Existence of a nonarithmetic lattice in SU(2,1)

The proof of the well-known conjecture that lattices in groups of R-rank greater than 1 are arithmetic has raised speculation about the existence of nonarithmetic lattices in the R-rank 1 group SU(n,1), n > 1. This paper presents an example of such a lattice Γ₁. Γ₁ consists of the intersection with SU(2,1) of a group Γ generated by three complex reflections of order 5. The quotient SU(2,1)/Γ₁ is compact.     

On the Existence of a Mono-Vinyl d-Urobilin

Chromic acid degradation of a d-urobilin, obtained after incubation of bilirubin in fecal bacterial cultures, gave methylvinylmaleimide and methylethylmaleimide. The d-urobilin, molecular weight 588, C₃₃H₄₀-N₄O₆, clearly showed the presence of both vinyl and ethyl resonances in the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum. These results point unambiguously to a urobilin structure with one vinyl and one ethyl beta-substituent.

Extrasystoles in groups

Instances of alternation of cycle length during an A-V nodal tachycardia and during a paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia in man are descrbed. In the latter case a similar phenomenon was observed during the change from the tachycardia to sinus rhythm following an intravenous injection of quinine.Application of barium chloride or strophanthin to small areas of the cardiac surface of the dog also causes groups of extrasystoles separated by longer pauses. These arrhythmias were often elicited during vagus and following sympathetic stimulation in these experiments. Finally, the phenomenon was observed during warming of the site of origin of extrasystoles produced by subepicardial injection of strophanthin.Similar observations in the literature are discussed. The different mechanisms which may lead to this disturbance of rhythm are reviewed. Irregular stimulus formation in a center is probable; regular stimulus formation with a disturbance of conduction from the center to the rest of the heart is possible only in some of these tracings.     

Existence of islet regenerating factors within the pancreas

Reduction in the functional mass of beta-cells is a common denominator in most forms of diabetes. Since the replicative potential of beta-cells is limited, the search for factors that trigger islet neogenesis becomes imperative. Here we tested the hypothesis that regenerating factors for the pancreas are either secreted by or present within the pancreatic milieu itself. For this purpose, we intraperitoneally injected pancreatic cell culture supernatant (PCCS), from normal pancreas, into streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice for 15 consecutive days. The PCCS-treated mice showed sustained reversal in 77.77% of experimental diabetic mice as evidenced by restoration of normoglycemia, increase in serum insulin levels and occurrence of neo islets in histopathological studies during a two month follow up, as opposed to the control diabetic mice which remained hyperglycemic throughout. In order to examine the potential of PCCS to bring about the regeneration of islets, we treated intra-islet precursor cells with PCCS in vitro, which led to the neogenesis of islets as evidenced by dithiozone and insulin immunostaining. These findings substantiate our hypothesis and make the search for regenerative factors converge towards the pancreas and its immediate surroundings. Such regenerative approaches, in combination with other therapeutic strategies to promote islet neogenesis may, in future, provide a cure and/or better means for the control and management of diabetes.     

Existence of Sporothrix schenckii as a pulmonary saprophyte

A 48-year-old male custodian and part-time gardener was hospitalized for treatment of renal tuberculosis. Sputum cultures failed to reveal mycobacteria, but Sporothrix schenckii was isolated over an eight-month period. In the absence of clinical or roentgenographic evidence of active lung disease, we postulate the saprophytic existence of S schenckii in this patient's tracheobronchial tree. Recognition of this state would obviate the need for the commonly accepted therapy for pulmonary sporotrichosis, amphotericin B.
