In this existential-phenomenological investigation 15 women were interviewed about their experience of recovering from intimate partner violence (IPV). The purpose of the study was to examine the healing process from IPV from the perspective of those who have experienced it. Transcribed interviews were analyzed using a hermeneutic process. The thematic structure of a woman's journey is comprised of three distinct but connected phases of her life: the abusive past, the struggles of freeing herself physically and emotionally from the abuse/past, and finally the healing/growth that occurs as a woman releases herself from the bitterness and anger of the past. Most of the women in this study were able to experience the peace and healing that occurs with recovery, although a few remained emotionally stuck and unable to free themselves from the past. Thus, there are two stories that are told in this study. The first story is about a journey of recovery. Sadly, the second story is about nonrecovery.  相似文献

Surgery to increase breast size is a common procedure In this paper we examine the reasons why women choose to undergo the procedure, the history of breast enhancement, current surgical approaches, possible complications and their treatment Driving forces behind the choice to have augmentation surgery appear to be related to feelings of low self-esteem and self-confidence Although there is a large literature related to breast augmentation, little of it is research-based The research that there is focuses on complications and their treatment, with an emphasis on capsular contracture Few of the studies are long-term, although complications have been noted as long as 25 years after initial implantation There is a need for research into the experience of women undergoing augmentation mammaplasty but, perhaps more importantly, there is also a need to examine ways in which women can be helped to accept themselves as they are  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to explore and analyse the journey of recovery which is undertaken by women who have been sexually assaulted, with the aim of discovering the grounded theory of recovery from sexual assault within the first six months following the event of rape. The main research question was: 'What is the journey of recovery that is undertaken by women within the first six months following sexual assault?' Another question that developed during data collection and data analysis was 'What is the meaning that women attach to recovery?' The findings are discussed under the eight concepts or categories and the context and the intervening conditions that influence the journey of recovery from sexual assault trauma. Refer to part 1 article. These are complemented with abstracts of data from the participants' voices and the related discussions. The developed theory highlights the process and the interconnectedness of the different stages of what the women experience in their journey of recovery from sexual assault trauma.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo explore the lived experience of in vitro fertilization (IVF) from the perspective of survivors of sexual abuse.DesignIn this qualitative study, narrative analysis provided the framework to understand participants’ IVF experiences.SettingParticipants were recruited through a regional support group for women with infertility.ParticipantsThree women (mean age = 33.3 years) who self-identified as a survivor of sexual abuse and had at least one IVF experience participated in this study.MeasurementsEach participant wrote a narrative text of her experience. Burke’s method was followed for analysis of the narratives.ResultsThe most frequent imbalance was between what is happening (i.e., IVF procedures) and how the health care team provided the care. The repercussion was a negative experience for survivors, stemming from an insensitive manner in which their physical and verbal care was delivered by health care teams. These women were also deeply protective of their oocytes (eggs), embryos, and children.ConclusionHealth care providers may use these findings to better meet the physical and psychological needs of survivors of sexual abuse who are coping with infertility. Providers can have a more positive effect on the IVF experience of survivors by ensuring that the procedures they perform and the information they share are explained fully and delivered in a trauma-informed manner.  相似文献

This phenomenological study explores the "lived experience" of 8 women with stage I or II breast cancer who used mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR). The following 4 themes were identified: (1) the cancer journey: a shift in perception, (2) the treatment journey: the experience of MBSR, (3) the journey toward recovery, and (4) the journey toward self.  相似文献

Title.  Elderly peoples' experience of nursing care after a stroke: from a gender perspective.
Aim.  This paper is a report of a study conducted to explore, from a gender perspective, older people's experiences of nursing care after a stroke.
Background.  Little attention has been given to gender differences in nursing care. The majority of people who have a stroke are older. Improving knowledge of the gender perspectives of older men and women regarding nursing care after stroke is crucial.
Method.  This was a qualitative study based on interviews with five women and five men between 66 and 75 years of age, who had received nursing care at a ward for stroke rehabilitation. The data were collected in 2006. Qualitative content analysis of the interviews was carried out.
Findings.  A main theme and five categories, all common to both men and women, were identified. The main theme, to promote recovery of the body, encompassed the categories. There were, however, gender differences in how the nursing care received was experienced. The ways patients experienced nursing care seemed to be linked with their lives as women and men before they had the stroke. Their perceptions are linked with their lives as women and men before they had their stroke. Both men and women will reclaim former abilities but what they perceive to be the goals of nursing care and rehabilitation may differ.
Conclusion.  Nurses need to increase their awareness and knowledge concerning the similarities and gender differences in the experiences and needs of older people, both men and women.  相似文献

Motherhood starts suddenly when delivering a very preterm baby. The infants spend months in hospital and mothers visit or stay close to their tiny newborns. The aim of this qualitative secondary analysis was to investigate mothers' of very preterm infants' experiences of being a mother, the meaning of staying in the hospital on a 24-hour basis and the experience of home-coming. Five mothers were interviewed repeatedly and data analyzed following Van Manen's phenomenology. The essence of the findings ‘Being on a journey’ is presented in three themes: ‘A sudden and uncertain entering to motherhood’, ‘Being on their way as preterm mothers in a hospital world’ and ‘At home at last – entering a new motherhood journey’. Each theme has a number of subthemes that substantiate the theme. The knowledge from this study hopefully will allow neonatal nurses to tactfully continue guiding mothers of very preterm infants on their motherhood journey.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to explore women's bodily experiences of suffering from eating difficulties (ED). The research question was: How do women who suffer from ED experience the bodily aspects related to their condition? Women suffering from ED experience problems in both the physical and emotional areas. Few qualitative studies have specifically addressed sufferers' bodily experiences related to ED. An explorative design was used. The data were collected by means of focus group interviews on the subject of ED‐related problems, guilt and shame, and being a mother. The interpretation of the qualitative data was inspired by hermeneutic content analysis. The main theme, ‘Powerful feelings of being trapped in and ashamed of one's own body’, comprised two themes: ‘The feeling of being trapped by overwhelming physical sensations’ and ‘The feeling of being ashamed of one's own body’. Bodily experiences were reported as strong. One clinical implication for nurses is to acknowledge this fact and make it possible for these women to articulate their difficulties, especially those connected to the feelings of being trapped and ashamed. Support groups focusing on these themes could be one way of assisting women and easing some of the negative feelings associated with ED.  相似文献

A phenomenological research design was used to explore the meaning of singleness to women who have never married. Nine never-married, heterosexual, childless women were interviewed about how they experienced singleness in their lives. Constant comparative analysis of the data resulted in 13 categories that reflected the meaning of singleness for this group of never-married women. Singleness emerged as a multifaceted experience with different meanings, not only for different women, but also for an individual never-married women, depending on her perspective at any given point in time. The findings of this study, by sensitizing nurses to the subjective world of never-married women, can enhance the act of nursing female clients who have never married.  相似文献
