Travel risk assessment and risk management

Risk assessment and risk management are fundamental to travel health consultations. Undertaking a comprehensive risk assessment involves gathering information on the traveller and their proposed journey. This information, as well as identifying specific travel-related hazards, should ensure risk-management advice and strategies are appropriate for individuals. This article outlines the principles of risk assessment and risk management in the context of travel health consultations.

Calculating risk

A risk prediction model has been developed to assess an individual patient's absolute risk of venous thromboembolism up to five years in the future. Community nurses are being encouraged to use it to educate patients.     

Assess health risk status for intervention and risk reduction

This article describes the theoretically based Family Focused Health Risk Assessment (FFHRA), which can be used to systematically identify behavior patterns in individuals and populations, identify stages of change for health risk behaviors, target interventions based on those stages, and increase positive change in patients' behavior patterns, ultimately improving the health of individual patients and the general population.     

高危人群压疮评估表临床应用

压疮是身体局部组织长期受压、血液循环障碍、组织营养缺乏致使皮肤失去正常功能,而引起的组织破损和坏死。一旦发生压疮,不仅增加患者的痛苦和经济负担,而且加重病情,应用压疮危险因素评估量表（risk assessment scale,RAS）是预防压疮的重要措施,最常用的是Braden量表、Norton量表、Waterlow量表3种。美国的压疮预防指南推荐应用Braden量表和Norton量表,尤其是Braden量表被认为是较理想的压疮评估量表。我院自2008年3月起,应用根据Braden量表的内容和评分标准设计的高危人群压疮评估／报告表,经过临床应用,取得了明显的效果,现报道如下。     

Maternal-fetal risk assessment

In first-world countries, maternal and infant mortality has significantly decreased over the past 50 years due to factors such as skilled pregnancy care practitioners, aseptic hospital births, antibiotics, safe blood transfusions, and oxytocin. However, international maternal and infant mortality statistics from underdeveloped countries remain high. Pregnancy risk management requires implementation of risk-reduction strategies that have been proven to be effective. Marked physiological alterations in biochemical indices that occur in pregnancy require that laboratories participating in the evaluation of new interventions in pregnancy must ensure that tests are compared to appropriate gestation-specific reference intervals.
