The anterior portion of rodent agranular insular cortex consists of a ventral periallocortical region (AIv) and a dorsal proisocortical region (AId). Each of these two cortical areas has distinct efferent connections, but in certain brain areas their projection fields are partially or wholly overlapping. Bilateral projections to layers I, III and VI of medial frontal cortex originate in the dorsal agranular insular cortex and terminate in the prelimbic, anterior cingulate and medial precentral areas; those originating in ventral agranular insular cortex terminate in the medial orbital, infralimbic and prelimbic areas. The dorsal and ventral regions of the agranular insular cortex project topographically to the ipsilateral cortex bordering the rhinal fissure, which includes the posterior primary olfactory, posterior agranular insular, perirhinal and lateral entorhinal areas. Fibers to these lateral cortical areas were found to travel in a cell-free zone, between cortical layer VI and the claustrum, which corresponds to the extreme capsule. The dorsal and ventral regions send commissural projections to layer I, lamina dissecans and outer layer V, and layer VI of the contralateral homotopical cortex, via the corpus callosum. Projections from the ventral and dorsal regions of the agranular insular cortex to the caudatoputamen are topographically arranged and terminate in finger-like patches. The ventral, but not the dorsal region, projects to the ventral striatum and ventral pallidum. The thalamic projections of the ventral and dorsal regions are largely overlapping, with projections from both to the ipsilateral reticular nucleus and bilaterally to the rhomboid, mediodorsal, gelatinosus and ventromedial nuclei. The heaviest projection is that to the full anteroposterior extent of the medial segment of the mediodorsal nucleus. Brainstem areas receiving projections from the ventral and dorsal regions include the lateral hypothalamus, substantia nigra pars compacta, ventral tegmental area and dorsal raphe nucleus. In addition, the ventral region projects to the periaqueductal gray and the dorsal region projects to the parabrachial and ventral pontine nuclei. These efferent connections largely reciprocate the afferent connections of the ventral and dorsal agranular insular cortex, and provide further support for the concept that these regions are portions of an outer ring of limbic cortex which plays a critical role in the expression of motivated, species-typical behaviors.  相似文献

Summary The spatial organization and laminar distribution of projections from the olfactory bulb and the anterior (PPCa) and posterior (PPCp) divisions of the prepiriform cortex to the entorhinal cortex were studied with anterograde (3H-leucine) and retrograde (WGA-HRP) tracing techniques. After 3H-leucine injections into the olfactory bulb transported labeling was seen over the lateral entorhinal area, except its most medial part, and over the rostral part of the medial entorhinal area. The labeling covers exclusively layer Ia. The lateral and medial entorhinal areas are also reached by fibers from the prepiriform cortex. The projection to the medial entorhinal area has not been described previously. Following injections of 3H-leucine into the PPCa transported labeling is present over the entire expanse of the entorhinal cortex and is located over layer Ib with the greatest density in its superficial part. Injections of 3H-leucine into the PPCp give rise to transported labeling over much of the entorhinal cortex. No labeling was found over the most medial parts of the medial subdivision (VMEA) of the lateral entorhinal area and the medial entorhinal area. Labeling occupies layer Ib, especially its middle part, and layers II and III. Both PPCa and PPCp appear to project most heavily to the dorsal (DLEA) and ventral (VLEA) subdivisions of the lateral entorhinal area. From the retrograde experiments it can be inferred that cells of layers II and III of the PPCa project predominantly to the DLEA, whereas those of the PPCp project predominantly to the VLEA. The MEA receives its heaviest projection from layer II of both PPCa and PPCp. In control experiments with 3H-leucine injections into the endopiriform nucleus it was found that this nucleus projects to the entire expanse of the entorhinal cortex. The fibers distribute to all layers with the exception of layer Ia.Abbreviations AI agranular insular cortex - AL lateral nucleus of the amygdala - BL basolateral nucleus of the amygdala - BM basomedial nucleus of the amygdala - C claustrum - CoA cortical nucleus of the amygdala - DLEA dorsal division of the lateral entorhinal cortex - END endopiriform nucleus - H hippocampus - I granular insular cortex - lot lateral olfactory tractus - MCL mitral cell layer of the olfactory bulb - MEA medial entorhinal area - OB olfactory bulb - PPCa anterior part of the prepiriform nucleus - PPCp posterior part of the prepiriform nucleus - VLEA ventral division of the lateral entorhinal cortex - VMEA ventromedial division of the lateral entorhinal cortex - 35 area 35 of the perirhinal cortex - 36 area 36 of the perirhinal cortex  相似文献

Summary Unilateral stereotaxic lesions were made in the anterior thalamic nuclei of the cat, and the ensuing terminal degeneration traced to the medial cortex by the methods of Nauta-Gygax and Fink-Heimer. The anterodorsal nucleus projects to the retrosplenial, postsubicular and presubicular areas. These projections appear to be organized in the dorsoventral direction. The posterior portion of the retrosplenial area receives no fibers from the anterodorsal nucleus. Fibers from this nucleus are distributed largely in layer I and in layer III and the deep portion of layer II of the posterior limbic cortex. The anteroventral nucleus sends fibers to the cingular area and parts of the retrosplenial, postsubicular and presubicular areas. These projections appear to be organized in a topical manner mediolaterally. When the lesion involves the parvocellular part of the nucleus, degeneration spreads to the lower lip, bank and fundus of the splenial sulcus. There appears to be an anteroposterior organization in the cortical projections of the anteroventral nucleus. Fibers from the anteroventral nucleus are distributed most profusely in layers IV and III and in the superficial portion of layer I of the posterior limbic cortex. The anteromedial nucleus sends fine fibers to the anterior limbic region and to the cingular, retrosplenial, postsubicular and presubicular areas. The cortical projections of the anteromedial nucleus appear to be topographically organized in the dorsoventral direction. Fibers from the anteromedial nucleus are distributed largely in cortical layers V and VI of the anterior and posterior limbic regions.Abbreviations used in Figures a anterior - AD anterodorsal nucleus - AM anteromedial nucleus - AMD dorsolateral part of anteromedial nucleus - AMV ventromedial part of anteromedial nucleus - AV anteroventral nucleus - AVM magnocellular part of anteroventral nucleus - AVP parvocellular part of anteroventral nucleus - CC corpus callosum - Cg cingular area - CM medial central nucleus - Il infralimbic area - LA anterior limbic region - LD dorsal lateral nucleus - MD dorsal medial nucleus - Of orbitofrontal region - p posterior - Pr presubicular area - Prag precentral agranular area - Ps postsubicular area - Pt paratenial nucleus - Pv anterior paraventricular nucleus - R reuniens nucleus - Rs retrosplenial area - Rt thalamic reticular nucleus - SC cruciate sulcus - SM stria medullaris - Sm submedial nucleus - SS splenial sulcus - VA ventral anterior nucleus - VL ventral lateral nucleus - VM ventral medial nucleus  相似文献

Frontal cortex projections to the amygdaloid central nucleus in the rabbit   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Evidence has recently been presented which demonstrates that the amygdaloid central nucleus projects directly upon cardiovascular/autonomic regulatory nuclei of the dorsal medulla and that in the rabbit this nucleus may influence cardiovascular activity during emotional states. The present study is one of a series of investigations designed to provide information on the innervation of the central nucleus in the rabbit and describes the topography and origin of frontal cortex projections to the nucleus based upon retrograde and anterograde axonal transport techniques. Injections of horseradish peroxidase or the fluorescent dyes, Bisbenzimide or Nuclear Yellow, into the central nucleus resulted in abundant numbers of retrogradely labeled neurons in three regions of the frontal cortex: the insular cortex on the lateral surface and areas 25 and 32 on the medial surface of the hemisphere. The majority of labeled neurons in the insular cortex were located in layer V of the dorsal and posterior agranular insular regions, although labeled neurons were observed in layer V of the granular insular cortex as well as in layers II and III of the posterior agranular insular cortex. Labeled neurons in areas 25 and 32 were located throughout all layers and the total number of these neurons was substantially less than that observed in the insular cortex. Autoradiographic experiments in which amino acids were injected into the insular cortex resulted in a dense pattern of transported label within the central nucleus that extended rostrally into the sublenticular substantia innominata and lateral component of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. Label was also observed in the cortical, lateral, basolateral and basomedial amygdaloid nuclei. In contrast to the projections from the insular cortex, amino acid injections into areas 25 and 32 resulted in only relatively light labeling within the most rostral region of the central nucleus; otherwise the nucleus was partially encapsulated and virtually devoid of label. These results suggest that the insular cortex possesses the potential to directly influence the central nucleus projection to cardiovascular/autonomic regulatory nuclei of the dorsal medulla and thus, together with the amygdaloid central nucleus, appears to be an important component of a forebrain system involved in cardiovascular/autonomic regulation.  相似文献

Retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) from the mediodorsal (MD), ventromedial (VM), ventroposterior (VP) and intralaminar (IL) nuclei of the dorsal thalamus revealed a topographical pattern of efferents from the frontal cortex. MD injections labeled the midline and insular regions of the prefrontal cortex (Pfc), including the anterior limbic, and most ventral part of the precentral agranular Pfc, as well as the agranular insular cortex. VM injections labeled only the most dorsomedial part of the granular insular cortex, whereas IL and VP injections labeled the dorsal precentral agranular Pfc and a strip of cortex that extended laterally across the superior aspect of the forceps minor. The IL injections also labeled cells that extended ventrally into the granular and agranular insular areas.  相似文献

The projections from the midline and intralaminar thalamic nuclei to the cerebral cortex were studied in the rat by means of anterograde tracing with Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin. The midline and intralaminar nuclear complex taken as a whole projects to widespread, predominantly frontal, cortical areas. Each of the constituent thalamic nuclei has a restricted cortical projection field that overlaps only slightly with the projection fields of adjacent midline and intralaminar nuclei. The projections of the intralaminar nuclei cover a larger cortical area than those of the midline nuclei. The laminar distributions of fibres from individual midline and intralaminar thalamic nuclei are different and include both deep and superficial cortical layers. The parataenial, paraventricular and intermediodorsal midline nuclei each project to circumscribed parts of the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampal and parahippocampal regions. In the prefrontal cortex, the projections are restricted to the medial orbital, infralimbic, ventral prelimbic and agranular insular fields, and the rostral part of the ventral anterior cingular cortex. In contrast to the other midline nuclei, the rhomboid nucleus projects to widespread cortical areas. The rostral intralaminar nuclei innervate dorsal parts of the prefrontal cortex, i.e. the dorsal parts of the prelimbic, anterior cingular and dorsal agranular insular cortical fields, the lateral and ventrolateral orbital areas, and the caudal part of the ventral anterior cingular cortex. Additional projections are aimed at the agranular fields of the motor cortex and the caudal part of the parietal cortex. The lateral part of the parafascicular nucleus sends fibres predominantly to the lateral agranular field of the motor cortex and the rostral part of the parietal cortex. The medial part of the parafascicular nucleus projects rather sparsely to the dorsal part of the prelimbic cortex, the anterior cingular cortex and the medial agranular field of the motor cortex. Individual midline and intralaminar thalamic nuclei are thus in a position to directly influence circumscribed areas of the cerebral cortex. In combination with previously reported data on the organization of the midline and intralaminar thalamostriatal projections and the prefrontal corticostriatal projections the present results suggest a high degree of differentiation in the convergence of thalamic and cortical afferent fibres in the striatum. Each of the recently described parallel basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits can thus be expanded to include projections at both the cortical and striatal levels from a specific part of the midline and intralaminar nuclear complex. The distinctive laminar distributions of the fibres originating from the different nuclei emphasize the specificity of the midline and intralaminar thalamocortical projections.  相似文献

The interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure (IPAC) receives inputs from several autonomic/limbic regions in the forebrain, including the agranular insular cortex, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, the amygdaloid complex, and the lateral hypothalamic area. We sought to identify the distribution of afferent sources to the IPAC and to determine whether these IPAC projection fibers issue collaterals to the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), the principal relay of primary visceral afferents. Two fluorescent tracers, FluoroGold and FluoroRed, were centered stereotaxically on the IPAC and the NTS on chloral hydrate-anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. Although the majority of IPAC and NTS afferents were spatially segregated, small but substantial numbers of dually labeled neurons (three to four cells/section) were observed in the dorsal bank of the posterior agranular insular cortex, exclusively in layer V. Collateral projection neurons were also found in the posterior part of the lateral hypothalamic area (two to six cells/section). The branching projections identified here may represent a potential link between affective or motivated behavior and viscerosensory processing.  相似文献

Afferents to the nucleus accumbens septi utilizing glutamate or aspartate have been investigated in the rat by autoradiography following injection and retrograde transport of D[3H]aspartate. Parallel experiments with the intra-accumbal injection of [3H]GABA were employed to establish the transmitter-selective nature of the retrograde labelling found with D[3H]aspartate. The topography of cortical and thalamic perikarya labelled by D[3H]aspartate was extremely precise. D[3H]Aspartate labelled perikarya were found in layer V of agranular insular cortex; bilaterally within prelimbic and infralimbic subareas perikarya, but predominantly ipsilaterally. Ipsilateral labelling was observed in dorsal, ventral and posterior agranular insular cortices, and in perirhinal cortex. Injections into ventral accumbens labelled perikarya in ipsilateral entorhinal cortex, while infusion of D[3H]aspartate into anterior caudate-putamen resulted in labelling of perikarya in ipsilateral cingulate and lateral precentral cortices. Following infusion of D[3H]aspartate, ipsilateral midline thalamic nuclei contained the highest density of labelled perikarya; infusions centred on nucleus accumbens resulted in heavy retrograde labelling of the parataenial nucleus, but labelling was sparse from a lateral site and not observed after injection into anterior caudate-putamen. Less prominent labelling of perikarya was seen in other thalamic nuclei (mediodorsal, central medial, rhomboid, reuniens and centrolateral), mostly near the midline. Perikaryal labelling was also found in the ipsilateral amygdaloid complex, particularly in basolateral and lateral nuclei. Only weak labelling resulted in ventral subiculum. Numerous labelled cells were present bilaterally in anterior olfactory nucleus, although perikarya were more prominent ipsilaterally. Labelled perikarya were not consistently observed in other regions (ventral tegmental area, medial substantia nigra, raphe nuclei and locus coeruleus) known to innervate nucleus accumbens. Presumptive anterograde labelling was detected in ventral pallidum/substantia innominata, ventral tegmental area and medial substantia nigra. [3H]GABA was generally not retrogradely transported to the same regions labelled by D[3H]aspartate; an exception being the anterior olfactory nucleus, where large numbers of labelled perikarya were found. [3H]GABA failed to label perikarya in thalamus and amygdala, and a topographic distribution of label was absent in neocortex.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Summary We have previously described a visual area situated in the cortex surrounding the deep infolding of the anterior ectosylvian sulcus of the cat (Mucke et al. 1982). Using orthograde and retrograde transport methods we now report anatomical evidence that this anterior ectosylvian visual area (AEV) is connected with a substantial number of both cortical and subcortical regions. The connections between AEV and other cortical areas are reciprocal and, at least in part, topographically organized: the rostral AEV is connected with the bottom region of the presylvian sulcus, the lower bank of the cruciate sulcus, the rostral part of the ventral bank of the splenial sulcus, the rostral portion of the lateral suprasylvian visual area (LS) and the lateral bank of the posterior rhinal sulcus; the caudal AEV is connected with the bottom region of the presylvian sulcus, the caudal part of LS, the ventral part of area 20 and the lateral bank of the posterior rhinal sulcus. Subcortically, AEV has reciprocal connections with the ventral medial thalamic nucleus (VM), with the medial part of the lateralis posterior nucleus (LPm), as well as with the lateralis medialis-suprageniculate nuclear (LM-Sg) complex. These connections are also topographically organized with more rostral parts of AEV being related to more ventral portions of the LPm and LM-Sg complex. AEV also projects to the caudate nucleus, the putamen, the lateral amygdaloid nucleus, the superior colliculus, and the pontine nuclei. It is concluded that AEV is a visual association area which functionally relates the visual with both the motor and the limbic system and that it might play a role in the animal's orienting and alerting behavior.Abbreviations Ac aqueductus cerebri - AEs anterior ectosylvian sulcus - ALLS anterolateral lateral suprasylvian area - AMLS anteromedial lateral suprasylvian area - ASs anterior suprasylvian sulcus - Cd caudate nucleus - CL central lateral nucleus - Cl claustrum - Cos coronal sulcus - Crs cruciate sulcus - DLS dorsal lateral suprasylvian area - GI stratum griseum intermediale - GP stratum griseum profundum - IC inferior colliculus - LAm lateral amygdaloid nucleus - LGNd dorsal nucleus of lateral geniculate body - LGNv ventral nucleus of lateral geniculate body - Llc nucleus lateralis intermedius, pars caudalis - LM nucleus lateralis medialis - LPl nucleus lateralis posterior, pars lateralis - LPm nucleus lateralis posterior, pars medialis - Ls lateral sulcus - MD nucleus mediodorsalis - MG medial geniculate body - MSs middle suprasylvian sulcus - Ndl nucleus dorsolateralis pontis - Nl nucleus lateralis pontis - Np nucleus peduncularis pontis - Npm nucleus paramedianus pontis - Nrt nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis - Nv nucleus ventralis pontis - Ped cerebral peduncle - PEs posterior ectosylvian sulcus - Pg periaqueductal gray - PLLS posterolateral lateral suprasylvian area - PMLS posteromedial lateral suprasylvian area - PSs presylvian sulcus - Pul pulvinar - Put putamen - R red nucleus - Sg suprageniculate nucleus - SN substantia nigra - Sps splenial sulcus - Syls sylvian sulcus - T trapezoid body - VA ventral anterior nucleus - VL ventral lateral nucleus - VLS ventral lateral suprasylvian area - VM ventral medial nucleus - VPL ventral posterolateral nucleus - VPM ventral posteromedial nucleus Sponsored by Max-Planck-Society during part of the studySponsored by Thyssen FoundationSponsored by Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation  相似文献

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has been associated with diverse functions including attentional processes, visceromotor activity, decision making, goal directed behavior, and working memory. Using retrograde tracing techniques, we examined, compared, and contrasted afferent projections to the four divisions of the mPFC in the rat: the medial (frontal) agranular (AGm), anterior cingulate (AC), prelimbic (PL), and infralimbic (IL) cortices. Each division of the mPFC receives a unique set of afferent projections. There is a shift dorsoventrally along the mPFC from predominantly sensorimotor input to the dorsal mPFC (AGm and dorsal AC) to primarily ‘limbic’ input to the ventral mPFC (PL and IL). The AGm and dorsal AC receive afferent projections from widespread areas of the cortex (and associated thalamic nuclei) representing all sensory modalities. This information is presumably integrated at, and utilized by, the dorsal mPFC in goal directed actions. In contrast with the dorsal mPFC, the ventral mPFC receives significantly less cortical input overall and afferents from limbic as opposed to sensorimotor regions of cortex. The main sources of afferent projections to PL/IL are from the orbitomedial prefrontal, agranular insular, perirhinal and entorhinal cortices, the hippocampus, the claustrum, the medial basal forebrain, the basal nuclei of amygdala, the midline thalamus and monoaminergic nuclei of the brainstem. With a few exceptions, there are few projections from the hypothalamus to the dorsal or ventral mPFC. Accordingly, subcortical limbic information mainly reaches the mPFC via the midline thalamus and basal nuclei of amygdala. As discussed herein, based on patterns of afferent (as well as efferent) projections, PL is positioned to serve a direct role in cognitive functions homologous to dorsolateral PFC of primates, whereas IL appears to represent a visceromotor center homologous to the orbitomedial PFC of primates.  相似文献

The present study investigated the central connections of motor neurons innervating the thyroarytenoid laryngeal muscle that is active in swallowing, respiration and vocalization. In both intact and sympathectomized rats, the pseudorabies virus (PRV) was inoculated into the muscle. After initial infection of laryngomotor neurons in the ipsilateral loose division of the nucleus ambiguus (NA) by 3 days post-inoculation, PRV spread to the ipsilateral compact portion of the NA, the central and intermediate divisions of the nucleus tractus solitarii, the Botzinger complex, and the parvicellular reticular formation by 4 days. Infection was subsequently expanded to include the ipsilateral granular and dysgranular parietal insular cortex, the ipsilateral medial division of the central nucleus of the amygdala, the lateral, paraventricular, ventrolateral and medial preoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus (generally bilaterally), the lateral periaqueductal gray, the A7 and oral and caudal pontine nuclei. At the latest time points sampled post-inoculation (5 days), infected neurons were identified in the ipsilateral agranular insular cortex, the caudal parietal insular cortex, the anterior cingulate cortex, and the contralateral motor cortex. In the amygdala, infection had spread to the lateral central nucleus and the parvicellular portion of the basolateral nucleus. Hypothalamic infection was largely characterized by an increase in the number of infected cells in earlier infected regions though the posterior, dorsomedial, tuberomammillary and mammillary nuclei contained infected cells. Comparison with previous connectional data suggests PRV followed three interconnected systems originating in the forebrain; a bilateral system including the ventral anterior cingulate cortex, periaqueductal gray and ventral respiratory group; an ipsilateral system involving the parietal insular cortex, central nucleus of the amygdala and parvicellular reticular formation, and a minor contralateral system originating in motor cortex. Hypothalamic innervation involved several functionally specific nuclei. Overall, the data imply complex CNS control over the multi-functional thyroarytenoid muscle.  相似文献

In the present study, we compared the distribution of thalamocortical afferents of cortical area 4 to that of cortical area 6 in the dog, using fluorescent tracers. Multiple injections of combinations of two dyes (diamidino yellow dihydrochloride, Evans blue, fast blue, granular blue) were made into either the anterior and posterior sigmoid gyri or into the medial and lateral regions of the anterior sigmoid gyrus in the anesthetized dog. We found that the thalamic afferents of areas 4 and 6 arise from topographically organized bands of cells that traverse several thalamic nuclei and extend throughout the rostrocaudal extent of the thalamus. The most medial band included area 6-projecting neurons in the anterior nuclei, the rhomboid nucleus, the ventral anterior nucleus (VA), ventromedial nucleus (VM) and mediodorsal nucleus (MD). Within this band, cells projecting to medial area 6a tended to be more numerous in the anterior nuclei, anterior parts of VA and VM and anterior and caudal parts of MD. Fewer cells in MD but more cells in caudal parts of VA and VM projected to lateral area 6 a. Lateral bands of cells in central through lateral parts of VA and VL projected topographically to lateral area 4 on the anterior sigmoid gyrus and lateral through medial parts of postcruciate area 4. The most lateral band of cells in VL continued ventrally into the zona incerta. Area 4 also received input from VM and the central lateral (CL) and centrum medianum (CM) nuclei. Within regions of VA, VL and VM, cells from one band interspersed with cells from another, but there were very few double-labeled cells projecting to two cortical sites. When the present results are compared with our previous findings on the distribution of subcortical afferents to the motor thalamus, it appears that separate motor cortical areas may receive predominantly separate but also partially over-lapping pathways in the dog.Abbreviations AV Anterior ventral nucleus - AM anterior medial nucleus - Cb cerebellar nuclei - CeM central medial nucleus - CL central lateral nucleus - CM centrum medianum nucleus - EN entopeduncular nucleus - Hb habenula - LD lateral dorsal nucleus - MD mediodorsal nucleus - mt mammillothalamic tract - MV medioventral nucleus - Pf parafascicular nucleus - R reticular thalamic nucleus - rf retroflex fasciculus - Rh rhomboid nucleus - SN substantia nigra - VA ventral anterior nucleus - VL ventral lateral nucleus, principal division - VLd ventral lateral nucleus, dorsal division - VM ventral medial nucleus - VPL ventral posterior lateral nucleus - ZI zona incerta  相似文献

The interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure is, like the striatum, very rich in tyrosine hydroxylase and acetylcholinesterase, but on the basis of most other neurochemical criteria displays features that are typical of the extended amygdala (Alheid, de Olmos and Beltramino, 1995). Its afferent connections were examined in the rat with retrograde (cholera toxin B subunit) and anterograde (Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin) tracers and compared to those of the neighboring amygdalostriatal transition area and central amygdaloid nucleus. Deposits of cholera toxin B subunit in the interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure result in retrograde labeling that is similar to that seen after cholera toxin B subunit injections in the central amygdaloid nucleus. Retrogradely labeled cells are found in insular, infralimbic, prelimbic, piriform, amygdalopiriform transition, entorhinal and perirhinal cortices, as well as in temporal field CA1 of Ammon horn and ventral subiculum, amygdala (nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract, anterior amygdaloid area, anterior cortical, posterolateral cortical, anterior and posterior basomedial, intercalated cells, basolateral and lateral nuclei), and extended amygdala, primarily in its central division. The latter includes the lateral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, dorsal portions of the sublenticular region, the lateral pocket of the supracapsular bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and the central amygdaloid nucleus. Retrogradely labeled cells are also seen in midline thalamic nuclei, lateral hypothalamus, ventral tegmental area, retrorubral field, dorsal raphe nucleus, pedunculopontine and dorsolateral tegmental nuclei, locus coeruleus and parabrachial area. The central extended amygdala, lateral hypothalamus and parabrachial area display a substantial retrograde labeling only when the injection involves districts of the interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure apposed to the pallidum, i.e. its medial part. Our anterograde results confirm that projections from the lateral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and central amygdaloid nucleus to the interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure target its medial part. They also indicate that structures which provide major afferents to the central extended amygdala (the lateral and posterior basolateral amygdaloid nuclei and the amygdalopiriform transition area) innervate chiefly the medial part of the interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure and, to a much lesser degree, its lateral part. The piriform cortex, which has well-acknowledged projections to the ventral striatum, innervates only the rostral sector of the interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure. Taken together, these data indicate that the medial part of the interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure is closely related to the central extended amygdala. Rostral and lateral parts of the interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure, on the other hand, appear as transitional territories between the central extended amygdala and ventral striatum. The afferent connections of the zone traditionally termed amygdalostriatal transition area are in general similar to those of the caudate-putamen, which does not receive projections from the central extended amygdala. After cholera toxin B subunit injections in the caudoventral globus pallidus, a dense retrograde labeling is observed in the amygdalostriatal transition area and overlying striatum, but not in the interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure. Our results suggest that the interstitial nucleus of the posterior limb of the anterior commissure and the amygdalostriatal transition area are engaged in distinct forebrain circuits; the former is a dopamine-rich territory intimately related to the central ext  相似文献

Summary The interconnections of the auditory cortex with the parahippocampal and cingulate cortices were studied in the cat. Injections of the anterograde and retrograde tracer WGA-HRP were performed, in different cats (n = 9), in electrophysiologically identified auditory cortical fields. Injections in the posterior zone of the auditory cortex (PAF or at the PAF/AI border) labeled neurons and axonal terminal fields in the cingulate gyrus, mainly in the ventral bank of the splenial sulcus (a region that can be considered as an extension of the cytoarchitectonic area Cg), and posteriorly in the retrosplenial area. Labeling was also present in area 35 of the perirhinal cortex, but it was sparser than in the cingulate gyrus. Following WGA-HRP injection in All, no labeling was found in the cingulate gyrus, but a few neurons and terminals were labeled in area 35. In contrast, no or very sparse labeling was observed in the cingulate and perirhinal cortices after WGA-HRP injections in the anterior zone of the auditory cortex (AI or AAF). A WGA-HRP injection in the cingulate gyrus labeled neurons in the posterior zone of the auditory cortex, between the posterior ectosylvian and the posterior suprasylvian sulci, but none was found more anteriorly in regions corresponding to AI, AAF and AII. The present data indicate the existence of preferential interconnections between the posterior auditory cortex and the limbic system (cingulate and parahippocampal cortices). This specialization of posterior auditory cortical areas can be related to previous observations indicating that the anterior and posterior regions of the auditory cortex differ from each other by their response properties to sounds and their pattern of connectivity with the auditory thalamus and the claustrum.Abbreviations AAF anterior auditory cortical field - aes anterior ectosylvian sulcus - AI primary auditory cortical field - AII secondary auditory cortical field - ALLS anterior-lateral lateral suprasylvian visual area - BF best frequency - C cerebral cortex - CC corpus callosum - CIN cingulate cortex - CL claustrum - DLS dorsal lateral suprasylvian visual area - DP dorsoposterior auditory area - E entorhinal cortex - IC inferior colliculus - LGN lateral geniculate nucleus - LV pars lateralis of the ventral division of the MGB - LVe lateral ventricule - MGB medial geniculate body - OT optic tract - OV pars ovoidea of the ventral division of the MGB - PAF posterior auditory cortical field - pes posterior ectosylvian sulcus - PLLS posterior-lateral lateral suprasylvian visual area - PS posterior suprasylvian visual area - PU putamen - RE reticular complex of thalamus - rs rhinal sulcus - SC superior colliculus - SS suprasylvian sulcus - T temporal auditory cortical field - TMB tetramethylbenzidine - VBX ventrobasal complex of thalamus, external nucleus - VL pars ventrolateralis of the ventral division of the MGB - VLS ventrolateral suprasylvian visual area - VPAF ventroposterior auditory cortical field - WGA-HRP wheat germ agglutinin labeled with horseradish peroxidase - wm white matter  相似文献

The organization of connections between the amygdala, prefrontal cortex and striatum was studied using anterograde and retrograde tract tracing techniques in the rat. The anterograde transport of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin and wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase was used to examine the striatal projections of the prefrontal cortex. These studies revealed that the prelimbic area of the medial prefrontal cortex projects mainly to the medial part of the striatum, whereas the dorsal agranular insular area of the lateral prefrontal cortex projects mainly to the ventrolateral part of the striatum. The organization of amygdaloid projections to the prefrontal cortex and its associated portions of the striatum was investigated using the fluorescence retrograde tract tracing technique. Different color fluorescent dyes, True Blue and Diamidino Yellow, were injected into the prefrontal cortex and striatum. These studies demonstrated that medial portions of the basolateral nucleus, and adjacent portions of the lateral, basomedial and amygdalo-hippocampal nuclei, project to both the medial prefrontal cortex and its associated medial striatal region. The rostral pole and lateral portions of the basolateral nucleus project to both the lateral prefrontal cortex and its associated lateral striatal region. Many neurons in the basolateral amygdaloid nucleus, and to a lesser extent other amygdaloid nuclei, were double-labeled in these experiments, indicating that these cells send collaterals to both the prefrontal cortex and striatum. These findings indicate that discrete areas of the amygdala, and in some cases individual amygdaloid neurons, can modulate information processing in the first two links of distinct cortico-striato-pallidal systems arising in the medial and lateral prefrontal cortex.  相似文献
