The present paper aims to compare the microstructural and mechanical properties of CK45 carbon steel plates, joined by friction stir (FSW) and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding methods. Besides visual inspection, the welded joints and the base material were subsequently evaluated in respect of optical microstructures, hardness and tensile properties. Sound joints could be accomplished using both the FSW and TIG welding methods through proper selection of process parameters and the filler metal. The influence of a water-cooling system on the FSW and various filler metals on the quality of TIG welding were further assessed. Both the FS welded sample as well as TIG welded samples with two different filler metals ER70S-6 and ER80S-B2 exhibited brittle behavior that could be mitigated through optimized water cooling and use of R60 filler metal. A drastic reduction of brittle martensite phase constituent in the microstructure corroborated significant improvements in mechanical properties of the welded zones for both the FSW sample as well as TIG welded samples with R60 filler metal.  相似文献

This article deals with the dissimilar joining of two different grade Cr-Mo steel (2.25Cr-1Mo: P22 and modified 9Cr-1Mo: P91) for power plant application. The dissimilar butt-welded joint was produced for conventional V groove design by using the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process with the application of an ERNiCrMo-3 Ni-based super alloy filler. A microstructure characterization was performed to measure the inhomogeneity in the microstructure and element diffusion across the interface in a welded joint. The experiments were also performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the dissimilar welded joint in as-welded (AW) and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions. An acceptable level of the mechanical properties was obtained for the AW joint. After PWHT, a significant level of the element diffusion across the interface of the weld metal and P22 steel was observed, resulting in heterogeneity in microstructure near the interface, which was also supported by the hardness variation. Inhomogeneity in mechanical properties (impact strength and hardness) was measured across the weldments for the AW joint and was reduced after the PWHT. The tensile test results indicate an acceptable level of tensile properties for the welded joint in both AW and PWHT conditions and failure was noticed in the weak region of the P22 steel instead of the weld metal.  相似文献

The present work analyzed the microstructure, mechanical, and corrosion properties of a dissimilar activated tungsten inert gas (ATIG) welded 2205 duplex stainless-steel (2205 DSS) plate and AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel (316L ASS) and compared them to conventional dissimilar welded tungsten inert gas (TIG). The mixing design method is a tool used to establish the optimal combined flux to achieve a full-penetrated weld bead in one single pass. A microstructure study was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ATIG and TIG fusion zones revealed a matrix ferrite structure with intragranular austenite, Widmanstätten needles, allotriomorphic austenite at the grain boundaries, and plate-like precipitates free of deleterious phases such as sigma and chi phases or second austinite owing to the moderate heat input provided of 0.8 kJ/mm. Ferrite volume proportion measurements were carried out utilizing the areas image processing software. The average ferrite volume proportion attained 54% in the ATIG weld zone; however, it decreased to 47% for the TIG weld zone. The results showed that the optimal flux composed by 91% Mn2O3 and 9% Cr2O3 allowed a full penetrated weld to be obtained in one single pass. However, a double side weld is required for conventional TIG processes. The values of the tensile (599 Mpa), hardness (235 HV), and impact test (267 J/cm2) measurements of ATIG welds were close to those of conventional TIG welds. The elaborated flux did not degrade the mechanical properties of the joint; on the contrary, it reinforced the strength property. The width of the ATIG heat-affected zone was narrower than that of TIG welding by 2.6 times, ensuring fewer joint distortions. The potentiodynamic polarization test results showed a better electrochemical behavior for ASS 316L than with the weldment and the parent metal of DSS 2205.  相似文献

This paper investigates an experimental design of laser butt welding of S32520 duplex stainless steel, which has been passed out with the help of a pulsed Nd: YAG laser supply. The intention of the present research is to learn the impact of beam diameter, welding speed, and laser power on the superiority of the butt weld. The individuality of butt joints has been characterized in terms of tensile properties, fractography, and hardness. It was noticed that unbalanced particle orientations indirectly produce a comparatively fragile quality in the laser welded joint. The outcome of varying process parameters and interaction effect of process parameters on ultimate tensile strength and micro hardness were studied through analysis of experimental data. With different process parameters, the heat energy delivered to the material was changed, which was reflected in tensile strength measurement for different welded samples. From this present research, it was shown that, up to a certain level, an increase in process parameters amplified the tensile strength, but after that, certain level tensile strength decreased with the increase in process parameters. When process parameters exceeded that certain level, the required amount of heat energy was not delivered to the material, resulting in low bead width and less penetration, thus producing less strength in the welded joint. Less strength leads to more ductile weld joints. Microhardness was higher in the weld zone than in the base region of welded samples. However, the heat affected zone had a high microhardness range.  相似文献

Based on the idea of alloying welding seams, a series of Zn–xAl filler metals was calculated and designed for joining Mg/Al dissimilar metals by gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding. An infrared thermography system was used to measure the temperature of the welding pool during the welding process to investigate the solidification process. It was found that the mechanical properties of the welded joints were improved with the increasing of the Al content in the Zn–xAl filler metals, and when Zn–30Al was used as the filler metal, the ultimate tensile strength could reach a maximum of 120 MPa. The reason for the average tensile strength of the joint increasing was that the weak zone of the joint using Zn–30Al filler metal was generated primarily by α-Al instead of MgZn2. When Zn–40Al was used as the filler metal, a new transition zone, about 20 μm-wide, appeared in the edge of the fusion zone near the Mg base metal. Due to the transition zones consisting of MgZn2- and Al-based solid solution, the mechanical property of the joints was deteriorated.  相似文献

Based on the changes of microhardness, tensile strength, and impact resistance caused by the difference of macroscopic morphology and microstructure of welded joints, this paper studied the effect of different ultrasonic power on the properties of welded joints during the welding of homogeneous armor steel. It is experimentally found that the macroscopic morphology of those joints is very different. Compared with conventional welding, ultrasonic welding can increase the weld depth and the width of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) on either side of the weld. However, only the ultrasonic wave at an appropriate power level can increase the weld width. In addition, appropriate ultrasonic power can significantly improve the grain state of the weld. With the increase of ultrasonic power, the grain size in HAZ will decrease. The microhardness of the weld will first increase and then decrease, while the microhardness of the HAZ will increase. This is basically consistent with the changing trend of impact resistance. An ultrasonic wave can also increase the tensile strength of a welded joint up to 802 MPa, 12.4% higher than that in conventional welding. However, a high-power ultrasonic wave will bring down the tensile strength. This study provides guidance for the selection of ultrasonic-assisted regulation power to achieve the different properties of homogeneous armor steel joints.  相似文献

Butt joints of A5052 aluminum alloy and SS400 steel, with a new type of chamfered edge, are welded by means of metal inert gas welding and ER4043 Al-Si filler metal. The microhardness and microstructure of the joint are investigated. An intermetallic layer is found on the surface of the welding seam and SS400 steel sheet. The hardness of the intermetallic layer is examined using the Vickers hardness test. The average hardness values at the Intermetallic (IMC) layer zone and without the IMC layer zone were higher than that of the welding wire ER4043. The tensile strength test showed a fracture at the intermetallic layer when the tensile strength is 225.9 MPa. The tensile value test indicated the average of welds was equivalent to the 85% tensile strength of the A5052 aluminum alloy. The thickness of the intermetallic layers is non-uniform at different positions with the ranges from 1.95 to 5 μm. The quality of the butt joint is better if the intermetallic layer is minimized. The Si crystals which appeared at the welding seam, indicating that this element participated actively during the welding process, also contributed to the IMC layer’s formation.  相似文献

In this study, ultra-high-strength steels, namely, cold-hardened austenitic stainless steel AISI 301 and martensitic abrasion-resistant steel AR600, as base metals (BMs) were butt-welded using a disk laser to evaluate the microstructure, mechanical properties, and effect of post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 250 °C of the dissimilar joints. The welding processes were conducted at different energy inputs (EIs; 50–320 J/mm). The microstructural evolution of the fusion zones (FZ) in the welded joints was examined using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) and laser scanning confocal microscopy. The hardness profiles across the weldments and tensile properties of the as-welded joints and the corresponding PWHT joints were measured using a microhardness tester and universal material testing equipment. The EBSD results showed that the microstructures of the welded joints were relatively similar since the microstructure of the FZ was composed of a lath martensite matrix with a small fraction of austenite. The welded structure exhibited significantly higher microhardness at the lower EIs of 50 and 100 J/mm (640 HV). However, tempered martensite was promoted at the high EI of 320 J/mm, significantly reducing the hardness of the FZ to 520 HV. The mechanical tensile properties were considerably affected by the EI of the as-welded joints. Moreover, the PWHT enhanced the tensile properties by increasing the deformation capacity due to promoting the tempered martensite in the FZ.  相似文献

K-TIG (Keyhole Tungsten Inert Gas) method is a new, emerging welding technology that offers a significant acceleration of the joining process, even for very thick plates. However, its potential for welding of certain materials is still unknown. Particularly challenging are duplex steels as this technology does not allow the use of a filler material, which is crucial for these steels and for weld joint microstructure adjustment. In order to demonstrate the suitability of this technology for single-pass welding of 1.4462 duplex steel detailed studies of the microstructure of the weld joints obtained for different linear energies were carried out and discussed with respect to their mechanical properties. According to the results obtained, the heat-affected zone (HAZ) shows a microstructure similar to the HAZ of duplex steel welded with the traditional TIG multi-pass methods. However, the weld, due to the lack of filler material, had a microstructure different to that typical for duplex steel welded joints and was also characterized by an increased content of ferrite. However, all joints, both in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties, met the requirements of the relevant standards. Moreover, the K-TIG process can be carried out in the linear energy range typical of duplex steel welding, although further optimization is needed.  相似文献

In the present study, 8 mm-thick 5251 aluminum alloy was self-reacting friction stir welded (SRFSW) employing an optimized friction stir tool to analyze the effect of welding speed from 150 to 450 mm/min on the microstructure and mechanical properties at a constant rotation speed of 400 rpm. The results indicated that high-quality surface finish and defect-free joints were successfully obtained under suitable process parameters. The microhardness distribution profiles on the transverse section of joint exhibited a typical “W” pattern. The lowest hardness values located at the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and the width of the softened region decreased with increasing welding speed. The tensile strength significantly decreased due to the void defect, which showed mixed fracture characteristics induced by the decreasing welding speed. The average tensile strength and elongation achieved by the SRFSW process were 242.61 MPa and 8.3% with optimal welding conditions, and the fracture surface exhibited a typical toughness fracture mode.  相似文献

In this paper, a comparison of the mechanical properties of high-strength low-alloy S460N steel welded joints is presented. The welded joints were made by the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process in the air environment and water, by the local cavity welding method. Welded joints were tested following the EN ISO 15614-1:2017 standard. After welding, the non-destructive—visual, penetrant, radiographic, and ultrasonic (phased array) tests were performed. In the next step, the destructive tests, as static tensile-, bending-, impact- metallographic (macroscopic and microscopic) tests, and Vickers HV10 measurements were made. The influence of weld porosity on the mechanical properties of the tested joints was also assessed. The performed tests showed that the tensile strength of the joints manufactured in water (567 MPa) could be similar to the air welded joint (570 MPa). The standard deviations from the measurements were—47 MPa in water and 33 MPa in the air. However, it was also stated that in the case of a complex state of stress, for example, bending, torsional and tensile stresses, the welding imperfections (e.g., pores) significantly decrease the properties of the welded joint. In areas characterized by porosity the tensile strength decreased to 503 MPa. Significant differences were observed for bending tests. During the bending of the underwater welded joint, a smaller bending angle broke the specimen than was the case during the air welded joint bending. Also, the toughness and hardness of joints obtained in both environments were different. The minimum toughness for specimens welded in water was 49 J (in the area characterized by high porosity) and in the air it was 125 J (with a standard deviation of 23 J). The hardness in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) for the underwater joint in the non-tempered area was above 400 HV10 (with a standard deviation of 37 HV10) and for the air joint below 300 HV10 (with a standard deviation of 17 HV10). The performed investigations showed the behavior of S460N steel, which is characterized by a high value of carbon equivalent (CeIIW) 0.464%, during local cavity welding.  相似文献

The thick plate narrow gap welding of 25Cr2NiMo1V rotor steel is achieved by metal active gas arc welding, in which the weld gap was 18.04–19.9 mm. After welding, the weldment was heat treated at 580 °C (20 h). The impact and tensile properties in the as-welded and heat-treated were studied. The results show that after heat treatment, the coarse carbides in the center of the weld were transformed into fine granular carbides distributed along the grain boundaries, and the quantity of carbide precipitates in the weld near the fusion line was reduced. The tensile fracture mode changed from a ductile fracture to a combination of brittle and ductile fractures, and the tensile strength of the weld metal changed from 605 MPa to 543 MPa. After heat-treated, the radiation zone of the weld center changed from a brittle fracture to a combination of brittle and ductile fractures, and the impact energy changed from 141 J to 183 J; the characteristics of the brittle fracture in the radial zone of the fusion line were more obvious, and the impact energy changed from 113 J to 95 J. Therefore, after heat treatment, the toughness of the welded metal was improved, without reducing the strength and hardness of the welded metal to a large extent.  相似文献

This investigation attempts to explore the weld characteristics of a laser welded dissimilar joint of ferritic/martensitic 9Cr-1Mo-V-Nb (P91) steel and Incoloy 800HT austenitic nickel alloy. This dissimilar joint is essential in power generating nuclear and thermal plants operating at 600–650 °C. In such critical operating conditions, it is essential for a dissimilar joint to preserve its characteristics and be free from any kind of defect. The difference between the physical properties of P91 and Incoloy 800HT makes their weldability challenging. Thus, the need for detailed characterization of this dissimilar weld arises. The present work intends to explore the usage of an unconventional welding process (i.e., laser beam welding) and its effect on the joint’s characteristics. The single-pass laser welding technique was employed to obtain maximum penetration through the keyhole mode. The welded joint morphology and mechanical properties were studied in as-welded (AW) and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) conditions. The macro-optical examination shows the complete penetrations with no inclusion and porosities in the weld. The microstructural study was done in order to observe the precipitation and segregation of elements in dendritic and interface regions. Solidification cracks were observed in the weld fusion zone, confirming the susceptibility of Incoloy 800HT to such cracks due to a mismatch between the melting point and thermal conductivity of the base metals. Failure from base metal was observed in tensile test results of standard AW specimen with a yield stress of 265 MPa, and after PWHT, the value increased to 297 MPa. The peak hardness of 391 HV was observed in the P91 coarse grain heat-affected zone (CGHAZ), and PWHT confirmed the reduction in hardness. The impact toughness results that were obtained were inadequate, as the maximum value of impact toughness was obtained for AW P91 heat-affected zone (HAZ) 108 J and the minimum for PWHT Incoloy 800HT HAZ 45 J. Thus, difficulty in obtaining a dissimilar joint with Incoloy 800HT using the laser beam welding technique was observed due to its susceptibility to solidification cracking.  相似文献

The presented research background is a car body manufacturer’s request to test the car body’s components welded from dissimilar steel sheets. In view of the vehicle crew’s protection, it is necessary to study the static and dynamic behavior of welded steels. Therefore, the influence of laser welding on the mechanical and dynamical properties, microstructure, microhardness, and welded joint surface roughness of interstitial free CR180IF and dual-phase DP600 steels were investigated. Static tensile tests were carried out by using testing machine Zwick 1387, and dynamic test used rotary hammer machine RSO. Sheet steel was tested at different strain rates ranging from 10−3 to 103 s−1. The laser welds’ microstructure and microhardness were evaluated in the base metal, heat-affected zone, and fusion zone. The comprehensive analysis also included chemical analysis, fracture surface analysis, and roughness measurement. The research results showed that the strain rate had an influence on the mechanical properties of base materials and welded joints. The dynamic loading increases the yield stress more than the ultimate tensile strength for the monitored steels, while the most significant increase was recorded for the welded material.  相似文献

To improve the loose structure and serious porosity of (Al–Zn–Mg–Cu) 7075 aluminum alloy laser-welded joints, aging treatment, double-sided ultrasonic impact treatment (DSUIT), and a combination of aging and DSUIT (A–DSUIT) were used to treat joints. In this experiment, the mechanism of A–DSUIT on the microstructure and properties of welded joints was analyzed. The microstructure of the welded joints was observed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The hardness and tensile properties of the welded components under the different processes were examined via Vickers hardness test and a universal tensile testing machine. The results showed that, after the aging treatment, the dendritic structure of the welded joints transformed into an equiaxed crystal structure. Moreover, the residual tensile stress generated in the welding process was weakened, and the hardness and tensile strength were significantly improved. After DSUIT, a plastic deformation layer of a certain thickness was generated from the surface downward, and the residual compressive stress was introduced to a certain depth of the joint. However, the weld zone unaffected by DSUIT still exhibited residual tensile stress. The inner microhardness of the joint surface improved; the impact surface hardness was the largest and gradually decreased inward to the weld zone base metal hardness, with a small improvement in the tensile strength. Compared with the single treatment process, the microstructural and mechanical properties of the welded joint after A–DSUIT were comprehensively improved. The microhardness and tensile strength of the welded joint reached 200 HV and 615 MPa, respectively, for an increase of 45.8% and 61.8%, respectively. Observation of the fractures of the tensile specimens under the different treatment processes showed that the fractures before the aging treatment were mainly ductile fractures while those after were mainly brittle fractures. After DSUIT of the welded joints, a clear and dense plastic deformation layer was observed in the fracture of the tensile specimens and effectively improved the tensile properties of the welded joints. Under the EBSD characterization, the larger the residual compressive stress near the ultrasonic impact surface, the smaller the grain diameter and misorientation angle, and the lower the texture strength. Finally, after A–DSUIT, the hardness and tensile properties improved the most.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose hot-wire plasma welding, a combination of the plasma welding (PAW) process and the hot-wire process in the additive manufacturing (AM) process. Generally, in plasma welding for AM processes, the deposit grain size increases, and the hardness decreases as the wall height increases. The coarse microstructure, along with the large grain size, corresponds to an increase in deposit temperature, which leads to poorer mechanical properties. At the same time, the hot-wire laser process seems to contain an overly high interstitial amount of oxygen and nitrogen. With an increasing emphasis on sustainability, the hot-wire plasma welding process offers significant advantages: deeper and narrow penetration than the cold-wire plasma welding, improved design flexibility, large deposition rates, and low dilution percentages. Thus, the hot-wire plasma welding process was investigated in this work. The wire used in the welding process was a titanium American Welding Society (AMS) 4951F (Grade 2) welding wire (diameter 1.6 mm), in which the welding was recorded in real time with a charge-coupled device camera (CCD camera). We studied three parameters of the hot-wire plasma welding process: (1) the welding speed, (2) wire current, and (3) wire feeding speed. The mechanical and physical properties (porosity, Vickers hardness, microstructure, and tensile strength) were examined. It was found that the number of layers, the length and width of the molten pool, and the width of the deposited bead increased, while the height of the layer increased, and the hot-wire current played an important role in the deposition. In addition, these results were benchmarked against specimens created by a hot-wire plasma welding/wire-based additive manufacturing process with an intention to develop the hot-wire PAW process as a potential alternative in the additive manufacturing industry.  相似文献

The low carbon martensitic stainless AWS 410NiMo steel has in its chemical composition 13% chromium, 4% nickel, and 0.4% molybdenum (wt.%) and is used in turbine recovery, rotors, and high-pressure steam pump housings due to its resistance to impact at low temperatures, as well as to corrosion and cavitation. Those applications of the AWS 410NiMo steel frequently demand repair, which is performed by welding or cladding. Arc welding is a well-established technique for joining materials and presents several parameters that influence the mechanical performance of the weld bead. Although numerous welding processes exist, optimizing welding parameters for specific applications and materials is always challenging. The present work deals with a systematic study to verify the correlation between the pulsed fluxed core arc welding (FCAW) parameters, namely pulse current and frequency, welding speed, and contact tip work distance (CTWD), and the bead morphology, microstructure formation, residual stress, and hardness of the martensitic clad. The substrate used was the AISI 1020 steel, and the AWS 410NiMo steel was the filler metal for clad deposition. From the initial nine (9) samples, three (3) were selected for in-depth characterization. Lower heat input resulted in lower dilution, more elevated hardness, and lower compressive residual stresses. Therefore, the results highlight the need for selecting the proper heat input, even when using a pulsed FCAW procedure, to achieve the desired performance of the clad. In the present case, a higher heat input appears to be more advantageous owing to the lower convexity index, smooth hardness transition between fusion and heat-affected zones in addition to more elevated compressive stresses.  相似文献

This work investigates the feasibility of using friction stir welding (FSW) process as a groove filling welding technique to weld duplex stainless steel (DSS) that is extensively used by petroleum service companies and marine industries. For the FSW experiments, three different groove geometries without root gap were designed and machined in a DSS plates 6.5 mm thick. FSW were carried out to produce butt-joints at a constant tool rotation rate of 300 rpm, traverse welding speed of 25 mm/min, and tilt angle of 3o using tungsten carbide (WC) tool. For comparison, the same DSS plates were welded using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The produced joints were evaluated and characterized using radiographic inspection, optical microscopy, and hardness and tensile testing. Electron back scattering diffraction (EBSD) was used to examine the grain structure and phases before and after FSW. The initial results indicate that FSW were used successfully to weld DSS joints with different groove designs with defect-free joints produced using the 60° V-shape groove with a 2 mm root face without root gap. This friction stir welded (FSWed) joint was further investigated and compared with the GTAW joint. The FSWed joint microstructure mainly consists of α and γ with significant grain refining; the GTWA weld contains different austenitic-phase (γ) morphologies such as grain boundary austenite (GBA), intragranular austenite precipitates (IGA), and Widmanstätten austenite (WA) besides the ferrite phase (α) in the weld zone (WZ) due to the used high heat input and 2209 filler rod. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation of the FSWed joint are enhanced over the GTAW weldment by 21%, 41%, and 66% and over the BM by 65%, 33%, and 54%, respectively. EBSD investigation showed a significant grain refining after FSW with grain size average of 1.88 µm for austenite and 2.2 µm for ferrite.  相似文献

The results disclosed that both the microstructure and mechanical properties of AA7075-T6 laser welds are considerably influenced by the heat input. In comparison with high heat input (arc welding), a smaller weld fusion zone with a finer dendrite arm spacing, limited loss of alloying elements, less intergranular segregation, and reduced residual tensile stress was obtained using low heat input. This resulted in a lower tendency of porosity and hot cracking, which improved the welded metal’s soundness. Subsequently, higher hardness as well as higher tensile strength for the welded joint was obtained with lower heat input. A welded joint with better mechanical properties and less mechanical discrepancy is important for better productivity. The implemented high-power fiber laser has enabled the production of a low heat input welded joint using a high welding speed, which is of considerable importance for minimizing not only the fusion zone size but also the deterioration of its properties. In other words, high-power fiber laser welding is a viable solution for recovering the mechanical properties of the high-strength AA 7075-T6 welds. These results are encouraging to build upon for further improvement of the mechanical properties to be comparable with the base metal.  相似文献

In this paper, 8.0 mm thickness 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) workpieces were welded with a keyhole tungsten inert gas (K-TIG) welding system under different welding speeds. After welding, the morphologies of the welds under different welding speed conditions were compared and analyzed. The microstructure, two-phase ratio of austenite/ferrite, and grain boundary characteristics of the welded joints were studied, and the microhardness and tensile properties of the welded joints were tested. The results show that the welding speed has a significant effect on the weld morphology, the two-phase ratio, grain boundary misorientation angle (GBMA), and mechanical properties of the welded joint. When the welding speed increased from 280 mm/min to 340 mm/min, the austenite content and the two-phase ratio in the weld metal zone (WMZ) decreased. However, the ferrite content in the WMZ increased. The proportion of the Σ3 coincident site lattice grain boundary (CSLGB) decreased as the welding speed increased, which has no significant effect on the tensile strength of welded joints. The microhardness of the WMZ and the tensile strength of the welded joint gradually increased when the welding speed was 280–340 mm/min. The 2205 DSS K-TIG welded joints have good plasticity.  相似文献
