The likelihood of partner physical aggression on days of male partners' alcohol consumption, during a 5-month period, was examined for men entering a domestic violence treatment program (n = 137) and domestically violent men entering an alcoholism treatment program (n = 135). For men entering the domestic violence treatment program (alcoholism treatment program odds in parentheses), the odds of any male-to-female physical aggression were more than 8 times (11 times) higher on days when men drank than on days of no alcohol consumption. The odds of severe male-to-female physical aggression were more than 11 times (11 times) higher on days of men's drinking than on days of no drinking. These findings support the proximal effect model of alcohol use and partner violence.  相似文献

Study ObjectivesStudies have demonstrated a daily, bidirectional relationship between sleep and physical activity. However, little is known about how other health behaviors, such as alcohol consumption affect this relationship. This study examined how daily and average alcohol consumption affects the relationships between sleep and physical activity.MethodsParticipants included 70 men and women, ages 18–50 with sleep duration >6.5 hours. Participants wore an actigraph, physical activity monitor and recorded number of alcoholic drinks by daily food logs for 7 days. Results were analyzed using multi-level models to evaluate the 7-day average (i.e. between-person effects) and daily effects (i.e. within-person effects) simultaneously.ResultsThose with more average (7 day) minutes of vigorous physical activity had less wake after sleep onset (WASO). Furthermore, a higher number of alcoholic drinks was associated with longer sleep duration and higher WASO over 7 days. Days with a higher number of alcoholic drinks were associated with higher WASO and sleep fragmentation that night. Alcohol intake moderated the average (7 days) and daily relationships between sleep and physical activity such that high average (7 days) WASO was associated with shorter average total physical activity duration, but only for those with higher alcohol intake. In addition, longer physical activity duration during the day was associated with lower sleep fragmentation that night, but only for those with lower alcohol intake.ConclusionsThese data demonstrate that in a naturalistic setting, alcohol intake negatively impacts sleep and diminishes the benefits of physical activity on sleep.  相似文献

The effects of moderate intake of ethanol and ageing were investigated on the levels of the growth-associated protein GAP-43, whose expression has been used as an indicator of axonal growth during development, regeneration and remodelling of synaptic connections. Groups of female Wistar rats (12 and 24 months of age), were alcohol-fed for one month while age-matched control groups received an isocaloric diet. A quantitative evaluation of GAP-43 was performed in hippocampus and in hippocampal selected areas in view of the vulnerability of this complex to alcohol aggression by means of two different methods, namely Western blot analysis and immunohistochemistry. While the former measures total extractable GAP-43, the latter allows visualisation of in situ changes in topographical distribution of GAP-43. Western blot analysis revealed an age-dependent reduction (-47%) and an ethanol-associated increase (81%) of GAP-43 demonstrated only in the old group. Conversely, quantitative immunohistochemistry of GAP-43 in the entire hippocampus showed a non-significant ethanol-related decrement in 24-month-old rats (-30%), although the age-dependent reduction was confirmed. Ageing was associated with a decrement of GAP-43 immunostaining in CA3 stratum radiatum (CA3) and in inner molecular layer of dentate gyrus (IML). Treatment determined a decrease of GAP-43 immunostaining in adult rat CA3 and IML and no change in CA1 stratum radiatum (CA1). Our results suggest that immunohistochemistry evaluation underestimates GAP-43 levels in ethanol-treated animals possibly as a consequence of conformational changes induced by alcohol, resulting in non-targeting of the specific antibody. Western blot analysis demonstrate that although there is a reduction of GAP-43 levels in hippocampus of aged rats, this structure retain a remarkable potential to compensate for ethanol toxicity during ageing.  相似文献

Past work showed that chronic alcohol consumption induces massive degeneration in the rat cerebellar cortex. To study the subsequent process of nervous tissue repair, followed itself by a remodelling activity, groups of alcohol-treated rats for 3 and 6 months were used and the results compared with the respective age-matched controls. From the wide variety of cells which display phagocytic activity in the mammalian brain it was found, based on qualitative observations, that two types were clearly involved in the removal of the alcohol-induced degenerated debris: the resident microglial cells and the non-resident brain macrophages. This assumption was corroborated by the study of their origin, using carbon particles and latex beeds intravenously injected, which showed that brain macrophages were the sole population to be labelled. These observations fit with the multiple origin concept for neural phagocytosis which postulates that different cell types can be recruited for the removal of the damaged neural tissue depending on the severity of the lesions and on the extension of the blood vessels damage.  相似文献

Previous studies, based on amplitude and latency measurements of auditory event-related brain potentials, yielded inconclusive results about the status of mismatch negativity (MMN) in chronic alcoholics. The present study explores scalp current density (SCD) dynamics during MMN latency range in alcoholics, and correlates electrical SCD results with clinical data of the patients. SCD was computed from 30 electrodes in 16 abstinent chronic alcoholics and 16 healthy control volunteers in a paradigm on MMN elicited by duration changes. Reduced activity was observed in left frontal and right anterior and posterior temporal areas during MMN in alcoholics. Alcohol consumption correlated negatively with SCD intensity in these regions. Delayed activation was observed in the left posterior temporal area in the patients. Alcohol abstinence duration correlated positively with SCD intensity in this region. These results point to an impairment of automatic brain processing mechanisms associated with auditory change detection in chronic alcoholism. The present results suggest a reorganization of the computational neurodynamics of automatic auditory change detection linked to the amount of alcohol consumed in abstinent chronic alcoholics.  相似文献

Multivesicular bodies (MVBs) with diameters up to 4.5 microns were observed in the hippocampal pyramidal cells of rats submitted to chronic alcohol consumption. A significant increase in the volumetric density (Vv) of these organelles was found in CA1 pyramidal cells. Transitional forms of MVBs towards lysosomes were seen. A failure in MVB's enzymatic hydrolytic mechanisms, due to the prolonged alcohol aggression, could underlie its formation.  相似文献

Summary We have previously shown that prolonged alcohol ingestion leads to neuronal loss in the supraoptic nucleus of the rat and that the surviving neurons, mainly the vasopressinergic ones, display marked increase in volume. In an attempt to establish correlates for the volumetric alterations we have studied the organelles of supraoptic nucleus neurons in three groups of rats-ethanol-fed, pair-fed, and dehydrated, in all cases treated from 2 to 12 months of age. The volume and surface area of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus, and the volume of nucleoli and neurosecretory granules were estimated on the basis of the respective volume and surface densities. The volumes and surface areas of all quantified organelles were increased in both alcohol-fed and dehydrated animals, although the increases were greater in the former group. Changes in the organelles studied are commonly regarded as reliable indicators of the neurosecretory activity of magnocellular neurons. Thus, our results suggest that under conditions of chronic alcohol exposure, the synthesizing activity of the surviving supra-optic neurons is augmented to compensate for the alcohol-induced neuronal loss and/or as a consequence of the alcohol-induced hyperosmolality. Changes in the transport and release of the neurosecretory material cannot, however, be ruled out as an additional cause of neuronal enlargement.  相似文献

Hyaluronan, or hyaluronic acid (HA), is an essential component of extracellular matrices. HA of appropriate molecular weight and concentration can induce osteoblast differentiation and bone formation in vitro. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of HA of different molecular weights on ovariectomy (OVX)-induced bone loss in rats. Adult female Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to bilateral OVX or sham surgical procedure (sham). OVX rats were treated with: HA of molecular weight of 0.75 MDa at a dose of 1 mg/kg/day and with HA of molecular weight of 1.62 MDa at a dose of both 0.5 mg/kg/day and 1 mg/kg/day. HA was applied orally once a day during the 8-week period after ovariectomy. Body weight, urinary pyridinoline (Pyr), deoxypyridinoline (DPyr) corrected for urinary creatinine, serum nitrite/nitrate concentrations and whole body and femoral bone mineral density (BMD) were measured. HA treatment had no effect on the body weight gain in OVX rats. Excretion of urinary Pyr and Dpyr significantly increased in OVX rats compared to sham controls. The higher molecular weight HA (1.62 MDa) significantly reduced urinary Pyr and DPyr concentrations measured on day 28 after ovariectomy (p < 0.001). Serum concentrations of nitric oxide metabolites, nitrite/nitrate significantly decreased in OVX rats in comparison with sham controls (p < 0.001). HA of both 0.75 MDa and 1.62 MDa molecular weights significantly enhanced serum nitrite/nitrate concentrations in OVX rats. There was a clear reduction of whole body and femoral BMD in untreated OVX rats. The higher molecular weight HA decreased both whole body and femoral BMD loss. Our results show that orally applied HA of high molecular weight (1.62 MDa) inhibits bone resorption and provides a protective effect on bone density in ovariectomized rats.  相似文献

The present study sought to examine acute effects of alcohol on cognitive processing and performance within the context of two prominent theories of alcohol's effects; namely, that alcohol restricts the focus of attention (e.g. Steele and Josephs, 1990. Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 97, 196-205) and that alcohol impairs response inhibition (e.g. Fillmore and Vogel-Sprott, 1999. Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology, 7, 49-55; Fillmore and Vogel-Sprott, 2000. Journal of Studies on Alcohol, 61, 239-246). Forty-five participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo level of alcohol (0.04 g/kg), a moderate dose (0.40 g/kg), or a higher dose (0.80 g/kg). Brain electrical activity (ERPs) and behavioral responses (reaction time and accuracy) were measured while participants performed a modified flanker task, in which a target letter was flanked by response-compatible or response-incompatible letters. Analyses of behavioral data showed that alcohol increased response competition in accuracy but not response times, suggesting that alcohol influences response selection more than attentional processes per se. This finding is in-line with predictions derived from the response inhibition model. ERP latency data provided mixed support for both models. ERP amplitude data showed that the high dose of alcohol primarily influenced a mostly frontal negativity in the ERP, present on both correct and incorrect response trials. Differences in self-reported susceptibility to alcohol were most evident in the amplitude of the P3 component. Findings are discussed in terms of the differential effects of acute dose and susceptibility on information processing.  相似文献

The relation between alcohol consumption and the subsequent occurrence of the five most frequent cancers in Japanese men in Hawaii (cancer of the stomach, colon, rectum, lung, and prostate) was analyzed in a prospective study of 8006 subjects. Information on alcohol consumption was obtained through interviews in the mid-1960s, and the cohort has been followed since then. The analysis, which was adjusted for the effects of age and cigarette smoking, revealed a positive association between consumption of alcohol and rectal cancer, accounted for primarily by an increased risk in men whose usual monthly consumption of beer was 500 oz (15 liters) or more (relative risk, 3.05; P less than 0.01, as compared with those who did not drink beer). A significant positive relation between alcohol consumption and lung-cancer incidence was also found, accounted for primarily by an increased risk among subjects who consumed larger amounts of wine or whiskey, as compared with the risks among nonconsumers of these beverages (relative risk, 2.19, [P = 0.03] and 2.62 [P less than 0.01], respectively). No significant relation between alcohol consumption and the incidence of the other three cancers was found.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Physical activity has demonstrated efficacy in depression and anxiety, but its potential in the management of bipolar disorder is yet unexplored. This study is a pilot investigation into the effectiveness of an adjunctive walking program in the acute treatment of bipolar disorder. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of all patients admitted over a 24-month period to a private psychiatric unit with a primary diagnosis of bipolar disorder (ICD-10). All patients were invited to participate voluntarily in a walking group during their admissions. Those who reliably attended the walking group (participants) were compared against those who did not attend (non-participants), using the clinician-rated Clinical Global Impression Severity (CGI-S) and Improvement (CGI-I) scales and the self-reported 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) as primary outcome measures. RESULTS: There were 24 admissions for participants and 74 admissions for non-participants. The two groups did not differ significantly in patient demographics or admission CGI and DASS measures, except for a lower DASS Stress subscore for participants (p=0.049). At discharge, the inter-group differences in CGI measures remained non-significant, but participants had significantly lower scores than non-participants for DASS (p=0.005) and all its subscales (Depression p=0.048, Anxiety p=0.002, Stress p=0.01). LIMITATIONS: Methodological limitations include a retrospective design, small sample size, lack of randomisation or control, and indirect measure of manic symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this trial provide preliminary support for a therapeutic role of physical activity in bipolar disorder, and warrant further investigation with randomised controlled trials.  相似文献

This study aimed to replicate findings that alcohol consumption and positive implicit beer-related cognitions can be reduced using inhibitory control (IC) training, with the addition of an active training control. Frontal EEG asymmetry, an objective psychophysiological index of approach motivation, was used as a dependent measure to examine training outcomes. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two IC training conditions (Beer NoGo or Beer Go) or a Brief Alcohol Intervention (BAI) (i.e. the active training control). The IC training tasks consistently paired a stimulus that required a response with images of water (Beer NoGo) or images of beer (Beer Go). Alcohol consumption and implicit beer-related cognitions were measured at pre-training, post-training and at one week follow-up. Frontal EEG asymmetry was recorded during a passive image viewing task that presented neutral, healthy, and beer stimuli — at pre-training, post-training and follow-up. Participants in the Beer NoGo and BAI conditions consumed less beer in a taste test immediately after training than Beer Go participants, suggesting that IC training may be as effective as the already established BAI. The taste test findings were in line with the frontal EEG asymmetry data, which indicated that approach motivation for beer stimuli was altered in the expected directions. However, the positive correlation between post-training frontal EEG asymmetry data and taste test consumption was not significant. While there were no significant changes in implicit beer-related cognitions following training, a trending positive relationship between implicit beer-related cognitions at post-training and taste test consumption was reported. Further exploration addressing the limitations of the current study is required in order to clarify the implications of these findings.  相似文献

In order to expand previous studies on endocrine control of activity the synthetic glucocorticoid, dexamethasone, was introduced into the water supply of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. The drug produced marked reductions in daily activity patterns which were accompanied by a redistribution of circadian patterns. These changes were reversible, in part, upon discontinuation. Controls for weight loss indicated this was probably not a contributing factor. The present results point to an influence of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis upon long-term general activity patterns.  相似文献

Four decades ago 204 men were selected as adolescents for an interdisciplinary study of health; since then they have been followed biennially. Of the 185 men who remained in the study and in good health until 1964 (age, 42 +/- 1 years), 100 men remained in excellent physical health over the next 11 years, 54 acquired minor problems, and 31 acquired serious chronic illness or died. Of 59 men with the best mental health, assessed from the age of 21 to 46 years, only two became chronically ill or died by the age of 53. Of the 48 men with the worst mental health from the age of 21 to 46, 18 became chronically ill or died. The relation between previous mental health and subsequent physical health remained statistically significant when the effects on health of alcohol, tobacco use, obesity, and longevity of ancestors were excluded by multiple regression analysis. The data suggest that good mental health retards midlife deterioration in physical health.  相似文献
