improved radar chart evaluation method. The results show that involving steel slag reveals a remarkable enhancement function on water stability, high and low temperature performance, skid resistance and fatigue resistance of RAM. Steel slag RAM with 50% RAP content demonstrates a rutting depth of 7.60 mm and a creep slope of 2.54 × 10−4, indicating its superior durability in high temperature and water environment. Compared with the comprehensive evaluation function of 0.5336 for basalt RAM with 30% RAP dosage, steel slag RAM reaches 0.7801, which represents its preferable road performance.  相似文献

Asphalt pavements inevitably deteriorate over time, requiring frequent maintenance work to ensure the proper serviceability of the road network. Small interventions, such as resurfacing for pavement preservation, are preferable to reconstruction at the end of roads’ in-service lives as they limit environmental- and economic-related impacts. Thin asphalt overlay (TAO) mixture represents a suitable maintenance solution to restore the functional properties of road surfaces. Due to the increasing awareness of the depletion of non-renewable resources and the importance of promoting the circular economy, this study evaluated the possibility of using fully recycled TAO mixes by investigating their volumetric and mechanical properties. Two eco-friendly TAO mixes were designed using recycled aggregates from reclaimed asphalt pavements, a municipal solid waste incinerator, and steel slags in order to meet EN 13108-2 requirements. The TAO mixes differed in regard to the type of bituminous binder (neat/SBS-modified bitumens) and fibres (natural/synthetic) employed. The preliminary results demonstrated that the presence of recycled aggregates did not negatively affect the workability and the mechanical performances of the two sustainable mixtures in terms of stiffness, tensile resistance, rutting and moisture susceptibility. Of these, the TAO mix with neat bitumen and synthetic fibres showed enhanced mechanical performance highlighting the structural effects of the used fibres.  相似文献

The research was aimed at assessing the effect of the redispersible polymer powder on the fracture resistance of a subbase made of a mineral–cement mixture with a bitumen emulsion. The test was performed at two temperatures, i.e., 0 °C and 20 °C. The prepared mixtures differed in the content of cement, asphalt emulsion, and polymer modifier. Cement and redispersible polymer powder were dosed in 1.5% steps from 0.5% to 3.5% while the amount of bitumen emulsion ranged from 0.0% to 5.0%. The SCB (semi-circular bending) tests carried out in the laboratory showed the dependence of the influence of the amount of binder and polymer modifier on the fracture resistance of the recycled subbase. Mixes containing a polymer modifier in their composition are characterized by a much higher resistance to cracking than traditional mineral–cement–emulsion mixtures. An example is the doubling of the framework’s fracture toughness (KIC) when the amount of the polymer modifier is increased from 0.5% to 2.0% with a constant cement content of 0.5%. The obtained results (KIC) in this case were 2.90 and 5.81. The key is the right ratio of polymer powder and cement in the base composition.  相似文献

Porous asphalt (PA) mixtures are designed with a high air void (AV) (i.e., 18~22%) content allowing rainwater to infiltrate into their internal structures. Therefore, PA mixtures are more sensitive to moisture damage than traditional densely graded asphalt mixtures. However, the moisture damage evolution of PA mixtures is still unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the moisture damage evolution and durability damage evolution of PA mixtures. The indirect tensile test (ITT), ITT fatigue test, and Cantabro loss test were used to evaluate the moisture sensitivity and durability of PA mixtures, and a staged ITT fatigue test was developed to investigate the damage evolutions under dry and wet conditions. Indirect tensile strength (ITS), fatigue life, indirect tensile resilience modulus (E), and durability decreased with the increment of moisture damage and loading cycles. The fatigue life is more sensitive to the moisture damage. The largest decrements in ITS and E were found in the first 3000 loading cycles, and PA mixtures tended to fail when the decrement exceeded 60%. Damage factors based on the ITS and E are proposed to predict the loading history of PA mixtures. The durability damage evolution and damage factors could fit an exponential model under dry conditions. Moisture had a significant influence and an acceleration function on the moisture damage evolution and durability damage evolution of PA mixtures.  相似文献

The paper presents the influence of laboratory aging simulation on fracture properties determined on 150 variants of asphalt mixtures. The fracture properties were determined by two different test approaches—semi-circular bending test (SCB test) and three-point bending test on beam specimens (3-PB test). The aging was simulated according to one of the methods defined in EN 12697-52 (storage of test specimens in chamber at temperature of 85 °C for 5 days). The evaluated group of variants covered asphalt mixtures for all road layers. The group was further divided according to used bituminous binder (unmodified vs. modified) and reclaimed asphalt content. The results showed that strength parameters (flexural strength and fracture toughness) increase with aging. It further shows that fracture work provides more complex information about the cracking behavior. For the aging indexes, it was found that for mixtures with modified binders and mixtures which did not contain reclaimed asphalt (RA), the values were higher. The aging indexes for fracture work showed different results for both performed tests.  相似文献

Cold recycled mixture (CRM) has been widely used around the world mainly because of its good ability to resist reflection cracking. In this study, mixed-mode cracking tests were carried out by the designed rotary test device to evaluate the cracking resistance of CRM. Through the finite element method, the heterogeneous model of CRM based on its meso-structure was established. The cracking process of CRM was simulated using the extended finite element method, and the influence of different notch lengths on its anti-cracking performance was studied. The results show that the mixed-mode fracture test method can effectively evaluate the cracking resistance of CRM by the proposed fracture parameters. The virtual tests under three of five kinds of mixed-cracking modes have good simulation to capture the cracking behavior of CRM. The effect of notch length on the initial crack angle and the crack propagation process of the CRM is mainly related to the distribution characteristics of its meso-structure. With the increase of the proportion of Mode II cracking, the crack development path gradually deviates, and the failure elements gradually increase. At any mixed-mode level, there is an obvious linear relationship between the peak load, fracture energy, and the notch length.  相似文献

With the promotion of cold recycled mixture (CRM) in cold areas and the improvement of its application layer, the enhancement of the low-temperature performance of mixtures is particularly important. The applicability of the current low-temperature bending test method to CRM is controversial. Firstly, the low-temperature crack resistance of CRM with different gradations and emulsified asphalt contents was studied by the indirect tensile (IDT) test and the semi-circular bending (SCB) test. Thereafter, the low-temperature performance evaluation index suitable for CRM was put forward. Then, the low-temperature performance of CRM with different gradations, fiber types, and contents was evaluated by using the above low-temperature evaluation index. The results show that the low-temperature performance of CRM with different gradations and emulsified asphalt contents can be distinguished by fracture work (W) and fracture energy (Gf). Not only do the test results have little variability (about 12% and 15%, respectively), but also the correlation coefficient with the new asphalt film thickness is the highest (0.8595 and 0.8939, respectively). Compared with coarse gradation (AC-25) and fine gradation (AC-13), medium-gradation (AC-20) CRM has higher low-temperature performance, and polyester fiber can significantly improve the low-temperature performance of CRM. Compared with non-fiber, the W and Gf of CRM of polyester fiber (0.3% content) can be increased by at least 42% and 30%, respectively.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of two waste materials from construction and industry, namely recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and Type C fly ash, on the overall performance of a special type of pavement surface mixture, porous asphalt mixture. Mixtures of different combinations of RCA (for partial aggregate replacement) and fly ash (for filler replacement) were prepared in the laboratory and tested for a variety of pavement surface performance parameters, including air-void content, permeability, Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, moisture susceptibility, Cantabro loss, macrotexture, and sound absorption. The analysis of the results showed that incorporating RCA or fly ash in a porous asphalt mixture slightly reduced the air-void content, permeability, and surface macrotexture of the mixture. A 10% replacement of granite aggregates with RCA in the porous asphalt mixtures led to a reduction in mixture stability, indirect tensile strength, resistance to raveling, and sound absorption. The further substitution of mineral filler with fly ash in the mixture, however, helped to offset the negative impact of RCA and brought the mechanical properties of the mixture with 10% RCA to levels comparable to those of the control mixture.  相似文献

Warm-mix asphalt technology has been applied to recycled rubber asphalt binder (RAB), which forms warm-mixed crumb rubber-modified asphalt binder (W-RAB) as a “green” material for environmental conservation and to enhance road performance. Furthermore, low-temperature cracking is one of the major distresses for asphalt pavement, which drastically restricts ride quality and service level. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to comparatively analyze the low-temperature properties of W-RABs based on thermal stress and the simple fractional model. W-RABs were obtained by mixing 60 mesh recycled rubber (CR) and two different types of warm-mix additives, namely viscosity reducer (1, 2, and 3%) and surfactant (0.4, 0.6, and 0.8%). First, Hopkins and Hamming’s numerical algorithm and the Boltzmann superposition principle were used for obtaining thermal stress σT. Subsequently, critical cracking temperature Tcr was derived using the single asymptote procedure (SAP) theory. Second, the simple fractional viscoelasticity model was used to calculate the creep compliance, damping ratio, and dissipation energy ratio, and the results were compared with the Superpave protocol results obtained with bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests. The results showed that a combination of CR and warm-mix additives could slightly improve the thermal crack resistance of the asphalt binder. The addition of 0.6% surfactant yielded the optimum performance, while only a high dosage (3%) of viscosity reducer provided a marked improvement in efficiency, which decreased with a decrease in temperature. This study recommends the use of RAB composited with 0.6% surfactant for areas with extremely low temperature.  相似文献

The incorporation of a recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) as a replacement of natural aggregates (NA) in road construction has been the subject of recent research. This tendency promotes sustainability, but its use depends mainly on the final product’s properties, such as chemical stability. This study evaluates the physical and chemical properties of RCAs from two different sources in comparison with the performance of NA. One RCA was obtained from the demolition of a building (recycled concrete aggregate of a building—RCAB) and another RCA from the rehabilitation of a Portland cement concrete pavement (recycled concrete aggregate from a pavement—RCAP). Characterization techniques such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV spectroscopy, and atomic absorption spectrometry were used to evaluate the RCAs’ coarse fractions for chemical potential effects on asphalt mixtures. NA was replaced with RCA at 15%, 30%, and 45% for each size of the coarse fractions (retained 19.0, 12.5, 9.5, and 4.75 sieves in mm). The mineralogical characterization results indicated the presence of quartz (SiO2) and calcite (CaCO3) as the most significant constituents of the aggregates. XFR showed that RCAs have lower levels of CaO and Al2O3 concerning NA. Potential reactions in asphalt mixtures by nitration, sulfonation, amination of organic compounds, and reactions by alkaline activation in the aggregates were discarded due to the minimum concentration of components such as NO2, (–SO3H), (–SO2Cl), and (Na) in the aggregates. Finally, this research concludes that studied RCAs might be used as replacements of coarse aggregate in asphalt mixtures since chemical properties do not affect the overall chemical stability of the asphalt mixture.  相似文献

Semi-flexible pavement (SFP) is widely used in recent years because of its good rutting resistance, but it is easy to crack under traffic loads. A large number of studies are aimed at improving its crack resistance. However, the understanding of its fatigue resistance and fatigue-cracking mechanism is limited. Therefore, the semi-circular bending (SCB) fatigue test is used to evaluate the fatigue resistance of the SFP mixture. SCB fatigue tests under different temperature values and stress ratio were used to characterize the fatigue life of the SFP mixture, and its laboratory fatigue prediction model was established. The distribution of various phases of the SFP mixture in the fracture surface was analyzed by digital image processing technology, and its fatigue cracking mechanism was analyzed. The results show that the SFP mixture has better fatigue resistance under low temperature and low stress ratio, while its fatigue resistance under other environmental and load conditions is worse than that of asphalt mixture. The main reason for the poor fatigue resistance of the SFP mixture is the poor deformation capacity and low strength of grouting materials. Furthermore, the performance difference between grouting material and the asphalt binder is large, which leads to the difference of fatigue cracking mechanism of the SFP mixture under different conditions. Under the fatigue load, the weak position of the SFP mixture at a low temperature is asphalt binder and its interface with other materials, while at medium and high temperatures, the weak position of the SFP mixture is inside the grouting material. The research provides a basis for the calculation of the service life of the SFP structure, provides a reference for the improvement direction of the SFP mixture composition and internal structure.  相似文献

Mode I fracture (tensile type) is the common cracking mode of asphalt pavements, which is caused by thermal cyclic loading or traffic. Some studies allow the analysis of the fracture modes by means of standardized tests, some of which are limited, difficult, with little repeatability or do not generate an adequate tension state. In this paper, mode I fracture toughness of asphalt mixtures with symmetric geometry specimens at intermediate temperature is evaluated. Experimental results from direct tension test and simulations on asphalt mix specimens subjected to intermediate temperatures of 10, 20 and 30 °C, mode I load rates (0.5, 1 and 2 mm/min) and notches (2 and 3 cm) were compared to find the variables that reflect the operating conditions of the asphalt mix. Results showed that shear stresses are 8.12% lower in the simulations with respect to the tests, while the load-deformation curves show 30% and 35% variation, where the temperature of 20 °C, the notch of 2 cm and the loading speed of 1 mm/min are the conditions that best represent the stress state of the test; moreover, it manages to consider the elastic and viscous components of the material.  相似文献

Traditional fatigue fracture theory and practice focus principally on structural design. It is thus too conservative and inappropriate when used to predict the high-cycle fatigue life of dies used for metal forming, especially cold forging. We propose a novel mean stress correction model and diagram to predict the high-cycle fatigue lives of cold forging dies, which focuses on the upper part of the equivalent fatigue strength curve. Considering the features of die materials characterized by high yield strength and low ductility, a straight line is assumed for the tensile yield line. To the contrary, a general curve is used to represent the fatigue strength. They are interpolated, based on the distance ratio, when finding an appropriate equivalent fatigue strength curve at the mean stress and stress amplitude between the line and curve. The approach is applied to a well-defined literature example to verify its validity and shed light on the characteristics of die fatigue life. The approach is also applied to practical forging and useful qualitative results are obtained.  相似文献

The reinforcement of asphalt layers with geosynthetics has been used for several decades, but proper evaluation of the influence of these materials on pavement fatigue life is still a challenging task. The presented study investigates a novel approach to the reinforcement of asphalt layers using a new type of geogrid composite, in which square or hexagonal polypropylene stiff monolithic paving grid with integral junctions is bonded to polypropylene non-woven paving fabric. The laboratory fatigue tests were performed on large asphalt concrete beams reinforced with the new type of geocomposite. Unreinforced samples were used as reference. Test results were analysed in several aspects, including the standardised approach based on stiffness reduction, but also using energy dissipation. The effect of reinforcement on pavement fatigue life was also estimated. Based on the obtained final results of fatigue life calculations, it can be concluded that the evaluated geogrid composites have an evident positive effect on pavement performance and have a significant potential to extend the overall pavement life, especially in the case of hexagonal grid.  相似文献

Cold in-place recycling (CIR) asphalt mixtures are an attractive eco-friendly method for rehabilitating asphalt pavement. However, the on-site CIR asphalt mixture generally has a high air void because of the moisture content during construction, and the moisture susceptibility is vital for estimating the road service life. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to characterize the effect of moisture on the high-temperature and low-temperature performance of a CIR asphalt mixture to predict CIR pavement distress based on a mechanistic–empirical (M-E) pavement design. Moisture conditioning was simulated by the moisture-induced stress tester (MIST). The moisture susceptibility performance of the CIR asphalt mixture (pre-mist and post-mist) was estimated by a dynamic modulus test and a disk-shaped compact tension (DCT) test. In addition, the standard solvent extraction test was used to obtain the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and CIR asphalt. Asphalt binder performance, including higher temperature and medium temperature performance, was evaluated by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) equipment and low-temperature properties were estimated by the asphalt binder cracking device (ABCD). Then the predicted pavement distresses were estimated based on the pavement M-E design method. The experimental results revealed that (1) DCT and dynamic modulus tests are sensitive to moisture conditioning. The dynamic modulus decreased by 13% to 43% at various temperatures and frequencies, and the low-temperature cracking energy decreased by 20%. (2) RAP asphalt incorporated with asphalt emulsion decreased the high-temperature rutting resistance but improved the low-temperature anti-cracking and the fatigue life. The M-E design results showed that the RAP incorporated with asphalt emulsion reduced the international roughness index (IRI) and AC bottom-up fatigue predictions, while increasing the total rutting and AC rutting predictions. The moisture damage in the CIR pavement layer also did not significantly affect the predicted distress with low traffic volume. In summary, the implementation of CIR technology in the project improved low-temperature cracking and fatigue performance in the asphalt pavement. Meanwhile, the moisture damage of the CIR asphalt mixture accelerated high-temperature rutting and low-temperature cracking, but it may be acceptable when used for low-volume roads.  相似文献

Secondary raw materials consist of production waste or material resulting from recycling processes, currently in large quantities, which can be injected back into the economic system as new raw materials. This study proposes jet grouting waste (JGW) as filler for hot and cold asphalt mixtures applied as base layers of road pavements and investigates the physical and mechanical properties. JGW is derived from soil consolidation performed during underground roadway tunnel construction. The research compares three asphalt mixtures: (a) hot mixture containing limestone aggregate-filler (HMA), (b) HMA containing JGW (HMAJ), (c) cold recycled asphalt mixture containing JGW (CRAJ). Leaching tests of JGW and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) were conducted; the best configurations of the three mixtures were determined by using the volumetric method through gyratory compaction. Three mastics with filler-to-binder ratios reflecting those of the asphalt mixtures were investigated through delta ring and ball test and frequency sweep test at 0.05% stress by using a dynamic shear rheometer. The morphology of each mixture was further investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that CRAJ with 28 days of curing time reached the indirect tensile strength (ITS) of HMA (0.73 MPa) within 14 days and, among all studied mixtures, returned the lowest cumulative strain, which was on average 30% lower than that of HMA and HMAJ. The results of this study have shown that the cold alternative mixture, CRAJ, promotes the reuse of two types of waste, RAP and JGW, as it fully meets the reference Italian Technical Standard and ensures good mixture performance in addition to conserving natural resources.  相似文献

In this paper, a parallel homogenization model for recycled concrete was proposed. A new type of finite element method, the base force element method, based on the complementary energy principle and the parallel homogenization model, is used to conduct meso-level damage research on recycled concrete. The stress–strain softening curve and failure mechanism of the recycled concrete under uniaxial tensile load are analyzed using the nonlinear damage analysis program of the base force element method based on the parallel homogenization model. The tensile strength and destructive mechanisms of recycled concrete materials are studied using this parallel homogenization model. The calculation results are compared with the results of the experiments and meso-level random aggregate model analysis methods. The research results show that this parallel homogenization analysis method can be used to analyze the nonlinear damage analysis of recycled concrete materials. The tensile strength, stress–strain softening curve, and crack propagation process of recycled concrete materials can be obtained using the present method.  相似文献
