Investigation for malnutrition, carried out in Peruvian Amazonia, showed 16.4% of malnutrition among 98 children of the Indian Cashibo tribe. This rate is 4 times higher the rate recorded in an indian Brazilian tribe, which is protected and living aside the americano-latin civilization. Some aspects of the acculturation are discussed to explain such a difference.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study of 593 students (277 boys, 316 girls) 8–15 years of age was done to evaluate the physical fitness (PF) of children and adolescents from Maputo, Mozambique, relative to socioeconomic status (SES) and physical activity (PA). PF was assessed by a battery of field tests including the sit and reach, sit-ups, hand grip strength, a 10 × 5 meters shuttle run, and two distance runs, 1,600 and 2,400 meters. PA was estimated with a questionnaire designed for this population. Students were divided into three groups according to region of residence, which was used as the criterion of SES. PA was more intense among underprivileged students due to domestic activities and walking time per day. PF significantly differed among SES groups. Poor students exhibited significantly better results on the sit and reach and endurance runs, while privileged children performed better on sit-ups and the shuttle run. There were no differences in grip strength. Comparison with North American reference data suggests that Mozambican youth have greater flexibility and cardiorespiratory endurance, but less absolute strength and power. The results suggest that SES is an important determinant of fitness in Mozambique, especially because of its influence on body size, composition, and on PA. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between physical activity and somatic growth with motor skill and physical fitness in prepubertal girls. The subjects were 215, 7–10-year-old girls. Somatic characteristics included 15 dimensions. Physical fitness was assessed by the EUROFIT battery of 9 tests. Motor skill development was based on quantitative and qualitative assessment of the overhand throw. Physical activity was assessed by parental seven-day physical activity recall for the child. Sum of five skinfolds was significantly negatively related with motor fitness after controlling for the effects of physical activity (r = −0.27 to −0.39). Somatic characteristics were not significantly related with fitness items and throwing stage after controlling for physical activity. Age-specific partial correlations between physical activity, fitness items, quantitative, and qualitative characteristics of the overhand throw, were not significant. After controlling for body size and subcutaneous fatness, aerobic fitness was significantly related with physical activity of moderate to high intensity. Am. J. Hum. The aims of this study were to examine: (1) the association between sociodemographic and lifestyle factors and sleep quality in a population-based cohort of Australian women and (2) possible influence of reproductive status and mental and physical health factors on these associations. Data on 3,655 women (mean age = 46.6 years, range 34.3-67.4) were obtained from the Mater Hospital University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy for this cross-sectional study. Self-rated sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. For the purpose of this study, two cutoff points (scores 5 and 10) were used to divide women into three categories: normal (65.2%), moderately poor (26.4%), and very poor sleep quality (8.5%). Other covariates were measured at 21-year follow-up as well. After adjusting for reproductive status, mental and physical health, there were significant associations between moderately poor sleep quality and education and between very poor sleep quality and unemployment, both measures of socioeconomic status. In addition, work-related exertion was associated with increased rates of moderately poor sleep quality, whereas those women undertaking moderate exercise were less likely to experience very poor sleep quality. Independent associations between sociodemographic factors and exercise with moderately poor and very poor sleep quality were identified. These findings demonstrate the dynamic nature of the association between exercise/exertion, socioeconomic status, and sleep quality and highlight the importance of taking these into consideration when dealing with issues of poor sleep quality in women.  相似文献

This 12-month prospective controlled intervention evaluated the effect of a general school based physical activity program on muscle strength, physical performance and body composition in prepubertal girls. Fifty-three girls aged 7–9 years involved in a school based exercise program [40 min/day of general physical activity per school day (200 min/week)] were compared with 50 age-matched girls who participated in the general Swedish physical education curriculum (mean 60 min/week). Body composition (DXA), isokinetic peak torque (PT) of the knee extensors and flexors at 60 and 180°/s, and vertical jump height (VJH) were assessed at baseline and 12 months. The annual gain in weight was similar between the groups, but there was a greater increase in total body and regional lean mass (P < 0.05) and fat mass (P < 0.01) in the exercise group. Mean gains in knee extensor PT at 60 and 180°/s were 7.0–7.6% greater in the exercise group (P ranging <0.05–<0.001). No significant differences were detected in VJH. In conclusion, increasing school based physical education to at least 3 h/week provides a feasible strategy to enhance the development of muscle strength and lean mass in prepubertal girls.  相似文献

PurposeTo examine effects of race and predictors of socioeconomic status (SES) on nutrient-based diet quality and their contribution to health disparities in an urban population of low SES.DesignData were analyzed from a sample of the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Across the Life Span (HANDLS) Study participants examining effects of age, sex, race, income, poverty income ratio, education, employment, and smoking status on nutrient-based diet quality as measured by a micronutrient composite index of nutrient adequacy ratios and a mean adequacy ratio. Regression models were used to examine associations and t tests were used to look at racial differences.SubjectsAfrican American and white adults ages 30 to 64 years residing in 12 predefined census tracts in Baltimore, Maryland.ResultsSex, age, education, poverty income ratio, and income were statistically significant predictors of diet quality for African Americans, while sex, education, and smoking status were statistically significant for whites. African Americans had lower mean adequacy ratio scores than whites (76.4 vs 79.1). Whites had significantly higher nutrient adequacy ratios scores for thiamin, riboflavin, folate, B12, vitamins A and E, magnesium, copper, zinc, and calcium, while African Americans had higher vitamin C scores.ConclusionEducation significantly impacted diet quality in the HANDLS sample, but race cannot be discounted. Whether the racial differences in diet quality are indicative of cultural differences in food preferences, selection, preparation, and availability, or disparities in socioeconomic status remains unclear.  相似文献

Growth faltering has been well documented in children from Papua New Guinea, although there is evidence that broad processes of modernization, such as cash cropping, have resulted in increased body size. It is not clear, however, what household socioeconomic factors may be associated with larger body size in populations undergoing early stages of modernization. This cross‐sectional study examined the nutritional status of children between birth and 5 years of age living near Kanabea, Papua New Guinea, a relatively remote outpost in the highland fringe experiencing a limited cash economy. Weight and height were measured on 260 children from 190 households. The mean z‐scores of ?2.26 ± 1.50 (SD) for height‐for‐age, ?2.43 ± 1.25 for weight‐for‐age, and ?1.34 ± 1.49 for weight‐for‐height are suggestive of both acute and chronic malnutrition. Using a cut‐off value of ≤ ?2SD, 68.8% of the children were stunted and/or wasted. These values are similar to those from a 1992–93 survey in the district, revealing that malnutrition remains a problem in the area. In this largely traditional horticultural group, educated mothers and mothers who spoke pidgin and/or English in addition to the local language had children with better z‐scores. Am. J. Hum. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of the home environment, socioeconomic status (SES), and health status on cognitive functioning in a sample of children with HIV-1 infection in a cross-sectional study. METHODS: Forty-three caregivers and their children (2.5 to 12 years) participated. Caregivers completed two self-report measures of the home environment that included questions regarding the organization of the environment, play materials, parental involvement, variety of stimulation, and parental attitudes toward the provision of a cognitively stimulating environment. Cognitive functioning was assessed using a standardized intelligence (IQ) test. Children's medical charts were reviewed for HIV-1 classification status (CDC, 1994), CD4 cell counts, and current medication. RESULTS: This study revealed two primary findings. First, measures of the home environment mediated the association between SES and child IQ. Second, measures of the home environment had a stronger association with child IQ during the advanced stages of disease than earlier stages of disease. CONCLUSIONS: The home environment is associated with cognitive functioning among children with HIV-1 infection. Moreover, interventions aimed at enhancing the quality of the home environment may have a positive impact on these children's cognitive development.  相似文献

The national preparation amixine induces interferon (IF) production in most of the people who have background values of serum IF. When the initial values of serum IF are high, after administration of amixine they decline to the background ones. A certain group of subjects (approximately 25%) is not sensitive to amixine. The IF content in the blood serum of such subjects does not change before or after administration of amixine. Its use should be limited to 4-5 administrations weekly, because its longer use leads to the exhaustion of the IF system in people.  相似文献

We have previously observed that 11-year-old children of low socio-economic status (LSES) showed a delayed physical growth of approximately 2 years and developed lower normalized short-term power output than children of high socio-economic status (HSES) of the same age. In contrast, maximal oxygen uptake per unit of fat free mass was no different in either group. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of anthropometric characteristics between HSES and LSES prepubertal children in aerobic and anaerobic performance. To compare children of the same body dimensions, 11-year-old boys (n = 30) and girls (n = 31) of LSES and 9-year-old boys (n = 21) and girls (n = 27) of HSES were studied. Anthropometric measurements, (direct test), maximal anaerobic power (P max, force-velocity test) and mean anaerobic power ( , Wingate test) were determined. In these children having the same body dimensions: mean were the same in LSES and HSES children [1.2 (SD 0.2)1-min–1];P max and were lower in LSES subjects [154.0 (SD 33.2) vs 174.6 (SD 38.4) W and 116.3 (SD 23.3) vs 128.2 (SD 28.0) W, respectively]; the linear relationships between and fat free mass were the same in LSES and HSES boys but, in the girls, the LSES group had lower values. For anaerobic performance, the relationships were significantly different: the slopes were the same but LSES values for the both sexes were lower. These results would suggest that factors other than differences in body dimensions alone were responsible for the lower performance of LSES girls and boys. Cultural factors and motor learning, structural and functional alterations of muscle induced by marginal malnutrition have been discussed.  相似文献

Little is known about the frequency-intensity patterns of naturally occurring physical activity in children. A data set obtained previously by direct observation of physical activity in 8 girls and 7 boys (all prepubertal, ages 6–10) was analyzed with spectral analysis to detect significant frequency-intensity relationships. Pulse detection algorithms were used to characterize the number of exercise bouts, their duration and relative intensity. Spectral analysis revealed that physical activity bouts were frequent, pulsatile, and random with no significant frequencies detected during many 24-min periods of observation. An average of 83 ± 11 bouts per hour were observed in boys and 89 ± 12 bouts per hour in girls, and the mean duration of an exercise bout was 21 ± 5 sec for boys and 20 ± 4 sec for girls (NS). While high-intensity exercise bouts comprised less than 20% of the time spent in physical activity, duration of high intensity exercise bouts tended to be longer and accounted for about 40% of the energy expenditure associated with physical activity. Spontaneous physical activity in prepubertal children is characterized by frequent bouts of brief, mostly low intensity exercise, randomly interspersed with less frequent, but metabolically substantial high intensity bouts. These findings are potentially useful in assessing the impact of disease on quality of life in children, investigating the relationship between physical activity and mechanisms of growth and development, and creating new approaches for in-laboratory exercise testing in children. PurposeHelicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is one of the causes of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer and MALT-lymphoma. The frequency of H. pylori infection is different in various regions of the world and dependent on age, socioeconomic and hygiene status. The objective of this study was to assess seroprevalence and the associated socioeconomic and sociodemographic characteristics influencing H. pylori infection in children and adults in Polish population.Material/methodsIn multicenter epidemiological studies, H. pylori infection occurrence was assessed in Poland in the years 2002 and 2003. The seroprevalence of H. pylori infection diagnosis was based on IgG anti-H. pylori antibodies concentration above 24 UI/ml, which was measured using ELISA test. The study included 6565 subjects: 3307 adults (50.37%) and 3258 children (49.63%).ResultsPositive result was observed in 3827 subjects (58.29%), i.e. 1043 children (32.01%) and 2784 adults (84.19%). H. pylori infection prevalence was greater in children of poor economic status, who were born in a rural area, lived in crowded houses with no running tap water and with toilet outside the house, and who did not observe hygiene rules. In adults, the factors predisposing to higher probability of being H. pylori infected included: being born in a rural area, having low family income and elementary education, smoking tobacco, drinking high proof alcohols as well as not observing of hygiene rules.ConclusionsImprovement of socioeconomic status, sanitary and hygienic conditions and the education of the society might decrease H. pylori infection prevalence in children and in adults.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The relationship between activity levels and body fat in children is unclear, despite a large number of studies. The issue is clouded by the wide variety of methods used to assess children's activity levels. It is important to assess whether the type of activity measure influences the fatness-activity relationship. This is a first step to uncovering the role of modifying variables such as gender, age, maturity, etc. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: This study uses meta-analytic procedures to synthesize the results of such studies and to assess whether the type of activity measure used has an effect on the strength of the relationship observed. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Fifty studies were located that satisfied the inclusion criteria. Seventy-eight per cent of the studies showed a negative relationship, 18% no relationship and 4% a positive relationship between physical activity and body fatness. Data were analysed using the meta-analytic procedures described by Rosenthal (Meta-analytic Procedures for Social Research, Sage, 1991). MAIN OUTCOMES AND RESULTS: The mean effect size indicated a small to moderate, inverse relationship (r = -0.16). Mean effect sizes differed significantly (F(3,52) = 8.04, p < 0.001) according to the activity measure used: questionnaire, r = -0.14; motion counters, r = -0.18; observation, r = -0.39; heart rate (HR), r = 0.00. Observation measures elicited a significantly stronger relationship with body fat than did questionnaire or heart rate measures (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference between the effect sizes elicited by observation and motion counters. Correlational analyses revealed no effect of age group or gender on the strength of the relationship between fatness and activity. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests there is a small to moderate relationship between body fat and activity in children. It is important to note, however, that the size of the relationship depends on the activity measure used. It is therefore recommended that direct measures of movement, such as observation or motion counter methods, are used to assess the relationship of activity levels with health.  相似文献

The Preece-Baines model I function, adapted for use with a personal computer, is applied to the longitudinal growth records of Guatemalan children and adolescents of high socioeconomic status. The fit of the Preece-Baines function to the Guatemalan data is compared with those of published analyses of the function fitted to the growth of British, Belgian, urban and rural Indian, Australian Aborigine, and African children. Guatemalan, British, and Belgian samples share generally favorable environments for human development and show few differences in the amount and velocity of growth, or in the timing of growth events. Urban Indians live under relatively good environmental conditions and are similar to Guatemalans in the timing of growth events, but grow more slowly and grow less than the Guatemalans, British, or Belgians. Rural Indian, Australian, and African samples live in environments that delay or retard growth, and these last-named three samples grow more slowly, delay the onset of the adolescent growth spurt, and achieve smaller adult height than the Guatemalans. Parameters of the Preece-Baines model are compared between all samples and show that there are several alternate paths in the rate of growth and the timing of adolescent growth events that may be taken from childhood to adulthood.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The decline in physical activity levels of young children seems to be combined with a high prevalence of obesity and overweight and a reduction in the participation in organized sport. With the ever-increasing interest in exploring the relationship between physical activity and obesity amongst children, it is important to provide a more precise estimate of both physical activity and body fatness. A significant proportion of previous research on this topic has relied on self-report methods to assess physical activity and body mass index as a proxy for actual body fatness. There is a need to investigate the relationships between physical activity and fatness in children using objective methods. AIM: This study was conducted in order to explore the relationship between physical activity patterns and percentage body fat amongst a group of primary school children. Subjects and methods: Forty-seven primary school children (boys, n = 23; girls, n = 24) participated in this study. They were randomly selected from children in years 5 and 6 (9-11 year olds) of four schools drawn from the same catchment area in the city of Birmingham, UK. The frequency, intensity and duration of physical activity were determined using continuous heart rate monitoring from 8:30 am to 8:30pm over three separate days (two weekdays and one weekend day). Percentage body fat was assessed using air displacement plethysmography. RESULTS: Results indicated that 52% of children did not achieve a single 15-min bout of sustained moderate physical activity over the three days of monitoring. Independent t-tests revealed that girls were significantly fatter (t44 = -3.126, p=0.003) than boys. There was no significant difference (t45 = 0.225, p > 0.05) between boys and girls in accumulated time spent with heart rates above the moderate physical activity threshold. Pearson's product moment correlation coefficients revealed no significant (r= -0.017, p> 0.05) relationship between per cent body fat and average daily time spent in moderate and vigorous activity. CONCLUSION: Despite the prediction to the contrary, there was no evidence of a significant relationship between percentage body fat of children and time spent in moderate and vigorous activity. Additionally, while there were no significant gender differences in physical activity patterns, children were more physically active during weekdays than weekends.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if participants in a summer camp met physical activity guidelines and to examine whether physical activity levels differed by gender, race, socio‐economic status, or weight status. Height, weight, demographic information, and accelerometer‐measured physical activity were obtained from 132 participants aged 6–12 years at 6 day camps. Participants engaged in an average of 57.7 min (SD  = 26.54) of moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity during the 8 hr of camp. Almost 40% (39.8%) of the campers met the physical activity guidelines of at least 60 min of moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity during the camp day, but there were gender and weight status differences. Results of an ANOVA analysis indicated that boys were more active than girls and normal weight children were more active than obese children. Summer day camp attendance appears to provide many children with an opportunity to attain recommended levels of physical activity, but differs by gender and weight status.  相似文献
