Linking faculty development to improvement of community health is of particular interest to health professions educators and researchers. While individuals and institutions engaged in health professions education have the potential to improve health, limited literature connects capacity building in education with improvements in health. Understanding the mechanism by which faculty development may promote development of socially accountable institutions and improve health can be useful for improving this connection and evaluating program effectiveness.  相似文献

Findings from the science of learning have clear implications for those responsible for teaching and curricular design. However, this data has been historically siloed from educators in practice, including those in health professions education. In this article, we aim to bring practical tips from the science of learning to health professions educators. We have chosen to organize the tips into six themes, highlighting strategies for 1) improving the processing of information, 2) promoting effortful learning for greater retention of knowledge over time, 3) applying learned information to new and varied contexts, 4) promoting the development of expertise, 5) harnessing the power of emotion for learning, and 6) teaching and learning in social contexts. We conclude with the importance of attending to metacognition in our learners and ourselves. Health professions education can be strengthened by incorporating these evidence-based techniques.  相似文献

Purpose: Summarize the published literature on team-based learning (TBL) in health professions education (HPE) using the TBL conceptual framework to identify gaps that can guide future research

Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar were searched through May 2016 for English-language articles regarding the use of TBL in HPE. Reviewers independently extracted data and coded for the seven elements in Michaelsen’s Model of TBL.

Results: A total of 118 articles met inclusion criteria. The number of articles published yearly on TBL has grown steadily, more than tripling between 2011 and 2016. Most studies (55; 47%) involved undergraduate medical students and took place in the US (72; 61%). The most commonly studied framework component was Teacher and Learner Attitudes (97; 82%). Other commonly studied elements included Learning Outcomes (85; 72%) and Team Characteristics (25; 21%). Contextual Factors affecting TBL was addressed in one study.

Conclusions: A substantial body of literature examines the effect that TBL has on traditional measures of achievement. However, many dimensions of TBL have not been well studied, including Teacher Decisions about TBL, Contextual Factors that affect TBL, Learners’ Engagement, and Pattern of Engagement within Teams. Future research in these areas could determine the best use of TBL in HPE.  相似文献

Background: Cognitive psychology studies demonstrate that subjects who attempt to recall information show better learning, retention, and transfer than subjects who spend the same time studying the same material (test-enhanced learning, TEL). We systematically reviewed TEL interventions in health professions education.

Methods: We searched 13 databases, 14 medical education journals, and reference lists. Inclusion criteria included controlled studies of TEL that compared TEL to studying the same material or to a different TEL strategy. Two raters screened articles for inclusion, abstracted information, determined quality scores, and calculated the standardized mean difference (SMD) for the learning outcomes.

Results: Inter-rater agreement was excellent for all comparisons. The 19 included studies reported 41 outcomes with data sufficient to determine a SMD. TEL interventions included short answer questions, multiple choice questions, simulation, and standardized patients. Five of six immediate learning outcomes (SMD 0.09–0.44), 21 of 23 retention outcomes (SMD 0.12–2.5), and all seven transfer outcomes (SMD 0.33–1.1) favored TEL over studying.

Conclusions: TEL demonstrates robust effects across health professions, learners, TEL formats, and learning outcomes. The effectiveness of TEL extends beyond knowledge assessed by examinations to clinical applications. Educators should include TEL in health professions curricula to enhance recall, retention, and transfer.  相似文献

The challenges facing health professions education in Africa focus on physical infrastructure, accreditation systems, student selection and faculty recruitment, retention, and development. Higher education in the health professions must be closely aligned with community health needs, and with the training and support of community health workers. A key ingredient in changing institutions in this way is implementation of effective strategies for strengthening the faculty. In addition, information systems, and their prerequisite stable electric power supply, must be supported by internal public resources combined with external aid. These infrastructure investments will facilitate better quality education, improved diffusion of information among schools, and more useful data for self study by institutions.  相似文献

While scholarship is a critical component of the mission of all academic departments, little is known about how to approach the scholarly development of clinician faculty. The authors developed a thematically based faculty development curriculum with two primary components: evidence-based clinical practice and critical appraisal of current clinical research. They took a task management approach to reducing anticipated barriers to program success by instituting a regularly scheduled seminar series, providing evidence-based reading materials, recruiting clinician faculty as speakers for the clinical presentations, and providing continuing medical education credits for seminar attendance. This case study illustrates a faculty development curriculum that stimulated scholarly discussion and research activities in the authors' clinician faculty.  相似文献

Introduction: Increasingly recognized as a core component of contemporary health profession education, interprofessional learning outcomes remain difficult to define and assess across disciplines. The aim of this study was to identify a single set of interprofessional learning competency statements with relevance to all health professions.

Methods and results: Six national and international interprofessional competency frameworks were reviewed and combined to give a total of 165 competency statements. Following a process of mapping and grouping these statements into common content areas, duplicate content was removed. In addition, content deemed as a core competency for one or more individual health professions was removed. A round table of experts reviewed the remaining statements and agreed a final set of eight. Each statement was expressed as a specific learning outcome that could be assessed and which described behaviors and practices that students could routinely expect to engage with, and participate in, during the course of their study.

Conclusion: Identifying specific interprofessional competencies that students of all health professions require will enable more effective implementation of interprofessional learning activities and assessment within the core curriculum.  相似文献

Background: Ambiguity in understanding what “professionalism” means, and uncertainty in how best to teach it, remains. This study aimed to explore experiences of senior faculty in their endeavor to develop and include professionalism within a curriculum reform (CR), and illuminate challenges encountered.

Methods: Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from interviews with faculty who were involved in a major CR, plus archived document analysis to provide context, and aid triangulation. Data coding and analysis were inductive, using thematic analysis to generate initial coding scheme; exploring themes in the data.

Results: Seventeen interviews were undertaken and approximately 90 documents were reviewed. Analysis revealed: faculty may unintentionally influence, through mixed messages and hidden meanings, the content and processes of professionalism teaching and learning. We identified several intersecting tensions related to the nature of the existing curriculum, staff knowledge, resources, and lack of clear guidance about the “what and how” to teach professionalism.

Conclusion: This study illustrates, hidden messages and contextual factors can enable or inhibit the translation of professionalism into curricula. Those involved in implementing professionalism must be reflective, keep the “hidden curriculum” in the spotlight to consider how presuppositions and prejudices of their cultural milieu may shape curricular outcomes.  相似文献

Background: The University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine implemented a curriculum change that included reduction of lectures, incorporation of problem-based learning and other small group activities. Six academic communities were introduced for teaching longitudinal curricular content and organizing extracurricular activities.

Methods: Surveys were collected from 904 first- and second-year medical students over 6 years. Student satisfaction data with their sense of connectedness and community support were collected before and after the implementation of the new curriculum. In a follow-up survey, medical students rated factors that contributed to their sense of connectedness with faculty and students (n?=?134).

Results: Students’ perception of connectedness to faculty significantly increased following implementation of a curriculum change that included academic communities. Students ranked small group clinical skills activities within academic communities significantly higher than other activities concerning their sense of connectedness with faculty. Students’ perception of connectedness among each other was high at baseline and did not significantly change. Small group activities scored higher than extracurricular activities regarding students’ connectedness among themselves.

Conclusions: The implementation of a new curriculum with more small group educational activities including academic communities enhanced connectedness between students and faculty and resulted in an increased sense of community.  相似文献

Most of professional ethics is grounded on the assumption that we can speak meaningfully about particular, insulated professions with aims and goals, that conceptually there exists a clear "inside and outside" to any given profession. Professional ethics has also inherited the two-part assumption from mainstream moral philosophy that we can speak meaningfully about agent-relative versus agent-neutral moral perspectives, and further, that it is only from the agent-neutral perspective that we can truly evaluate our professional moral aims, rules, and practices. Several important changes that have occurred, or are currently taking place, in the structure of the health care professions, challenge those assumptions and signal the need for teachers of professional ethics to rethink the content of what we teach as well as our teaching methods. The changes include: influences and critique from other professions and from those who are served by the health professions, and influences and critique from professionals themselves, including increased activism and dissent from within the professions. The discussion focuses on changes that have occurred in the health-related fields, but insofar as similar changes are occurring in other professions such as law and business, these arguments will have broader conceptual implications for the way we ought to think about professional ethics more generally.  相似文献

Abstract

Background: Anatomy instructors adopt individual teaching methods and strategies to convey anatomical information to medical students for learning. Students also exhibit their own individual learning preferences. Instructional methods preferences vary between both instructors and students across different institutions.

Aims: In attempt to bridge the gap between teaching methods and the students’ learning preferences, this study aimed to identify students’ learning methods and different strategies of studying anatomy in two different Saudi medical schools in Riyadh.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study, conducted in Saudi Arabia in April 2015, utilized a three-section questionnaire, which was distributed to a consecutive sample of 883 medical students to explore their methods and strategies in learning and teaching anatomy in two separate institutions in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Results: Medical students’ learning styles and preferences were found to be predominantly affected by different cultural backgrounds, gender, and level of study. Many students found it easier to understand and remember anatomy components using study aids. In addition, almost half of the students felt confident to ask their teachers questions after class. The study also showed that more than half of the students found it easier to study by concentrating on a particular part of the body rather than systems. Students’ methods of learning were distributed equally between memorizing facts and learning by hands-on dissection. In addition, the study showed that two thirds of the students felt satisfied with their learning method and believed it was well suited for anatomy.

Conclusions: There is no single teaching method which proves beneficial; instructors should be flexible in their teaching in order to optimize students’ academic achievements.  相似文献

The authors of this perspective contribution have served two terms (2014 and 2016) in the Jury of the biennial Best PhD Dissertation Award committee of the Netherlands Association for Medical Education. During this period, the committee reviewed 32 dissertations. Based on discussions among the jury regarding elements of an award winning dissertation and existing literature, we propose seven criteria to evaluate PhD dissertations: size, breadth of research skills exhibited, coherence of studies, relevance to field, validity, style, communicative power and ethics, and impact of the work. We anticipate these may not only assist similar committees but also provide criteria of excellence for future doctoral work in health professions education.  相似文献
