Somatosensory processing of duration and frequency changes was investigated using event-related potentials to vibrotactile stimuli. Intermittent vibration to the fingertips of either hand was presented using a two-stimulus odd-ball paradigm (deviant P = 0.10). One group (N = 12, 18–38 years) was presented with stimulus pairs of 20/70, 50/150 and 170/250 ms. A second group (N = 10, 19–34 years) was tested using frequency pairs of 200/70 Hz. A psychophysical study examined the subjects’ ability to discriminate between different stimulus pairs. A clear negative shift in the response to the deviant stimulus was recorded with all the stimulus conditions used in both experiments. Both frequency changes and duration increments/decrements revealed an initial negativity in the subtraction waveform with a mean onset of 90–170 ms and a following positivity, both of which were dependent on the duration of the stimulus used. A significant decrease in the amplitude of both components was observed with the 170/250 ms pairing, coinciding with a positive correlation between individual discrimination performance and amplitude. These results support the existence of a somatosensory mismatch response with features similar to those of the aMMN and highlight the relevance of the somatosensory-specific positivity. Results from the duration experiment also resolve some of the discrepancies between previous studies.  相似文献

Analyses of neural mechanisms of duration processing are essential for the understanding of psychological phenomena which evolve in time. Different mechanisms are presumably responsible for the processing of shorter (below 500 ms) and longer (above 500 ms) events but have not yet been a subject of an investigation with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In the present study, we show a greater involvement of several brain regions – including right-hemispheric midline structures and left-hemispheric lateral regions – in the processing of visual stimuli of shorter as compared to longer duration. We propose a greater involvement of lower-level cognitive mechanisms in the processing of shorter events as opposed to higher-level mechanisms of cognitive control involved in longer events.  相似文献

Eye fixation duration during discrimination of pairs of simultaneously presented computer generated random textures differing in 'grain' has been analyzed. Of the shortest duration are fixation periods preceded and followed by local saccades over the same texture and those preceded by local saccade and followed by crossing saccade shifting the eye to the other texture. The longest were fixation periods preceded and followed by crossing saccades. Small difference in 'grain' of both textures was combined by a higher number of crossing saccades between them. The approximate duration of some neural operations taking part in the visual cognitive task studied was hypothesized on the basis of comparing the duration of different types of eye fixation periods.  相似文献

Methamphetamine (MA) toxicity in aggregated mice was studied by varying the number of mice and the proportion of MA treated mice kept in the same confined space. The lethality was measured 24 h after intraperitoneal injections of MA at doses ranging from 10 to 100 mg/kg. MA lethality, over a wide dose range (15 to 50 mg/kg), was higher in aggregated mice than in those maintained in isolation. The greater the proportion of MA-treated mice in aggregation was, the higher the MA lethality was. In aggregations of 10 mice, MA was lethal at lower doses than in aggregations of 5 mice. These results indicate that the lethality of MA is influenced by confinement and aggregation.  相似文献

Twenty-five Sprague-Dawley derived rats were administered 1.0, 3.0 or 5.0 mg/kg of methamphetamine HC1 or saline twice daily throughout gestation beginning on Day 1 of pregnancy. Rats were allowed to deliver normally; offspring were culled to 8 and sexed on Day 7, and weaned on Day 21. All females had viable litters except at the 5.0 mg/kg dose where 4 of 7 failed to deliver. The rats given methamphetamine delivered earlier than did controls. Weight gain over gestation decreased as a function of increasing drug dose. No gross anomalies were visible in the offspring. Litter size decreased as a function of increased dose and eye opening was delayed in the drug groups; the 5.0 mg/kg offspring made more conditioned avoidance responses than did the 3.0 mg/kg and saline offspring.  相似文献

To clarify the roles of the basal ganglia in time perception, single-unit activity was recorded from both sides of the striatum of a monkey performing a duration discrimination task. In the task, two visual cues were presented successively in different durations (0.2∼1.6 s). Each cue presentation was followed by a 1-s delay period. The subject was instructed to choose a longer presented cue after the second delay period. There were two types of trials for sequence of cue duration, the long-short (LS) trials in which the first cue (C1) was longer than the second cue (C2) and the short-long (SL) trials in which the C1 was shorter than the C2. Striatal neurons phasically responded during the first delay (D1) and second delay (D2) periods. Responses during the D1 period changed depending on C1 duration. Activity of populations of D1-response neurons correlated with C1 duration positively or negatively. Responses during the D2 period differed between the LS and SL trials. Activity of population of D2-response neurons also changed depending on C2 duration. But the dependence on C2 duration was affected by the trial type, that is, whether the C2 was longer or shorter compared to the C1.These findings suggest that striatal neurons could encode cue durations with monotonically changing responses in the D1 period and discrimination results between the two cue durations in the D2 period.  相似文献

The effects of methamphetamine (MAP) administration on neurotensin-like immunoreactivity (NTLI) were investigated in the rat brain. A single administration of MAP induced dose-dependent and reversible increases in NTLI in the caudate-putamen, limbic forebrain and midbrain. NTLI in the caudate-putamen, limbic forebrain and midbrain was also enhanced after repeated administration of MAP. It was assumed that MAP enhanced NTLI in the caudate-putamem, limbic forebrain and midbrain through its action upon the nigrostriatal and mesolimbic dopamine systems.  相似文献

The ability to detect low electrical currents presented to the lingual surface is widely used to assess taste function in humans. Despite this fact, the influence of stimulus duration on electrical taste thresholds is not well established. In this study, we evaluated the effects of current duration (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 s) on electrogustometric detection thresholds for two regions of the anterior tongue in 24 college students. Anodal stimulation was produced using a stainless steel 12.5-mm(2) electrode, and thresholds were determined using a single-staircase procedure. A non-monotonic function for the threshold values was observed for both tongue regions across the stimulus durations, with the 1.0-s duration stimulus resulting in a lower threshold value (i.e., higher sensitivity) than either the 0.5- or 1.5-s durations, which did not differ in magnitude from one another. These data suggest that stimulus-duration-related enhancement of lingual detection threshold sensitivity to electric currents disappears at some point after 1 s.  相似文献

The integration of visual and auditory inputs in the human brain occurs only if the components are perceived in temporal proximity, that is, when the intermodal time difference falls within the so-called subjective synchrony range. We used the midpoint of this range to estimate the point of subjective simultaneity (PSS). We measured the PSS for audio-visual (AV) stimuli in a synchrony judgment task, in which subjects had to judge a given AV stimulus using three response categories (audio first, synchronous, video first). The relevant stimulus manipulation was the duration of the auditory and visual components. Results for unimodal auditory and visual stimuli have shown that the perceived onset shifts to relatively later positions with increasing stimulus duration. These unimodal shifts should be reflected in changing PSS values, when AV stimuli with different durations of the auditory and visual components are used. The results for 17 subjects showed indeed a significant shift of the PSS for different duration combinations of the stimulus components. Because the shifts were approximately equal for duration changes in either of the components, no net shift of the PSS was observed as long as the durations of the two components were equal. This result indicates the need to appropriately account for unimodal timing effects when quantifying intermodal synchrony perception.  相似文献

The behavior of five groups of rats (seven rats per group) made hypothyroid for varying lengths of time and one group of seven normal control rats was assessed under forced alternation fixed-ratio (FR1, FR3, FR5 and FR10), alternating lever cyclic-ratio (ALCR) and progressive-ratio (PR3) schedules of reinforcement. Hypothyroidism was produced by adding methimazole (MMI) to the drinking water of pregnant dams from embryonic day E16 to postnatal day P25. Four groups were given replacement thyroxine (T4) injections beginning at specific time points (P1, P7, P13, and P19). There were no differences in behavioral performance between control and experimental groups under the FR schedule, which indicates that the animals' sensorimotor abilities were intact. Under the forced ALCR schedule, all groups reached criteria similarly. However, under the choice lever ALCR schedule, control animals and those which received T4 replacement from early on (P1, P7, P13 groups) performed well and all had reached criteria by 11 sessions. In contrast, animals which did not receive any T4 replacement or received it late (P19 group) took longer to reach criteria and 5/14 animals had not reached criteria at all by 20 sessions. This deterioration in performance was paralleled by an increase in perseverative behavior as evidenced by an increased frequency of pressing the wrong lever when alternation of lever was required. This suggests that congenital hypothyroidism results in increased perseveration leading to a decrease in learning when a discrimination between correct and incorrect operanda is made available.  相似文献

Rats with septal lesions and control rats were required to press the center lever of a three lever operant chamber a fixed number of times before activating the side levers. If the rat pressed the center lever 32 times, then a response on the right lever was correct and food was delivered. If the rat pressed 2, 4, 8, or 16 times on the center lever, then a response on the left lever was correct. Both groups were able to discriminate between long and short fixed-ratio schedules. As expected, more errors were made as the discrimination became more difficult. Septal rats, however, were unable to discriminate as well as control rats. These data suggest that septal lesions interfere with rats' ability to monitor response-produced proprioceptive stimuli.  相似文献

Effects of repeated administration of methamphetamine (MAP) on a component of the cortical event-related potential (ERP), P3-like potential which corresponds to the human P3b, were examined in rats performing an active discrimination task. Rats were trained to press a bar within 1200 ms after cessation of a target tone (1000 Hz) lasting for 800 ms, and to withhold an overt response to the standard tone (2000 Hz). The rats were given intracranial electrical stimulation to the medial forebrain bundle as a reward, only when they correctly responded to the target tone. ERPs before drug administration were recorded after the correct response ratio exceeded 85%. Thereafter, a daily dose of 4 mg/kg of MAP, or the same volume of saline in another group, was administered intraperitoneally 15 times. ERPs were recorded again 7-10 days after the last injection. In the rats which received MAP the amplitude of the P3-like potential decreased with no change in its latency, while the response latency of bar-pressing and the correct response ratio were not altered significantly. These results suggest some changes in catecholaminergic transmission induced by repeated MAP-administration affect a P3 generation mechanism. MAP-treated rats may be useful as an animal model to investigate neural mechanisms of MAP-psychosis and schizophrenia.  相似文献

Effects of timing of shifts on sleepiness and sleep duration   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
SUMMARY  This review summarizes the effects on sleep duration and sleepiness of (1) the timing of shifts (start and finishing times) and (2) the scheduling of free time between shifts. The results from the few studies available show that sleep duration is clearly determined by the change over time between the night and the morning shift—no more than 5 or 6 hours of sleep is obtained before the morning shift if the shift starts at 06.00 hours or earlier. Therefore, it is suggested that the morning shift should not start before 07.00 hours. A late start of the morning shift will however, increase the sleepiness at the end of the night shift, as well as decrease the duration of the daysleep after the night shift. On the other hand, one may argue that the short daysleep after a night shift may be compensated for by an evening nap, whereas a short night sleep before a morning shift cannot (no time for nap). The review of studies concerning free time between shifts suggests that at least 16 hours is needed and that quick change-overs should be avoided. The free time after a spell of night shifts should be at least 48 hours since the shiftworker needs two main sleep episodes to recover from night work.  相似文献

Summary The inferotemporal cortex of primates plays a prominent role in the learning and retention of visual form discriminations. In this experiment we investigated the role of inferotemporal (IT) cortex in the discrimination of two-dimensional forms defined by motion cues. Six monkeys were trained to a criterion level of performance on two form-from-motion problems. Three of these animals received complete bilateral lesions of IT cortex, while the other three served as unoperated controls. All animals were then retrained to criterion to evaluate the effects of IT lesions on the retention of form-from-motion learning. Compared with the control group, the lesion group was significantly impaired on both problems. Following retention testing, we trained both groups of monkeys on two new form-from-motion problems to investigate the effects of IT lesions on acquisition rates for new learning. The lesion group performed well on the new problems; the learning rates of the operated and control groups were not significantly different. When forms were defined by luminance cues, monkeys with IT lesions, like those in previous studies, were impaired both for retention and for acquisition. These findings indicate that the anterograde effects of IT lesions on learning new form discriminations are less severe for forms defined by motion cues than for forms defined by luminance cues. However, the retrograde effects of IT lesions on retention are severe for forms defined by either cue.  相似文献

The present study aimed to assess the effects of aging and awareness on conditional discrimination learning within an eyeblink conditioning procedure by using a consecutive age-groups design (20-35 years, 36-50 years, 51-65 years, 66-80 years). Increasing age was associated with a decline in overall eyeblink conditioned response (CR) frequency and a deficit in conditional discrimination learning in the 2 older groups. Awareness of stimulus contingencies affected discrimination performance but not overall CR rates in younger subjects. Older subjects did not achieve eyeblink conditional discrimination learning, regardless of awareness. Discrimination performance correlated with measures of declarative memory. The pattern of results is discussed with respect to the involvement of hippocampal-cerebellar interactions and awareness in the mediation of age-related conditioning changes.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained on a conditional spatial discrimination with a three-key operant chamber. The position of the correct key was left when all the keys were red, center when all the keys were green, and right when all the keys were white. Pigeons with hippocampal damages could learn the task, as well as intact birds and those that received hippocampal lesions after acquisition of the task. These results suggest that the pigeon hippocampus does not play a role in conditional spatial discrimination.  相似文献
