Measuring behavioural susceptibility to obesity: validation of the child eating behaviour questionnaire

The Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ; [Wardle, J., Guthrie, C.A., Sanderson, S., & Rapoport, L. (2001). Development of the children's eating behaviour questionnaire. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 42, 963-970]) is a parent-report questionnaire designed to assess eating styles related to obesity risk. It has been shown to have a robust factor structure and good internal reliability, but has not been validated against behavioural measures of eating. In the present study, associations were examined between three CEBQ scales (Satiety Responsiveness, SR; Food Responsiveness, FR; Enjoyment of Food, EF) and four aspects of eating behaviour (eating without hunger, caloric compensation, eating rate and energy intake at a meal) aggregated across up to five occasions, in a sample of 4-5-year olds. In multiple regression, the aggregated behavioural measures of eating explained 56% of the variance in SR, 33% of the variance in FR and 40% of the variance in EF. These findings support the validity of the CEBQ as a parent-report instrument to assess 'obesogenic' eating behaviours in children. An easily-administered measure such as the CEBQ will be valuable in gathering data on the scale required to study the behavioural phenotype associated with obesity risk.

The Use of Multiple Versus Single Assessment Time Points to Improve Screening Accuracy in Identifying Children at Risk for Later Serious Antisocial Behavior

Guided by Kraemer et al.’s (Psychological Methods, 3:257–271, 1999) framework for measuring the potency of risk factors, we sought to improve on the classification accuracy reported in Petras et al. (Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 43:88–96, 2004a) and Petras et al. (Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 44:790–797, 2005) by using multiple as opposed to single point in time assessments of early aggressive and disruptive behavior in the classification of youth who would likely benefit from targeted preventive interventions. Different from Petras et al. (2004a, 2005), the outcome used in this study included serious antisocial behavior in young adulthood as well as in adolescence. Among males, the use of multiple time points did not yield greater classification accuracy than the highest single time points, that is, third and fifth grades. For females, although fifth grade represented the best single time point in terms of classification accuracy, no significant association was found between earlier time points and the later outcome, rendering a test of the multiple time points hypothesis moot. The findings presented in this study have strong implications for the design of targeted intervention for violence prevention, indicating that the screening quality based on aggression ratings during the elementary years is rather modest, particularly for females.     

Prevention of Behavior Problems for Children in Foster Care: Outcomes and Mediation Effects

Parent training for foster parents is mandated by federal law and supported by state statues in nearly all states; however, little is known about the efficacy of that training, and recent reviews underscore that the most widely used curricula in the child welfare system (CWS) have virtually no empirical support (Grimm, Youth Law News, April-June:3-29, 2003). On the other hand, numerous theoretically based, developmentally sensitive parent training interventions have been found to be effective in experimental clinical and prevention intervention trials (e.g., Kazdin and Wassell, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 39:414-420, 2000; McMahon and Forehand, Helping the noncompliant child, Guilford Press, New York, USA, 2003; Patterson and Forgatch, Parents and adolescents: I. Living together, Castalia Publishing, Eugene, OR, USA, 1987; Webster-Stratton et al., Journal of Clinical Child Pyschology Psychiatry, 42:943-952, 2001). One of these, Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC; Chamberlain, Treating chronic juvenile offenders: Advances made through the Oregon Multidimensional Treatment Foster Care model, American Psychological Association, Washington, DC, USA, 2003), has been used with foster parents of youth referred from juvenile justice. The effectiveness of a universal intervention, KEEP (Keeping Foster Parents Trained and Supported) based on MTFC (but less intensive) was tested in a universal randomized trial with 700 foster and kinship parents in the San Diego County CWS. The goal of the intervention was to reduce child problem behaviors through strengthening foster parents' skills. The trial was designed to examine effects on both child behavior and parenting practices, allowing for specific assessment of the extent to which improvements in child behavior were mediated by the parenting practices targeted in the intervention. Child behavior problems were reduced significantly more in the intervention condition than in the control condition, and specific parenting practices were found to mediate these reductions, especially for high-risk children in foster families reporting more than six behavior problems per day at baseline.

A feasibility study to assess service providers' perspectives regarding the use of the child and adolescent functional assessment scale in ontario

This brief report describes a feasibility study conducted to assess the level of satisfaction with the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS) rater reliability training, the ease of achieving interrater reliability in rating CAFAS, and the clinical utility of CAFAS as an outcome measurement tool for the province of Ontario, from the perspective of service providers. This study has been instrumental in the development of a 4-year province-wide measurement initiative. The study proved useful to government policy and decision-makers, mental health administrators, clinicians, and mental health service researchers interested in the implementation of outcome measurement tools. It highlighted the fact that at least 85% of respondents were satisfied with CAFAS training and the ease of achieving interrater reliability. Eating disorder in a 6-year-old Asian girl with ethyl malonic adipic aciduria

Accurate data are not available for the prevalence of eating disorders amongst the Asian population in Britain. Only a handful of cases have been reported in the literature [Bhadrinath (1990). British Journal of Psychiatry, 156, 565–568.] suggested that it is an uncommon phenomenon despite Dolan's recent finding [Dolan, Lacey, & Evans (1990). British Journal of Psychiatry, 157, 523–528.] that there were elevated Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) scores in a sample of young Asian adults compared with Caucasians. We report a case of an Asian girl with a rare inborn error of metabolism and an eating disorder. © 1993 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Disparities in the geographical distribution of authorship between invited and peer reviewed papers

Fifty issues of the British Medical Journal (BMJ), The Lancet, The British Journal of Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine were scrutinized. Papers were designated as invited or peer reviewed and the geographical location of the first author was recorded. For UK-based authors, the latitude and longitude of the host institution was noted and was allocated to one of the UK regions. Of invited papers 805 of 1227 (66%) were by UK-based authors compared with 1442 of 2896 peer reviewed papers (50%), odds ratio 1.92 (95% CI 1.67-2.21) with a similar pattern prevailing in each of the four journals. Within the UK, authorships of invited versus peer reviewed papers showed a preponderance of invited authors based in southeast England, odds ratio 1.30 (95% CI 1.09-1.56). For individual Journals, the Lancet and the British Journal of Psychiatry showed fewer regional disparities in authorship than the BMJ and Psychological Medicine. These disparities may lead to nationalism and parochiality in the content of invited papers. Journal editors may wish to review selection practices for authorship of invited papers.     

Current practice in the management of Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD)

BACKGROUND: The management of Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD) is controversial and guidance published by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) suggests a multidisciplinary approach. METHODS: We evaluated the patterns of referral and techniques used in the diagnosis and management of ADHD in Wirral Health Authority by studying the case notes of 391 children diagnosed between 1994 and August 2000. RESULTS: The majority of cases were referred from Primary Care and the detected prevalence was 8/1000. Boys were diagnosed more frequently than girls (12 : 1) and the mean age at diagnosis was 8.7 years; girls were more likely to have been diagnosed prior to age 8. The use of behaviour rating questionnaires and school visits as an aid to diagnosis increased during the study period. Management by Child Psychiatry and Community Paediatric services was similar with stimulant medication prescribed in 91% of cases; Child Psychiatry services were more likely to give advice on behaviour management than Paediatric services. Twelve per cent of cases were managed by both services, or in joint Outpatient clinics. Outpatient follow-up was most likely to occur at six monthly intervals and required 1312 appointments per year. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the management of children with ADHD in Wirral Health Authority is compatible with NICE guidance. Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity is a significant burden on clinical services and long-term planning is required.

Current Supervision Scholarship in Psychology

Abstract

This paper reviewed five years of supervision-related articles that had been published in psychology journals. Almost one-fourth of the articles were published in Professional Psychology: Research & Practice. The other journals most frequently represented in this review were the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Journal of Clinical Psychology, and Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, Practice, Training. The largest single category of articles during this five-year period concerned supervision that in some way was harmful. Surprisingly few articles, though, concerned issues of race or culture. The most frequent type of article was theoretical or conceptual in nature. However, when the various categories of article that were in one way or another research-based were combined, this comprised the largest overall category.
